Presentation Outline Objectives The training Data collection : interview Training evaluation Challenges Discussing the challenges students face
when analysing multi-media data Discussion and lesson learned Conclusions
Computer- aided qualitative research 2011
Previous training lesson learned Time limitation during workshop gives a
big impact towards students understanding ATLAS.ti: The level of knowledge The exposure of the software
Sample data needs to be taken from real computer science student To give a better understanding how ATLAS.ti
would help students in analyzing their data
Computer- aided qualitative research 2011
Objectives To improve previous training based on the
lesson learned To train the IT novice postgraduate
students (School of Computer Sciences, USM) on qualitative data analysis and ATLAS.ti
To share the knowledge of using ATLAS.ti as a tool for analyzing qualitative data
Computer- aided qualitative research 2011
The training
To improve previous training, we do 2 major improvement on:
Number of participants: Lessen the number of participants From 19 participants to 10 participants
Training time duration Increase the training time duration From 2 hours training to 8 hours training
Computer- aided qualitative research 2011
The training(time management)8 hours of training Introduction to Qualitative Research (2
hours) Computer Assisted Qualitative Data
Analysis System (CAQDAS) (1 hour) Atlas.ti (2 hours) Hands –on (3 hours)
Computer- aided qualitative research 2011
The training (Content)4 major contents: Introduction to Qualitative Research Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis
System (CAQDAS) Atlas.ti functionalities Hands –on session using a real-life research data
Computer- aided qualitative research 2011
The training (Content)Hands –on session using a real-life research data : Explain the scope of the research Explain the rational of the data To give better understanding about the data and
how to analyse the data using ATLAS.ti Teach participants to use the data to:
Create codes Create memos Create family Create networks
Computer- aided qualitative research 2011
Data collection: interview To understand the learning aspects of the
ATLAS.ti training from the participants To know the whether the training is
successful or not 10 participants are divided into 2 focus
group Each group (5 participants) is interviewed
by 1 interviewer for 30 minutes

Conclusion This training shows that time and number
of participants give a huge impact towards the successful of the training
It gives a better exposure to participants on qualitative analysis and using the tool
It can be a yearly even to share the knowledge of using ATLAS.ti among IT graduates students in USM
