2. This login takes you to the “root” level of your Webspace where you can create new folders/directories to organize your content.

3. Determine if you already have a directory named, “www” (all lower case, no spaces) in your Webspace. UT-Austin should have automatically created this directory for you, but if not, it’s okay. Step 4. shows you how to create one. If you already have a “www” directory, skip to Step 5. In this example, there is no “www” directory below.

4. If you don’t have a “www” directory (as shown) then create one by clicking on the “New Folder” icon at the top of the page:

• Use this screen to create a new folder named, “www”. UT’s default settings permit you to create, modify and delete information in this publicly accessible folder, but allows visitors to “View Only.”

• Enter “www” (lower case, no spaces, no quotation marks) in the “Folder Name” input box. Click the “Finish” button in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

• Your new “www” directory is now accessible through your webspace root directory. The remaining steps describe how to create a simple web page using files provided to you to get you started quickly.

5. Now you need to create an “images” directory within your “www” directory. To do this, open the “www” directory by clicking on the folder icon.

6. You are now inside the empty “www” directory. Create a new folder named, “images” by clicking the “New Folder” icon at the right of the page. Follow the same process you used to create the “www” folder.

• Enter “images” (all lower case, no quotation marks) in the “Folder Name:” input box, then click the “Finish” button.

• This creates a new, empty “images” folder within your “www” directory.

8. At this point, your “www” directory contains an empty “images” directory and nothing else. In the next few steps you will upload an “index.html” file into your “www” directory. Then you will upload three image files into your new “www/images” directory.

• Click on the “Upload” icon to begin the process of uploading the “index.html” file e-mailed to you.

• Drag and drop the “index.html” file stored on your computer into the input box if your computer allows it. Or, click on the “Add Files” button to add the “index.html” file to your “www” directory.

• Click on the “Browse…” button and navigate to where the “index.html” file is stored on your computer. Make a mental note you are uploading this file into the “www” directory.

• Browse on your computer until the “index.html” file appears in the “File Upload” popup window. Select the file and then click on the “Open” button.

• This uploads the “index.html” file into your “www” directory.

• Now open the “images” directory by double clicking its icon.

• You are now inside your empty “images” directory. Click on the “Upload” icon at the top of the page to upload the three image files: “UTTower100.jpg”, “tower100.jpg”, and “tower300.jpg” e-mailed to you earlier.

• Click the “Add File” button three times to add the three image files.

• Use the “Browse…” button to navigate to where the three image files were stored on your computer.

• Add each file to the Upload list.

• After all three image files appear in a “Browse...” field, click on the “Start Upload” button.

• This uploads “tower100.jpg”, “tower300.jpg”, and “UTTower100.jpg” files into your “www/images” directory.

• Click the “Up” button at the top of the page to navigate to your “www” directory.

9. At this point, the “index.html” file is in the “www” directory, and “tower100.jpg”, “tower300.jpg”, and “UTTower100.jpg” are in your “www/images” directory. You are now ready to view the resulting web page.

10. Open a new browser window or tab. View your Webspace page using the following URL, substituting your UT-EID for “ghk8”: https://webspace.utexas.edu/~ghk8/ Note that the “~” is required.If you get an error, first try all upper case or all lower case letters in your UT-EID.

11. Your Webspace page will display the following page containing a headline, text, ordered list, image, clickable image, an image stored on a remote server, a simple table, paragraph text and hyper-linked text.

12. Use your browser’s “View/Page Source” to view the HTML source code for the page.

Open the “index.html” file in Notepad or TextEdit and modify the text.

“Save As...” a plain text file with no formatting.

Upload this new file into your webspace, over-writing the existing “index.html” file.

View the resulting page with your new content.

13. Start publishing your original content by modifying the existing text and images provided to you.
