FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Welcome home to SMP! What better way to beat the heat of summer than with a charming ode to those great movie musicals of the thirties! Those wonderful all-singing, all tap-dancing confections will be well represented by this Dames at Sea AND our new movie series which we are calling Off the Screen @ SMP! I have wanted to produce Dames at Sea for a long time. I have long thought that it would be perfect for SMP. I think you’ll agree that I was right!

Dames isn’t produced very often – and only now do I appreciate why - it takes real “triple threats”! For those unfamiliar with the term – it means the rare actor who can act AND sing AND dance. We are incredibly lucky that so many wonderfully talented ones showed up to make this show happen.

The cast has been led by Joshua Finkel who directs a Main Stage show for the first time after directing for our Off the Page @ SMP reading series. I’ve been looking for the right project to get him to share his particular talents with us and I think we found it! Joshua and I trained together in conservatory many years ago and I am so happy to work with him again.

Joshua introduced me to our choreographer Jeffrey Scott Parsons and I’m thrilled he is now part of the SMP family – his work is so clever as you will soon see. Big thanks to our long-time collaborator Sean Paxton who is music directing the show and is our one-man orchestra.

SMP is really only alive when our patrons are in the house. I love being here when there is a buzz of excitement before a show with our loyal friends milling in the lobby and finding their seats. That’s why it has long been my goal to have as many offerings for our patrons as possible. Now with the launch of our Off the Screen @ SMP film series (which will be an integral part of each show’s programming from now on) we’ll offer one more reason to visit us. There is a listing of the series a few pages away.

Now it’s time see if Ruby, a small town girl new to the Big White Way can go out there a chorus girl and come back a star – and land a husband along the way. Is there any doubt? Oh, did I mention the tap-dancing?

Have a great summer!

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the joyous, hilarious and heartwarming world of Dames at Sea, a small musical that pays homage to the wonderful Busby Berkeley Movie Musicals of the 1930’s - performed with a ‘cast of thousands.’ That is one of the hilarious elements of this show as spelled out by the show’s creators: trying to recreate Busby Berkeley ‘but on a postage stamp’ using only 6 actors! Even though it’s ‘small and simple’ in appearance, it’s quite deceptive and complex! I could not have pulled it off without this TREMENDOUS team of cast and crew. It truly does ‘take a village’ to ‘lick that postage stamp and make it stick!’ I’m so grateful to every member of this team onstage and off, who gave their all to create this magical show. Dames at Sea is based on such classic films as 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, and Footlight Parade -- all of which will be shown here as part of the Off the Screen @ SMP Film Series. I really hope you can take them in as part of this experience. They are delightful, and you’ll be glad you did! You will appreciate the show even more if you do! In those films and in this show, you will be tickled by the optimism, crazy coincidences, and wonderful, familiar and archetypal characters portrayed in both. Even the characters’ names in the musical pay tribute to some of the legendary actors in the original films: Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, and Joan Blondell. Set in the trying and stressful time of The Great Depression of the 1930’s, this show and those films reflect the spirit of America. In the 1930’s, movie audiences were desperate for escape. As they stood on breadlines and dealt with incredible stress in their daily lives, audiences often scraped together a nickel and escaped their troubles by staying inside darkened movie theaters where they could forget their troubles. They needed the optimism and promise of success these films would provide. The American Dream could be realized if one just had enough ingenuity and put in enough hard work. It is amazing how timely this message is in today’s world, isn’t it? That is the real gift of this show. It’s a perfect time to see it. So join us and escape into this warm and wonderful world. Forget your troubles, laugh, be swept away with romance and innocent joy, and truly believe that ‘Good Times are Here to Stay!”

In his varied career, he was also a professional photographer who worked under the name Plato and wrote erotic gay fiction under the name Alexander Goodman. His other stage credits include the musicals Now, Zing! and Johnny American. Mr. Haimsohn died in 2003 at the age of 77. Robin Miller (Book & Lyrics) born in England, he attended Eton, and served as a Grenadier Guard in Palestine in World War II. On leaving the military, he migrated to New York, where he became a journalist and met his co-creators. His other musicals include Vanity Fair, Yankee Ingenuity and the children’s musical Olaf. Mr. Miller died in 2010 at the age of 82. Jim Wise (Music) was born in Akron, OH, and majored in music and English at Wooster College. He earned a master's degree in English from Columbia University and then taught at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, retiring in 1989. In addition to Dames at Sea, which was his major show, Mr. Wise wrote specialty material for Dodi Goodman, Gloria DeHaven, Pat Carroll and Jane Connell. Mr. Wise died in 2000 at the of 81.

A BRIEF HISTORY The musical was originally a short sketch, based on the Warner Bros. Gold Diggers movies and the lavish production numbers staged by Busby Berkeley. The sketch proved successful and it was lengthened to 50 minutes. It first played Off Off Broadway in May,1966 at Caffé Cino in Greenwich Village as Dames at Sea, Golddiggers Afloat, where it ran 148 performances. When the actress playing Ruby withdrew during rehearsals, choreographer Don Price recommended Bernadette Peters. And a star was born. She still performs "Raining in My Heart" in concert. The show reopened with the shorter title and it’s two-act structure at the East Village’s Bouwerie Lane Theatre on December 20, 1968. It transferred to the Theatre de Lys [now the Lortel] on April 22, 1969 and closed on May 10, 1970 after 575 performances. It is one of the few major to get its start Off Off Broadway and is regularly revived around the world. The Off Broadway production won Drama Desk Awards in 1969 for Best Performance (Bernadette Peters), Outstanding Director, and Outstanding Lyrics.

Monthly Reading Series

Selected Mondays @ 7pm at SMP

July 29 Permanent Collection

By Thomas Gibbons Directed by Barbara Schofield

Soon after African-American businessman Sterling North becomes the director of the Morris Foundation, he discovers that this world-famous art collection includes several significant African sculptures tucked away in storage. His proposal to add them to the public galleries is opposed by the foundation's long-time education director. This clash escalates to public accusations of racism and a bitter struggle for control of the collection. Permanent Collection is a searing examination of racial politics that ultimately asks how much space -- literally and figuratively -- the white world gives to African-Americans. "Gibbons' intellectually charged drama is a beautifully balanced dialectic that treats a complicated and emotional issue without cheap conclusions..." - Los Angeles Times

August 26 A Thousand Clowns

By Herb Gardner Directed by Cate Caplin

This benchmark of Broadway comedy produced one of the theatre's most beloved roles: unconventional Murray Burns, uncle to precocious nephew, Nick. Tired of writing cheap comedy gags for "Chipper the Chipmunk", a children's television star, Murray finds himself unemployed with plenty of free time with which to pursue his...pursuits. Lectured by his conventional brother Arnold and hounded by "the system", Murray is paid a visit by bickering, uptight social workers, Sandra and Albert, and finds himself solving their problems as well as most of his own. “Filled with laughter and warmth and sweetness and inspired daffiness. One of the quintessential New York comedies." - New York Daily News

The Joy Luck Club: Mothers, Daughters, and Mahjong

By Fran Syverson When four Chinese women play mahjong every week for years, you can be sure that confidences will be shared: stories of hard lives, tragedies that drove them from China to America, the search for a better life or at least a different one. They call themselves The Joy Luck Club, for the joy they seek and the good luck they hope will come to them. Some ran from forced marriages; some left children behind; there were deaths, abuses, betrayal, painful secrets all told over hands of mahjong. Their American life brought new challenges - each now had a daughter, born of new marriages. These daughters live lives quite different from their immigrant mothers. This is the story of the estrangements and misunderstandings between two generations shaped by different cultures. As the play unfolds before us, we learn all eight of the women’s stories and we share with them their hopes and dreams, not always realized. Regardless of culture, the stories of immigrant mothers and daughters are not so different. The bonds between parents and children are not specific to any culture. In The Joy Luck Club, we see how stories can help us bridge the differences and bind us together through understanding and compassion. The Playhouse focuses on plays by American playwrights telling American stories. The adaptation written by Susan Kim, and the novel on which it is based by Amy Tan, tell a story of immigrants. And, as is Artistic Director Christian Lebano’s intent with all of the stories told at the Playhouse, it tells another version of what is the quintessential American experience. Tim Dang, the former Artistic Director of East West Players, will direct the The Joy Luck Club, back after giving us Nothing is the Same last season. The Joy Luck Club previews August 23 and opens August 24 and plays through October 5 – tickets are on sale now at SierraMadrePlayhouse.org or 626.355.4318.
