ChangeHaiti is grappling to return to a basic sense of normalcy. The scale of the tragedy is one not often seen with an entire capitol city turned upside down destroying nearly everything in its wake. We are reminded everyday just how fragile

our social structure really is as the images of rescuers work day and night to save trapped victims weeks after the tragedy occurred. To learn from the tragedy Jeddah-wis can benefit by taking advantage of cooler weather to enjoy some Jeddah fun that isn’t going to the beach or shopping. Jeddah has more to offer and hopefully in the years to come it will have more. In January Saudi Arabia’s very first paintball arena opened up giving Jed-dah its first taste of the fun and the pain that comes with firing hard balls of paint with compressed air at Jeddah Strikers located in Abhur.

The cooler temperatures also mean desert outings can be enjoyed more fully and for longer periods of time. Recently 130 entrepreneurs from around the world were treated by Fainak to a 5-star experience of traditional music and dance, horseback riding as well as other events showcasing local talent like Saudi rapper Qusai and comedian Rami Salameh. In this issue we’ve highlighted two different horse riding places for you to consider next time you’re at a loss for things to do. Horse riding is an excellent exercise both for your body as it stimulates close to every muscle in your body.

Thanks to the physical benefits, children with cerebral palsy and autism can benefit with programs like the Jeddah Open Skies program allowing them to interact with horses as well as stimulate cognitive and muscular development at Al-Seel Stables.

We’ve also taken a quick look at graffiti in and around town because when it is done well, it adds a differ-ent flavor to our fair city. Despite everything that is happening in the world we at DJ hope you have a great February and one where you’ll discover something new.

I was in Jeddah Hilton recently just for a couple of days and happened to go through your magazine - Destination Jeddah. Excellent work and I must congratulate your team for an interesting handbook very informative and interesting. Immediately I asked for earlier copies and the hotel was ready to give me a few more copies.

As a visitor to Jeddah I went around the Old city and found some fascinating architecture. I think Jeddah has a traditional architectural language which the local authority should insist on the upcoming new buildings. We need new building but not at the cost of the “Arcology” (Architecture+ Ecology).

You will agree with me that the recent devastation in Jeddah due to heavy downpour is a signal for what we have been doing to nature and it is high time that the cities like Jeddah take note of both “Architecture and Ecology”. Architecture I mean not just building buildings but to create manifestations of Culture and Heritage which the disciplined society needs as reference points. I am sure your magazine will take this message across to the people who feel that this identity is essential for future generations.Jaffer AA Khan RIBA

When once a man had something...Now he has almost nothing. He lives with his wife, six children - and thousands of other families - in the Haitian capital’s central plaza, the Champs de Mars. They cook meals on the sidewalk and hang clothes to dry on the gates of the crumbled presidential palace. Their only shade comes from a green umbrella. This is how it is now in Haiti, help them!

Dear EnasCongratulations on your excellent editorial and the coverage of the “flood” in the new edition of your magazine. “Ordinary” people suffer things we don’t even know about, but we all share a common humanity. I was very shocked by this – I have put “flood” in inverted commas, as it was in reality a heavy rainstorm, and to lose so many people in this case was nothing short of criminal. God bless HM King Abdullah (Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques) for taking it so seriously.John

Thumbs up to... Al-Baik For their constant

efforts to social and community services that are always geared

towards improving our everyday lives. During the Jeddah floods which shook Jeddah to its very foundations, Al-Baik was there to provide families with warm meals after the first day of damage. Al-Baik CEO, Rami Abu Ghazaleh was also on site to supervise the operations. What was more impressive is that Al-Baik did this genuinely without advertising their goodwill. Few other organizations were able to react so quickly but Al-Baik was there to help the people in need. Previously Al-Baik launched the Nazeeh & Wartan campaign which aimed to increase awareness about environmental responsibility. In the initial campaign in 2005, more than 300,000 participants signed a pledge to confirm their support for anti-littering, while over 1100 people participated in the clean-up activities.

Thumbs down to... STC This month we give a big thumbs down to STC. The nations largest telecom company is also the one with largest problems from a customer service point of view. STC has been experiencing severe glitches causing customers to get bills for three months at a time, even when some had been paid. What is more disappointing is that STC never offered a real answer to its customers who had to endure painfully inefficient customer service centers. They should not make their customers suffer for a server glitch and not hold themselves accountable for mistakes they could have easily remedied with a public apology. In the past STC used to provide quality service to its customers and we hope they will revive their old standards soon.

Calling all Ex-pats in Jeddah...

You’ve done it! You finally took the plunge, said goodbye to your Western surroundings and made the move to Jeddah. You did all the hard work involved in relocating to a new country...you even made it through the tiresome visa process! Hurray! You think the hard part is over, right? Sorry to be the one to break it to you, but WRONG! Now that you’re here in Jeddah, there are countless things you need to do, from attaining your Iqama to getting a Saudi driving licence and hiring a car (this bit’s for the men!). So, now what? We at Destination Jeddah know the difficulties faced by ex-pats, and are here to lend you a helping hand. Not only will you find our magazine packed with useful information, guides, restaurant reviews and handy maps, we are going to take it a step further by providing you with easy, no-nonsense ways to complete your transition to Jeddah and settle in as quickly as possible.

Moving to a new land is nerve wracking to say the least and you’re caught up in the preparations to leave your home land; getting certificates legalized; packing up your belongings; getting vaccinated against every disease going – and more; visiting the Saudi embassy more times than you care to remember; booking flights; booking travel insurance; getting medical cover...and the list goes on and on. Your board your flight, finally arrive at Jeddah International Airport

and as you walk out into the 30 degree temperatures and look around you at the never-ending row of taxi drivers, gazing at you with a glint of hope that you might board their taxi and... ..BAM! It hits you like a ten tonne articulated lorry going at 150km/hr on Medina road...this is Jeddah. This is what all your preparations have been for. This is the place you sought out all those months ago. This is your new home.

Get your Iqama!

The importance of this cannot be stressed enough. If you are going to rent an unfurnished apartment, you will be asked for it. If you want to open up a bank account, you will be asked for it. If you want to get a phone line, you will be asked for it. Do you get the picture?

The process for getting an iqama is fairly straightforward. You will need:

- About 6 – 8 personal photographs. These need to be a particular size, passport sized photographs will not be accepted. If you go to any photo studio in Jeddah and ask for photos for your Iqama, they will know what you are talking about. It will cost you about SR20

- Medical Exam. Although you will have had extensive medical tests done in your home country as part of your visa process, they will not be accepted when it comes to your Iqama. Most polyclinics in Jeddah provide this service and it costs around SR70. You will need to take along a passport sized photograph

- You will need to obtain an Iqama application form from your employer, which needs to be completed, stamped and signed by your manager

- An Iqama processing fee of approximately SR520 is required

When you have all of the above, take them to your employer who will then get them processed for you.

Accomodation

Now that you have your Iqama, you can stop living out of your suitcase and finally get a place to live! If you are here on a work visa, your employers might have already provided you with accommodation. If they haven’t, then you have a choice between a furnished apartment, an unfurnished apartment and a compound. Furnished apartments tend to be quite expensive, although they are very convenient as you can move straight in.

The most popular ones include:

Abu Zaid furnished apartments, Al-Sitteen Street, +966-2-6633332

Al Dana furnished apartments,Macarona Street, +966-2-6701112

Abu Diyab furnished apartments, Tahlia Street, +966-2-611733

If you opt for an unfurnished apartment, be warned that when they say unfurnished – they mean completely bare. You will need to buy everything, from air conditioning units to a cooker. Depending on the area you’re looking at, you can get a 3 roomed apartment for around SR20,000/annum. The best way to source an unfurnished apartment is through word of mouth. Ask around. Alternatively, you can ask a taxi driver to drive you around a district that you like, and look around for signs of availability of apartments in buildings (tip: If you see from the outside that an apartment that does not have air conditioning units installed, this is a very good indication that the apartment is available!)

Page 12: DJ Issue 13

If you’re going to go for a compound, which many ex-pats do, there are a number available. The drawback is that you will live in surroundings which are quite westernised, so you might not get a real feel of living in Jeddah. The upside is that you will be living amongst other ex-pats, and can share your experiences. A few include:

Garden City Compound, Junction of Medina road and Falasteen Road, +966-2-6607590

Shaker Village Compound, Prince Sultan Street, +966-2-6941129 ext 401

Al-Aoun Village, Sitteen Street, +966-2-6833909 ext 229

For more compounds please refer to General Directory.

Bank accountA bank account is essential whatever situation you’re in. To open one, pop along to the branch of your choice and fill out an application form (which will be in English). You will need to provide a copy of your employment contract, a letter from your employer to say that you work there, and a copy of your iqama. You will also need to provide a PO box so that your correspondence can be sent there. Provided that you do all of this, you will be able to open your bank account on the same day.

PO Box

You can go to your local branch of the Saudi Post and obtain a PO box. This costs about SR100 for the year and is very useful, as Jeddah does not have a postal system similar to the UK or US. The only way to get your post is to go to the post office and check your PO box at regular intervals

Saudi driving licence

If you are male, already have a driving licence from your home country, and would like to get a Saudi driving licence, you will require:

- 4 passport size photos

- Your original driving licence from your home country

- A copy of your passport

- A copy of your Iqama (If your Iqama is dependent on another person, e.g your wife, you will require a copy of their iqama too)

- Knowledge of your blood type

- Around SR650

DESTINATION JEDDAH10

Procedure:

Go to the driving school on Dallah street, and go towards the back entrance where you will find a cabin. Here, you pay SR450 and fill out an application form.

- Enter the building, and from the relevant counter, get your licence translated into Arabic. This will cost you around SR70.

- Get a medical check done, which basically comprises of a sight test. The relevant location will be signposted within the building.

- Go and book yourself in for a practical driving test, which you will do on the same day. After successfully completing that, you will need to go and book your theory test, which you will also do on the same day. You might need to pay around SR100 for the tests.

- Upon successful completion of the above, you will be required to return after 2 days to collect your driving licence.

Rent a carRenting a car is very easy in Jeddah, and you will find most car rental shops on Falasteen Road. Firstly, set a budget in mind, and try to find a car that will suit your budget. On average, the costs are as follows:

Chevrolet Aveo (manual) costs SR1800/month

Toyota Corolla (automatic) costs SR2500/month

Chevrolet Caprice (automatic) SR5000/month

Large GMC (automatic) starts at SR500/day

For car rental agencies, look them up in our General Directory, page 90.

Fuel here is very cheap, costing less than SR0.45/litre. And most fuel garages give you a free bottle of water or box of tissues for every SR10! Can it get any better?!

That should be enough to get you started. In future editions, we will tell you about the cheapest markets for furniture, the best places to buy air conditioning units from, where to buy kitchenware from and much much more!

EO: Building bridges through entrepreneurship

This month 130 entrepreneurs from around the world descended on Jeddah to have an “entre-spiritual experience,” said Samer Kurdi, organizer and representative of the Entrepreneurship Organization in Saudi Arabia.

These entrepreneurs came from different fields and have different aims for coming to Saudi but the aim of the trip Kurdi said was to come and see “the good the bad and the ugly (and) decide for themselves whether what they see here is the same as what they see on TV in their countries.” From Medain Saleh to the Aramco oil fields the EO members were given a little taste of Saudi Arabia. Dressed in a dark grey thobe with a matching vest he said with a smile, “I have no doubt that they’ll say its 100 times better thn what they expected compared to what they’ve been bombarded with for god knows how many years.”

Graphic Designer and entrepreneur Jamie Douraghy said the trip was important both

from a social point of view as well as an economic point of view. “There’s the political world and there’s the business world and its commerce that really pulls the world together.”

His brother, Bejan Douraghy said the perception of the Kingdom is a case of projected reality by the Western media. “What the reality is, is what we’ve experienced, and the spirit of entrepreneurship is nothing of what is depicted,” he said. “There’s a spirit of fear, but here there isn’t. It’s about relationships, it’s about people and it’s about humanity and thats what we’ve experienced.”As an added bonus the guests were given the chance of having personalized thobes

made for them by the Saudi designer Sara Bin Hejela, Kurdi said it was part of making the trip more personal and genuine. “We told them ‘listen, if you want to come to Saudi you can’t ignore the social aspect, the social aspect is as important as the business aspect, you cannot do business without the social side,” Kurdi said.

On their last night in Jeddah the EO members were treated to a sample of local talent, from comedian Rami Salameh and Jeddah Legends rapper Qusai; aka Don Kamelion.

“Thats one side of (the trip) but on the other side its a chance for Saudi entrepreneurs to mingle and interact and learn from experiences of over 100 different countries,” Kurdi said. “That shared experience will definitely enrich them there’s no doubt about it.”

“This vital group of emerging growth companies provides the oxygen of the economy. The winners of the Saudi Fast Growth 100 list will be the guides to our future,” said Amr Al-Dabbah, SAGIA’s governor in a press statement.

“These trail-blazers will be the most potent signal that Saudi Arabia is a dynamic economy full of creativity and opportunity,” he said.

A survey of Saudi Fast Growth 100 CEOs outlined a picture of business dynamism and CEO optimism. In the five-years surveyed from, 2004 - 2008, 45 Saudi Fast Growth 100 companies created more than 28,000 jobs since their founding, with 15,000 jobs created in the last five years. The companies grew at a 41 percent average compound annual growth rate, with revenues ranging from SR4 million to SR1 billion.

Interestingly enough the average age of these entrepreneurs at start-up was 33-years and many have continued to found other companies which are still in operation. Of the 15 industries represented many focused in technology and the telecommunication industries followed closely by Health and Education, Public Relations, Media and Publishing and construction and engineering. The highest concentration of companies is in High Tech and Telecommunications followed by Health & Education, Public Relations, Media & Publishing, and Construction & Engineering.

Analysts have said the industries represented a culture of entrepreneurs seeking out opportunities unrepresented in the market.

A majority of the entrepreneurs have started more than one company and many plan to establish another in the next two years.

Saudi Fast Growth 100: Jeddah home to entrepreneur boomtown

Recognizing everything from start-ups, companies founded by entrepreneurs, male and female who are young and aggressive, the Saudi Fast Growth 100 released its list of entrepreneurs who form the future of business in the Kingdom. Picked from over 500 companies, 100 were selected and presented at the SAGIA Fourth Annual Global Competitiveness Forum in Riyadh with close to 40 percent based in Jeddah.

SEATBELT STUDY FINDS CHILD SEATS INCREASE SURVIVAL ODDS IN CRASH:As part of its awareness raising efforts, SAFRA Academy For Safe Driving has teamed up with a group of Saudi companies to educate car drivers and passengers about the importance of using child and infant safety seats to protect children in case of impact or sudden stop. Simultaneously, professionals have said that incorrectly fastening a child’s safety seat can lead to serious injuries and may even be fatal in case of an accident. Children that are seated in, and attached properly, to a safety seat placed on top of the car seat can help avoid serious injury when in a road accident.

Although steeped in history, little is known locally of the town of Hadda except that you pass through it on the way to Taif via the Sail Road. It was on such a trip that the town first came to our attention. The Hada Escarpment road was closed due to expansion so our only alternative route was the northern Makkah bypass. Driving through the small town with its small shops and factories, something caught my eye. Something so out of place that I first thought I must have been mistaken. Standing in the middle of an open area off the road was a strange mausoleum type structure, very out of place in Saudi Arabia. We veered off the road to explore a little and came to a beautifully built well and watering trough. Although the well was dry we were quite surprised that the building was intact and was in decent condition. Another similar structure could be seen next to some animal pens nearby. As it was getting late, we headed back to Jeddah with the promise to do some research and visit the site again soon.

Page 26: DJ Issue 13

DESTINATION JEDDAH24

Hadda was a major stopping point for cara-vans between Makkah and Jeddah due to the availability of abundant water, and was the site of the Hadda Agreement between the British and King AbdulAziz in 1925 which outlined the borders between Jordan and Najd. With the increase of Hajj pilgrims and goods arriving at the port of Jeddah by boat, the short caravan route between Jeddah and Makkah had become more important leading to more services and protection.

On visiting the area again, we were sur-prised to find two types of historic wells in the area, the two 15th century wells we saw on our earlier trip, possibly built in the time of Turkish Ottoman Empire based on the architecture and four AlSaud Era wells, all considered Sabeels, which are wells built for charity. Two of the AlSaud wells have inscriptions stating that they were built by King Abdul Aziz in 1942/1361H. One of the wells can be found after the Makkah check-point right at the boundary of Makkah but falls in the “Muslim Only” area but is simi-lar to the two near Hadda. The last well can be found as you leave the town of Bahrah about one kilometer to your right. The area also includes a ruined mosque surrounded by a fence. Although no information has been found on its history, the architecture seems to point to Turkish origins restored in early AlSaud times. The wells and Mosque are easily accessible from Jeddah and involve only a small amount of two wheel drive offloading.

To reach Hadda, take the Bahrah exit when leaving Jeddah towards Makkah. At the old Makkah road take a right and continue until the road forks. Continue to the right to see the AlSaud wells to your right or continue following the road to the left towards Al-Jamoum and Talf and you will see the Turk-ish wells on your right. The old Mosque is located between both locations and is visible from the Turkish wells.

history, Lebanon’s political spirit has never faded giving Saleh ample material to document.

Beirut has a history of being a city of “endless cycle of civil strife,” she said in the introduction to the book. In an E-mail interview Saleh explains how the same scars from conflict have morphed to create a different kind of struggle. One that takes center stage on the walls and buildings of city streets branding the city and the people who live in and around these symbols. “The graphics in the book represent this war and civil strife from the point of view of art. The graphics re emphasize the split and political stronghold within the city. At the point of my documentation (2005-2008) the political situation in Lebanon was extremely unstable, and the graphics in the book represent this instability,” she said. “But I don’t think its so much a graphic war, rather a call for recognition and a way to represent the ongoing existence of these political parties and their areas.”

The book spans the graffiti and street art visible in Beirut from 2005-2009, consisting mostly of political imagery and slogans. At the peak of the Israel/Lebanon conflict

in 2006 graffiti was a popular medium for expression. Arofish, is one artist in particular who was more prominent in his designs where he “commented on the deaths of the war, immortalized those who had passed away as martyrs through his stencils as well as kept in memory the children who died due to the attacks in south Lebanon by relating the situation in the south to that of Palestine,” Saleh said.

Within the book several pages are reserved for stencils of political logos but mostly to bring the reader an ownership of graffiti self-expression. “The stencils in the book are part of the interactivity of the concept behind the book, allowing readers, whether they are in Jeddah or anywhere else to experience the process of making stencils and spraying them and re using them. If the stencils in this book encourage the people of artists of Jeddah to crate their own, the book is successful in its message of encouraging self-expression. I hope that any reader of this book is taken on a journey through its pages as well as inspired to express and create on their own, whether they make stencils or find that hidden artist inside them.”

Like in Jeddah street art in Beirut has been a recent trend and is done by a few select artists Saleh said. With stenciled logos and slogans forming the bulk of the political expressionism representing the civil strife, covering Beirut’s walls. “All together they represent how the civil strife and political division has led to a younger generation asking for unity and peace, and one Lebanon.”

Tala Saleh

Given how communities, both religious and political, are intertwined in the cities narrow streets many of the neighborhoods have clear political or religious affiliations. “The political party symbols mark the territory of specific areas and there is no disrespect or trespassing in those areas by other parties that don’t ‘belong’ there. Its sort of like an unspoken understanding and respect of territory between the parties.”

A: Hip-hop is a culture, an art. In my songs I talk about stuff that relates to our culture. There always has to be a message in hip-hop because it’s an expression towards what you’re exposed to in life. And people have to relate to what you’re saying. In “the Job” for example, my message is addressed to the youth and to the parents as well. Fathers need to be more supportive with their sons and businessmen need to be more encouraging with ambitious graduates.

Experimental Edutainment: Don Legend’s Second album hits the shelves

By Serene FeteihAfter the success of his first album “Don Legend the Kamelion,” Saudi rapper Qusai aka Don Legend, has recently launched his second album “Experimental Edutainment.” Keeping up with traditional Saudi issues and rhythm in his songs, Qusai’s familiar tone is back in “The Job.”Q: Your new album has strong social messages. How do you think this can help in solving some of the social issues the youth struggle with nowadays?

DESTINATION JEDDAH28

Page 31: DJ Issue 13

Experimental Edutainment is available at Virgin Megastore, Roshana Mall.

Q: Everyone has highlights throughout their career. What are the most memorable for you?

A: Creating Jeddah Legends back in December 2006. When I was holding a pen and about to sign a record deal is one of the best moments in my life. Also, the day my father called me over the telephone to tell me how proud of me he was. This meant the world to me. I’ve had his blessing all along but to hear him say it and mean it is another feeling. I’ve had many blessings, and if my father taught me one thing, it’s important to always remain humble.

Q: How have you managed to gain an audience of three different generations in a society where western music is taboo (for a Saudi singer)?

A: I make sure that my music and video clips are appealing. I have a variety of rhythms in my new album; some are mixed arabic and English, some are just in English and some are in Arabic keeping Hejazi music in most songs because it’s our identity. What grabs the fans’ attention is not just my music, it’s the lyrics, the words I say. Some fans come up to me and express how much they loved a certain song (because they managed to read between the lines) they understood my message.

Q: It must be frustrating not being able to perform in your own hometown. Has this affected your bond with your Saudi fans?

A: It is disappointing. I’ve performed in Dubai, Egypt, Lebenon...but when it comes to Jeddah, every single event has been shut down in the last minute. It’s frustrating and disappointing. So I make the best out of what I can. I find other ways to bond with my fans such as CD signings. And our studio is open for visitors too.

Q: What’s your mission and future plans?

A: My mission is not fame. It’s making history. I want to create leaders. I want them to take this legacy and continue with it. As for my future plans, I want to expand Jeddah Legends and capitalize on the name in other Arab countries and do international tours with other bands whether local or international. I’d also like to start another TV show with my co-host Fredrick. But you never know, those are my plans but I want to see what 2010 has to offer.

Q: What inspires your songs and lyrics?

A: Life itself and what it has to offer. Everyday life issues inspire me to write and produce.

ATHR has participated in Art Dubai 2009, Edge of Arabia in London 2008 & Venice Biennale 2009.

* Concept & Artists

Creating a brilliant reflection of Arab culture, Hamad & Ali’s recent work shows a stylistic split from the familiar and into a more explorative genre. The pop-art themes which have garnered the artist their early fame are now approached with a new aware-ness and delightfully gaudy boldness. The colour palate trimmed, the subject matter sincere, the newest installments have a story to tell. Saudi Arabian artist Bassem Al-Sharqi’s work explodes in a flood of colours. Al-Sharqi’s art reflects the vintage style of Pop Art through a mixture of media to create novel iconic symbols that represent a new generation of Arabs. Explains Al-Sharqi, “These images are universal; their subjects are more a part of my heritage than the dalla (traditional teapot) which is considered to be a symbol of Saudi culture.”

At the forefront of the Kingdom’s retail scene are three stores - Sid, Life and Studio1. These three seemingly different venues have an important common factor. Any guesses? All have introduced a fresh outlook on fashion, whether it be apparel, home furnishings, or an entire lifestyle to the Kingdom. All are immensely popular with those in Jeddah and Riyadh who are in the know. All are owned by Al-Amna Group. Finally, all have two extraordinary individuals as part of the team at the helm – Yasmeen Al-Sudairy and Reem Abbar.

The beginning of this business relationship started with the opening of Life in 2003. Life began as the brainchild of Al-Anoud Al-Sudairy, Yasmeen Al-Sudairy’s elder sister and longtime friend of Abbar. It’s inception began in an unlikely place – a business plan for a gadget/home accessories store written as a graduation project by Al-Anoud. The girls’ mother, an entrepreneur in her own right with Studio 1 (which also opened in 2003), was so impressed that she immediately began drawing up plans to bring what started off as a simple school project to reality. Life became so successful that a second branch was opened in Riyadh as well as a mono-brand Paul Frank store in Jeddah based on it’s success in Life. Both women bring very unique skill-sets to their partnership. Al-Sudairy, an art major, becomes the most animated when discussing her admiration for craftsmanship of a well-made piece and the technical aspects behind it. Abbar, who graduated from the London College of Fashion as a fashion management major, is the self-confessed fashion-addict. “Reem adores fashion. She really knows how to put pieces together creatively while keeping up with the current season’s trends. I really admire her for it.” Al-Sudairy said of her long time friend and business partner. In the midst of their success, both women, while exceedingly eloquent and knowledgeable about their respective roles within the organization and their target markets, have maintained a very appealing modesty. “There are many boutiques like ours in Jeddah. Dado, Lo Spazio, Mayass, especially Al-Mayass which was kind of Sid

for our mothers. Our marketing style has been what made us unique.” Both women perform extensive research botxh regarding the individual brands towards the customer target and purchase and sell accordingly. Take for example, Life and Sid. Life’s lines of home accessories, gadgets, publications and apparel appeal to the quirky creative youth who above all wants to be an individual. Abbar summed Life it up perfectly, “it’s not what you need, it’s what you want!” Sid, in contrast, is Life’s older more elegant sister, which speaks to luxury and maturity in terms of fashion. Both stores are very different and yet both speak to a very specific customer. Through diligent work and a strong sense of entrepreneurial spirit, Yasmeen Al-Sudairy, Reem Abbar and their families have not only managed to make their stores reach the forefront of the Kingdom’s highly competitive retail market, but to do it with style.

Dania Al-SayedAs a 2008 Graphic Design graduate from Dar Al-Hekma College, Dania Al-Sayed said she was always fascinated with the world of fashion, beauty and jewelry. She started her career in design with a local advertising firm in Jeddah where she has been for a year.

She said that her initial interest in abaya design was something she fell into and was not planned. “Initially, I developed my interest by coming up with my own unique designs for myself and sometimes for others on random occasions such as birthdays,” Al-Sayed said. “As I became more engaged in the process with several unique designs, I envisioned an opportunity for meaningful work existing by presenting customers with the experience of a lovely abaya.”

She also design different things like rings which she said has always been of great interest to her.“Embarking on a graphic design journey in my college years with multiple opportunities and challenges, I felt the need to share my creativity with my customers through jewelry. The “double” ring was the ideal image for what I had in mind,” she said.

She also plans to branch out into necklaces and bracelets in the future. Using varying scripts of calligraphy from Diwaniya to Riqa to Nash she customizes her designs to what her customers want crafting them to their “wants, needs, and tastes.” At the end of the day Al-Sayed wants to give her customers a unique experience and takes the utmost care of her creations wrapping them in cloth to keep them safe from damage while being transported.

Moonrays Rock Spotlight with Key Hider - SR93Extra bright. Extra smart. The Moonrays Rock Spotlight with Key Hider triples as a stylish yard accent, a bright night light, and a covert key-hiding spot. As a yard decoration, it’s crafted from durable polyresin to last for years and to duplicate the look of real rock. Four LEDs are included to

ensure extra brightness, meaning kids get home safely and intruders are scared away. And here’s the tricky part - turn it over to find a sneaky way to hide keys for the house-watcher. What more could you possibly ask for in a

spotlight? NiCD batteries included. Available at outdoorlightingplus.com

RCA Airnery - SR150I hate a dead battery as much as the next person, but imagine if you didn’t have to lug around that annoying charger. Thankfully some computer manufacturers (especially ones who have white accessories) have kept consumers in mind by making them smaller and more practical. But during one of my many procrastination sessions at my computer I came across this little marvel. Imagine charging your battery on your phone or your laptop using…wait for it….Wifi signals. No this isn’t a joke or some sci-fi dream. RCA claimed at the Consumer Electronics Show that they have a device which can do just that: take Wifi energy and convert it

to battery power. At the CES, RCA claimed to have charged a Blackberry from one-third to fully charged in

roughly 90 minutes. Don’t take my word for it check out gizmag.com, search for RCA Airnery and

see for yourself. Not yet available

Coral: Foundation of life and the seas

Despite the variety and colorful diorama of life in the sea; from the dreaded jellyfish to the shell scraping parrotfish, none of this would be possible without the coral reefs we enjoy so much in Jeddah. The fact of the matter is that corals themselves form the basis of life in the seas and oceans. Without them، the aquatic show we so enjoy would have no performers. Consequently, humanity wouldn’t survive very long without an ocean of fish.

By Hans Sjoeholm

Corals provide shelter for other creatures; 25 percent of all marine species and act as a nursery as well as hosting the biodiversity of life in the oceans. Yet coral reefs cover less than 0.2 percent of the oceans.

Most novice divers and snorkelers see the scleredian (hard) corals as static and merely as background to the seas. Their role goes largely unrecognized and uncredited. Corals in actuality are a nursery for juvenile fish, a natural water-filter, a sub-sea protector against wave damage to shorelines, a huge carbon sink (source absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere) and a producer of oxygen.Like many natural wonders on our world,

corals are under attack and abused from acidification, overfishing, pollution, sedi-mentation, ozone depletion and numerous other types of stress. We continue this destructive pattern and never seem to realize the risks.

The hard rocks most know as coral are a deposit left behind by a miniscule sea organ-ism, polyps. Alone they form less

Page 52: DJ Issue 13

DESTINATION JEDDAH50

Corals grow at a painfully slow pace growing milimeters every decade.

Even the lightest touch can damage corals let alone sea-bound vandals who carve into corals.

Without their symbiotic algae, coral tissues become colorless as they reveal the white of their calcium carbonate skeletons, an event known as coral bleaching.

than a drop of water in the ocean. But when trillions combine in one location they form coral reefs and one of the largest animal colonies on the planet.

These same polyps form a mutually benefi-cial relationship with algae which colors the reef and provides nutrients to polyps through photosynthesis. The polyps in turn deposit calcium carbonate which forms what we see as corals today and in turn provides shelter for thousands of species of fish. If either of these organisms is damaged, the other dies and the reef stops forming.

Despite their size and expansive reach across the world, reef building is a pain-fully slow process. Those large brain corals you see when you dive deep down the coral walls at your local beach, once started from a miniscule speck and only grow millimeters a year. Even basic estimates show that the great mountain corals were here thousands of years before our grandfathers were even born and hopefully will last a few more generations.

Cnidarians (corals, soft-corals, sea anemo-nes, gorgonians etc) are the most well-known organisms containing symbiotic zooxanthellae, but they are also found in other invertebrates such as the Giant Clams (Tridacna) and many nudibranchs.

The zooxanthellae (algae) live in a symbi-otic relationship with these immobile living creatures, the hard corals, this vital algae helps keep these invertebrates alive and can provide up to 90 percent of a coral’s energy requirement.

In return, the coral provides the zooxanthel-lae with protection, shelter, nutrients and a constant supply of carbon dioxide required for photosynthesis. Reef-building corals largely depend on zooxanthellae limiting the coral growth to the photic zone (light zone); most reefs grow in water 30 m or shallower.

Corals provide shelter for other creatures; 25 percent of all marine species live in or around coral reefs; they host the greatest diversity of life in the ocean. They provide nursery grounds for 25 percent of known marine species but coral reefs cover less than 0.2 percent in area of the marine envi-ronment. It is a very concentrated resource

indeed and therefore the slightest damage has a disproportionately large impact on the coral.

Coral Surival 101

Corals need clean water to survive. A major threat is sedimentation, waste and storm water. Trash will block the sunlight reaching the corals causing starvation and suffocation.Under high environmental stress, coral will also die if the water temperature changes by more than a degree or two beyond its normal range or if the salinity of the water drops. If any of the two of these conditions occur, thezooxanthellae contained inside the coral willbe expelled or digested by the coral leaving

behind the white calcium carbonate giving the coral a white appearance, also known as coral bleaching.

Without their symbiotic algae, coral tissues become colorless as they reveal the white of their calcium carbonate skeletons, an event known as coral bleaching.

The increased atmospheric carbon dioxide has lowered the ocean›s pH value (acidity) in a process known as ocean acidification. Lowered pH reduces the ability of corals to produce calcium carbonate and in ex-

treme situations can entirely dissolve those skeletons. Without deep and immediate cuts in anthropogenic CO2, many scientists fear that ocean acidification will result in the severe degradation or destruction of coral species and ecosystems.

How Corals Die “In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, we will understand only what we are taught” Senegalese environmentalist Baba Dieum, 1965.

Physical damage to reef architecture comes from impact by propellers and anchors that can break apart and crush coral, destroying years, if not decades, of coral growth. Negligent and poorly informed divers also harm corals by touching and standing on them. Even if a coral is not visibly harmed, even the lightest touch from hands or equip-ment human touch can make them more vulnerable to death and disease.

Larger debris, coming from both the land and the sea, can break apart coral and strangle and suffocate marine life. Plastics are an especially large threat, as they

DESTINATION JEDDAH 51

Little Bluegreen chromis (Chromis viridis) float near an Acropora coral which they use as shelter from predators.

Cup corals (Tubastrea coccinea) lacks the symbiotic Zooxanthallae and feed at night by catching zooplankton with their stinging tentacles.

Ghost nets abandoned from illegal fishing operations droop down on corals covering and cutting them off from their food supply consequently suffocating them and killing them.

often wrap around smaller branching coral entangle marine life and kill animals such as seagulls and turtles. As an example, the half-lives of disposable diapers is about 500 years, plastic bottles 450 years.

Why Does It Matter? All storm runoff water alters the chemical composition of near shore waters and causes increased turbidity and sedimentation. This is especially harmful to corals, as they only thrive in clean, clear nutrient rich waters.

If anyone needs a reason to take care of this vast natural resource apart from the fact that it provides a carbon sink and source of oxygen, many modern pharmaceuticals were developed from naturally occurring sub-stances from dwellers on reefs. Heart drugs, cancer-cure medicines, anesthetics and bone transplant materials are but a few. More than half new anti-cancer drug research is fo-cused on marine organisms. There are many more waiting to be discovered.

Apart from the invisible value of the reefs, tourism and fishing provide hard economic value. However، both have to be carefully monitored to maintain the wellbeing of the reefs or tourists will have nothing to see and there will quite simply be no fish. Reefs act as spawning grounds and nurseries for many species of pelagic (deepwater) fish that sus-tain the world fishing industry. No reef; no fish.

Ancient corals, such as those that under-lie Jeddah, have provided a rich source of building material. Mined for to make the characteristic cube shaped building stone used in Jeddah’s old town area, diverse cor-als and shells are clearly visible in the walls of old dwellings.

The sheer extent and diversity of marine species is mind-boggling. Currently, we know of about 1.5 million different species on our planet and scientists estimate that the oceans are likely to contain 100 mil-lion forms of life yet to be discovered. With some 60 percent of the world’s coral reefs seriously at risk from human activities, 33 percent of coral species are already listed as threatened on the IUCN Red list, it is likely that many species will disappear before they have been identified all with the potential to form part of possible cures to diseases like cancer and H1N1.

How can we help mitigate this problem?Plastics prevent sunlight to reach to the polyps and the will starve and die: Stop us-ing plastic bags. The Saudi Environmental Society organized a clean up in the desert in North Obhur during Earth day in April 2009. Four days of seminars and field trips encouraged people to begin use reusable bags for shopping, which would cure some of the ailments we imposed on the environ-ment. Ocean cleanups, bring up plastics and other trash from the sea bottom, but that is not the solution. We need to change our habits; start using garbage bins and not drop trash from car windows. Start to recycle, reuse and reduce. Divers should avoid contact with the ocean bottom, and only use the weight needed and practice proper buoyancy control. Lifeless areas may support new growth, if left undisturbed.

If you’ve never had manaeesh or man-ousha it is quite possibly one of the best traditional Arab snacks around. Sheikh Manqoush is probably one of the better places in town to find some.

What’s manaeesh? It is lightly tossed Ara-bic bread smeared in cheese. Then baked in an oven quickly on a wooden tray mak-ing the cheesy treat come out piping hot which is then sliced into four pieces.

The bread is so thick and the cheese so creamy that it tastes a bit like biting into a cloud with how fresh and fluffy the texture is right out of the oven.

Unfortunately the menu for the traditional food is all in Arabic and none of the staff speak English so bringing along an Arabic speaking friend is probably a good idea.

However there is an English menu with burger and sandwhiches but the manaeesh is by far the main reason you should stop by Sheikh Manqoush.

Steadily many restaurants in jeddah start to lose the flare they had when they open. Senses has suffered this same fate.

When it first opened it was the place to go and in a sense it still is a favorite of the Jeddah dining scene.

However some things do stick out which ruin an otherwise enjoyable place as well as the dining experience.

One common complaint is the music. Blasting music in a restaurant is never a good idea as it starts to grate on your nerves if it drowns out your own conversation from across the table.

Coupled with slow service, probably caused by a visibly understaffed team, it doesn’t add anything good to the experience.

To it’s credit Senses is not all bad though. We give them credit for having good soups, an enjoyable club sandwich as well as a really good paella.

The fondant also comes highly recommended by several people for its rich texture and its intense chocolate taste.

But even the most delicious food is never good enough when a place feels like a crowded night club.

Mirza Ghasemi is a traditional comfort food from the Caspian region area of Iran. It is most often enjoyed as a main course during lunch served over rice or with bread. The dish has grown in popular-ity since it is healthy.

PreparationMethod:1. Grill the eggplant evenly on all sides on a wire rack over fire (same like for babaganoush).2. Let it cool eggplant and then remove and discard the charred skin and chop the remaining. Flesh to a fine grain of approxi-mately 5 mm.3. Heat a frying pan and add 3 tbsp corn oil and then add the garlic, let all heat together until the garlic is bubbling but don’t let color. Add the chopped eggplant and now fry in the pan stirring often for 5 minutes.4. In another pan add the balance of the corn oil, heat and add the six eggs, stir lightly while frying. When the eggs are cooked add to the eggplant mix in the other pan. Mix thoroughly. 5. Now add the fresh chopped tomato, tumeric and seasoning and cook another 8-10 minutes. 6. Getaway for the weekend: Movenpick Yanbu’s oasis of luxury

TravelTrends

Page 75: DJ Issue 13

DESTINATION JEDDAH 73

Outside of the hustle of Jeddah’s busy streets and stressful traffic, sits a brand new 5-star resort on the Red Sea. A 3-hour drive northward will get you to the newly completed Movenpick in Yanbu.

Destination Jeddah was lucky enough to be able to get a chance to preview the place and see just what the newest 5-star hotel on the coast really was like. What we saw was the perfect getaway for stressed out Jeddahwis as well as soothing relaxation destination.

With a total of 201 rooms, it was first in-troduced with a soft opening in September 2009, it brings together a unique location, ingenious design as well as stunning views.

Located directly on the Red Sea, the hotel offers 141 rooms ranging from junior to royal suites, a dozen duplex villas as well as a range of individual apartments.

The hotel is unlike any other in the region, offering a true 5-star experience both in dining as well as in customer service.

“Our guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to recreation,” Habbab added. “To begin with, there’s our spectacular infinity or zero-edge pool overlooking the sea. We also have our own private, sandy beach, and a well-equipped marina where you can set off for a refreshing day of diving, fishing, snor-keling or just relaxing. In addition, we have a superbly-equipped gym and fitness center.”

The hotel’s unique design allows guests to both enjoy serene and colorful Red Sea sun-sets alongside maintaining privacy without sacrificing on any of these qualities. “With every imaginable comfort here, including an on-site bank, book shop, gift shop, sport and diving shop, travel agency, rental car service and barbershop, you really won’t want to leave,” Habbab added.

GO GREEN AND RECYCLE YOUR PHONE (a Nokia initiative)Nokia holds its first recycling awareness campaign Jan. 4 in collaboration with the residency of Meteorology and Environment. Nokia is launching the Take Back Program increase awareness on recycling old mobile devices and accessories.

Only 3 percent of people recycle their mobile phones despite the fact that we have old devices at home that are no longer used or want.

Care Manager for Nokia Saudi Arabia Hani Ghibeh said, “many people are simply unaware that these old and unused mobiles can be recycled. Most people don’t even know where or how to recycle their unwanted mobiles.”

“If each of the 3 billion people globally owning mobiles brought back just one unused device, it could save 240,000 tons of raw material” Ghibeh added.

Up to 80 percent of a Nokia device can be recycled to make new products such as kitchen kettles, park benches and even musical instruments.

Today, consumers can drop off their old and unwanted devices, chargers and accessories in the recycling bins available at the Nokia Care Centers. To find the nearest take back point, please visit http://www.nokia.com.sa/find-a-store

Both are mothers and housewives filled with the busy schedule that consumes every mother. Twice a week they would meet with other mothers to discuss books and other topics.

“After 8 years we came to the realization that we should start widening our circle of influence,” Abdulkhair said. “After brainstorming about important issues in our community we decided we wanted to focus on the environment.”

Alim admits that the work is not easy and that it is a full-time job, “but seeing the change is what keeps me going.”

One of the biggest successes for Al-Nabta was its workshop “The Smart Shopper” geared towards teaching consumer to be smarter about their purchases.

Set up as a mini market in school or event the workshop aimed at making children flip over products to see what it contains in order for them to become responsible about what they are ingesting.

Al-Nabta also aims to teach children to be more environmentally conscious at the same time by educating them about the dangers of using non-ozone friendly aerosol sprays

It is no secret that most of the damage to the environment comes from our behavior. Few people take responsibility and try and make a difference to change old habits. Sawsan Alim and Anwaar Abulkhair saw this and did what they could to change this mentality by establishing Al-Nabta in 2005.

and dropping plastic outdoors. The children are taught by using environmentally friendly items.

One of their new programs is the “Our Environment, Our World” program to be launched in local elementary schools during extra-curricular periods will teach children that every action they take will have an effect on their immediate environment.

“Our programs are all interactive, hands-on workshops,” explains Alim. “This enables children (to have a) a better understanding of the concepts addressed, (therefore) having a more powerful impact.”

Muath Aldabbagh recently joined Al-Nabta as the marketing director and said “The biggest reward as a volunteer is seeing the change and effect on the children after our workshops.

Parents are happy and that’s worth all our effort. We are now seeking to get more support from the private sector to continue with our curriculum and expansion,” Al-Dabbagh said.

Saudi Writer & a Green Hero Lana Sultan, 30, has turned her life around by going green. “It all started when I stayed in Vancouver for 45 days,” Sultan said. “While there I got into the habit of using canvas shopping bags, reusable water bottles and buying organic food.”

After returning to Saudi she continued the habit and felt it was a part of her life that eventually rubbed off on her husband, son and even the housekeeper. “One day when my 6-year-old son and I were out shopping, he told the cashier we don’t need a bag, my mommy will put it in her bag. It suddenly hit me that a child this young can understand this concept.” Lana decided to write her very first children’s book. “The Amazing Adventures of Eco Boy” is a story of a boy who becomes a green superhero. Saddened by the garbage all around him, Eco Boy transforms his town to save his beloved planet earth by using the three R’s (reduce,

reuse and recycle). The is geared is to spread awareness about living a greener life amongst kids in order to engrain certain positive habits at a very young age. Sultan wanted to introduce the phenomena of superheroes to relate to little kids and make the reading both beneficial and exciting. Sultan elected to go with children instead of teenagers because once concepts and practices are engrained at such a young age, it becomes part of their everyday life. The book also attempts to promote reading in our communities to create a well-read generation.

For people new to a green lifestyle she recommends babysteps. Each household should try to adopt a new habit once a month like buying a blue paper recycling bin is the easiest first step. It should be accesible to the entire house. Once it is full of used paper, you can take it to a paper recycling company. Another idea is to switch to re-usable canvas bags for your shopping which are sold almost everywhere now.

Sultan will have a book signing from Feb. 10 at Little Book, Roshana Mall, Tahlia, 6.30 PM and Feb. 11 at My Library, Rawda st., 11 AM. The book will be available in Little Book stores. The book is printed on FSC certified paper from mixed resources. (FSC is the mark of responsible forestry). How greener could it get?For more information visit www.ecoboybooks.com

Useful Arabic Words& Pronunciation

It’s known worldwide that pronunciation is one of the most challenging steps in learning different languages. For example, Arabic has many dialogues, slangs and accents. Some of these dialogues can’t be understood by all Arabs. The most common dialogue is the Egyptian dialogue and the Lebanese dialogue. In this article we will try to show our reader some of the Traditional Saudi dialogue. To illustrate that, we added a picture of a throat to show the pronunciation of different Arabic Letters.

Ocial directions of how to best utilize

To enjoy DJ to its fullest, here are some suggestions for locations to keep and carry a copy of the magazine:

At Home:Have DJ help you during awkward pauses when you have guests over or over the phone. Refer to DJ for conversational topics and interesting tid-bits about events and announcements in town. Shake well before use

In The Oce:Lost all the menus for places that deliver? Pick up DJ and use its handy directory for everything delicious that can be brought to you. Flip through the Red Sea Coast section and nd your next diving trip to make the strangers in your oce a little less strange.Store in cool space

In the Car:Tired of driving while everyone in your car ghts to decide where to eat? Keep it tucked away in your backseat as your reference on the go of where to get your food x.Shake twice before opening

In your Handbag/briefcase:Its small, its handy and its soft to the touch. Thanks to the invention of paper you can carry DJ wherever you go, stuck at the dentists? Pull out some DJ. Stuck outside during prayer time? Find out what other people are doing while you’re stuck with DJ. Waiting for rescue in the middle of nowhere cause you didn’t read DJ’s quick tips on how to have a safe desert outing? Read DJ until the helicopters arrive. This side up

Under your pillow:EEver wake up in the middle of the night craving some Taa-meya? Odds are the shops probably closed, or it will be once you get out of your pj’s, but you can highlight the number for the place for use rst thing in the morning.

Some (but not all) Distrubution Points:

WARNING: Side eects of DJ include: Activities, a desire to go out, a need to go diving, the inexplicable urge to go to tucked away restaurants.

If symptoms do not occur consult your doctor.
