Be Solutions Focussed On Combining Service and Advocacy

“Advocacy is the expression of support for or

opposition to a cause, argument or proposal.

Advocacy may include influencing laws,

legislation or attitudes.”

When we combine Service and Advocacy, we have a very powerful tool

Page 18: District Conference 2011 Energy, Focus, Leadership Workshop Session

Be Solutions Focussed On Combining Service and Advocacy

• Service to women is not just raising money for

causes which meet our Objects, but also in

trying to improve the quality of their life by

advocating for better conditions for women.

• No action will be taken to address an issue of

concern to us unless authorities at the local,

state and federal levels are made aware there is

a problem which is worrying members of the

community.

Page 19: District Conference 2011 Energy, Focus, Leadership Workshop Session

Advocacy in Action

• ZI Advocacy Policy, Scorecard and Protocol for Advocacy and other LA&A documents must be used as the guides

• Club LA&A Committee should set up a folder of all these relevant documents and take to Club meetings as part of the ongoing education process of our members

Small Group Discussion

• Identify areas of concern in your community

and why they are of concern. Please outline

to your group your special area of concern.

• For each issue of concern:

– Use the documents on pp 163-172 to check that it is a SOW issue

– What level of government would you advocate to? Page 163
