The use of drones to monitor the N2 is currently being investigated by the City’s Safety and Security Di- rectorate. This emerged at a public meeting in the Life Church Hall in Somerset West on Tuesday night. The meeting had been called to address the fears of Helderberg residents who com- mute on the N2 daily. Richard Bosman, the City’s Exec- utive Director of Safety and Securi- ty, said that the City has already conducted extensive tests on drones. It would first need to ensure all the correct rules and regulations are in place to prevent parties other than the City’s law enforcement staff from accessing the footage. While the use of drones is still un- der investigation, Bosman said it is a very real possibility. According to Bosman, the City is expecting that service delivery pro- tests on the N2 will increase in the lead up to the municipal elections in 2016. The directorate believes these protests will start at the begin- ning of 2015 and that they will follow one after another. He added that the Safety and Secu- rity Directorate has put several measures in place to ensure the N2 is constantly monitored. A network of City-owned CCTV cameras is monitored 24 hours a day and Bos- man said the City plans to extend the footprint of these cameras into the Helderberg next year. The directorate also recently in- stalled six infrared cameras in un- disclosed hot spots identified as the most volatile. “We’ve established a much closer working relationship with SAPS and the impact of this is enormous,” he added. In response to a concern raised by a resident that they never see law enforcement on the N2, Bosman said, “We cannot deny that we will never have enough staff”. He noted that incidents on the N2 have decreased significantly since September. Up until September, the director- ate had its hands full with consecu- tive protests that resulted in the clo- sure of the N2. Motorists’ lives were also in danger, he said. Fewer than a dozen criminal inci- dents have been reported in Novem- ber, he pointed out. Currently, the real danger motor- ists face is large concrete objects be- ing placed on the N2 in the dark of night, he said. He added that criminals are pla- cing these obstructions in the road to cause damage to vehicles so they are forced to stop. They are often then attacked. Major General Johan Brand, clus- ter commander of the Khayelitsha cluster, which the Helderberg falls under, concurs that the number of incidents on the N2 has significant- ly decreased since September. He believes this is because of the extensive planning done each week within the cluster to address crime trends along the N2. He attributes the decrease in criminal acts to the numerous suc- cessful convictions the cluster has had with regard to attacks near the Macassar bridge. Brand says there are contingency plans in place for protest action and they are more than adequately staffed and prepared to deal with such incidents. Still no site forGBayHighSchoolDALEEN FOUCHÉ

A site is yet to be confirmed for the longawaitedhighschoolplannedforGordon’sBay.

year that the WCED is planning several newschools for the area to relieve pressure oncurrent schools. But Subcouncil 8 expressed disappoint-

mentwith the little progressmadesince localcouncillors met with the WCED in Februarythis year. The WCED told Subcouncil 8 on Thursday

that the proposed high school for Gordon’sBay – which has been in the pipeline sincethe 2012-2013 financial year – still does nothave a dedicated site.Subsequent to themeeting, Paddy Attwell,

spokesperson for theWCED, told theDistrict-Mail that thedepartmenthas identifiedalter-native sites outside the urban edge where no

services are currently available. “Thismeans that we cannot develop these sites im-mediately.”He said that the Department of Transport

andPublicWorks iscurrentlyapplying to theCity for the use of these sites. He said oncea sitehasbeensecured, theplanningandcon-struction can take up to three years.During the presentation, the WCED said

that although it is responsible for identifyingthe need for schools, it is not responsible forbuilding new schools. This is the mandate ofthe Department of Transport and PublicWorks. But councillors of Subcouncil 8 insisted

that the WCED needs to put more pressureon the Department of Transport and PublicWorks to make progress with the newschools. “The progress of the schools is notanywhere near where we thought is was,”said Stuart Pringle, chairperson of Subcoun-cil 8.The WCED revealed during the presenta-

tion that 2 500 learners from the Metro EastEducation District, which includes parts ofKhayelitsha and Blue Downs, still have to beplaced in schools for next year.Other schools planned for the Helderberg

) A site for the Nomzamo SecondarySchool has been identified along the N2. Att-well says the Department of Transport andPublic Works is negotiating with the landowner for a piece of land measuring 11 hec-tares, wheremore than one school can be de-veloped.

) A potential site for a primary school inMacassarhasbeen identifiedbuta feasibilitystudy still has to be conducted.

) No site has been identified for a primaryschool in Sir Lowry’s Pass. Attwell says theWCED has asked the City of Cape Town toinclude a school site in any plans for futurehousing development in the village.

Concerns aboutmother tongue education in theHelderbergDALEEN FOUCHÉ

During the Western Cape Education De-partment’s presentation to Subcouncil 8on Thursday, several councillors raisedconcerns about mother tongue educationin the Helderberg.Councillor Nomawethu Ndzulwane

told theWCED that there are several Xho-sa-speaking children in Sir Lowry’s Pass

Primary, which is mainly an Afrikaansschool.Councillor Mbuyiselo Matha also asked

about the possibility of a Sotho curriculumbeing added to schools in Lwandle and Nom-zamo, as there aremanySotho-speaking chil-dren there.MelvynCaroline, director ofMet-ro East Education District, said it is the re-sponsibility of the parents to ensure thatwhen they enrol their children, they indicate

the correct language as their mothertongue. He said that once 20 or morelearners indicate that they are Xhosa-speakers, a Xhosa curriculum will be im-plemented by the department and Xhosateachers will be appointed. He said thatalthough Sotho is not one of the officiallanguagesintheWesternCape, thedepart-ment does have a Sotho curriculum thatit will provide to schools that require it.

Localspitch in to savesharks fromtidalpoolDALEEN FOUCHÉ

Local anglers went to work on Sundayevening to try and save several sharksin the tidal pool at Strand Beach.

During the course of Sunday evening, about 38 smooth-hound sharks were caughtin the tidal pool and released into the ocean.Don Marx, a local angler who was in-

volved in the rescue attempt, says thesmooth-hound shark comes into Strand’sshallow waters every year during springtide to spawn. He says it is the fourth year in which he

was involved in rescuing the sharks. He ex-plains that with high tide, the sharks enterthe tidal pool, but get trapped in the poolduring low tide. “And because it is springtide, low tide is lower than usual.”The City of Cape Town has subsequently

urged residents to leave the sharks alone.Councillor Johan van der Merwe, the

City’s Mayoral Committee Member for En-ergy, Environmental and Spatial Planning, says residents should be aware that catch-ing and handling the sharks with the inten-tion of releasing them can cause harm, inju-ry and stress to them and may reduce theirchance of survival.“Weaskthatresidentsplease justviewthe

animals and leave them alone.”ButMarx says the reason for catching and

releasing the sharks into the ocean is to try

prevent the “breeding stock” from beingcaught by commercial fishermen.“Themajority of the sharks aremales and

pregnant females.”He says that the sharks are easy targets

for commercial fishermen while they aretrapped in the tidal pool.Van der Merwe confirms that smooth-

hound sharks are allowed to be commercial-ly fished. “Hundreds of tonnes of these ani-mals are landed in False Bay by commercialfisherman annually.”Inaddition, recreational fishermanareal-

lowed to catch and keep one smooth houndper day.Marx says he found two dead sharks on

the beach on Monday morning. He says the stress of being chased and

caught is the most probable cause of death.Marx admits that catching the sharks

causes them stress and can lead to theirdeath, but says he believes that the sharksstill have a better chance of survival whenthey are caught and released in the oceanas opposed to being trapped in the tidal pool.IllonedeWitt, a localwhowason thescene

on Sunday evening, says the anglers useda net to corner the sharks, catch them andlift them over the tidal pool wall and intothe ocean. She says the anglersworkeduntil23:00 to catch and release the sharks.Van der Merwe says the handling of the

sharks fallswithintheregulationsofrecrea-tional fishing. Unless one has a recreational

permit, one is not allowedto catch a shark in any way(including with one’shands). “With regards toSunday evening, it is ourunderstanding that most ofthe sharks were released.”Strand Police detained a

man on Monday for catch-ing one of these sharkswithout the appropriate li-cence.Constable Mbulelo

Mafuna, spokesperson forthe Strand Police, says a 23-year-old man was fined forcontravening the MarineLiving Resources Act.The smooth-hound shark

can growup to 2,2 metres inlength and poses no risk topeople.

Hathersagegetsgo-aheadfor28houses tobebuiltDALEEN FOUCHÉ

A small portion of theHathersage Farm in SomersetWest will be developed, with 28residential units to be built ona two hectare site.

The City of Cape Town’s SpatialPlanning, Environment and LandUseManagementCommittee(SPE-LUM) approved the application forthe development in October.

This was followed by an objec-tion period for the applicant, which ended in November.

The applicant did not appeal andthe approval was finalised.

A separate, controversial appli-cation tobuildaschool, residentialunits and a lifestyle estate on Ha-thersage Farm was withdrawn inMarch this year after new floodlinesfortheLourensRiverwerees-tablished following the November2013 floods.

TheLourensRiver runs throughHathersage Farm.

The new flood lines indicatedthat the entire proposed develop-ment would fall within the 50-yearflood line.

Renier Kapp, project managerfor Guillaume Nel, who was han-dling the environmental applica-tions for the proposed Hathersagedevelopment, confirmed that theapplicationtodevelopaschool, res-idential units and a lifestyle estateremains withdrawn.

A portion of the site earmarked

for the approved residential deve-lopment also fell within the newflood lines.

The application, whichwas orig-inally for 33 residential units, wasadjusted to avoid the area withinthe flood line.

The approved application nowentails 28 residential units beingbuilt on theportionof the farmthatborders Gordon Road.

Oneof the reasons for the contro-versyaround theproposal thatwaswithdrawn is that it forms part ofthe Lourens River Protected Areaand is outside of the urban edge.

The approved application, how-ever, falls within the urban edgeand outside of the Lourens RiverProtected Area.

Concerns were raised about theimpact the development wouldhave on traffic along the alreadycongested Gordon Road.

A Traffic Impact Statement forthe application, however, conclu-ded that the proposed developmentwill not result in a significant in-crease in traffic.

The developers, Combined De-velopers (Pty) Ltd, could not bereached for comment.

Anationwidemedication shortagehasaffectedmanyHelderbergresi-dents who make use of the publichealth system.

On 12 November the Western CapeMEC for Health, Theuns Botha, an-nounced that the medication short-age, which he says is the NationalMinisterofHealth’s fault,wouldbeaf-fecting the Helderberg and surround-ing areas and that the shortage willcontinue for at least the next twomonths.

However, he did not indicate whichmedicines would be in short supply.

MarkvanderHeever, spokespersonfor the Western Cape Health Depart-ment(WCHD),saysthatinordertonotcause panic or confusion, the WCHD“will unfortunately not be in a posi-tion to indicate which medication isin short supply as this changes regu-larly”.

So far the DistrictMail has been in-formed by residents and readers of a

shortage of cortisone, blood pressuremedicationaswellas diabetes,choles-terol and thyroid medication.

Dr Johan Anderson, who practicesin Somerset West, says that all thesemedications are considered chronicmedication – medication that treatslong-term chronic diseases.

Gordon’s Bay resident Irene Botessays she and her husband have beenunable to get their cholesterol pills attheStrandClinic,whichtheyvisitreg-ularly.

Strand resident Hester van Wyksays that up until now, she has beenabletogetallhermedicationsfromtheStrand Clinic, except cortisone, also achronic medication.

Sheona van Tonder, who lives inGordon’s Bay, says that her motherhasbeenunable together thyroidandblood pressure medication from theGordon’s Bay clinic.

VanTondersaystheclinicinformedher that she could pick up her moth-er’smedicationinaboutaweek’s timeand when she returned, they still didnot have any stock available. Her fa-

ther, who alsomakesuse of the publichealthservicesatGordon’sBayclinic, has not been able to get his diabetesmedication and Van Tonder has be-come extremely concerned as her fa-ther suffers from heart failure.

“I’ve got a chronic medication pre-scription that I get every month andlately I can’t get the one specificmedi-cation. They gave me seven tabletsand said theywill try to getmore.Andthen they just have more excuses, which means at the end I don’t get thefull dosage,” says a Strand residentwho wishes to remain anonymous.

Gordon’s Bay and Strand Clinicswere unable to comment.

“We have recommended that pa-tientswill be informed, where it is rel-evant, by their doctor or pharmacistthat a drug is temporarily unavaila-ble, what alternatives are availableand if not, how their particular situa-tion will be managed,” says Van derHeever.

“This situation is foreseen to con-tinueuntil earlynextyearwhenstockavailabilityshould improve,”hesays.

Familyvaluesneed to returntohomes

The 16 Days of Activism campaignforNoViolenceAgainstWomenandChildren started on Tuesday 25 No-vember.Although this is the 15th year in

which South Africa is participatingin this international campaign, there have been scant signs that ithas had any lasting effect on stop-ping or even decreasing the numberof incidentsofgenderviolenceinourcountry. We constantly hear, see or read

about women (of all ages) and chil-dren (sometimes only months old)being abused and raped. What is most disturbing about

many of these cases is that they arefrequently perpetrated by the maleheads of families against thewomenand minors in their care. These men lack moral values and

have lost all respect, not only forthose they’re supposed to be caringfor, but also for themselves. The breakdown in family struc-

tures and lack ofmoral values needsurgent attention and unless some-thing is done to address this prob-lem, the 16-day campaign will, onceagain, prove to be fruitless.Good family values need to be

taught and practiced from a youngage to ensure healthy, supportivefamilies in the years to come.

Schools in limbo: This week’s cartoon is about the story on page four that outlines the progress of the various new schools plannedfor the Helderberg. Subcouncil 8 expressed its dismay at the apparently slow progress being made by the Western Cape Education Department after the department made a presentation to the subcouncil last week.

Gordon’s Bay is turning into a firstclass holiday destination and accord-ing to Jeanette Loring, an executivecommitteememberoftheGordon’sBayBusiness Forum, active marketing isthe key to its success.

Loring says that Gordon’s Bay has un-dergone a silent transformation over thepast three years and is “slowly but surely”becoming a more tourist-friendly and aes-thetic town. She says most people wouldnot have noticed, because the transforma-tion has been slow and subtle.

AccordingtoLoring, thetransformationis due to individual businesses making an-nual improvements to their buildings.

Accommodation establishments, busi-nesses, restaurants and shops are makingimprovements that enhance the aestheticvalue of the town by adding, for example, awnings and decks to their buildings.

As far as Loring is concerned, this is evi-dence of economic activity in Gordon’sBay.

Loring says she realised that Gordon’sBay needs to be marketed in a pro-activemanner when she took part in the annualnational Tourism Indaba in 2011. Klein-mond was very well represented, but Gor-

don’s Bay did not feature anywhere, shesays.

Loring says the tourism body responsi-ble for marketing Cape Town destinations,Cape Town Tourism, does what it can tomarket Cape Town destinations, but be-cause there is such a wide variety of townsand destinations, it cannot always providethe in depth marketing needed. “We alsowanted a piece of the tourism pie.”

The marketing of Gordon’s Bay is nowpart of the Gordon’s Bay Business Forummandate. Initiatives from the Gordon’sBay Business Forum include the WinterWonderland festival. Loring is also cur-rently making postcards of the pictur-esque town.

Breakthrough inarthritis remediesThere is new hope formore than threemil-lion osteoarthritis and joint pain sufferersin South Africa.

Osteoarthritis is the world’s most prevalentjoint disease.

This new hope is due to a scientific break-throughcalledFlexiseqgel,whichenablesdam-aged joints to be adequately lubricated giving

pain relief and restoring joint mobility. The gel is applied twice daily and delivers

noticeable pain relief within a few days.Flexiseq’s proven efficacy comes with sig-

nificant advantages over existing drug treat-ments, as the product has no contra-indica-tions,containsnodrugssocannotcausedrug-to-drug interactions and with over 7 milliondoses administered since launch, there have

been no reported systemic side effects. Currentdrug treatments can cause serious side effectssuch as gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke.

Dr Cathy Spargo, a rheumatologist and chair-person of the South African Rheumatism Arthri-tis Association explains: “We are excited to havea new option to offer patients with chronic jointpain, such as osteoarthritis of the knee, to help

manage their pain. Flexiseq is a natural lubri-cant, and not a drug in its own right, which canbe applied directly to joints and which is safeto use without interactions with other drugs,or significant side effects.”

Chocolate not to blame for acneAlthough there is still a lotof controversy, it is nowgenerally believed that dietplays a much smaller partin the aggravation of acnethan previously believed.

Hormonal changes, in-cluding the changes that oc-cur at the onset of puberty, are apparently mostly re-sponsible.

The hormone testostero-ne enlarges and influences the sebaceousgland in such a way that the skin flares updue to an overproduction of oil and the accu-mulation of bacteria. This reaction is exacer-bated by stress, stages of the menstrual cycleand the composition of the affected tissuesin the acne sufferer.

There is no evidence whatsoever that choc-olate causes acne. Studies conducted by re-searchers from the University of Pennsylva-

nia and the American NavalAcademy confirmed this byshowing that the ingestionof large amounts of choco-late did not have an effect onacne.

Certainstudieshave,how-ever, linked substances inchocolate to rosacea, anadult type acne. But the ex-act causes of this skin prob-lem remain uncertain.

A recent study, conducted by the ColoradoState University, indicated that refined car-bohydrates and highly processed foods causethe body to produce high levels of insulin, which in turn leads to an excess of the malehormones responsible for acne in the body.

Diet changes alone are not a solution foracne, but consuming a variety of foods inmoderate amounts is advisable.

Research has proven thatchocolate is not to blame foracne as many diet myths say.

Breast cancer treatment includes cosmeticsBreast conserving therapy has been iden-tified as an important intervention forwomen treated for breast cancer – and isbeing implemented at a growing numberof comprehensive breast centres.

In large trialsperformed in the ’70sand ’80s,breast conserving therapy was shown to beequally effective in the treatment of earlybreast cancer, as was a mastectomy.Increasingly, additional treatments suchas

chemotherapy and hormonal therapy pro-longedthepatient’ssurvival.Currently,of100patientswith early stage breast cancer, about80 are still alive and well after 20 years.AccordingtoDrRikaPienaar, anoncologist

from Cape Town, the survival of the patientis crucial. However, thecosmeticoutcomeaft-er the cancer treatment is an aspect that can-not be ignored.Professor Justus Apffelstaedt from Stellen-

bosch University (SU) says initial trials ofbreast conservation addressed mainly safetyissues and cosmetic outcome was only a sec-

ondary consideration. He says mastectomieswere performed to alleviate problems associ-ated with late radiation changes.“The surgical outcome initially was often

acceptable. However, the necessary additionof radiotherapy in breast conservation led toprogressive scarring. After a few years thescarring made the cosmetic outcome ratherpoor,” says Professor Frank Graewe, Head ofthe Division of Plastic Surgery at the US.There have been two significant develop-

ments that have improved the cosmetic out-come remarkably.Progress in radiation planning and new

technology in radiation delivery cause muchless scarring than in the past, and new surgi-cal techniques have been developed. The aims of this integration are the uncom-

promisedsafety incancertreatment,whilees-tablishing an aesthetically pleasing breastshape that can withstand radiotherapy withlittle long-term changes. This is most readilyachievedbya teamapproach including anon-cologic surgeon, oncologist and a plastic sur-geon. This approach, which combines cancersurgery and plastic surgery in the same ses-sion, is named “oncoplastic” breast surgery.Thirty years ago, breast cancer surgery wasstraightforward - it meant having amastecto-my.Nowadays, lumpectomies, tumour exci-

sions, segmentectomies, quadrantectomies, skin sparing mastectomies, mastectomiesand more, belong to the armamentarium ofthe oncologic surgeon. Likewise, the plasticsurgeon has to have in his arsenal of proce-dures, ranging from local rearrangement ofthebreast glandafter an excisionof a tumour,a variety of breast reduction techniques intowhich the tumour excisions are integrated, and the reconstructionof thepatients own tis-sue or new prostheses.Professor Graewe says the plastic surgeon

should be familiar with all of the differenttechniques inorder toprovideanoptimal cos-metic outcome.“Formeastheseniormemberandconvener

of such a team, it has been an eye-opener tosee the iteration taking place between the ra-diation oncologist and the plastic surgeon,”says Professor Apffelstaedt.Dr Pienaar concurs and says the combined

clinics and the new tools plastic surgeonshave developed, provide the patientwith a re-formedbreast shapewith excellent blood sup-ply in which radiation is much better tolerat-ed.The team of surgeons should all have a ma-

jor interest in breast cancer management inorder to understand the complexities in-volved. A good measure of this is the numberof breast cancers they manage annually.More than 100 cases of breast cancer is a

good indication, that the team has the re-quiredvolumetoconstantlyachievegoodout-comes. - Source: Women 24

Someof the countlesshealingpropertiesofhoneyThe wonderful healing qualities of honeyhave been known since ancient times.

Honey was the most used medicine in an-cientEgypt– infact, itwasdeemedsopreciousthat it was used as a form of currency. Honeycan improve your health in countless ways.Sore throats and coughsOne of the best known health benefits of

honey is its ability to soothe sore throats andkill the bacteria that causes infections. It hasstrong antibacterial properties and providestemporary pain relief. Combine a spoonful ofhoney with some freshly-squeezed lemonjuice and drink at regular intervals. You canalso mix the honey with lemon juice and apinch of salt and gargle. Honey also relievesmild coughing, especially night-time cough-ing in young children. It is a great immune-

system booster and helps to ward off colds.Wounds, cuts and burnsHoney is an excellent first aid remedy as

it isanaturalantiseptic. It inhibits thegrowthof bacteria and therefore helps keep woundsclean and free from infection. After gently cleaning thewoundwithwarm

water and mild soap, apply a layer of honeyon a dressing before covering the wound. Anextra dressing or bandage will contain anyleaking honey. Change every 24 hours.Honey is also effective for cuts and burns

as it reduces pain and swelling, and promoteshealing. Simply dab somehoney on the affect-ed area.Hay feverEating honey that is local to your area can

help boost your immune system and reduceyour hay fever symptoms.

The localhoneycontainsvery tinyamountsof the pollen found in your area. These tinyamounts of pollen are not enough to triggerthe allergic reactionwhenyou ingest thehon-ey, but they do help your body to build a toler-ance to the pollen.Digestive healthHoney has a mild laxative effect which can

help combat constipation and bloating. It is

also rich in friendly bacteria which act as aprobiotic and keep the digestive and immunesystem healthy. For a home-made digestionaid, try tea with honey and lemon.Mosquito bitesHoney can help reduce the itch and irrita-

tion of mosquito bites. Dab a little raw honeyrightonthebite.Honey’santi-microbialprop-erties will also help prevent infection.

Last stretch for SomersetWest’s SRANo objections were raised against the pro-posed Special Ratings Area (SRA) for theSomerset West Central Business District(CBD).MagelGrové, amember of the SRAsteer-

ing committee, says the closing date for ob-jections against theSRAwas 10November,adding that no complaints were receivedbefore the closing date.Grové says all that remains to be done

is to wait until a decision is made by theCity of Cape Town. She says a decision may be forthcoming

in January or February. The SRA entails that business property

owners in the demarcated Somerset WestCBD pay additional rates.

The additional rates are then managedby a company and will go towards toppingup services such as safety, cleaning andbeautification.“We are full of hope that our application

will be successful as we have not had anyobjections.”Grové says she is very excited about this

year’s Festival of Lights, which kicks offon 3 December, and says she hopes that lo-cals will come out in numbers to supportthis event.“We invite shop owners to decorate their

shops and to keep the sidewalks as cleanas possible so that the public will walkaway with a positive impression of theCBD.”

Hungrymouseorgreedyman? To catch a mouse you need a mousetrap. The most essential part of themouse trap is the cheese, which isused to lure the unsuspecting littlefellow to his demise.

In financial services thereare similar traps, which alsomake use of “cheese” to lureunsuspecting consumers totheir financial demise. Somehow I feel sorrier for themice, but that is another top-ic on its own. This week lets look at two

financial traps set by thebanks and many retailers.Trap one, the credit card

trap:This is a favourite trap

used by all the banks, manyretailers and now even air-lines.Theunsuspecting consumer is enticed

into applying for a credit card by the“cheese”, which comes in many differ-ent “tasty flavours” a few of which I willlist:

. points exchanged for consumergoods;

. miles exchange for travel tickets;

. cash refunds and discounted pur-chases;

. free benefits like travel insurance;

. status appeal (gold, platinum, etc);

. free credit for up to 60 days; and

. monthly prize draws. The death blow is delivered just a

quickly and brutally as the mouse trap.Consumers are encouraged to spend us-ing their credit cards as much as possi-ble with only a minimum payment dueat month end.Unbeknown to the unsuspecting con-

sumer should he elect to pay only theminimumamount he is charged intereston full amount dueat exorbitant interestrates.

Do you remember the days when thewinning sportsman received an over-sized cheque?I notice this has been replaced by an

oversized credit card.Trap two, the debt con-

solidation trap:Many astute consumers

avoid the credit card trap on-ly to be caught by trap two.The “cheese” is usually acombination of privatebanking facilities and soundadvice of consolidating debtat a lower interest rate usu-ally equivalent to the bondrate. The death blow is skillful-

ly hidden in the repaymentstructure. The unsuspecting con-

sumer’s loan repaymentterm is now linked to his

bond term. The longer the term of a loanthe lower the monthly payment, whichis surely an added benefit? Wrong!By extending the repayment term you

may be able to afford a little more, butyou end up paying much more interest! In a variation of trap two, the banks

are now offering home-buyers 30-yearbonds vs the traditional 20-year bond. This lowers repayments thus making

the purchase of a homemore affordable, but results in the consumer payingmuch more interest over the term of thebond. Are you a Man or a MouseI think I would prefer to be a hungry

mouse rather than a greedy consumer;not that it reallymatters as bothwill endup getting the chop!

staff to demonstrate kindness, courtesy, and respect toward the school

and fellow students, parents, teachers and staff. The goal of all

Montessori education is to establish safe, warm, caring environments

The thenDistrict Mail put togeth-er a committee called the “District

This committee often had an en-tire page dedicated to the specialdeals and prices it secured for read-ers.

The aim of the demonstrationswas to show the whole family howto use a television.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF: The Helderberg Basin is notoriousfor its flooding during the winter season and in the last twomonths of the year, almost every year. Apparently, the phenomenon of neighbourhoods and central town areas being submergedin water is nothing new. The top photograph was taken in theearly 1940s of cars attempting to wade their way through deepwater to reach their destinations. Last year in November theHelderberg was hit with another bout of flooding, pictured in thesecond photograph, that had the area looking much like it didmore than 70 years ago.

Maintain your pool without breaking a sweatPool cleanerApool cleaner is essential for outdoor pools.

It’s amazing how much debris lands in a poolin a day. A pool cleaner won’t keep your poolperfectly clean, but having one (even in a poolsurrounded byheavyvegetation)means you’llonly need to spend a few minutes tidying upbefore taking the plunge on the weekend. Most pool cleaners have only one moving

part. These are generally replaced when theywearoutalthoughthevariousskirts, hosesandother components dowear out andbreakdownin the sun and chemicals, and will need to bereplacedregularly–especially inabrasivepeb-ble-finished pools.Automatic chlorinatorsLike pool cleaners, these save you time

through the week, but more importantly, helpkeep thewater in clean, healthy condition. Forsmall chlorinated-pools you can use a floatingchlorine dispenser to keep a constant level ofstabilised chlorine in thewater. These are ide-al if you’re unable to check the pool daily.Pool chemicalsAs with most things, you get what you pay

for with pool chemicals. The higher-qualityones are purer, more concentrated and moreeffective. Keep that pool balanced and youwon’t have to use too much of any chemical- they canbe expensive!Keep themsomewhereout of the sunlight and where the kids can’tgain access to them.Don’t keep empty contain-ers and nevermix chemicals unless you’re fol-lowing the manufacturer’s instructions.Article courtesy of www.home-dzine.co.za

BroomsThe broom is a vital tool for pool cleaning,

especially forpoolswitharoughinterior fin-ish such as pebbles. The bristles dislodge al-gae from the tiniest of crevices, and if youbrush often, algae won’t have time to discol-our the finishpermanently.Be careful ifyouhaveavinyl linerpool.Chooseabroomheadwith no sharp edges and long bristles thatcan reach into corners without the broomhead making contact with the liner.Leaf scoopsLook for a scoop that will effectively pick

up leaves, sticks and other objects from thebottomof the pool. A scoopneeds a thin edgeto do that, and a large leaf bag to accommo-date large pieces of debris such as fernleaves, sticks, and even small pool toys.Scoopscanbesubjectedtosignificantstrain,so chose one that’s strongly built yet light-weight.

Many anglers believe that author-ities should investigate the amountof contaminated harders trekked atMacassar and Strandfontein beach-es where the sewerage effluenceruns into the shallows. They believe these toxic harders

could possibly be why locals sufferfrom diarrhoea caused by the e.colithe harders constantly feed on.There have been a number of pho-

tographs posted on the internet andfacebook of tons of dead musselsthat have washed up on the stretch-es of beaches around PlettenbergBay and around the Beacon Isle Ho-

tel. These black mussel that havewashed onto the beaches could be asa result of a form of a red tide whichcauses toxins in the sea and whichcontaminates and kills themussels.Remember that anymussel found

open should not be eaten. When cooked the mussel should

open by itself, if it does not it shouldnot be eaten. There are 15 species of organisms

creating a red tide that destroysma-rine life.Only twoare toxic, theyareGonyaulax Catenella and Gonyau-lax Grindleyi. They complete the first cycle in

the poison chain when they are in-gested by shell fish and stored intheir liver.I’ve been a resident of Strand for

the past 84 years and I firmly objectto any proposals of fish hawkers be-ingrelocated fromthesmall slipwayin the Strand. The Strand was origi-nally formed around fish tradingand this is confirmedby rate-payingboatmen and fish mongers (Langa-ne) andany ideas tomove themfromhere would not be welcome.Forall your reel repairs andservi-

Playermanagement remains vitalCricket is a psychological game. Sure youhaveto be able to bat, bowl and field, but to do soconsistentlyunderpressure takesgreatpowersofconcentrationandimmensementalstrength.

Sachin Tendulkarmade his test debut for In-dia at theageof 16, butSachinwasoneof akindandmanaged properly. If a player is not physi-callyandemotionallyreadythere’sachancetheplayer’s confidence gets such aknock that theydeteriorate instead of going forward.

One such case was Justin Ontong of the Co-bras who was selected for the Proteas tour toAustralia in2002whenhewasonly21.Hemadehis test debut but by his own account was notready to face the likes of Warne, McGrath andLee.Hewent out cheaply andwas in tears afterthe game again saying he was not ready. Thishad a huge impact on his career and we haveonly seen him come to the fore in recent years.

We see similar instances at primary schoolwherechildrenmake the jumpfromu. 9 tou. 11from a soft ball to a hard ball.

This can also happen at high school wherea gifted cricketer is thrust into the team while

only in Grade 8 or 9.The same can be said for wanting to blood

youngstersat club level. It’sbetter tostart themoff in the lower sides to get themused to cricketatseniorlevelbeforedraftingthemintothefirstteam.

The important thing is to manage playersproperly, make sure they are mentally andphysically ready to cope with the next step.

It’s also important to back these players andgive them time to settle down.

Jacques Kallis is a case in point, he was 20years old when he made his test debut and gotone run inhis first innings and struggled inhisfirst few tests, but the selectors showed faith inhim and backed him, and therest is history.

He is without a doubt thegreatest cricketerSouthAfricahas ever produced.

SWCC enforced the follow-on as Sher-wood Manenberg were still trailing theSWCC first innings by 108 runs.

SWCC again made early in-roads withopening bowler, Dean Vincent taking 3 for3 in his opening 9-over spell.

Manenberg’s fifth-wicket partnership

put up some resistance, taking their scoreto 60/4 before man-of-the-match StevenSouthey entered the fray with his leg-spin.

He absolutely bamboozled the oppositiontaking 4 wickets in 4 balls to end the daywith exceptional figures of 2-5-5.
