We are delighted to present to you an autumn 2015 schedule jam-packed with exciting new fiction, charming seasonal gift books and perfect film tie-in opportunities.

July sees the publication of stunning debut novel The Unforgotten by Laura Powell (see pages 4-5). A perfect book club read, it is a haunting love story set against a dark backdrop of murder, secrets and suspicion.

Following on from the success of The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman (a BBC Radio 2 Book Club title) we publish Denis Thériault’s forgotten debut novel The Boy Who Belonged to the Sea (see pages 6-7). Once again it is a moving and lyrical tale of loss and longing which we have packaged beautifully.

We have another title from best-selling international author Jussi Adler-Olsen, writer of the ‘Department Q’ series. Takeover has never been published in English before, and follows wealthy and cynical Dutch businessman Peter de Boer and his feisty protégée Nicky Landsaat, who end up embroiled with dangerous adversaries who have dubious political agendas (see page 9).

October sees us publish the sequel to million-copy best-seller Death in Pont-Aven. Murder on Brit-tany Shores follows the cantankerous Commissaire Dupin tackling a complicated new case on the beautiful coast of Brittany (see page 10).

2015 is going to be yet another big year at the cinemas. In October Steven Spielberg releases his blockbuster St James Place. In it Tom Hanks plays the lawyer James B. Donovan who was recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to help rescue a pilot detained in the Soviet Union. We publish the first ever biography of James B. Donovan entitled Negotiator in October – perfectly timed to take advantage of interest the film will raise in his amazing life story (see page 8).

A new version of Ben-Hur releases in cinemas in February 2016, and we publish an eye-catching edition of Lew Wallace’s classic novel in November (see page 21). Plus the exciting news has recently been announced that Scarlett Johansson will star in and executive produce a TV series based on Edith Wharton's 1913 novel The Custom of the Country: we publish a stunning new version of the book in August (see page 14).

Our festive offerings include The Cricket on the Hearth – the third of Dickens’ Christmas books; a Christmas themed new Minor title from the creator of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus and a quirky gift book perfect for the Downton Abbey enthusiast – The Butler’s Guide to Household Management and Proper Behaviour (see pages 20, 24 and 18).

We hope autumn 2015 offers something for everyone in paperback, hardback and ebook.

Hesperus Nova: July 2015

Across the room, through the fog of tobacco smoke, Betty notices him. His teacup is empty, his eyes are low and he doesn’t speak. She wants him to notice her. She wants to impress.

Fifteen-year-old Betty Broadbent helps her erratic and beautiful mother run the Hotel Eden, a boarding house now besieged by reporters, keen for juicy gossip and eye-catching headlines. They are there because the Cornish seaside town has recently witnessed a string of murders, young girls stabbed to death. Among the newspaper jackals, Mr Gallagher stands out. Quiet, serious Mr Gallagher – Betty is fascinated by his mysterious nature and desperate to be noticed by him and not be treated as a child.

As he and Betty get to know each other, through snatched conversation and illicit meetings, their feelings for each other grow. But she soon starts to realise how little she knows about the older, enigmatic journalist. With a dangerous cloud looming over the town, Betty starts to take risks to see him and hide secrets from her mother, her friends and even herself. Secrets that will echo through the years and affect the lives of many…

Laura Powell grew up in South Wales and studied at Warwick University. She later completed an MA at Goldsmiths, University of London, for which she was granted a Scott Trust Bursary from the Guardian Media Group, and the Faber Academy novel writing course. Several of her poems and short stories have been published in small literary magazines and anthologies, and she was awarded a New Writer’s Bursary from Literature Wales in 2013.

The UnforgottenLaura Powell

At six o’clock Betty pads into the kitchen, still groggy with sleep. The air is yeasty and Mother is up to her elbows in greasy dishwater, singing along to a Fats Domino concert on the wireless but not quite keeping up with the words. ‘I couldn’t stop thinking last night about that poor, poor dead girl,’ says Betty. ‘Nonsense, too busy for idle gossip,’ snaps Mother, then she grins and her voice changes. ‘But you slept like a little angel. I watched you but you didn’t wake once. And look, what a day! Sun shining, birds singing just for us.’ She lets out a little whoop. Betty kisses Mother’s forehead but her insides prickle. The only days Mother talks this fast and wakes this early are the days before a crash; before her mood springs high and crumbles, leaving her in bed for days, weeks sometimes, until she can pull herself upright. Betty clears an empty gin bottle and lipsticked tumbler from the floor. She is wondering whether to ask Mother about them, when a cough cuts in. She whips around. Gallagher is standing in the kitchen doorway staring at her. ‘Mr Gallagher,’ gushes Mother, cutting between them. ‘Early riser, aren’t you? Sit yourself down in the big room and I’ll bring in breakfast. Kippers all right for you?’ She crosses the kitchen to stroke his arm, the way she does with all of her favourite male guests before they fall in love with her for a week. Betty looks away. Suddenly there is a loud pop, as boiling water spits out of the kipper pan. ‘Whoops-a-daisy,’ squeals Mother, flapping a tea towel and giggling. Betty looks back to see Gallagher’s reaction but he has slipped into the big room. He sits at a breakfast table, his long back facing her and his head pointed at the window covered with yellowing net curtains. ‘Do something, take him tea,’ whispers Mother, pushing a cold teapot into her hand, and Betty can see how desperate she is to get it right. They aren’t used to making a dozen breakfasts at once; there might be two couples or sometimes a family but Betty has never seen Hotel Eden so crammed full that men are sandwiched in, two to a room. Only Gallagher has his own bedroom. He paid triple rate for it, so Mother said. ‘Betty, today, please. We’re brewing a pot of tea, not a bloody thunderstorm.’ Mother pinches the bridge of her nose as Betty fills the pot and hurries into the big room. ‘Lovely morning, isn’t it?’ she says in a high-pitched voice that doesn’t sound like her own. ‘Some tea?’ Gallagher doesn’t seem to hear. Betty watches his face as she pours. She doesn’t notice that there isn’t a teacup on his saucer, or that hot black tea fills it and dribbles onto the placemat.

‘A beguiling story about love, loneliness and the modern world’ The Independent‘There is a charming playfulness to Thériault’s prose’ The Guardian

Hesperus Nova: September 2015

The first novel by the author of The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman is a beautifully touching story of friendship, hope and despair – richly imaginative and stunningly lyrical.

It is a sense of remoteness and abandon that first draws the two boys together. Each having lost a parent, they are trying to come to terms with their places in the world and find a sense of hope once more.

As they struggle to understand where they’ve come from, they construct a wild, underwater fantasy land where they look for the keys to solving problems in the world above. It is this shared adventure and spirit that sets the boys apart as being unusual and isolated, and firmly bonds their friendship. However, as the lines between reality and fantasy begin to blur, their search for belonging takes them on a perilous journey that will ultimately have tragic consequences.

Winner of the Prix Anne-Hébert, the Prix France-Québec and the Prix Odyssée, The Boy Who Belonged to the Sea is a moving novel with dramatic flair and lyrical imagination.

Denis Thériault was born on the north shore of the Gulf of St Lawrence, near Sept-Îles, Quebec, has a degree in psychology and is an award-winning screenwriter who lives with his family in

The other day, in front of Madame Papet’s place, they found a washed-up basking shark the length of a house, with jaws so huge it could have swallowed me whole without even noticing, like plankton. The men scratched their heads at the sight of the enormous carcass. They argued back and forth, wondered what to do with it; they couldn’t leave it there because it was obviously causing an obstruction, and also because of the smell which had already begun to rise. While they started to cut it up with a chainsaw, some guys from Fisheries and Oceans turned up to record this wreck on land. They stopped the work and took photographs just like police inspectors. All that was missing was the tape, that yellow thing they put up to decorate a crime. I thought they were going to take our fingerprints while they were at it, but they didn’t in the end; we weren’t suspicious enough. After the photographs, the government people sent for a crane and a truck to haul the shark away. I don’t know where to. The morgue? A museum? The dump? More likely to the Department of Oceanic Affairs, I suppose, where they’d put it away in a cartilaginous folder. Or in a very large – previously deodorized – file thirteen. I wonder what that shark died of. It had no injuries, wasn’t tangled up in any net. Some shark disease? A maritime problem? A tsunami? An overpowering wave of melancholy? What is the lifespan of a shark, anyway?

* * *

In spite of the gulls, I’m never the first one to arrive on the beach. There’s always that other kid who’s ahead of me – Luc Bezeau, with that mug of his that reminds me of a radiation victim from the other side of the world, with his Newfie boots, his gawky clown-like walk, and that cap emblazoned with the crest of a heavy-machinery company, incongruously topping his worrisome scrawniness. He comes from the west, dragging along his garbage bag like a janitor as he combs the shore. He collects the empty bottles from around fires lit the previous night by careless fishermen looking for caplins or by other passing gypsies. In a satchel, he gathers empty shells of shellfish, crab backs, feathers, and bits of whalebone. In the beginning, I took him for some sort of environmentalist, but I changed my mind when I saw him leave in his wake all other types of waste. Rain or shine, he turns up every morning, as if that were his mission, except on Sundays, for he has religious obligations on that day. He serves mass at the village church, and since I go there with Grandmother, I can see him orbiting Father Loiselle, that gaseous giant, like some dusky dwarf. Luc makes a peculiar altar boy. With his heavy boots sticking out beneath the skimpy white vestment, with that air he has of a gag that fell flat, his Hawaiian mop of jet-black hair, and especially that faraway look in his almond eyes – those strange X-ray eyes he aims at you as if to see right through you – you’d think he’d just disembarked from a UFO or stepped out of a dryer, but that doesn’t stop him from performing his functions expertly. He officiates with a pope-like solemnity… If he let me, I would definitely try to befriend him, or at the very least say hello to him on the beach when he comes ambling along at the crack of dawn, but that’s impossible because he’s opposed to such familiarities. As soon as he sees me slouching about near the flagpole or on the veranda gobbling up a chocogrunt, he hurries away without even looking at me. Could he be terribly shy? Or is he perhaps too sensitive to the aura of tragedy that emanates from me?

Negotiator: The Life and Career of James B. DonovanPhilip J. Bigger

Hesperus Nova: August 2015 8

The true story behind Steven Spielberg’s major motion picture St James Place, Negotiator is the first and only biography of intrepid attorney James B. Donovan who was recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to broker near-impossible negotiations.

Charming, bold and good-humoured, James Donovan led a fascinating career as a negotiator on behalf of prisoners. Touchstone Pictures are releasing St James Place in October 2015, directed by Steven Spielberg with a script written by the Coen brothers and starring Tom Hanks as Dono-van. To coincide with the film, Hesperus is thrilled to publish an exclusive paperback biography of his life, written by Philip J. Bigger.

Fresh out of law school, Donovan enrolled in the United States Navy during the Second World War and, towards the end of the war, was charged with collecting and recording evidence of Nazi atrocities, a role that then transitioned into his becoming a prosecutor at the Nuremburg trials.

Once returned to the US he set up a private legal practice, and his reputation grew rapidly. In 1957, he became involved with defending the captured Russian spy Rudolph Abel and then rapidly be-came embroiled in a much larger international po-litical melee as he attempted to secure the release of the captured U-2 pilot, Francis Gary Powers (the focus of Spielberg’s film). His career would then see another twist as he was entrusted with negotiating directly with Fidel Castro over the fate of the prisoners from the Bay of Pigs affair.

This fascinating biography sheds light on the life of this extraordinary attorney and humanitarian, whose accomplishments should not be forgotten.

Now retired, Philip J. Bigger worked as an administrator in probation and pre-trial services for the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn.

‘As if casting two-time winner Tom Hanks as Cold War-era lawyer recruited by the CIA to rescue an American pilot wasn’t enough to ensure an Oscar shot, Steven Spielberg went and hauled in the Coen brothers to polish up the screenplay’ Time Out

Wealthy and cynical businessman Peter de Boer heads up Christie, a venture capitalist company. He specialises in aggressive takeovers and takes pleasure in taking down erstwhile successful busi-nesses.In contrast, Nicky Landsaat’s background couldn’t be more different. With few advantages in life and desperate to escape her miserable domestic set-up, she has been forced to fight for her newly acquired job at Christie and no one thinks she will make it.

But the real trouble begins when de Boer is approached with an unusual request, the Iraqi intelligence service want to bring down a household-name Western corporation and they think the aggressive businessman is just the man for the job. Caught between Iraqi threats to expose a dark secret and his remaining shreds of decency, de Boer is going to be playing a dangerous game but this time dealing with terrorists rather than the boardroom, and it looks like Nicky is going to be dragged along for the ride.

Takeover is an exciting fast-paced tale by the Dan-ish master, reminiscent of John Grisham and Fred-erick Forsyth. Well-developed characters battle for control and power against exotic backdrops, with the same style and panache that fans will recognise from Jussi-Adler Olsen’s ‘Department Q’ series.

This stunning crime novel sees cantankerous Commissaire Dupin tackling a complicated new case on the beautiful coast of Brittany.

Also available:

‘Roll over, Maigret. Commissaire Dupin has arrived’ M.C. Beaton

A little distance from the coast of Brittany lie the Glénan islands, a true island paradise boasting sparkling white sands, or at least so they appear to be until one day in May three bodies wash up on the store. Two of them lying close together, their arms outstretched, almost touching. At first glance the deaths might appear to have been caused by an accident but as the iden-tities of the victims come to light it seems that there are coincidences enough for it to be a case of cold-blooded murder.

Dupin is back. And the cantankerous, coffee-swigging detective’s mood hasn’t improved... Ever viewed as an outsider in a Brittany full of myths and traditions, he finds himself drawn once more deep into the history of the land as another mur-der case lands on his desk.

In this sequel to the bestselling Death in Pont-Aven, Jean-Luc Bannalec once again succeeds in pulling off a majestic, twisting mystery, steeped in the at-mosphere of Brittany, peppered with wry humour and with a plot guided along by the inimitable Commissaire Dupin, who is sure to make the most of the excellent food and drink on offer in the Département.

Jean-Luc Bannalec is a pseudonym; the author divides his time between Germany and southern Finistère. Death in Pont-Aven, the first case for Detective Dupin, was published in German in March 2012 and spent many months on the bestseller list. The series has sold over 1 million copies worldwide to date.

‘Burroughs is probably the most influential writer in the entire history of the world... by giving romance and adventure to a whole generation of boys, he caused them to go out and decide to become special’ Ray Bradbury

1916. It’s wartime and an American ship has just been torpedoed. Flung into the open seas, Bowen Tyler is rescued and taken captive aboard an enemy submarine.

With him held prisoner alongside fellow survivor, the beautiful Lys la Rue, the submarine enters uncharted seas. On the horizon, land is spotted – a mysterious island, previously undiscovered. Cautiously, crew and prisoners alike disembark to explore the strange new continent. Surrounded by primeval jungle, they are soon to discover that life here has stood still for millions of years, with Neanderthals and dinosaurs still roaming.

Taking charge immediately, Tyler sets up camp and brokers a tentative pact between prisoners and crew for them to work together. But Tyler’s new life will be a constant fight for survival. Peace between the factions in his camp will crumble, the Neanderthals will attack, and the dinosaurs are getting closer. And finally when Lys La Rue is kidnapped, Tyler knows he must leave the safety of camp and battle to save her, while getting ever closer to unravelling the secrets of the incredible continent of Caspak.

The Land that Time Forgot is a classic lost world novel and the first in the Caspak trilogy, from a master of the genre, and it is releasing just as Jurassic World, the latest dinosaur adventure in the Jurassic Park franchise, hits cinemas.

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) was an American journalist and author. During the Second World War, he was one of the oldest war correspondents in op-eration. Today he is best remembered as the writer of such adventures novels as The Land that Time Forgot and as the creator of the Tarzan series.

‘One of the most enjoyable great novels ever written’ Margaret Drabble, The Guardian

A forgotten classic by the acclaimed author of The Age of Innocence, The Custom of the Country recounts the story of Undine Spragg, a young out-of-town girl attempting to social climb in New York City, with devastating effects. It is soon to be adapted into a television series starring Scarlett Johansson and produced by Sony Pictures TV.

The Spraggs, a nouveau riche family with a shady background, have been enticed to New York City in an attempt to please their beautiful but deter-mined daughter, Undine. She might have rapidly snared Ralph Marvell, a member of an illustrious but impoverished family, but a shadow from her previous life lingers in the shape of a threaten-ing acquaintance from her Midwest days, Elmer Moffatt.

Faced with the reality of a disappointing family life, Undine soon embarks on an affair and her marriage swiftly breaks down. But, once divorced, Undine loses her place in society and her attempts to trap another husband are rendered problematic by her status as a divorcee… Resorting to black-mail, the ruthless Undine plays a dangerous game and things start to go awry as her secrets gradually begin to emerge with devastating results.

Considered by many to be her masterpiece, Julian Fellowes cites Wharton’s classic as his inspiration for his vision for Downton Abbey, saying, ‘In Un-dine Spragg, Wharton has created an anti-heroine absolutely in the same rank as Becky Sharp, Scar-lett O’Hara, or Lizzie Eustace.’

American novelist Edith Wharton (1862–1937) is best remembered for her finely crafted stories depicting New York life, including The Age of Innocence.

The JacketJack London

Truly original and imaginative, The Jacket is a horrific, hopeful and profound story from American Great, Jack London. Best known for his children’s books, his range of classics, including The Jacket (originally entitled The Star Rover in the US), have too long been forgotten.

Darrell Standing is serving a life sentence in San Quentin State Prison for murder. Brutalised and straightjacketed, he is left in the dark in solitary confinement for prolonged periods of time. In despair and on the verge of giving up on life, he stumbles upon an incredible way of coping with the torture – by forcing himself into a trance and learning astral projection.

Darrell relates his trances that allow him to experience past lives and different worlds, as wanderings through the stars. In his imagination, he drives horse-drawn wagons through crimson dust with Mormons in the Midwest, is the sole-survivor of a shipwreck in Polynesia in the sixteenth century and becomes a bloodthirsty Danish mercenary who meets Pilate in Jerusalem at the time of Christ.

Framing the wild tales of his experiences in the trances are Darrell’s profound and moving memoirs as he serves his sentence, goes through five years in solitary confinement and ends up a broken man. Gripping at its core, this book thus also offers a fresh perspective on the criminal justice system, on prisoners’ punishment versus rehabilitation.

ReanimatorH.P. Lovecraft

Take a walk on the dark side and discover an array of disturbing, often forgotten horror classics from master of weird fiction, H.P. Lovecraft, best known for creating The Call of Cthulhu.

Herbert West is a medical student with an unusual passion: reanimating dead bodies. Consumed by his obsessive experiments, West eventually manages to bring people back to life using a special serum he has created. But he has no idea of the horror he will unleash with the zombies he creates – or rather, an army of monsters, who are out for revenge.

This spine-chilling volume also collects some of Lovecraft’s most striking stories about the undead and other terrifying people, from the traveller who takes refuge in an abandoned house, only to be confronted by an enigmatic man with a horrifying past in ‘The Picture in the House’; to the trio who fatally underestimate a local villager who seems more eccentric than harmless in ‘The Terrible Old Man’. Discover the truth behind why the killing of cats is forbidden in one particular town in ‘The Cats of Ulthar’ and what happens when a daydreaming boy stumbles upon a tomb with his name on it in ‘The Tomb’.

H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American author, editor and journalist. Although he died in poverty, having received little recognition for his numerous works in magazines, he is now regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of all time. Amongst his best known works are The Call of Cthulhu and The Shadow Out of Time.

A new collection of macabre tales from master of horror H.P. Lovecraft, including Reanimator, considered to be one of the first zombie stories ever published.

‘I think it is beyond doubt that H.P. Lovecraft has yet to be surpassed as the twentieth century’s greatest practicioner of the classic horror tale’ Stephen King ‘He’s a master of mood, of sweeping blasted vistas of despair and the bone-soaking cold of space’ Elizabeth Bear, The Guardian

Confession of a MurdererJoseph RothTranslated by Jonathan Katz

From master storyteller Joseph Roth, author of The Radetzky March, comes an intense, lyrical work about love, hate and everything in between in a brand new translation.

A young man walks into a café in 1930s Paris. Listening to the babble of Russian émigrés gossiping around him, he overhears people casually discussing a ‘murderer’ called Golubtschik sitting right there in the café. Intrigued and appalled, the young man settles down to listen to Golubtschik’s life story after closing time. He spins a dark and captivating tale, detailing his story from its humble beginnings. The illegitimate son of a duke, he grew up with his poverty-stricken mother and her husband, always wondering how different his life might have been if he had been brought up by the duke in luxurious surroundings. Recruited into the Russian secret service after a brush with the law, he travels to Paris and falls in love with the beautiful Lutetia, a volatile and enchanting woman.

It is here in Paris that Golubtschik stumbles upon his legitimate half-brother in bed with Lutetia, and flies into a terrible rage. Beating them and leaving them for dead, he gets away with the crime and earns his reputation as a murderer. But as he finishes his tale in the Parisian café all these years later, there comes a twist to the tale which not even Golubtschik could have foreseen.

Joseph Roth (1894–1939) was an Austrian journalist best known for his family saga The Radetzky March. He was Jewish, born in the Austro-Hungarian empire and served in the Habsburg Army during the First World War. He died in Paris in 1939.

A Russian exile shares details of his colourful and shocking life with an enrapt audience in this classic novel from European master Joseph Roth.

Chosen to illustrate Fitzgerald’s complicated relationship with his complex female characters, Hesperus’s collection is made up of the short stories The Ice Palace, Bernice Bobs Her Hair and The Jelly Bean, perfectly capturing the pressures on women of the time and the various roles that they were forced to play.

But she will soon realise that her dreams of reinventing her life in the chilly northern latitudes might end in a nightmare instead.

The Cricket on the HearthCharles Dickens

With the same festive cheer and uplifting spirit as encapsulated in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and The Chimes, this tale is a charming read for Christmas and throughout the year.

Mr and Mrs Peerybingle have a very special guardian angel: their family is protected by a cricket who constantly chirps on their hearth. The Peerybingles have been happily married for a year when their miserly acquaintance, Mr Tackleton, plants a seed of doubt in Mr Peerybingle’s mind, making him start to have second thoughts about the marriage. He even shows Jon a scene where Mrs Peerybingle appears to be cheating on him with their mysterious lodger. Poor Mr Peerybingle is devastated and contemplating the drastic step of divorce.

But in steps their trusty cricket who chirps his way to convincing Mr Peerybingle that it has all been a huge misunderstanding. The happy ending is complete when the meddling Mr Tackleton realises the error of his ways and turns over a new leaf. With his typical wit, Dickens delivers a light-hearted Christmas tale to entertain and amuse.

Charles Dickens (1812–70) is one of England’s most important literary figures. His works enjoyed enormous success in his day and are still regarded as among the most popular and widely read classics of all time.

Ben-HurLew Wallace

A classic epic novel first published in 1880, Ben-Hur has enchanted generations familiar both with Lew Wallace’s legendary book, and the award-winning 1959 film. Set in biblical times in Jerusalem, it tells the story of Ben-Hur whose life intertwines with Jesus’. With a new Hollywood remake due for cinema release in February 2016, rediscover the original book that started a sensation.

When Jewish nobleman Judah Ben-Hur comes face to face with his childhood friend Messala, it becomes apparent that they have both changed in the last few years. Messala has returned home to Jerusalem as commanding officer of a Roman legion and, when a roof tile accidentally knocks the Roman governor from his horse during a parade, Messala accuses his childhood friend of attempted assassination. In a land where summary justice prevails, Ben-Hur is sent to work on the galley ships for life, his property is seized and his family imprisoned (and destined to catch leprosy).

Dodging death by chance on the slave ship, Ben-Hur survives against the odds. From then on, trained as warrior and a charioteer, he resolves to seek redemption and revenge for his family, whatever the price might be. Ben-Hur is the ultimate tale of plotted revenge, compassion and forgiveness.

Lewis ‘Lew’ Wallace (1827–1905) was an American lawyer from Indiana who fought as a general on the side of the Union in the American Civil War, became governor of the New Mexico Territory, as well as being a widely successful author. Today he is best known for his bestselling epic tale Ben-Hur, published in 1880.

A falsely accused nobleman survives years of slavery to take vengeance in this epic novel, soon to be a new Major Motion Picture.

‘Pinocchio was not just a puppet creation, but a symbol of a newly unified Italian nation’ The Guardian‘One of the most famous children’s stories in the world’ The Independent

Hesperus Minor: August 2015

Everyone knows the Disney film Pinocchio, but the original, dark story of the boy puppet is crying out to be rediscovered. A poor Florentine craftsman called Gepetto is delighted to be given a gift of talking wood and immediately sets about carving it into the shape of a marionette puppet. His creation is Pinocchio, a mischievous boy who runs away as soon as he learns to walk.

Little Pinocchio finds it very hard to be good, and constantly struggles to learn the life lessons which Gepetto and other characters try to teach him. When a talking cricket tries to warn Pinocchio about being obedient, Pinocchio accidentally kills him. A very different fate to Jiminy Cricket’s in the Disney film.

A constant struggle to avoid danger and be good eventually leads Pinocchio to try hard at school and pass with flying colours. He meets a good fairy, and after a few detours such as being sold to a circus, Pinocchio eventually proves to her that he is good, although he is disappointed that he is still a puppet. The fairy then throws him a party and transforms him into a real boy at last.

An entertaining story for children, with deeper meanings for the adults who read it to them, The Adventures of Pinocchio is an enduring tale of the difficulty of behaving well and what it means to be good.

Carlo Collodi (1826–1890) was an Italian children’s writer who gained worldwide recognition as the creator of the perennial favourite character, Pinocchio. He was active in the political world, founding a satirical newspaper called Il Lampione, and wrote non-fiction as well as translating from French. He died before he ever knew the success that his creation would go on to have around the world.

The Life and Adventures of Santa ClausL. Frank Baum

A magical Christmas classic by the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, telling the story of Santa Claus.

From the creator of the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz comes the hilarious and entertaining festive tale for the whole family, The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. Starring the Santa Claus whom we all know and love, L. Frank Baum’s story takes us back to the fantastical origins of so many of our Christmas traditions as well as the humble origins of Santa Claus himself.

Not many people know that, as a baby, Santa Claus was found by a woodsman in the Forest of Burzee, and placed into the care of the lioness, Shiegra, and the wood nymph, Necile. Although he is mortal, he is reared and educated by the many immortals of the forest: the gnomes, the sleep fays, the wind demons and the sound imps. But when Santa grows up, they encourage him to leave the forest so that he can see for himself the sad things that come with being a mortal, such as war and poverty. Once Santa has come to understand these issues, he makes it his mission to cheer up mortals and do good deeds for them.

This tale unfolds the surprising reasons why Santa Claus invented toys, why he must deliver them at night and how he came to use reindeers to take him all over the world. Adults and children alike will be captivated by this magical, feel-good story as told by the master of children’s fantasy, L. Frank Baum.

Lyman Frank Baum (1856 –1919) was an American author of children’s books, best known for writing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He wrote thirteen novel sequels, nine other fantasy novels, and a host of other works, totalling fifty-five novels, eighty-three short stories, over two hundred poems and an unknown number of scripts.
