My dear brothers and sisters in Ro-tary,

In the first message I wrote for this magazine, last July, I quoted Mohandas K. Gandhi, who said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” And in the months since, I have had incredible opportunities to travel the Rotary world and see how Rotarians every-where are bringing those words to life.

Creating positive change means, at its simplest, using our knowledge and resources to solve a problem. But when we are talking about solving humanitarian problems in a real and lasting way, knowledge and ideas and resources are not enough to ensure results. We have to remember something else that is no less important: sustainability.

A sustainable solution is one that will continue to work even after the Rotarians who proposed and facilitated it are gone. This means that even though the project might have come from Rotary originally, the community will take owner-ship of it. That, of course, means that when a part breaks on a water pump, there will be a process in place to repair it and to keep that pump functional – carried out by the community, and without further recourse to Rotary.

The first step toward sustainability is understanding the need – for example, the cooking fuel problem common in much of the developing world. In many regions, solar ovens are a wonderful solution: They are inexpensive; they rely on a source of energy that is free, nonpolluting, and inexhaustible; and they are simple to use and maintain.

But before we step into a community and attempt to solve its fuel problem with solar ovens, we have to fully un-derstand its situation – and look beyond the problem we see. Perhaps the local foods need to be cooked at a temperature higher than the solar oven can provide. Perhaps the area is windy, and the solar ovens would blow away. Perhaps it’s tra-ditional in that area to begin cooking before dawn, which, of course, you cannot do with a solar oven. These are issues you simply might not have thought of, but that could soon lead to the solar ovens being used to patch roofs or keep animal feed dry instead of for cooking.

Get ready For A Simpler, More Powerful Foundation With Future Vision

I am still occasionally asked why we decided to develop our Future Vision Plan. The question is, if the Foundation wasn’t broken, why fix it? The truth is that our Foundation, which has served Rotary and the world so well for over 90 years, was becoming dated. We were reacting to a changing world by adding yet another program or altering our rules, which made the Foundation increasingly complicated and expensive to administer. It was time to face the reality that we must change or see our impact on the world dimin-ish.

We asked over 10,000 Rotarians what changes we should make and then began to work on a Foundation that is simpler and easier to understand, that involves clubs and dis-tricts more in spending and stewardship, and that builds more sustainability into our activities.

Just as polio eradication has defined Rotary to the international community in recent years, in the future, our six areas of focus will define us. We will have lifted ourselves above the multitude of little projects that felt good but ad-dressed symptoms, not causes, and too often had a short-term impact. We have demonstrated through our polio efforts what we could do, and we will show the world that there are answers to other major issues, and that Rotary is prepared to lead the way. We can’t do it on our own, but we can and will make a difference.

The pilot districts are saying that Future Vision is ex-citing, leads to greater engagement and enthusiasm, is more efficient, is creating more interaction between clubs, is mak-ing Rotarians more aware of opportunities, has scaled up the size of projects, and is leading to greater giving to the Foun-dation. As chair of our Foundation, I can only agree!

The RI President’s Monthly Message If we are trying to bring about change, it’s not enough to say, “My way is the better way.” We have to be listening and watching, not just talking. We can only help others if we reach out with an open mind – and with the knowledge, the commitment, and the perseverance to deliv-er on what we promise.

Double recognition points will be automatically given to Rotarians and friends of Rotary who are enrolled in Rotary’s recurring giving program, Rotary Direct, and make one or more scheduled (monthly, quarterly, or an-nual) contributions between 1 April and 1 July 2012.

Rotary Direct enrollment is integrated with Rotary's secure online contribution system, which can accommodate contributions in any of 12 currencies. The recurring option is presented in Step 2 of the contribution process under the section titled "Frequency."

Individuals may also enroll using The Rotary Foundation Contribu-tion Form (PDF) and selecting "Make this a recurring contribution."

Making a monthly, quarterly, or annual gift is the most cost-effective and efficient way to support Rotary’s life-changing grants and ac-tivities. Questions may be directed to the Rotary International office serving your region or to Rotary’s Contact Center at [email protected] or +1-866-976-8279.

Supporting The Foundation

Most Rotarians have humanitarian goals they want to achieve. And they know that giving to the Foundation allows Rotarians to do extraordinary things worldwide that they normally couldn‘t do themselves. Those extraordinary things are what make our Rotary Foundation so critical in today‘s troubled world, and your support is what makes it possible to continue this vital work.

2004-05 RI President Glenn E. Estess Sr.

Foundation Thoughts

"Individual effort when well directed can accomplish much, but the greatest good must necessarily come from the combined efforts of many men. Individual effort may be turned to individual needs, but combined effort should be dedicated to the ser-vice of mankind. The power of combined effort knows no limita-tion. This superlative power no man may ap-propriate to his own use. This is the world's sub‑con-scious conclusion. We must clearly understand the jus-tice of it and measure up to its requirements.”

RYLA 2012

In 1929, The Rotary Foundation made its first donation: a US$500 gift to the Inter-national Society for Crippled Children, known today as Easter Seals.

Rotarian Edgar F. Allen founded the society in 1921 with help from the Rotary Club of Elyria, Ohio, USA, to aid children afflicted with crippling diseases. Rotary founder Paul Harris served as chair of the society.

Allen joined the Elyria club in 1918. In 1919, at a special club meeting, he present-ed his idea to provide specialized care to children with disabilities in their own communi-ties. Elyria Rotarians were moved by his presentation and took up his cause, founding what would become the International Society for Crippled Children.

Providing access to adequate medical care was an important cause to Allen. In 1907, one of Allen's sons died due to lack of medical care after a street car accident. Allen committed himself to building a hospital in Elyria and sold his successful business to devote his efforts to fundraising.

On 30 October 1908, the Elyria Memorial Hospital opened. Allen also helped to build the Gates Hospital, the first hospital in the United States devoted to the care of children with disabilities, which opened in 1915.

Daddy Allen, as he was called by the children who knew him, has been credited with coining the phrase “Keep on keeping on.”

Rotary clubs and Rotarians continue to work with local Easter Seals organizations as volunteers, event sponsors, and donors.

Historic Moments - Easter Seals

There is still room, but we would like all the names of students who will be going to RYLA by the end of this month.

All camp fees and completed forms are to be in to us by Monday, May 7. This will give us enough time to order the number of various items we need for the campers during the week.

We are holding steady at 107 campers so far. Thank you.

SARASOTA, Fla. March 5, 2012 – Midland area volunteer, Jalain Bagley has been recog-nized by President Obama and ShelterBox USA with a Presidential Volunteer Service Award for her efforts during 2011 to provide shelter, warmth and dignity for survivors of natural and other disasters world-wide.

In the aftermath of disasters such as the Japan earthquake and

tsunami last March, many watched on the television wishing they could make a difference. Bagley knew ShelterBox, an in-ternational disaster relief charity, would be on the scene deliv-ering it’s iconic green box containing a family tent, water puri-fication, a cook set and stove along with other lifesaving sup-plies. Through Bagley’s efforts of raising awareness and funds for ShelterBox, the organization was able to provide more than 17,600 ShelterBoxes to families throughout the world in 2011, including the tornadoes in the southern U.S., drought and famine in East Africa, widespread flooding in the Philip-pines and the subsequent earthquakes in Turkey.

“I am truly proud to honor our volunteers, who work hard year-round to support ShelterBox and our efforts to help families rebuild their lives across the globe,” said Emily Sper-ling, ShelterBox USA President. “It’s because of the continuous efforts of our volunteers such as Jalain that we are able to help so many vulnerable families each year.”

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is a special recognition presented on behalf of President Barack Obama. The award is part of a national recognition program created in 2003 through the President’s Council on Service and Civic Par-ticipation for individuals of all ages who contribute a signifi-cant amount of time to volunteer activities.

Canyon Rotary Club Invites Dr. Donald Lee To Be Guest Lecturer

Dr. Donald Lee, a retired United Nations economist and expert on global poverty issues, visited Rotary District 5730 in March as a representative of the Rotary-U.N. Out-reach Programme.

The Canyon Rotary Club invited Dr. Lee to be the guest lecturer at a public forum on March 6 at West Texas A&M University. He spoke about the U.N.’s Millennium Devel-opment Goals.

At the turn of the new millennium, the leaders of many nations came together to create a global partnership to “reduce extreme poverty” across the globe, and 2015 was set as the deadline. This effort established the following eight goals:

End Poverty and Hunger Universal Education Gender Equality Child Health Maternal Health Combat HIV/AIDS Environmental Sustainability Global Partnership

Dr. Lee explained that while some countries have made significant improvements on several of these goals, oth-ers have not. He also talked about the likelihood of solving poverty. It’s a man-made problem, he said, so it is possible for people to solve it. He also made a distinction about these goals. This is not an effort to alleviate poverty, he said. It is an effort to eradicate it.

He encouraged Rotarians and others in attendance to help by recog-nizing the In-ternational Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which hap-pens every year on Octo-ber 17.

Rotary International and ShelterBox, a grassroots dis-aster relief organization, signed a project partner agreement this month, allowing the two organizations to collaborate more closely to provide relief and temporary shelter to survi-vors of natural disasters.

“Project partner” is a special status RI gives to groups started or managed by Rotary clubs. The agreement will build on the strengths of both organizations in responding to disas-ters all over the world.

“Our Rotary friends have always been there ready to assist – from generous donations to direct operational support on the ground Rotary has always been part of our DNA,” said Tom Henderson, ShelterBox CEO. “I feel like we have 34,000 ShelterBox offices around the world working together to help those who have lost everything when they need us the most.”

Saving lives RI General Secretary John Hewko said the agreement will enable Rotary club members to have an immediate, life-saving impact in communities hit by natural disasters. “ShelterBox will be able to ensure that local Rotarians are pro-vided an opportunity to participate in the distribution of Shel-terBox containers,” he said.

Each ShelterBox typically provides a tent designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, stove, water purifica-tion kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities to help a family survive for six months or more after a disaster.

Henderson, a civil engineer and former search-and-rescue div-er for the British Royal Naval, founded ShelterBox in 2000. Its response teams of trained volunteers have brought lifesaving supplies to victims of more than 175 disasters in nearly 80 countries.

Rotary International Signs Project Partner Agreement With ShelterBox

Mutual goals “For more than 10 years, ShelterBox has giv-en light to over one hun-dred thousand families worldwide in their darkest hour,” said Hewko. “This project partner agreement represents our mutual goal of helping those in need. It gives RI a forward-facing approach to imme-diate disaster relief.”

Noted Henderson: “This partnership with Rotary In-ternational is a formal recognition of our good work over the past 12 years. It will help Rotarians get a better understanding of what we do. I hope Rotarians worldwide will see us as a coherent and able disaster relief organization.”

Earlier this month, a ShelterBox team distributed more than 550 tents to communities in Madagascar where powerful cyclones left more than 250,000 people homeless.

Club 2012-13 Fundraiser Goals

The 2012-13 Fund Development Club Goal Report Form is available to help club's plan their Foundation fundrais-ing efforts. Club goal-setting for fundraising is vital to the Eve-ry Rotarian, Every Year effort in building sustained support for The Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund, the primary source of funding for the Foundation's humanitarian and educational activities.

Goals are also encouraged for support to the Perma-nent Fund, and for individuals capable of making a major gift to the Foundation.

As funding is a critical concern in the effort to eradi-cate polio, Rotarians and friends are also asked to continue supporting the program until we reach out ultimate goal: the global certification of polio eradication.

Clubs are asked to submit their Foundation giving goals to their district governor-elect no later than 1 May. Dis-trict governors-elect may either submit the goals to The Rota-ry Foundation or enter them online through Member Access. Each club's Annual Fund goal and percentage of the goal achieved will appear on the district Monthly Contribution Re-port, available to club and district officers via Member Access.
