All instructions are based on using 44/45 wide 100% cotton quilt-weight fabrics and the specific supplies listed that I prefer to use. Heavy/decorator weight fabrics, light weight satins & other synthetic materials, metal zippers, non-fusible interfacing, etc. can all be used at your own discretion. Some alterations to instructions may be necessary. I recommend using the suggested supplies for your first try until you are comfortable with the techniques. Please read supply list and all instructions carefully before making your wallet. Supplies: 2 Fat Quarters - Main & Accent- Scraps will work (*See below for sizes*) 1/4 yard (or Scraps) Pellon Decor Bond 44”W fusible interfacing 1 Metal Wallet Frame 7 ½” or 8” & Extra Small Phillips Head Screwdriver (1) 7” All Purpose polyester zipper -Longer is ok too - they can be cut! Matching thread All usual sewing/quilting supplies including pins, rotary cutter, ruler, mat, pencil, seam ripper, etc… **PLEASE NOTE: If You are using a 7 ½” frame cut all

Pieces below 8” W NOT 8 ½”W! From Fabric 1 (Main) cut: Body: (1) 8 ½” W x 9” L Rectangle Zipper Pocket: (2) 8 ½” W x 4” L Rectangles Open Pocket: (2) 8 ½” W x 3 ¾” L Rectangles Card Pocket #2: (1) 8 ½” W x 4” L Rectangle

From Fabric 2 (Accent) cut: Body: (1) 8 ½” W x 9” L Rectangle Card Pockets # 1 & 3: (2) 8 ½” W x 4” L Rectangles

From the interfacing cut: Body: (2) 8 ½” W x 9” L Rectangles Zipper Pocket: (1) 8 ½” W x 4”L Rectangle Open Pocket: (1) 8 ½” W x 3 ¾” L Rectangle

Finished size (Closed): 8”W x 4-1/2”L (7 ½”W with smaller frame)

Finished size (Open): 8”W x 9”L (7 ½”W with smaller frame)

All seam allowances are ¼” unless otherwise noted. It’s always a good idea to backstitch to secure stitches. I use an 80/12 universal needle and cotton thread. Topstitching on pockets is ¼” from edge. If you don’t have a zipper foot you can use any foot that will allow you to stitch close to the edge of the zipper. Color Tip: I used the Main fabric for most of the pieces of this wallet and the Accent color in only a few places. There’s no reason why you couldn’t mix it up. Using scraps will give it a different look too (just like the purple, green & orange cover photo). Audition various fabrics to make this wallet your own! The sky’s the limit!

Let’s begin! Step 1: Iron fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the 2 body pieces as well as one piece of the zipper pocket fabric and one piece of the open pocket fabric & set aside. Tip: I always iron from the fabric side not from the interfacing side. This prevents wrinkles and accidentally fusing the interfacing to your iron.

Step 2: Next we will prepare the card pockets. Begin by folding each one in half the long way, wrong sides together, and press. Topstitch each pocket ¼” from the folded edge (Diagram 1). Tip: Using a contrasting thread can add a little unexpected twist and punch of color – For example: use red thread on a black & white print.

Diagram 1

Step 3: Before we can add the card pockets we’ll need to prepare the open pocket. Begin by placing both 8 ½” x 3 ¾” pieces of fabric for the open pocket right sides together and stitch using a ¼” seam. Open and press. Add topstitching ¼” from folded edge (Diagram 2). Tip: When sewing together 2 pieces of fabric where only one has interfacing, place the fabric with the interfacing on the top. This will eliminate stretching the piece that doesn’t have interfacing.

Step 4: Now that the open pocket is prepared we will add the card pockets one at a time. The piece of fabric that has the interfacing should be facing up. Begin by placing card pocket #1 on top and pin in place ½” down from the folded edge. Stitch ¼” from the raw edges on the card pocket (Diagram 3).

Step 5: Place card pocket #2 on top next, ½” down from card pocket #1 and stitch in place (Diagram 4). For card pocket #3, place on top aligning the raw edges of the card pocket and the open pocket. Pin in place and stitch 1/8” around all 3 raw edges to secure (Diagram 5).

Step 6: STOP!! If you are using a 7 ½” frame you will only have ONE centered seam not two!! In order to keep all your cards in place we will need to add stitching in the center. For 8” frames: Measure and mark 4” in from each side. I prefer using something light like a pencil or chalk to make my marks. Stitch on both marks and be sure to back stitch (Diagram 6). Tip: Because these pockets will be used so much I always like to stitch them twice for extra security - Starting at the bottom, stitch up, pivot and stitch back down. For 7 ½” frames you will only have ONE stitching line down the center NOT 2! When finished, set aside - We will use this piece again later Step 7: Next we will prepare the zipper pocket using the 8 ½” x 4” zipper fabric that has the interfacing and work on the back. Measure down 1” from the top and 1” in from each side and draw a line that is 6” to 6 ½” W. Measure ¼” down from this line and make another mark, then measure ¼” from that line and mark again. You should now have a centered rectangle that is 6” to 6 ½” wide and ½” high with a line in the middle (Diagram 7).

Step 8: Using your rotary cutter or scissors, cut on the center line and also cut a “V” at each end (Diagram 8). Step 9: Fold back the fabric to create a rectangular opening and press well. Tip: The better it’s pressed the better your zipper will look in the end. Add some ¼” fusible tape here as well to help flatten the opening. Using ¼” wide fusible hem tape, place strips on the back around the opening you just pressed. This will hold your zipper while you sew instead of pins which can be very tricky. Place your zipper facing up in the opening and press so the fusible tape adheres to the zipper. Using your zipper foot, topstitch around the zipper on the front about 1/8” to 1/16” from edge (Diagram 9).

Step 10: Place the other piece of zipper pocket fabric (without interfacing) on top, right sides together and stitch using a ¼” seam. Open and press. Add topstitching ¼” from folded edge (Diagram 10).

Step 11: Now it’s time to assemble the wallet. Using the body piece from Fabric 2 (Accent) place the zipper pocket piece and card pocket piece on top and pin. Align the raw edges making sure that the folded/finished edges of the pockets are facing inwards. Stitch 1/8” from all edges to hold pockets in place (Diagram 11).

Step 12: Next, place the body piece from Fabric #1 (Main) on top, right sides together and pin. Stitch the 2 long sides two times each (for stability) using a ¼” seam allowance (Diagram 12). It is helpful to trim your seams down to 1/8” next. This will help when turning the wallet rights sides out and also when adding the frame. Fold the wallet right sides out & press well. Stitch the raw edges together 1/8” from the edge to keep everything neat and easier to work with when applying the frame (Diagram 13).

Step 13: We’re ready to add the frame to the wallet! There are 2 pieces to the frame – a male half & a female half. The male half has the clasp part of the frame. This will be added to the card pocket side of the wallet. The female half of the wallet has an opening for the clasp to hook into. This will be added to the zipper pocket half of the wallet (Diagram 14). In order to use the clasp properly you will need to stitch and trim away a bit of fabric from the bottom of the zipper pocket. Using the female half of the frame and a pencil, trace the opening on the wallet (Diagram 15). Stitch as close to the lines you drew as possible and then trim away the excess fabric (Diagram 16).

Step 14: The final step! Now that all your sewing is done all you need to do to complete your wallet is attach the frame. The Diva frames that I use come with screws to attach the frame to your wallet. You will need a very tiny Philips head screwdriver as well. Tip: Although glue is not required or necessary to complete this last step I like to use a bit inside the frame for added security and durability – I am tough on my wallets & bags! My preferred brand is Gutermann HT2 and I also like Beacon 527 Multi-Purpose Glue.

Congratulations - you’re finished!!
