Educating students does not only focus on imparting concepts and principles but also deals with developing ones’ skills, talents and creativity. Article XIV, Section 19 of the Philippine Constitution says that the state shall promote physical education and encourage sports program, league competitions, and amateur sports, including training for international competitions, foster discipline team work and excellence for the development of healthy citizenry. Further, paragraph two states that all educational institutions shall undertake regular sports activities throughout the country in cooperation with athletic clubs and sectors.

ACCESS Fest, an annual celebration gives students the chance to highlight their abilities in different sports and socio-cultural competitions. From August 16-18, students of ACCESS Campus vie to compete in various activities to be declared as champion. “This year’s celebration is the highlight of our journey here in the University,” stated by Gov. Carlo C. Estraza in his welcome remarks. This is a fest that would help the students boost their confidence. Students of this campus await this occasion because of its festive and enjoyable atmosphere that helped them get away for a while from the pressure of academic matters. From the Previous years we can hear students saying “Yes! ACCESS Fest na excited na ‘ko!” when this activity is forthcoming.

Now, the celebration of this momentous event seems to be like a painting that is slowly fading and becoming dull. Further, it seems that this phenomenon keeps on repeating itself and making it worse every year. The festival we all know before is no longer the festival we see today. The first day was a concrete evidence of everything. The parade went like a rally of students, technical failures of the music that seems to play the classic game “stop dance”, minion like voices of emcees due to the poor sound produced by the sound system. Talking about familiar scenarios, let us also recognize the repeaters of this year. From the athletes, socio-cultural participants and also the candidates for Mr. and Ms. ACCESS, it is like scanning your old photo albums at home. Same faces, same event. What about the other students? Do they not deserve to have the chance to experience all these? We believe that there are still a lot of students out there who have talents and skills who can be the new pride of our campus. They remain silent because of the culture we have - patronizing the old and disregarding the new ones. A culture that weakens the pace of the entire student development. With all of these, we are just collecting second-hand robots ready to fight but not ready to win. A gum only tastes good in the first few chews and loses it sweetness when chewed several times. Thus, students get tired and listless with the same old gum and choose to spit it out. The challenge to us now is to deviate from the practices that are repeatedly done. It is time to take the step in finding new ways to motivate our students to attend our activity not for the sake of attendance but because they are eager to witness, enjoy and cherish every moment of this worthwhile and significant event. Let us give equal opportunity to every student who wishes to participate in the competitions that interest them instead of settling with usual faces we used to see.

Let us not be a fan of Douglas McArthurs’ famous line, “I shall return.”

Venture

“Success is only possible to those who do not give up.” They say, the experience lies more in the journey of reaching the destination not just the destination itself. That every step you take, every path you go through comes an obstacle which with the presence of determination and hard work you can eventually sub-due and surpass. Meet Janica Marie Ciudad our presently crowned Beauty Queen as Ms. ACCESS of Sultan Kuradat State University. The journey of becoming one is definitely not just an easy track. Along her way she encountered criticism, that “she’s not that good enough”, “her body weighs so much for a beauty queen”, “she’s a repeater”, and “a trying hard”. She said, it almost made her so down and frustrated but that never gave her the cowardice to give up and stop the fight. She said to herself not to mind all those negativity and to focus to that one goal and to convert those unfriendly unsolicited judgments as her motivations. Her basic motivation is to explore the other side of herself. She wants to be a better version of her for every tomorrow. The thing where all of us are scared to travel and unravel because we often stick to that person who we are yesterday, that made us the person we are today with the skills we have, the knowledge we have and the experiences we have; that will eventually become our foundation in honing us for tomorrow. We are afraid to take that step for we don’t know what’s ahead. As for Janica, it was a wild ride during those days of practice, even though she’s so tired with the restless practices for wanting her goal so hard the need to finish her academic requirements is still her priority. On her perspective, when life opens a door for an opportunity she’ll grab it and would try her very best and would do everything she has to do

to reach that goal. Whenever she fails, she thoroughly thinks of what she had done wrong to make it right. If the hardships she has led her to success, she’ll be so happy and proud

that these reciprocated success. The process of each success lies in your mind-set if you would grab and take a

hold of the opportunity or just let pass right in front of you. When the path you chose led to a dead-end, some would think it’s the end but some would calmly see it as a

way to discover their wings – to fly. Keep in mind that things are always a mat-ter of perspective. Always remember the 3-C’s of life, Choices, Chances

and Changes. You must always make a Choice to take a Chance or your life will never Change. “Success is not something that we dream

about it is an act that we are working for.”, said Janica – Being the Miss ACCESS of 2017, she doesn’t want to be remembered for the rea-

son that she has the crown but because of the influence she affects to others. Truly, “Knowledge, wisdom, and expertise are not enough to win your goal, what magic dominates everything, is the power of prayers. You must always take God with you in every battle. ” Indeed, success doesn’t only take an overnight sacrifices. It may take a long time. However, success is always the sweetest when the journey is the hardest.

Snap!

The twig snapped beneath

my shoes making my fellow campers

jerked their heads in my direction. I

flashed them a timid smile and sat

on the mossy-coated log next to my

best friend, Damian. He rested his

arm around my shoulder as we both

observe the scenery in front of us

unfold.

The nippy breeze of July

seeps through the fiber of our coats

and the droplets percolating down

the trees didn’t help with the cold-

ness we were feeling. But nobody

mind it though. Everyone was hav-

ing fun. A merry song flung over the

air as deep chuckles reverberate

around us. Our class planned to

have a three days environmental

camp in the western part of the town

in requirements of our Biological

Science subject. Tonight is the last

night, hence everyone is living the

moment. But all of the sudden, when

we thought everything was alright, a

loud 'Bang!' break the momentum of

everybody. A gunshot was heard not

far from our bonfire.

Our eyes wide and reflect

panicked of what was that sound all

about. Moment after, a shrilling

voice trilled around the forest. Jane,

the nerd, was screaming and panting

for breath when she reached our

direction. Her face pale and her eyes

are pooling with tears.

“I saw— I saw—” she

floundered. She opened her mouth

again but couldn’t bring herself to

utter the next words. I stepped for-

ward and embraced her in a hug.

“He’s gone.” Jane sobbed at the

crooked of my neck. “He’s gone.”

“Gone who?” I asked.

Dimensions 12 ENTERTAINMENT

In the

Midst of

Silence

“Fam, you have to see this.”

Damian interjected behind my back.

With chargeable flashlight on hand, he

hurriedly tugged me few meters away

from our bonfire. What came next

made my stomach lurched. I clasped

my hand unto my mouth from the hor-

rendous sight set before me. Surround-

ed by terrified students was a dead

Liam, our class president/ my long

time crush, hanging reversely on a tree.

I gasped when the lights hit his body. A

bullet shot on his forehead; his eyes

blank and wide and his mouth fall

agape.

I drowned out the buzzing

noise around me and focused my atten-

tion on the cold body dangling on the

thick branch of Acacia tree. All the col-

or drained on my face as I felt the wind

picked up its breeze. Suddenly, I felt

Damian’s warm hand find its way on

mine. I felt two presences standing

next to me. I looked up and found my

two friends smiling knowingly down at

me.

“You killed him, didn’t you?”

Kim whispered in my ears. “You could-

n’t handle the rejection that he denied

your love so you killed him.” Her voice

lacing with accusation and scorn.

“No! I—I didn’t. I couldn’t!” I

croaked, my eyes brimming with tears.

Kim narrowed her eyes, searching my

face in trace for truth. “Not until the

investigators find out.”

On cue, Damian came next to

me, a grim look swathe his features. I

could feel everyone eying me, their eyes

sparks with pure accusation. He led

me on the crime scene, my heart con-

stricted with fright, and blood left my

system. My white hanky with my name

embroidered on it was found under-

neath Liam’s corpse, smeared with his

blood.

“That’s yours, isn’t it?” Damian

said.
