Job Title: Sr. Director of WaSH Programs Job Department: Programs Supervisor: VP of Strategy and Development Location: Concord, NH (remote available, depending on candidate) About The Water Project: The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization unlocking human potential by providing sustainable water projects through integrative programs to communities in sub-Saharan Africa who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. To date we have funded over 1,000 water projects and are actively working with 4 implementing partners in two countries.

We’re a growing ($2M+) organization increasingly focused on investing in promising upstart, indigenous NGOs with a new or growing commitment to providing sustainable access to clean water through appropriate, community-driven water projects. Our deep desire is to see those we support and serve flourish through the gift of water, becoming the true catalysts and heroes as their communities climb out of poverty. Discovering innovative ways to measure and communicate the effectiveness of this effort will be a key to deepening the respect, trust and support our growth will demand among our partners and financial supporters.

Today, our nimble team functions as a deeply collaborative startup. As we grow, we intend to maintain this collaborative advantage while carefully building strategies and structures that leverage individual talent by better defining roles, responsibilities and opportunities for professional growth.

As we do, we intend to deepen our culture of hospitality by emphasizing our commitment to servant leadership among our implementing partners, within the communities we serve together, and alongside those who share our desire to help facilitate this work - our supporters. Position overview: The Sr. Director of Programs is responsible for all aspects of The Water Project’s WaSH programs and organizational strategy - including design, development, partner support and training, reporting, monitoring, evaluation & resolution. This leadership position executes with, and through, an existing program staff and coordinates directly with other Senior Leadership within The Water Project. Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the development and implementation of our WaSH strategies. You’ve been around the sector and seen, firsthand, success and failure. You know sector best practices, love data and have a record of moving good programs into great programs.

• Support and development of The Water Project partners/programs through strategic

communication, active listening, goal setting and program development. We exist for the communities we serve, our partners and our donors. You’ll assume full

responsibility to ensure that our organization is supporting the right partners in the right ways.

• Mentor, coach and support program staff through thoughtful delegation, training, one-

on-one development, regular performance reviews. You are your people. When they succeed, you succeed. You are working to build and lead a team of leaders.

• Increase The Water Project’s visible, organizational presence within the sector and

within program areas. We’re learners, but also believe we have some things to share and celebrate. You’re an influencer and well connected. You’ll assure our posture of hospitality follows us in how we relate to the sector, and represent The Water Project boldly.

• Monitor. Evaluate. Resolve. You understand that we’re not selling widgets, we’re

working to improve people’s health. So, results mean everything to the families we serve. You are relentless when it comes to evaluating your work, honest to share what is working and not working – and always seeking the “what now” based on what you learn.

• Excellence in programs means excellence in reporting. The Water Project has a strong

commitment to transparent reporting of all projects. You’ll continue to develop the strongest project reporting in the sector and find new ways to connect our supporters through program reporting.

• Leading The Water Project to be our best. More programming, more projects, more

people served is fantastic – but you’re really after reliable service and WaSH programming that lasts. You’re not afraid to use the “F word” (Failure) when it means that we’ll all be better for those we serve.

Education, Experience and Personal Characteristics: A bachelors’ degree is strongly preferred. At least 5 years of WaSH management experience is required. Candidate must be able to articulate and demonstrate a strong sense of calling to a singular focus of international water and sanitation development, as well as The Water Project’s ethos and mission. Ability to thrive in a start-up environment is a must.

• Builder, leader, implementer of systems – You might always be one step ahead of your team, but that not because you’re going at it alone. After all, what you build today – and the team that you build it with - you’ll be responsible for managing tomorrow. In 10 years The Water Project’s growth will be built on the foundation of systems that you put in place.

• Flexible – You know this work is 100% cross-cultural and interpersonal and things are rarely easy. Your experience makes you cool under pressure and able to get at the heart of issues and communication. You have no problem admitting when you might have been wrong or when things are moving in the wrong direction, because you’re always thinking of new iterations to everything you do. You have stamina for the distance.

• Strategic Collaboration – You could do it alone if you had to, but have learned that building a team, network, and partnerships is where it’s at. You ask for help and are a constant learner and contributor.

• Persistence – If this was easy, it would be done already.

• Balancing Multiple Priorities – You’ll be asked to shepherd multiple organizational

priorities at once, and be looked to as a local expert for much of it. You say – “Bring it on!”

• Detailed, analytical visionary - You see the future, and also see how every detail and

piece of data matters. Your friends are amazed how you remember so much. Your a perfectionist – so much so that you just noticed that we misspelled “you’re”. You know how to delegate your perfectionism so it becomes part of organizational culture.

• Passionate about outcomes. Because, in our world, outcomes are about people. Leave

the paper moving to someone else, you’re jumping head first into what you do and always asking the hard questions.

• You want amazing things for our donors. You're not stewarding a WaSH programming

budget, you are connecting the heart, compassion and story behind every dollar to our work. Story is sacred to you. You're always thinking about how to work with the development and communications team to connect the stories of those we serve to the story behind every dollar we raise.

Working Environment / Conditions:

• New Hampshire office; depending on resume, remote candidates will be considered. • Occasional domestic travel. • Quarterly International travel.

Compensation: The Water Project offers a competitive salary and benefits plan – including employer paid medical insurance for staff, as well as retirement programs.
