La StazioneFine Dining Pizzeria
Maintaining the romantic authenticity of a vin-
tage train station while refining the space with
the luxury of modern Italian style, striking per-
fect harmony between what was then and what
is now. LA STAZIONE
This spacious 1920 train station has been
transformed into the luxurious fine dining pizze-
ria LA Stazione. The character of the original
structure is being celebrated by highlighting the
architecture with pieces of dramatic accent
lighting. Visual interest is also created by jux-
taposing textural materials such as brick and
wood with smooth and reflective modern fin-
ishes. Up on entering La Stazione the quest is
enveloped by a sophisticated color palate of
deep burgundies, sensuous earth tones, and
fiery oranges. Exaggerated textures, rich hues,
and modern lines breathe contemporary life
into the vintage structure.

IDEAS DESIGN BY NATUrE I
Jessica Di BiaseParsons the New School for Design
FireStarting from one single sheet of paper, I decided to make three rings that surround one single
light bulb. Using Adobe Illustrator, the object was able to be laser-cut and created in a short
amount of time. Although I used a virgin material for the project, it can easily be disassembled
and recycled at the end of its use. I decided to add a pattern to the material. it is an original
pattern that i created. It is organic and always changing, never the same shape. I did this to
reflect the importance of its recyclability and the value in taking from virgin material but also
the beauty that can be made from it.
The goal for this project was to develop a structure that can work as an "Active House" and also develop a concept for
the interior design taking into account sustainable materials all within the limits of an external dimension of a W 900cm x
D 900cm x H 900cm cube. For my project I started by wanting to minimize environmental impacts by taking advantage
of natural light, ventilation, and rainwater. I also wanted to have a green garden and solar panels included in my design.
With that in mind I came up with the idea of designing a house that could act as a water front house. This got me to de-
sign a house that would contain a serious of in and out pockets to take advantage of comfortable outside spaces and of
views to the outside. My design contains a roof garden which also helps to collect the rain water for reusing it in either
outside gardens or toilet use and can improve air quality. There are also bigger windows in the most common or most
used areas of the house which can create a feeling of being in the outside and also increase the advantage of natural
light and ventilation throughout. The roof contains a slop on a part of it which is used to locate solar panels and get the
most effective use out of natural sun light. There were some major materials which I decide to use for my design that I
thought worked well in this scenario and could also be eco-friendly. The main material being used on the exterior is re-
cycled/reused wood panels which is readily available. The main materials being used for the interior are bamboo, cork,
and wood. The most important part why I choose these materials is because of their sustainable component and their
multiple use: flooring, wall use, cabinets, and furniture. I tried to design an interior that not only used furniture from com-
panies that practice sustainability but also implicating reusable materials to create some or part of a furniture being used.
The organization of the rooms, furniture, and appliances along with the materials being used as a whole help to minimize
environmental impacts which was essentially the main goal of this project.

The Active Water Front House
Most active and Passive house studies are done for buildings located in cold climates, however very limited research is
available for those in warm or tropical climates. My active house aims at exploring various possibilities for the existence
of an active house in a warm and dry climate. Therefore this active house is located in New Delhi, India.
The entire design and plan of this house revolves around the central courtyard. The courtyard along with the house is
sunken into the ground, reducing the surface area exposed to the sun, allowing the ground to act as a great source of
thermal mass. Through the addition of a tree and water body in the central courtyard, a resultant microclimate is created
within the interior of the house reducing the load on electricity for temperature control. The house also takes advantage
of the access to solar energy through solar panels.

What really intrigues me are the emotions and topics that people aren’t always comfortable with
sharing. I love being able to create a moment in an image that is child-like in the sense that
nothing is held back, everything can be seen. Like when a person is so joyous that they want
to yell, jump, and dance. Or like capturing those moments when a person’s spirit is so crushed
that they can’t help, but fall to their knees and cry. These are the moments when we truly get
to know a person and how they think and how they feel about life. So creating images that
show people with no inhibitions or the type of composure less raw emotions that only children
seem to be willing to share with the world are what my pieces thrive around. In my pieces I use
bold colors to help portray the mood that I am looking to portray. Art is how I express myself
with the world and I feel that they, in turn, get to know me.

Why? It's a reasonable question. Let's celebrate it.
It can be culture, it can be a favorite food, it can be
the stuff between your toes, but above all it can be
because we are here to say it. 'It' is space. 'It' is time.
'It' is you and me. With all the things happening in
the world, the horror, the peace, the destruction, the
generosity, the greed and the vanity, I keep my
laugh-lines because I don't know why. Why does
anyone use their hands anymore? To create? To say
they've done something? To stay human? I'm stub-
born. I keep looking for it. A scientist with artistic am-
bitions. Not without feeling; maybe too many feelings
sometimes. I want to fipeanut butter or a pat on the
back. Let's be reasonable. The world is and we are.
I am an artist. I make pictures. I write words. Who re-
ally knows why? But I have faith that it won't fail.

As a graphic design student, I have always been
drawn to ideas that are clearly and simply ex-
pressed. In my own work, I try to follow this philoso-
phy while also making people think. I design in two
different ways. The first being very straightforward;
in your face with graphics and typography. The mes-
sage is unavoidable and very clear. The second way
in which I like to work is where the viewer has to look
at the design and slowly pull the meaning out.
This semester I created posters for a Rolling Stone
article about gay bullying in Anoka, Minnesota. The
bullying has led to an alarming suicide rate and the
teachers and administrators in the public schools are
not addressing or trying to solve the problem. Being
such a dramatic and sad story and such a sensitive,
hot topic in America, I wanted to express the article
by using subtle text to make the message slowly sink
with the viewer. This method aligns with the dark-
ness of the story and makes the viewer think: How
can this be happening?

I just draw. I try to let my subconscious dictate the
conceptual aspect of my pieces. My aesthetic
touches upon the elegance, mystery and grit of
the moments I choose to portray. Though I often
depict somber scenes it is not meant to be de-
pressing. There is something special in showcas-
ing these overlooked events.

These images are composites. They are made up of many different photographs of the
scenes/objects. I wanted to capture various elements of my life in Florence in a unique way.

UntitledThis photo was shot as I was walking across the Ponte Vecchio
on my way to do a photo assignment. I heard the little black dog
before I actually saw him and when his owner stopped to chat with
a fellow dog owner I knew the little guy wouldn't be happy. I
quickly sat down and started shooting as the two dogs ap-
proached each other. This photo is the outcome of what happened
between the two dogs.

Theoretically Time alone has no effect on Space. Space can not be altered by time alone,
something has to act upon the space to change it or modify its appearance. Space is not
changed by time, but rather by acts both human and natural. Over time and evolution, we
as humans alter the landscape and appearance of space. We as humans dictate a space
in its original form and then change it over and over again to best accommodate our needs.
We find ways to accommodate our needs by altering a space within the possibilities al-
lowed by the former space. We build up and dig down. We move closer and we move
away.

UntitledMy approach to photography extends from my graphic design experience and vision. I tend
to look at things in the same way, by breaking up spaces and objects into shapes that are es-
thetically pleasing to me. I would design a layout in the same way I would take a photograph,
creating balance and interest while giving every element a purpose.

Many students find love in Florence while studying
abroad. When looking into the emotional and physi-
cal attraction one has for another, you start to under-
stand their relationship in depth and you may start
to feel as though you may know this couple. Intimate
photography opens a door into one's personal life
and intimate moments and strives to evoke emotion.

Ballerina a ChiaroscuroThis project intends to capture intrinsic beauty of dance. It is not
only a form of language but an art in itself. With complete control
of their bodies dancers are able to express the most powerful of
human emotions. It resounds within each of us when we see a
truly gifted performer dance. To be able to capture this artistry on
film is both a challenge and a pleasure.

On the Wicklow TrailOn a quiet, still day, walking through the Wicklow countryside, this scene perfectly
displayed a sense of serenity and comfort. The woods are completely devoid of peo-
ple, but this Irish setting seems both dangerous and inviting; foreboding, yet soft. The
trees and moss reflect the dim sunlight that was peeking through the clouds, making
this scene and this day a depiction of wonder.

Found in Florence PodcastsI chose to do my podcasts on people that I "found" in Florence. I wanted to have a
spin on their stories about what they do in Florence or something that they have ex-
pertise in. I used the work as a sort of visual diary for myself as well to capture and
remember the people I've met and have known in Florence.

Frame my life Frame my life is a sort series of video interview's about my friends in florence,
people I have meet since I began at fua last semester. It has been very interest-
ing to interview my close's friends because I found so much more information i
didn't already know about there life's until now. Video is the strongest element in
my podcast shows, I think this because I am trying to bring out the person not
only through the audio but more so in the video aspected. For me seeing just a
close up of somebodys face is worth more then words.

Sto Qua, Stai LaSto Qua, Stai La is a an experiment with After Effects to combine composited im-
ages and distorted audio to achieve a conceptual purpose. The piece displays a
method of layering still and motion images to create a fluid pace and contrast of
movement. The concept is based around the feeling of restlessness and struggle to
grasp what one cannot reach. This is particularly apparent in the distorted, washed
out imagery in intertwining with the resonance of audio. This combination works to-
gether to achieve a sense of continuous longing and emptiness in perception. At its
conclusion, the pacing is increased to a climax and is suddenly halted to portray a
finality of inadequacy.
