1.INTRODUCTION

District Survey Report of Jashpur district is prepared keeping in mind that it

will help in identification of areas of aggradations and deposition where mining

can be allowed and identification of areas of erosion and proximity to

infrastructural structures and installations where mining should be prohibited and

calculation of annual rate of replenishment and allowing time for replenishment

after mining in that area. This District Survey Report shall form the basis for

application for environmental clearance, preparation of reports and appraisal of

projects.

Jashpur District lies in the north-eastern corner of the state of Chhattisgarh

in India adjoining the border of Jharkhand and Odisha. The north-south length of

this district is about 150 km, and its east-west breadth is about 85 km. Its total area

2.OVERVIEW OF MINING ACTIVITY IN THE DISTRICT:

Mining activity will bring economical benefits to the state by way of

Royalty for mineral. Achieving a huge infrastructure as being envisaged by

Government of India particularly in housing sector requires basic building

materials like Gitti, Sand, Bricks etc. The mining activities are backbone of all

construction and infrastructure projects as the raw material for construction is

available from such mining. There is no industry in the area. Bricks, Gittis and

sand have a high demand at the local market for real estate industry. The mining in

this district will provide employment to nearby villagers. This employment

opportunity will help in raising the standard of living of the people in the area.

Socio-economic condition of area generally improve as mining activities create

additional employment opportunity for local habitant, social – economic status of

local people also improves as a result of social welfare activities. Significant

contribution will be made towards education medical facilities and cultural aspects

from the mining industry. Drinking water facilities will be provided to villagers,

plantation will improve environmental condition of the area. Thus mining activity

will bring about socio-economic improvement of the area and will prove beneficial

to the area.

Bauxite is present in kantabel, datunpani, Pandrapat, Sardhapat etc

villages in Jashpur district as major minerals. Diamonds and Golds are also present

in Jashpur district as major minerals and as minor mineral ultrapure quartz deposits

and Laterite deposits are present in this district and there are several mines are

present for minor minerals like sand, Brick earth, Stone Mine for Making Gitti etc.

In this distric 57 quarry leases of ordinary sandstone and 42 quarry leases of Soil

(for brick making) are sanctioned to different people of the district. Out of 57

quarry leases of Ordinary Sandstone 20 quarries are in working condition,

similarly out of 42 quarry leases of Soil (for brick making) only 26 quarries are in

working condition. 11 quarries of sand are sanctioned to different Gram panchayat,

out of which 10 quarries are in working condition.

6. PROCESS OF DEPOSITION OF SEDIMENTS IN THE RIVERS

OF THE DISTRICT

Deposition is the geological process in which sediments, soil and rocks

are transported and then deposited at favourable places. Wind, Glacier and

water, as well as sediment flowing via gravity, transport previously eroded

sediment, which, at the loss of enough kinetic energy of the weathering agent, is

deposited, building up layers of sediment.

Some of the important factors which are responsible for the process of

sedimentation in a river basin are :-

a) The stage of river(the infant, youth, mature or old stage )

b) Lithology and structures of the upstream region or provenance from

where sediments eroded/migrated/travelled.

c) Geomorphology and gradient of provenance.

d) Anthropogenic activities such as mining, industrialization and mega

engineering projects such as Dam also affects the process of

sedimentation.

e) The thickness of the sequence is determined by the depth of the stream

channel during flood stage and is related to the size of river itself.

The main rivers present in Jashpur district are Ib and Maini River. Both the the

rivers carry sufficient sediments (sands) which can be mined in dry seasons.

Other than that some important rivers are Dokri, lawa and Khudung Nadi.

7.GENERAL PROFILE OF THE DISTRICT

Jashpur District lies in the north-eastern corner of the state

of Chhattisgarh in India adjoining the border of Jharkhand and Odisha. The

north-south length of this district is about 150 km, and its east-west breadth is

11. GEOLOGY AND MINERAL WEALTH OF THE DISTRICT

Geologically in Jashpur district the rock formations of Archean to

Proterozoic age occupy the major part of the area.lameta group of rocks and

Deccan Traps occur in the Northern parts. Chhota Nagpur Gneissic Complex of

Archean to Proterozoic (undifferentiated ) age comprises of biotite

gneiss/biotite granite, granodiorite, tonalite, muscovite granite/ gneiss, gneissic

granite and granite gneiss with enclaves of meta-sediments, metabasic and

ultrabasic rocks. The rock assemblage is indicative of large scale remobilisation

and wide spread granitisation. Younger granite plutons, basic dykes, pegmatite

and quartz veins are found sa intursives within the metamorphites.

Lameta group of rocks of cretaceous age areexposed in the northern parts

of the district, just below the Deccan Trap basalt. They comprise polymitic

conglomerate and gritty sandstone with clasts of chert and calcareous mud

stone.

Non porphyritic to porphyritic basalt of tholetic composition represent the

Deccan Traps of cretaceous to Palaeogene age. During the canozoic era, the

area had undergone prolonged laterisation resulting in the formation of

extensive laterite capping both over the older metamorphites and Deccen Traps

in the northern part of the district. Weathering of laterite capping in the highland

plateau in the northwestern part of the district.

Bauxite, beryl, gold, mica, and tungsten are the economic mineral

deposite/ occurrences reported in the district. Small pockets of bauxite deposites

within laterite have been explored from Kadampat, Jatripat, Dhanapat-

Datunpani, Kharipat, Khuria, Marol and Pandrapat in the Pandrapat plateau

area. Gold mineralisation is reported from quartzite, cherty quartzite and quartz

veins from Pharsabahar, Bantoli, Dharsasand, Turi Alga, Bangaon, Kansabel-

pandripani-Tapkara. Occurences of residual gold are reported from Ib river.

Occurences of beryl are reported from Kunkuri, Ginabahar, Belghurti, and

Kainkacchar. Scheelite(Tungsten) occurring in the form of disseminations,

minor stringers and ptches within quartz-tourmaline veins and leucogranite is

reported from Sikrima, Sajbahar, Golidih, Samdama, Junwani, Bansajhat,

Manjharpara and Pegalmunda.
