District Governor 16-D Governor’s Message

Welcome to Lion Year 2010-2011 and a new year full of hope (Beacon of Hope – the International Presidential Theme, that is!), challenges, and achievements. Let me share with you my goals for 16-D, and my vision of exciting and rewarding work from all of us. You are all good Lions who have joined the Lions organization to demonstrate your commitment and dedication to our worthy Lions cause. I intend to roll up my sleeves and work hard with you this year to make District 16-D shine! My plan for this year is to lead District 16-D on a road to success, both in Club participation and achievements in International, State and District activities. We’ll continue to work on membership and leadership growth under the existing MERLO (Membership, Extension, Retention, Leadership, and Orientation) structure, as well as the new International structure of GMT (Global Membership Team) and GLT (Global Leadership Team). Following the call from International President Sid Scruggs, we’ll also re-focus on “Service” and the related new Global Service Action Campaigns – Shine a light on Youth, Vision, Hunger, and Environment. On top of that, my Governor’s theme for 16-D this year is “Growing from Stability: Membership and Retention”. We certainly need new blood, new energy, and new ideas to grow, but in the meantime, we need to stabilize our district by retaining our good Lions and keeping our good old traditions that we’ve been proud of for so many years. We have many exciting and meaningful projects planned already: Membership Drive, Club Extension Drive (including Leo, Campus, and Century clubs), joint services with other major organizations, connecting to the community (parades, festivals, charitable events, concerts, …), youth programs (Leo clubs, leadership, education, environment, …), communications (District website enhancement, club website construction, email broadcasts, online calendar, online club reports, …), and public relations (news releases, District Introduction Display Board, …). We need everyone’s participation and contribution to make them work. Let’s unite together and work hard together to live up to our motto: We Serve! Yours in Lions Service,

The aim of the Foundation is to raise money through individual contributions, corporate grants, Club donations and various fundraisers, to support eye research, particularly at the Lions eye Research Center which is housed at UMDNJ in Newark, and to help provide necessary equipment used in the service of eye research. The current focus is to raise money for the Lions Ophthalmology Research Chair at UMDNJ.

Meetings & Membership

All New Jersey Lions, in good-standing, are members of the Lions Eye Research Foundation. All members may attend these dinner meetings, but it is requested that prior notice of attendance be given for meal count. Unless otherwise notified, all meetings are at 7PM, and held at the Holiday Inn, Carteret (immediately off NJ Turnpike Exit 12). Meeting dates TBA.

LIONS EULOGY

In the natural course of events, every Lions Club is confronted with the passing of one of its members. The following eulogy may be read or recited by the president or other officer of the club or a club member who was close to the fallen Lion: Fellow Lions, we gather here on the occasion of the passing of our beloved fellow Lion, ___________, who has been one with us in serving the needs of our community and mankind. Our hearts are saddened by his/her passing. But our sadness is tempered by our gratitude, for it has been a privilege to be associated with Lion _________ in human service. Lion__________ was a devoted worker and a true person of character, and loved being a Lion. Lion _________ worked with us in serving worthy causes; share our ideals, purpose and dedication; and exemplified the spirit of Lionism by always extending a helping hand to those less fortunate. Lion_________’s character was expressed in the Credo - Profile of a Lion: “He/She was reverent to his/her God, loyal to his/her country and uncompromising in his/her devotion to both. He/She enjoyed fun and good fellowship and was ever mindful of human concern. He/She gave willingly of his/her time, energy and substance to assist the community and the needy.” As we bid farewell to our fellow Lion, we express our heartfelt sympathy to his/her family and friends. And to his/her memory, we pay our tribute of respect and friendship in the very words that Lion __________ recited in unison with his/her fellow Lions in the Lions’ Toast:
