Value of the Month - Participation
Wheel-a-thon A fantastic day was had by all of our students who pedalled, rode, scooted, bladed and strolled for our Wheel-a-thon today. Thanks so much to our committed students who I am sure will go on to raise a significant amount for us to spend on English resources including fresh new readers and digital texts. Thanks to our parents who were able to help with lap stamping and our ‘pit crew’ who put chains back on bikes in record time.
Garden Competition
Last night Mrs Miller, Mr and Mrs Constantine Mrs Gaffey and I attended the Hawkesbury Garden Competition presentation evening. We were recognised with an encouragement award for the ‘Vegelante’s Garden’ near the reading room. Thanks so much to Linda Constantine, Joanne Stocker and Rod Evans and their families for their hard work in helping our little Vegelantes prepare for the competition. We received a pack of products to help make the garden grow even more as well as a framed certificate and letter from the mayor.
New Resources
Ten more iPads are to be purchased using our technology budget. We are finding that their daily use across the grades and multiple uses in many different Key Learning Areas have necessitated the buying of ten more.
New Tanks
Thanks to Owen O’Rourke and Danny Hopkins for their help with removal and replacement of the water tanks near the lower classrooms. Damian Bellamy and Lou Carpinato have offered to remove the concrete pad from the old tank. We will eventually create a really useful area with a roof that will be used daily and for generations to come.
Road Solution
As discussed at the last two P &C meetings, the community seems pleased with the improvements to Neich Rd for the drop off and collection of students. In a previous newsletter the community were presented with several options for discussion. It was felt by the majority of parents at the last two meetings that the options to include crossings would remove much of the parking area achieved in the first place. Attached at the end of the newsletter is ‘option 3’ which outlines the placement of the bus stop and two ‘No Parking’ areas at either end of the school’s frontage to Neich Rd. Please take the time to look at this option and comment via a message to the school if necessary.
Sport Program
Our Term 4 sporting program is well underway, with Ty introducing some new sports to our students. Our regular sporting sessions continue with some explicit skill development being taught by our amazing teachers.
Community Directory
It was suggested at our last P&C meeting that we should collate and publish a directory of local families’ businesses that we can draw upon as a community when needed, as many people prefer to use local services when available. If you would like to send your details to the school in the next two weeks, we will endeavour to publish this before year’s end in a one-off document. These will not appear in fortnightly newsletters. Our school cannot and does not endorse any particular businesses. We are simply a collection and collation point for the community.
No Assembly this Week!
Due to the swim school taking place in Weeks 3 and 4, there will be no fortnightly assembly. We will have a small morning assembly at 8.45am on Friday 24th to present particular awards.

K It was lovely to see the children’s smiling faces last week. Hopefully you have heard that we are looking at information books about animal predators. We are practising writing sentences independently and trying to sound out the words in our sentences. We are now doing our handwriting on lines and focusing on making our letters a consistent size. In maths we are working hard at adding and subtracting numbers using counting on and counting back. It is wonderful to see the children progressing in their reading skills. Regular reading at home has a huge impact on their confidence and progress. We have some lovely new home readers that are waiting to be read. Lastly you should have received a note this week about our excursion in Week 5 to Calmsley Hill Farm.
1
This week, Year 1 has been reading fairy tales. We have been retelling them in our own words and typing them on the computer. We are making them into our own little books. We have been learning about subtraction. Other words that mean the same are “take away” and “minus”. We have been looking after the vegetable garden. We entered it in the Hawkesbury Council Gardening Competition and we find out on Thursday night how we went. We have been learning about celebrations in HSIE. We are learning about fossils in Science.
2
Welcome back hope you had a great holiday. This term we are looking at celebrations in English & HSIE. Later on in the term for science we will be investigating fossils. Thank you to the parents who came to see the music festival on Wednesday night, how fantastic were our little singers? Looking forward to swim school for the 2 next weeks, I will be taking them.
3/4
We all had an enjoyable day at the Wheel-a-thon on Friday. Cannot wait until we find out how much money we have raised for the school! After returning from our Zoo Snooze last term all the photos have been loaded onto the computers and each child is now putting together their own diary with pictures into a power point presentation. They are looking very professional. This term, Year 3/4 has been learning about the earth and what it is made up of. We have been reading a book called "The Magic School Bus inside the Earth." The class has learnt about the magnetic force field that comes from the inner core that protects us from the sun. We also have a new class pet which is a Venus Fly trap. The class is reading a factual text about this meat eating plant and busily catching small insects to feed it. We called it Fang. Do not forget the disco next week as it should be a fun night.

5/6
Our class has begun their science unit on the preservation of food through ‘Kitchen Science’. We plan on making things get pretty mouldy and rotten throughout the term. We have ongoing experiments on the rate of decomposition of fruit and we will begin with our bread experiment next week. Below is our experiment on the effect of yeast combining with sugar. The students discovered that the chemical reaction with the two causes bubbles to be produced, just like in the making of bread and, yes, beer. The bubbles produced caused the balloons to become inflated. We have talked about the use of a ‘control’ bottle and the basis on which to conduct a ‘fair’ test. Despite what the Year 6 boys claim, we are not opening a class beer factory. Sorry dads!
It’s OK…. It has legs! Our friendly Blue Tongue lizard needs a name…. any ideas?
Let your class SRC know. We will discuss it at our next meeting and you might be the one whose name
sticks!

The last normal canteen day will be Friday 5th Dec. We are considering a Subway meal deal for Wednesday 10th Dec and perhaps be open for snacks only. Further information to come……
Canteen Manager/s Needed!
We are seeking new canteen manager/s for 2015 as Catherine and Vanessa are unable to continue in this position but are keen to assist in any way they can .
They are keen to fill this role before year’s end so as to ease the successor into the role during Term 4 to ensure a smooth transition into 2015. If we are unable to fill this position we will unfortunately have to close the canteen to our students. This service would be greatly missed by our students who really love buying something from the canteen and maybe seeing their parent or grandparent behind the counter.
If you are able to assist in this rewarding and worthwhile role please make contact with either Catherine, Vanessa or the school office.
