North East Wildlife The Irish Demesne Mount Stewart is an exceptional example of an Irish demesne, a beautiful and productive estate, with farmland, woodland, orchards and a walled garden providing for the ‘big house’. Bought by the Stewarts in 1744, the woodlands they planted, the estate rides, follies and farmland remain largely unchanged. Off the beaten track Discover a rich landscape of farmland, woodland, monuments and buildings, and a breathtaking hidden glen as you explore the historic demesne. Phase one of the restoration of the demesne walks includes three miles of walking trails through a truly magical landscape of woodlands and mixed farmland, set within the iconic rolling drumlin landscape of east Down. Fabulous views On a clear day there are wonderful views of Strangford Lough, Mourne Mountains and Belfast Hills from Temple of the Winds. Wildlife watch Look out for: Our native and endangered red squirrel Bluebells, primroses and other wild flowers Buzzards soaring overhead and birds singing The drumming of our new visitor, the great spotted woodpecker Bees and butterflies collecting pollen in the meadows Fungi in the autumn woodlands Wintering farmland birds feeding on the left over stubble fields NTmountstewart The National Trust is an independent registered charity no. 205846 @NTmountstewart What’s next?
