FELLOW LIONS OF DISTRICT 29-I: Fall is fast approaching and this is the time in our Lion year to begin gearing up. Many Lions Clubs experience a break during the summer months. Our first half dues notices have been sent and many clubs have cleaned up their rosters from the past fiscal year. I would like all of you to share the message that this is a brand new year and membership recruitment is a priority in your club and in our district. I urge all of you to consider sharing in several other ways. Please schedule your official District Governor’s visit as soon as possible. I would like to share my message with as many of you as I can, early in the Lion’s year. The earlier that you get the opportunity to hear my message and International President Preston’s theme, the earlier that you can begin reaching out to others in the “ASK 1“ campaign and the “Each One Reach One” program that I am asking all Lions to participate in. Remember also, that I would rather not travel too far from home in the winter months. I am asking all zone chairpersons to schedule their first two zone meetings by November if at all possible. This will allow club officers to begin the year by setting goals and sharing ideas with other clubs in their zones. Many of the zone chairpersons are asking the clubs in their zone to sponsor joint projects. This has already occurred in several zones. In Zone 2, three clubs sponsored the Mobile Eye Screening Unit at the Mineral County Fair. The clubs in Zones 8 & 9 were happy to get together and have joint District Governor’s Visits. Both events were picnics that were well attended. Lions gathered to share ideas and enjoy great food and fellowship. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the clubs in these zones for showing Lion Sue and I a great time. I urge all Lions Clubs in District 29-I to participate in the fall conference with enthusiasm and strength. Please take this opportunity to represent your club at our conference and share your thoughts and ideas with the other Lions in attendance. We often believe that we have to reinvent things when in reality we just need to borrow what others have done and tweak things a bit to meet our individual needs. The Fall Conference at Canaan Valley Resort will give you the opportunity to revitalize your clubs, borrow different ideas and hopefully become energized for the upcoming year. Remember that you must reserve your rooms early. September 16th is fast approaching. Consider participation in the various District Governor’s Contests this year. The contests are specifically designed to allow clubs the opportunity to share through visitation, communication and publicity. FIRST IMPRESSIONS - VDG AL COX

Hello, WV District 29-Lions! It’s hard to believe that summer is quicklycoming to an end and we are less than a month away from the first day of fall on September 23rd.

In mid-August, I was privileged to be invited to visit Leader Dogs for theBlind in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Leader Dog was founded by three Detroitarea Lions in 1939 and they are now celebrating their 75th anniversary. Also attending were First Vice District Governors from WV MD 29-O, Duane White

and 29-N, Ken Valko. We were very impressed with the great work Leader Dog is doing in helpingblind or visually impaired people worldwide. Plus, they are now providing guide dogs for folks who areboth deaf and blind. Leader Dog also offers a GPS technology program for individuals who use a caneinstead of a guide dog. The GPS program empowers clients to identify their current location and plantheir own travel route, rather than relying on others to fill this need. In addition, Leader Dog providesa Summer Experience Camp for 16 and 17 year olds who are legally blind which combines leadershipand fun activities with an introduction to guide dogs.

Leader Dogs for the Blind is in the midst of a $14.5 million Canine Development Center Projectto replace their existing kennel which is need of major renovation. The new Canine Development Center will create the ideal learning and living environment for their dogs, whichmeans they can better serve clients by providing the best trained and highest quality guide dogs possible. They have already raised over $9 million and are looking for support from Lions to help raisepart of the remaining funds. I hope that the Clubs in our District will get behind this very worthwhileproject.

Lion Bill Michael of the Berkeley Springs Lions Club is our District Leader Dog/Pilot Dog chairman and he is available to help with any of your questions on the guide dog programs. In the meantime, if I can help in anyway, please contact me at 304-623-3121 or by e-mail [email protected].

Kennel is ready to be demolished to make roomfor the new Canine Development Center.

2014-15 PRESIDENT’S THEME:STRENGTHEN THE PRIDE

International President Joe Preston is encouraging Lions around the world to “strengthen the pride” this year.

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH STARTS WITH ONE

Imagine if every one of our 1.35 million Lions asked one person to join a Lionsclub. Imagine the huge impact it would have on membership growth and theamount of service we can provide. It all starts by inviting one friend, familymember or neighbor to join your club. Give them the opportunity to be a Lionand give your club the opportunity to grow.

Strengthen the Pride through Service. Service is the foundation of our association, so let’s continue to buildon it as we approach our Centennial.

Strengthen the Pride by Strengthening Your Club. Make sure your club is on track for success and growingto meet the needs of your community.

Strengthen the Pride through Creativity. Use technology to enhance your communications and create newconnections with your community.

ENGAGING OUR YOUTH

A growing number of studies show that youth who engage in meaningful service projectsexperience a host of positive outcomes. Lions have an incredible opportunity to engageyouth by developing programs they can relate to and encouraging their input and participation in the planning process. Allowing youth to develop and lead a service project helps them learn valuable life skills while emphasizing the role of service.emphasizing the role of service.

LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION REPORT MD Chair Connie Dorscheid

I attended the LCIF meeting while at the International Convention in Toronto andamong other things, I learned that the % of clubs donating to the Foundation is amazinglylow. Hopefully, we can turn that around in WV this year and have every club donate something to our Foundation. WV has benefitted over and over again with funds fromLCIF and it makes sense to give back. There is always a need for donations. The recentearthquake in China is an example.

I also learned that only 4% of individual Lions contribute to LCIF. Money you personally contribute can go toward a Melvin Jones Fellow. Hopefully, this number in WV can increase this year.

The four LCIF coordinators in the districts are: L- PDG Harry Schramm, I- PDGGlenn Ryburn, O- PDG Jim McMillon, and N- PDG Dick Brockway. Any of them can answer any questions you may have about donations, LCIF programs, etc.

I will be attending the LCIF annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland on August23rd and will have a report for the next newsletter about it.

LION’S PEACE POSTER CONTESTWe would like to invite all the clubs in District 29I to sponsor The Lion’s Peace Poster Contest inyour local schools. This contest is sponsored each year to encourage children around the world to express their visions for peace. The theme for this year’s contest is “Peace, Love and Understanding”. Students who are 11, 12 or 13 on November 15 are eligible to compete in thiscontest. October 1 is the deadline for your club to order a kit from the Club Supplies Sales Department at International Headquarters. The club must then submit one winning entry to theDistrict Governor by November 15. If you have never done this contest the best place to start iswith the art teacher at your local school. This age group would encompass students in grades 5-8for the most part. If you have questions about the Peace Poster Contest you can find informationat http://www.lionsclub.org/EN/membercenter/planningprojects/youth/peace-poster/contest-deadlines.text.php or feel free to email me [email protected]

Mike FunkhouserLeo/Peace Poster Chairperson

Tongbram Mahesh Singh, a 12-year-old boy from Manipur,India, has been named the grandprize winner of the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Singh represented hisimage of peace through childrenof different countries coming together to paint the world inpeace. “Like me, other childrenalso want to play with theirfriends. We can play when weare free from violence and war,”said Singh. “Peace is [the] mostloving word to me,” said Singh.“Where there is peace, there isharmony. Where there is harmony, people will be happy.
