Thumbs Up to...Promoting a healthy lifestyle

THOUGHTS

TO

PONDER

Leading and living a healthy lifestyle is an option we all have; after all, each and every one of us has the freedom of choosing how to live and what to eat. However, when you notice people and organizations around you are encouraging you to live and eat well, you have to give it a shot! December is the health issue, and since we found many topics that deserve a thumbs up, we decided to dedicate the whole page to recognize and highlight these topics/organizations.

The Ministry of Health:The Ministry of Health website (www.moh.gov.sa) is up-to-date and contains plenty of useful information citizens should be aware of. A thumbs up worthy piece of information is if you visit any pharmacy and they don’t have the medicine you need in stock, they make an order and have it delivered to you.

Pharmacies Offering Healthy Foods:When you’re looking for healthy snacks to munch on during your breaks at work, you can visit supermarkets such as Manuel,Danube, or now you can even visit pharmacies and find what you’re

looking for. Some pharmacies around the city, such as Al Nahdi, have sections within the store dedicated to healthy food products such as a variety of cereals and snack bars.

Tips and Signs on Walkways:Some walkways around Jeddah, such as Majra Al Sail, have informative and motivational tips and signs throughout the walkway. For example, signs that mention how much time you should spend warming up before jogging, how and why walking is beneficial for your heart, in addition to signs that mention how much you have been walking.

Healthy Cafeteria Food in Schools:When children are accustomed to eating clean from an early age, they tend to

adapt to a healthy lifestyle and grow up appreciating their state of

wellbeing. Certain schools such as Jeddah Knowledge

School (JKS) and Jeddah

International School (JIS) serve healthy foods on their cafeteria menu including fruits, salads, fruit

yogurt, fruit cups and fresh juices.

MMA dates to the Olympics of ancient Greece, where it all began in the form of hand-to-hand fights referred to as a sport called pankration, derived from the Greek words pan and kratos, meaning “all powers.” Starting as a simple competition with the only two rules being no biting and no eye gouging, pankration increased in popularity and shortly spread to India then Brazil and eventually branched out further worldwide.

As the sport spread worldwide, citizens of each country began to build on it according to their own preferences and traditions, creating new styles of martial arts and simultaneously learning different types from one another. For example, Brazilian jiu-jitsu came about when an expert in judo practiced and spread his teachings in Brazil. When a boxer and a jiu-jitsu expert faced each other in a fight, they each had to learn about their opponent’s type of sport in order to defend

themselves and become well-rounded wrestlers. With time, people began to create mixed-style competitions using different forms of martial arts and that led to the rapid growth in the popularity of MMA.

MMA has greatly increased in popularity within the Middle Eastern countries in the past few years; many training facilities began opening and the TV show Desert Force, aired on MBC Action, provided fighters and wrestlers with an opportunity to showcase their talent within the region, compete against one another and become champions.

Abdulaziz Julaidan is a Saudi MMA wrestler residing in Switzerland. Julaidan has a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has won quite a few competitions during his time abroad before entering and making his presence in the Middle Eastern MMA scene. Julaidan competed three times so

He has been competing for over five years now, trains twice daily and follows a strict diet in order to stay in shape and remain well prepared for future competitions.

In a post fight interview, Julaidan said he wanted the Shield to come to Saudi Arabia in 2014. The Shield is a professional wrestling stable in WWE, consisting of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. The Shield debuted in November 2012 at the Survivor Series, and Ambrose currently holds the title as WWE United States Champion. Let’s stay tuned and see what happens when and if they do come to KSA!

I like doing different exercises everyday in order to work out all muscles in many ways. I enjoy yoga once a week, power Pilates (I love it because it’s a mix of Pilates and weights), kickboxing, weights and aerobics.

I like tabata training because it fires up the metabolism, it’s an excellent way to burn fat and also improve mental toughness. Also, it isn’t time consuming! I also enjoy high intensity interval training in addition to sit-ups and weight lifting.

I love working out with people, so bootcamp would be my top choice (I go to Alains Bootcamp – definitely recommended!) On my own time I like all kinds of squats and definitely burpees – they’re simply a calorie-torching, strength-building, full body exercise!

I love challenging exercises like spinning and any high intensity cardio and strength workout combination.

I love doing group sports like hiking, basketball and football – it’s way more fun! I also enjoy yoga because it’s amazing for your health.

My cross-trainer! It works out more muscles in my body than a treadmill, in half the time, and when I want to break more sweat all I need to do is add weights!

I enjoy walking because it’s a group exercise that gives me the opportunity tospend quality time with family and friends while simultaneously burning calories.

Zumba! It’s a fun workout and you can burn up to 600 – 800 calories in just one hour! An added benefit is that it makes me feel like I’ve got moves ;-)

I like Les Mills because it consists of more than 10 programs. My favorites are Grit (30-minute training, building strength and burning fat), Body Attack, Body Combat (mixed martial arts, builds self-confidence), Body Pump (one of the world’s fastest ways to get in shape), RPM (cycling workout), and Core Board workout to help improve balance and build core stability.

I love abdominal exercises like sit-ups and planks for toning purposes, and I love boxing because it’s an excellent stress reliever.

Definitely swimming – it’s fun and it works out all body muscles.

I love squats simply because they’re one of the best leg workouts and I love my cross-trainer.

Like most road trips in Saudi Arabia, ours began with advice on how to apply dishwashing soap to the front of the rental car.

Khaki-colored hoods are a quintessentially telltale sign of a Saudi car on a long drive, much like the presence of Vimto in grocery stores during Ramadan.

Fairy is apparently the preferred brand but paint defender sprays purchased from gas stations work just as well. The end goal is to ensure the front portion of the vehicle is protected from effectively being sandblasted as you clock around 170 kilometers per hour (105 miles per hour) on your drive.

We had about 700 kilometers of driving ahead of us to arrive at our first destination on our weeklong road trip, the Wahba crater, the largest of its kind in the Middle East; two bottles of the protective spray were purchased.

WABHA CRATER

While driving, the sand surrounding the highway becomes ubiquitous and invisible. Yet between looking out for traffic police cars lurking under camel overpasses and the speed camera and radars the surprising diversity of Saudi Arabia’s landscape materializes.

Rock massifs, volcanic cones, almost extraterrestrial rock formations, intertwined with date palm farms with brown and yellow parched leaves, and free-roaming camel herds made up the drive to the crater.

The landscape ranged widely on the drive, and as we got closer to the crater the scenery became increasingly rocky and surreal. You can see a variety of soil colors and textures ranging from extreme red to almost white, but the rock formations were the most startling aspect.

Not enough can be said about the eerie rock formations that emerge seemingly out of nowhere in desolate landscapes.

Comparisons to the topography of Mars were made repeatedly, which helped me decide on my subsequent career as a location scout for sci-fi movies, if Saudi Arabia ever does decide to open up to Hollywood film crews.

About six hours later we exited off the main Riyadh-Makkah highway and drove through several very small communities and lava fields until the end of the newly paved road, where four metal poles stop cars from driving any farther.

The road ends exactly at the crater’s rim. The crater is spectacularly massive. It is roughly 2 kilometers wide, situated on the edge of the Harrat Kishb lava field. The edge drops by around 250 meters to the base, making for an extreme cliff edge.

According to Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Earthquakes and Volcanoes, the crater is a result of a “phreatic explosion caused by the near-instantaneous generation of steam at the contact between rising magma and ground water.”

In layman terms it means very hot lava came into contact with water, causing a massive instant eruption, resulting in this huge hole in the middle of what is now a desert.

The crater’s floor is a saltpan; the center almost entirely covered by a thin white sheet, although apparently in the winter it turns into a small lake.

We arrived right before sunset. The intense color disparity between the backdrop of the black lava fields, white salt at the bottom of the crater, and a blue sky tinged with the gold of the setting sun made for an impressive end to the drive.

Photos sent to a Saudi friend promoted an incredulous response: “Are you guys even in Saudi?” It’s impressively enormous in real life, and the photographs don’t do justice to the loneliness of the crater’s isolation.

The photographs also fail to capture the echo of the wind blowing over the lava field and that, quite possibly, was the best part.

* The Wabha Crater is under the protection of the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development (NCWCD) which strives to promote ecotourism. Camping is permitted but there are no amenities provided for visitors, and those who decide to camp are asked to also remove any trash they accumulate to preserve the area.

THE CRATER IS SPECTACULARLY MASSIVE.

TIP #1:FEEL GOOD FIRST,LOOK GOOD LATERThere are times when people get confused and think that a velvet “I’m a princess” tracksuit is proper sportswear – it’s not. Your chic-ness shouldn’t be messing with your workout. As much as possible, choose materials that would keep you dry and allows for the mobility your activity requires.

TIP #3:

LEAVE THESE IN YOUR CLOSET:• All Cotton Clothes – absorbs

sweat, takes time to dry, which can cause chills, skin irritation and heaviness of fabrics. Invest instead in Dri-fit fabrics.

• Baggy Clothing – (Unless your classes state otherwise), if it doesn’t fit, leave it because not only is it unflattering, it can be a hazard if you’re using the gym equipment and machines.

• Accessories – Minus a pedometer or your workout gadget, leave your jewelry safe at home or in your locker. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings can easily get tangled into something.

• Worn Out Shoes and Clothes – How do you know if it’s time to retire your favorite kicks and shirt? If you run at least twice a week, expect to change it at least once a year. Exercise clothes get more beat up than the rest of your wardrobe, the sweat and constant wash can easily take its toll. Throw it away once it begins to form an odor of its own (eww!).

Before your next workout session, make sure you’re wearing the right kind of sneakers. If you’re unclear regarding the differences, ask your trainer.

4. SPRINTING SHOES:Sprinting and running shoes do not differ much, but sprinting shoes need to have more cushioning and padding in order to absorb any abrupt movements.

Chinese cuisine differs from region to region and has changed plenty of times throughout its history depending on people, time and traditions. With extensive knowledge in the Asian culinary field, Chinese national Chef Zhang Chao joined Rosewood’s Noodles restaurant as Chef de Cuisine in 2012.

The eight culinary traditions of China are Chuan (Szechuan), Hui (Anhui), Lu (Shandong), Min (Fujian), Su (Jiangsu), Yue (Hong Kong and Guangdong), Xiang (Hunan) and Zhe (Zhejiang). Each cuisine uses different recipes, spices and flavors depending on its people and their traditions. Chef Zhang, a chef with extensive knowledge and training in all sectors of Chinese cuisine, has recently made some notable changes in Rosewood's Noodles restaurant. Chao is a Chinese Cooking College graduate who came to Rosewood Corniche in Jeddah after gaining over 13 years of experience at hotels in locations such as China, Jubail and the Bahamas, where he would cook for up to 400 guests per evening.

When he arrived to Rosewood Corniche in 2012 and began his journey as Noodles' Chef de Cuisine, Chao noticed the menu was lacking a local touch. He began writing a new menu based on dishes customers have requested and flavors they have asked him for previously. The result was an updated, enhanced menu consisting of authentic traditional Chinese food from all regions infused with spices to appeal to local taste. One dish Chao added to Noodles menu is the Steamed Najil. This dish is seasoned with chili pickles and garlic and served with brocoli on a bed of grass noodles. Another signature dish is the Chili Chili Chicken, which consists of fried crispy chicken seasoned with fresh chili and Chao’s secret chili sauce. Chili Chili Chicken is served

Chuan (Szechuan) is a style of Chinese cuisine originating in the Sichuan province of China known for their bold, spicy flavors and their use of garlic and chili peppers. The Beef Szechuan at Noodles, seasoned with just the right amount of garlic, coriander, chili and soya sauce, is a perfect representation of the Szechuan province.

At Noodles, there's something for everyone. Guests can watch Chao and his associates as they cook their noodles, dumplings and spring rolls using their own special recipes from scratch. They don't use machines and they don't import any ready-made products; every meal is handmade from A to Z. Children can enjoy the kids area, equipped with little tables, chairs, drawing pads and a PlayStation. Noodles Business Lunch menu is definitely an appealing deal. With a fixed price of SR 120 (including water and soft drinks), guests

can choose their preferred meal from five different set menus. Each menu consists of soup, an appetizer and different types of main courses (including beef, fish and chicken) that come in ideal portions. The concept behind the Business Lunch menu is convenience. Chao is aware of the busy schedule businessmen and women lead, and therefore prepares their meal within 10 minutes so they can enjoy and get on with their business! Note: The Business Lunch menu is available Monday through Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Apart from Sundays, Noodles is open everyday from noon to midnight.

LOVERSVEGGIEWho is José D. Ortiz?José D. Ortiz moved to Jeddah in July 2010 from Palma de Mallorca, Spain. After reaching 142 kilograms in weight he decided to make a change in life and go from ‘all you can eat’ to ‘all you decide to eat.’

In a society that loves meat, choosing to eat in a manner that does not harm animals is not always easy. Vegetarian options (food that does not contain meat, poultry or fish) are in short supply in many restaurants. Vegan dishes take animals into consideration even one step further: dishes do not contain any ingredients that come from an animal source. This means: no eggs, cheese or other dairy products.

José D. Ortiz is a Jeddah-based certified personal fitness trainer. He chooses to eat vegan foods when available or vegetarian when they are not. He says it might not be easy to eat animal-friendly foods in Jeddah restaurants, but options are always available. In supermarkets and stores, tasty substitutes for animal products are widely available. Try some!

José became a certified fitness personal trainer, changed his food habits, thoroughly studied nutrition and how the human body works, learned the importance of sports and always listened to what his body was telling him rather than worry about the number on the scale. Due to those changes, he lost approximately 40 kilograms.

His toughest challenge was to hang out with friends in a ‘healthy way’ while not missing out on any of the restaurants they chose. He did quite well! For ethical reasons he is now as vegan as he can be and chooses to be vegetarian always when a vegan choice is not available. José was unable to run when he was morbidly obese. In November he ran his fifth half marathon in Abu Dhabi, and he hopes to try his first marathon in Dubai in January.

• Yucatan Soup (Mexican vegetable soup with sweet corn and nachos). Alternatively you could try their Cream of Mushroom or Insalata Verde.

• Panini Greco (feta cheese, lettuce, kalamata olives, cucumber and tomato). Their Spinach Pizza and Risotto al Funghi are also very good. Avoid the Vegetable Pizza here. It is definitely not their best treat.

• Fruit Salad

The soup was at its best temperature; not too cold not too hot, and a little spicy, mild, tasty. The panini was served with a flower made out of cucumber and a serving of French fries. You can always ask for salad instead if you are watching your weight. The dish was light and easy to eat. A perfectly sliced, light and healthy fruit salad showered with juice was the perfect option for dessert.

If you are not yet ready to eat vegetarian but you want to watch your food intake, their Chicken Caesar Salad is served with one of the best Caesar sauces in the city. La Promenade’s grilled chicken is second to none. The Panna Cotta dessert will transport you to the Italian region of Piemontestraight away!

I kept on gaining back all the weight I lost during the diet. I found that a few simple questions are best to get you started (and keep you going) on your way to a healthy lifestyle.

DO YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT?WHAT IS YOUR REASON? We all need a trigger point to change to a healthy life. Mine was to become a good and consistent role model for my son that was about to be bornin 2011.

cholesterol-lowering, and virus-inhibiting effects. (Source: www.cancer.org)

• It is promoted as a good non-animal source of iron.

• It is full of dietary fiber, making you feel full for more time after eating it.

Germany is known for its rich history and many touristic attractions. But the island of Sylt in the North Sea of northern Germany is the brightest and largest diamond – at 13 kilometers wide and 38 kilometers long – among the jewels that make up the North Frisian Islands. Sylt serves as a destination for Germany’s frolicking jet set and the tourist looking for an upscale alternative to Germany’s other landmarks.

Forty kilometers of pristine sandy beaches surround Sylt, home to the island’s iconic lighthouses and approximately 12,000 beach baskets, or strandkorb, Germany’s version of a canopied outdoor love seat. The beach baskets have storage space under the seat and can stand against wind and rough weather with an enviable lifespan of up to 20 years. Sylt has a dozen areas of interests: List (northernmost tip of the island), Kampen (the

Overlooking the frigid North Sea, the hotel features four modern buildings connected by bridges. Budersand also consists of numerous outdoor terraces providing guests with breathtaking views of the sea, sky, dunes and the harbor. Nature is extremely important at Sylt; for that reason the Budersand, like many of the island’s buildings, is surrounded by vegetation and wooden boardwalks allowing guests to experience the island’s botanical splendor. The hotel is designed to allow guests in almost all of the 79 rooms to enjoy an endless view from all four directions, including Germany’s first Scottish-style 18-hole golf course.

During our tour, we noticed how Sylt is dotted with small thatched roof houses, as if we were stepping into the tale of Hansel and Gretel. The island has its own dialect called Söl’ring, which is only spoken by four percent of the population. Sylt is a famous secondary residence and is known as “the island of the rich and beautiful.” Due to its sense of serenity, beauty, luxury and comfort, the island has always been attractive to Germany’s richest residents.

Our first culinary experience was at La Grande Plage restaurant in Kampen. The restaurant is nice and hip, and is reached by taking a long walk along the beach. We were infatuated with the relaxed environment, the people in their beachwear and the surfers lazing about by the water. One of the many things Sylt is known for is its culinary scene. For dinner we went for a fancy meal at Sansibar, a restaurant known for attracting a number of German celebrities including Claudia Schiffer and Boris Becker. It’s a small cozy candle-lit restaurant that

Food guides, such as the Michelin and the Gault Millau, one of the most influential French restaurant guides, have repeatedly given awards to several of the island’s restaurants. Whether visitors are fans of gourmet elegant restaurants or relaxed casual beach bistros, they will be impressed with their dining experiences on the island.

After memorable tours of Sylt and its attractions, we took a train to the wealthiest city in Germany, Hamburg, where we were ferried to the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski. At the hotel’s rooftop terrace and known as the “Phantom Room,” is one of Hamburg’s most sought after locations in terms of privacy and seclusion. The terrace provides guests with a breathtaking view of the city in addition to peace and quiet. The hotel is in the city center, making it easy to visit the city’s

With a peaceful mind and slightly heavier luggage, we flew back to Jeddah. Lufthansa Airlines, who provide travelers with the quickest and most convenient routes, organized our trip. On our trip, we flew to Frankfurt, and then took another flight from there to Sylt. On our way back, we took the train to Hamburg and from there, we came back home. Although some latest scientific research has thrown immense light on the marvelous benefits that different types of foods provide to our body, did you know that these properties were discovered hundreds of years ago by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions? Even with enormous advancement in technology, we are battling a larger number of diseases than what our grandparents had to deal with. So, where exactly are we going wrong? Let us turn back the pages in history to 1,400 years ago to discover the amazing health secrets Prophet Muhammad (S) and his civilization were applying in their lives through the types of foods they had incorporated in their daily diet.

Listed below are five super foods you will find may affect your productivity levels:

The Qur'an testifies to the healing nature of honey, when Allah says: “And your Lord revealed to the bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build: Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it a beverage of many colors, in which there is healing for men; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect.” (Surah An-Nahl, Verses 68-69)

Did you know that honey could be used for treating stress, anemia, burns, insomnia, osteoporosis and abdominal pain? It can also kick off fatigue, digestion related problems; relieve symptoms of sore throat and nasal congestion. So instead of pumping your body with artificial supplements to boost your immune system, utilize this supplement to cure your physical and psychological ailments.

If you were thinking milk was purely meant for children, think again! As a drink, it was the custom of our Prophet (S) to have a combination of dates and milk to get the best out of both. Apart from being rich in calcium, did you know that milk provides several vitamins and minerals in the right proportions, helping your stomach digest and utilize them to the maximum? They are extremely rich in proteins too. These build up your immune system, helping you fight off microorganisms.

Some swear by natural foods, others are more adventurous and try out genetically modified foods that promise to possess super nutrients required in the right amounts. The relationship we share with foods is unique. Love them or hate them, we sure cannot live without them!

Scientists vouch for it, nutritionists cannot get enough of it and it holds an enviable place in the family of cooking oils. Allah also mentions it in the Qur'an. (See Chapter 24, Verse 35)

Olive oil is power-packed with antioxidants that can prevent cancer and premature aging. It is extremely rich in unsaturated fats, preventing the possibility of developing cardiovascular diseases and cholesterol related problems.

One of the Companions, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stated: “Eat the olive oil and apply it (locally), since there is cure for 70 diseases in it, one of them is leprosy.” (Abu Naim)

I hope to have inspired you to revive your intake of some of these super energy foods with multiple benefits. It’s evident that the Islamic civilization and history offer practical ways forward in consumption of food. What scientific discoveries are revealing today was understood and exploited hundreds of years ago!

With the verse of Allah, which means: “Oh mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and good on the earth,” (Chapter 2, Verse 168) it is not surprising to learn that the Prophet and Muslims have been using several foods for curing mild to severe forms of sickness. I hope the aforementioned foods will be a part of your daily diet and you’ll share tips below on other super energy foods you love!

After the hullaballoo of fast foods, people have gone back to traditional methods of including whole grains in their diet. Brown bread has become the latest fad with every diet conscious person swearing about the numerous health benefits. Whole grains are packed with nutrients, vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates and fiber.

What does this mean for you? Well, by including whole grains, you are giving your body a perfect concoction of super beneficial nutrients. In other words, you are keeping obesity, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, digestive problems and cancer at bay inshaAllah.

Whenever a person of the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) fell sick then it was ordered that the barley gruel should be prepared for him. Then he used to state: “It removes the grief of the patient’s heart, removes its weakness as any of you removes the dirt from your face after washing it”. (Ibn Majah) Barley, oats, brown bread and whole wheat are some options you can consider.

water-soluble vitamins along with crucial minerals like calcium and iron. Dates have been mentioned more than 20 times in the Qur'an under various situations, highlighting the immense importance these wonder foods possess.

The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “If somebody takes pressed dates every morning, he will not be effected by poison or magic on that day till night.” (Sahih

It is said that if any one thing in this world has mystical properties, it’s water. We are not only made up of 50 to 60 percent water and living on a planet that is made up of 70 percent of the same simple combination of hydrogen and oxygen, we need our daily fix of pure drinking water (even more than we need our morning coffee!) to survive. But how much water do we really need and why do we need it?

• It is the only weight loss drink you need! A glass of water before meals will help you feel full and control your portions.

• At the start of any diet or exercise regime, the initial rapid weight loss is due to loss of water. Staying hydrated keeps the fat-burning process smooth.

• It aids digestion. • It helps get rid of toxins in your body. • Water boosts your general metabolism; that is, it

keeps the chemical reactions in your body running smoothly.

• Dehydration is a major cause of fatigue and maybe even your constant headache.

• Water lubricates the joints and reduces muscle soreness, especially if you’ve been exercising.

• Hydrated skin will glow! Water helps reduce acne and other skin problems while also leaving you with healthy nails.

• Drinking a good amount of water reduces the risk of a heart attack and colon cancer.

Many applications such as the Water Your Body app will allow you to calculate your required amount of water and remind you at regular intervals to drink up! Alternatively, you can print out a “water card” (or make one yourself if you’re crafty!) and regulate the amount of water you’re having daily. Also, always carry bottled water while you’re on the go so you never have an excuse! If you’re really daring and can part with your daily latte or red bull, some nutritionists recommend replacing one daily drink with a glass of water. Good luck and stay hydrated!

“Your metabolism isn’t fixed. You can impact it significantly with your daily activity and diet.” –Gary Ditsch, Exercise Physiologist

Things that slow down metabolism are…

People always talk about metabolism and how it affects whether they’re losing or gaining weight. So what exactly is metabolism?“Metabolism is the process of breaking down proteins, carbohydrates and fats to produce the energy your body needs to maintain itself.” In other words meaning, it’s the process in which your body converts the food and drink you consume into energy.

SKIPPING BREAKFAST!

BARELY EATING:

When they say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” believe it! One of the worst things you can do if you’re trying to lose weight is skip breakfast; in fact, that’s the main contributing factor to a decrease in metabolism. When you don’t have breakfast within the hour after you wake up, your brain sends a message to the rest of your body telling it to hold on to and store fat. Having breakfast initiates the metabolic process (called thermogenesis) that turns food you eat into energy..

When you eat too little, your body goes into starvation mode and your metabolic rate slows down in an attempt to store the existing fuel it has. Yes, if you’re trying to lose weight you should cut down on your calorie intake but don’t take it to an extreme. Keep in mind that your body needs a certain amount of calories per day just to function..

Metabolism?

“Spicy food boosts production of fat-burning hormones.” – Lori Shemek, PhD, author of Fire-Up Your Fat Burn!

Things that speed up metabolism are…

CALCIUM, FIBERAND PROTEIN!

CAFFEINE:According to the International Journal of Obesity, consuming caffeine can increase your body’s metabolic rate but just by four to five percent. Don’t go overdosing on caffeine though – too much of it can lead to unwanted consequences.

Protein can increase your metabolic rate by up to 35 percent, and fiber can increase it by up to 30 percent. Calcium is a major contributing factor leading to an increase in your metabolic rate because a diet high in calcium helps you burn more fat. So add lots of milk to your grocery-shopping list!

1. CREATE A BEDTIME RITUALThis could be anything from stretching, watching a light TV show, reading a comforting book or praying – as long as it is relaxing to you. After a few days these activities will be a signal to your body that it’s time to sleep.

2. FEEL SAFEThe bedroom must give the feeling of safety and comfort. Shut the doors and windows, lock the front doors and turn off what needs to be turned off. The ancient Chinese architectural practice Feng Shui prefer to have the bed not facing the door, to give the sleeper the feeling of being enclosed and safe. Also, keep everything you might need right at your bedside table.

3. PREPARE THE BEDROOMSoft neutral colors are best for the bedroom. Find soft fluffy sheets in a comforting light color that keeps you nicely bundled up – like a nest! Make sure there aren’t too many distractions but don’t leave the bedroom bare and empty, the idea is to create the feeling of being hugged!

4. START DIMMING EARLIERThe main element that affects sleeping is light, it affects how much melatonin is produced in our brain, which controls sleep and wake cycle. Thus, working on dimming the lights gradually till you go to sleep is key.

No one can deny the beauty of sleep, but sometimes we can forget about the power of sleep. We spend a whopping one-third of our lives snoozing, and the quality and depth of our sleep counts. 5. LIMIT DAYTIME NAPPINGNapping is a must for some people, but sometimes you get more than you need. You should nap light and not go into deep REM sleep, and limit it to 20-30 minutes and in the afternoon. Otherwise, over-napping can make you feel groggy and tired.

6. SLEEP WHEN TIREDSometimes we can force ourselves to bed and we get stressed over not sleeping to the point where we can’t sleep. Harvard Medical states that if you’re not asleep after 20 minutes, get up and do something relaxing like reading until you feel tired. Constantly checking the clock could also induce more stress.

7. SOUNDSThe soothing sound of the A/C is an actual reason for better sleep, that’s why white-noise generators are made. Having a consistent sound masks all the other small sounds that could make someone alert.

SNORING: What you should know...By Fatmah Azam Ali

A shocking fact: almost 45 percent of adults snore in their sleep. Snoring happens when the tissues vibrate due to turbulent airflow in your sleep. While there are many biological reasons as to why snoring takes place, it is definitely interesting to know how we can stop snoring in our sleep.

• WEIGHT ISSUES: Try losing a couple of pounds to see if your snores are reduced as extra weight around the throat may make you snore.

• NASAL STRIPS: People tend to snore if their noses are blocked. Try using the nasal strips to solve the snoring issue.

• REMOVE ALLERGENS: If you are allergic and are on sedatives that can be just the root problem you were looking for to get rid of your snoring.

• LACK OF SLEEP: If you weren’t having any proper sleep lately, all that snoring is due to lack of sleep.

• DEHYDRATION can also be one of the reasons as to why you snore. The stickier the nose secretions become due to dehydration, the more you snore.

• SEEKING MEDICAL HELP: If you have tried everything above and notice that everything is OK and yet you are snoring, you should seek medical help immediately where the doctors will check you for the obstructive sleep apnea, a serious medical condition that requires treatment.

7 MUST-DO HEALTH RESOLUTIONS

FOR 2014With the new year around the corner, we think about what we should be doing differently and better this year in order to be a better person or in a better health. If you made 20 resolutions,

naturally, you will make up to at least five, which definitely is quite an improvement. According to me, our health changes every year and so do our resolutions. I’d like to list the top seven

“must-do” health resolutions this year for most of us...

By Fatmah Azam Ali

2. Call your loved ones: Let’s admit- we are losing contacts and are hardly even chatting online with our loved ones- thanks to our ever-going busy routine. This year, we keep in touch with all by giving a call or sending a message to at least one of our loved one every week.

3. Quit smoking: It does no good, we all know that. Going cold-turkey entirely isn’t going to help so the best thing is to reverse your way of thinking. Imagine how much money you are putting into something that is not even doing any good to your body.

4. Securing your future: Yes, this is by saving money. While there are some gifted people who don’t really need to look into this, many of us still do. Save your money. Every month. By the end of the year, you would be so surprised on how much you actually have and you can definitely consider an investment!

5. Don’t get stress-busted: Tell yourself this year that you are not going to exhaust yourself until you are left for nothing. This year, you will exercise, do yoga and keep your work schedules straight and look after your health. Nothing is worth more than your health.

6. Re-collect school memories: Have a reunion this year. Live how you lived earlier. The change this reunion would bring, you will surely thank me later (**winks**)

1. Losing weight: If you are one of those healthy individuals who work out and look after their weight, good job! But if you don’t, lose no hope! There is nothing more encouraging than making a new health resolution to make a better you in this new year!
