APPRECIATING THE EUCHARIST

For centuries today’s feast was called Corpus Christi (the

Body of Christ) and was observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sun-

day. In many countries it has now been moved to Sunday, so that

more people may participate in its celebration. In its present form,

the liturgy of this day focuses our attention on the meaning of the

Eucharist that we celebrate so often.

Today’s reading from Genesis tells how “Melchizedek, king

of Salem, brought out bread and wine” and prayed over Abram.

Though it took place nearly two thousand years before Jesus, this

event has long been used by the Church as an ancient foreshadow-

ing of the Eucharist.

The reading from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians is the

same one we hear proclaimed on Holy Thursday, retelling the story

of the first blessing and sharing of bread and wine at the Last Sup-

per. Luke’s tale of the miraculous feeding of the crowd in today’s

Gospel is also clearly intended to evoke the Eucharist. Thus today’s

readings give us three opportunities to deepen our appreciation of

APRECIAR LA EUCARISTÍA

Durante siglos, la fiesta que hoy celebramos se llamó Corpus

Christi (Cuerpo de Cristo) y se conmemoraba el jueves siguiente al

Domingo de la Santísima Trinidad. En muchos países ha sido movida

al domingo siguiente, para que más personas puedan participar de

esta celebración. Hoy en día, la liturgia de esta fiesta concentra

nuestra atención en el significado de la Eucaristía, que tantas veces

recibimos.

La lectura de hoy del Génesis nos dice cómo

“Melquisedec, rey de Salem, presentó pan y vino” y bendijo a

Abram. Aunque esto tuvo lugar casi dos mil años antes de Cristo,

este momento ha sido usado siempre por la Iglesia como un

anuncio de la Eucaristía.

La lectura de la carta de Pablo a los corintios es la misma

que se proclama el Jueves Santo, volviéndonos a contar la historia

de la primera bendición y distribución del pan y el vino en la Última

Cena. La historia de Lucas sobre la multiplicación milagrosa de los

panes y los peces para alimentar a una multitud en el Evangelio de

hoy es una clara alusión a la Eucaristía. Por tanto, las tres lecturas

de hoy nos brindan la oportunidad de profundizar nuestro aprecio

por el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

We owe today’s beautiful feast to a valiant woman

who suffered a great deal to establish a feast out of her

love for the Eucharist. Juliana was a nun in Belgium in the

thirteenth century. She served in a hospital for lepers. She

became convinced through her prayer that the liturgical

year was incomplete because it had no feast for the Eucha-

rist. Her efforts were not welcome, and a supervising priest

sought to punish her for promoting a feast that “nobody

wanted.” He even had her accused of financial misman-

agement and banished her from her convent.

Shortly after she was exiled, the bishop approved

the feast. It quickly spread through Europe. In those days,

people very seldom received Holy Communion, and so the

processions through the streets with the Eucharistic

bread not only led to an awareness of Christ’s hunger to

be with us, but prepared the way for a deeper desire to

receive Christ’s Body and Blood in more frequent Com-

munion. The feast grew rapidly, but Juliana disappeared

into poverty and a hidden life. She ended her days as an

“anchoress,” a woman living in seclusion in a room at-

tached to a parish church. Imagine her delight at seeing

us gathered at the table of the Lord on this day, aware of

Christ’s presence in our midst, sharing fully in Christ’s

Body and Blood. Our celebration today invests her strug-

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Perú tiene más de 3000 fiestas cada año,

normalmente en torno al santo patrón de algún

pueblo. La celebración de Corpus Christi es cele-

brada en todo el país. Pero es más llamativa en

Cusco. Durante el día se escucha el repique de

María Angola, la campana más grande de todo

Perú, que existe desde el siglo XVI.

La celebración incluye una procesión con

quince santos y vírgenes del siglo XVII, que vienen

desde sus santuarios hasta la barroca Catedral de

Cusco para honrar el Cuerpo de Jesús. Estas imá-

genes son cargadas por la plaza de armas antes

de llegar a la catedral donde se quedarán hasta el

octavo día. Según los peruanos los santos y vírge-

nes pasan las siete noches platicando con el Señor

de los temblores, bromeando y planificando el año

que viene para sus parroquias. El último día los

santos y vírgenes regresan a sus santuarios con

otra procesión.

Estas dos procesiones nos recuerdan que

por mucho que los latinoamericanos amemos y

veneremos a los santos y vírgenes reconocemos

que tanto ellos como nosotros están al servicio de

SACRED HEART ENTHRONEMENT The designs of His Heart are from age to age, to rescue their

souls from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Ps. 33

Each of us has access to the Heart of Christ because we are

children of the Father, the Creator, who sent His Son to suffer

and die so that we may attain salvation. In the Heart of Christ

is where we find peace, real, lasting peace that Jesus promised

his disciples before His Ascension. "A peace that the world can-

not give," is what He assured us. Worldly peace is fleeting, it

depends on the happenings of the day. The peace that Jesus

promised is deep within our souls and can be experienced in

the midst of turmoil, if we remember that this is not our home.

Heaven is our true dwelling place and we can live there, even

now, by placing our trust in the One who invites us and assures

us of our inheritance. The Lord is my Shepherd, there is noth-

ing I shall want. Jesus, I trust in You.

Cada uno de nosotros tiene acceso al Corazón de Jesús porque

somos los hijos del Padre, el Creador, quien envió a Su Hijo

para sufrir y morir para que pudiéramos alcanzar la salvación.

En el Corazón de Jesús es donde nosotros encontramos la paz,

real, paz perdurable que Jesús prometió a sus discípulos antes

de Su Ascensión. “Una paz que el mundo no puede dar,” es lo

que Él nos aseguró. La paz mundana es efímera, depende de

lo que suceda en el día. La paz que Jesús promete está en lo

profundo de nuestras almas y puede ser experimentada en

medio de la agitación, si nosotros recordamos que este no es

nuestro hogar. El cielo es nuestro verdadero lugar de vivienda

y nosotros podemos vivir allí, aun ahora, al poner nuestra con-

fianza en el Único quien nos invita y nos asegura de nuestra

herencia. El Señor es mi Pastor, nada me falta. Jesús, En ti

confió. Inviten al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús a sus hogares y

corazones apuntándose hoy para entronizar su hogar.

What is the meaning of Melchizedek’s

offering?

At the heart of the Eucharistic celebration are the bread and

wine that, by the words of Christ and the invocation of the

Holy Spirit, become Christ’s Body and Blood. Faithful to the

Lord’s command the Church continues to do, in his memory

and until his glorious return, what he did on the eve of his

Passion: “He took bread....” “He took the cup filled with

wine....” The signs of bread and wine become, in a way sur-

passing understanding, the Body and Blood of Christ; they

continue also to signify the goodness of creation. Thus in the

Offertory we give thanks to the Creator for bread and wine,

fruit of the “work of human hands,” but above all as “fruit of

the earth” and “of the vine” — gifts of the Creator. The Church

sees in the gesture of the king-priest Melchizedek, who

“brought out bread and wine,” a prefiguring of her own

offering.

¿Cuál es el significado del Sacrificio

de Melquisedec?

En el corazón de la celebración de la Eucaristía se encuen-

tran el pan y el vino que, por las palabras de Cristo y por la

invocación del Espíritu Santo, se convierten en el Cuerpo y la

Sangre de Cristo. Fiel a la orden del Señor, la Iglesia continúa

haciendo, en memoria de Él, hasta su retorno glorioso, lo que

Él hizo la víspera de su pasión: "Tomó pan...", "tomó el cáliz

lleno de vino...". Al convertirse misteriosamente en el Cuerpo

y la Sangre de Cristo, los signos del pan y del vino siguen

significando también la bondad de la creación. Así, en el ofer-

torio, damos gracias al Creador por el pan y el vino, fruto "del

trabajo del hombre", pero antes, "fruto de la tierra" y "de la

vid", dones del Creador. La Iglesia ve en el gesto de Melqui-

sedec, rey y sacerdote, que "ofreció pan y vino", una prefigu-

ración de su propia ofrenda.
