Cart/Stand Assembly1If you will be using the optional Cart/Stand, assemble it before at-tempting to install your light. The cart/stand is packed in a large square carton.

1.1 Base AssemblyOpen stand carton by carefully cut-ting the tape around the perimeter.

Remove the vertical section and top shelf and set aside.

Using a pair of scissors, carefully remove the wrapping from the five-spoke base. Alternately, remove the casters and slide the wrapping off each spoke, then reinstall casters.

Set base on floor, casters down. Flip the caster locks down to lock the casters so the base does not roll.

Unpacking Light Mounting to Stand2

2.1 Unpacking your light.Your DayLight 5K2 is packed in protective foam. Be sure to keep your shipping carton and foam packing; it will be needed should your light ever require servicing.

2.2 Attaching light.Remove the light assembly from the packaging. Prior to operat-ing, your light must be attached to the top shelf of the stand or to a suitable flat, secure surface. Open the clamp by turning the knob counterclockwise until it clears the surface to which you want it attached. Tighten the clamp to the mounting surface by turning the knob clockwise.

2.3 Power connection.Your DayLight 5K2 operates at 100-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz, allowing its use virtually anywhere in the world. If you are outside North America, you may need a plug adapter to make the connection. Attach the coaxial connector on the end of the power supply cord to the connector on the bottom of the clamp, then connect the AC plug to an electrical outlet.

System Operation —Flex Adjustment3

Your DayLight 5K2 features two sections of a unique positioning technology. The upper and lower flex sections utilize three different flex materials working together to provide angular and azimuth adjustments that allow you to position the light head in an infinite number of positions, and do so without drooping or slipping.

3.1 Up/down angle.Use the lower flex section to achieve the bulk of your desired up or down angle. Place one hand on the clamp while gently pushing the control housing up or down to desired angle. You can “fine tune” the up/down angle with the upper flex section by grasping the front of the control housing and gently pressing the light head up or down to achieve the desired position.

3.2 Rotation angle.Your DayLight 5K2 is specifically designed to fit the shape of the SpaWhite lens/mouthpiece. For best fit, the rotational angle of the light head should be parallel to the plane of the mouthpiece. To adjust the rotational angle, gently grasp the light head and the upper flex section and twist the flex tube to desired angle.

4.1 On/off.Your DayLight 5K2 will power on automati-cally when power is first applied. To turn off the power, press and hold the power switch until the display goes dark. From an OFF position, press and hold the power switch until the display illuminates.

System Operation —Control Panel4

4.3 Start.Once you have set the desired treat-ment time, activate the light in timed mode by pressing the START/STOP button. The light head will activate and the timer will begin counting down one minute at a time. When the timer reaches 1 minute, it begins counting down in seconds (60, 59, 58 and so on.). When you notice the dis-play changing rapidly, you know that you have less than a minute before your client requires your attention.

4.4 Stop. When the light is running in timed mode, pressing START/STOP will pause the light. PAUSE mode is indi-cated by the display flashing. Press-ing START/STOP a second time will resume the treatment from the point it was paused.

4.2 White/BlueThis control illuminates the light without activating the timer for performing shade-matching inspections. Using this control you may select the color of light through a rotation of button presses. First press dis-

plays white light, second press activates blue light, and third press is a test mode that illuminates both blue and white LEDs. A fourth press

turns the lillumation off while leaving the light powered up.

System Operation —Inspection & Whitening Modes5

5.1 Inspection (white light) mode. This mode produces white light that replicates daylight (color temperature 5000 Kelvin), so your inspections are accurate and easily replicated, regardless of ambient lighting. To activate inspection mode, press the blue|white button until the white light is illuminated. To select the white light mode, press the blue|white button until the solid blue light is visible, then press once more. Two presses from blue will activate the test mode, which is not to be used for shade matching inspec-tions. To return to whitening mode, press the start button, assuring the light is emitting blue light only. If not emitting blue light, press the blue|white light until it does.

5.2 Whitening (blue light) mode. The blue light emitted by the DayLight 5K2 is the ideal spectrum for energizing and accelerating the active ingredients in the SpaWhite gel. When exposed to moderately high amounts of light in the 430 to 470 nanometer spectrum, these active ingredients accelerate their release of hydroxyl radicals, which act to break down stains on tooth enamel. The whitening mode is selected by setting the timer to the desired treatment duration – usually 15 to 20 minutes – and pressing the start button, assuring the light is emitting blue light only.

Alternating Wavelength (AW) mode for enhanced whitening.

5.2 Advanced Whitening mode. The new DayLight 5K Series 2 incor-porates advanced Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, allowing for electronic switching between colors. The Series 2 features a new mode, Alternating Wavelength, or AW, which begins the whitening assistance process with five minutes of blue light. adds full spectrum white LEDs to the blue for minutes six through 10. This “five-on-five-off ” pattern repeats for the duration of the whitening process and accomplishes two things: First, the hydroxyl radicals require blue light to split away from the hydrogen peroxide. Once this process is initiated, the addition of the white light causes the radicals to move at more varying rates than with the blue spectrum only, allowing more uniform stain removal coverage. Second, it generates more heat than the blue mode alone, and heat is one of the five critical elements required for suc-cessful teeth whitening. The other four are hydrogen peroxide, time, pressure, and, of course, light. Heat further accelerates the release and activity of the hydroxyl radi-cals, producing a more thorough whiten-ing process. This heat level is quite safe. Ad-vanced passive cooling methodology used in all versions of the DayLight 5K limits the surface temperature of the light emit-ting head to 113°F, so while it feels quite warm to the touch, it is well within the safe zone. The heat is transferred to the gel by radiating from the LED housing through the clear mouthpiece.

What You Should Know About the SpaWhite Smile Rejuvenation Process6

SpaWhite is the most advanced smile reju-venation treatment available. It will make your smile fresher, brighter, and whiter. SpaWhite is different from other whiten-ing systems because it delivers better results more rapidly and with greater safety than less advanced methods. The process har-nesses patented technologies borne out of a multimillion dollar research and develop-ment program including:• An impregnated foam compression pad

designed for unprecedented penetration of hydrogen peroxide into tooth enamel. The compression pad also causes the hydrogen peroxide to release at a more uniform rate over time. This acts to eliminate the tooth sensitivity typically associated with other power and take-home whitening systems. It also con-forms to the shape and position of your teeth even better than trays custom made by dentists, since it conforms to your bite shape when you use it, while custom trays can lose their fit over time with natural changes in your bite.

• The DayLight 5K2: A state-of-the-art cosmetic teeth whitening light that ac-celerates the whitening process through interaction with the foam-pad- and pH stabilized whitening gel. This light uses advanced light-emitting diode technol-ogy, which is vastly more efficient than older, incandescent technologies used by less advanced whitening systems. This new light design is extremely stable thermally, requiring none of the fans or other forced cooling methods required of older technology.

• The advanced design of the light used with SpaWhite heats the light head

case to about 12°F above normal body temperature; it remains at that level during the SpaWhite process. This is sufficiently warm to optimize the flow and molecular excitation of the whiten-ing gel through the pads and onto the teeth, yet is cool enough so as not to cause any discomfort or risk of radiant or contact burns, as may be the case with less advanced technologies.

• The SpaWhite process employs a nar-row blue-light spectrum — just what’s needed for acceleration of the formation of hydroxyl radicals from the whitening gel (the hydroxyl radicals are the com-ponents that permeate the tooth enamel and break down stains). This is impor-tant, since with SpaWhite there is no UV light exposure or risk of over heating the teeth, as is the case with some other whitening methods.

• A unique light-guiding mouth piece that disperses blue light over all tooth surfaces via its built-in optical lens. This technology allows you to close your mouth during the procedure and elimi-nates the need for uncomfortable lip and cheek retractors. It also acts to create a teeth-to-pad fit that is actually superior to custom-made trays, as the mouth-piece/pad combination acts to optimize pressure based on the bite position in real time.

How white will my teeth get?

The color of your smile is determined by two layers of tooth structure: the lighter enamel (outer layer) and the darker dentin (inner layer). The composition of these is determined by your genetics. Your teeth will never be whiter than they were when

Page 14: Dl5 k2 1 owners manual

– 10 –

they emerged in childhood. But for most individuals this is very white. The patented SpaWhite process attacks and removes even deep stains that have accumulated in your tooth enamel — the lighter colored outer layer. As a result, most individuals will experience a signifi-cant improvement. However, no noninva-sive cosmetic whitening treatment — even SpaWhite —can lighten your dentin. If your tooth enamel is unusually thin or translucent, or if your dentin is especially dark, you may not be able to achieve the level of brightness you desire without den-tal veneers placed by a cosmetic dentist.White spots

“White spots” represent areas of the teeth where earlier changes in the mineral con-tent have occurred. This alteration can be caused by genetics, nutrition, poor dental hygiene, or unbalanced fluoride intake dur-ing tooth development. White spots can become evident after orthodontic braces have been removed. The SpaWhite smile rejuvenation process can reveal white spots previously hidden by stains. This effect usually fades within 24 to 48 hours. Con-tinued use of WhiteIce and regular fluoride therapies, including brushing with fluoride toothpaste, will usually help remedy the appearance of these white spots.Dental restorations

SpaWhite works best on natural tooth structure. While SpaWhite does remove surface stains from dental restorations such as crowns or caps, veneers, and white fillings, It is not intended to make them whiter. The color of these structures will remain as they were when installed unless they have accumulated stains. SpaWhite will still give you a brighter overall smile, but a cosmetic dentist should be consulted if you wish to have these restorations match your natural teeth made whiter by SpaWhite.

Tooth sensitivity

The SpaWhite technology makes it pos-sible to get excellent cosmetic results without the tooth sensitivity typically associated with whitening procedures. However, on very rare occasions tooth sensitivity can occur. This is usually a mild and brief side effect, generally subsiding within 24 hours. Treatment with an over-the-counter analgesic such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may provide temporary relief. Normal gentle brushing with Whi-teScience multi-action whitening tooth-paste is recommended. SpaWhite has a diagnostic benefit: Sensitivity lasting more than a few days may reveal conditions that you should bring to the attention of your dentist, such as micro-fractures, decay, or leaking restorations.Blanching and irritation

A slight blanching or whitening of the gums is normal. Usually lasting no more than 30 minutes, this blanching represents a healthy healing phase induced by the antiseptic properties of the whitening gel, which reduce bacteria levels in the mouth. Clients with gingivitis, periodontal disease, or compromised gums may experience some post-treatment soreness. This irrita-tion usually lasts no more than 24 hours. Applying a small amount of vitamin E oil to this area will accelerate the healing. If significant discomfort is encountered during the SpaWhite procedure, the cli-ent should remove the mouthpiece and continue to whiten at home with WhiteIce. Minor inflammation, chapping, or irrita-tion of the lips may also occur in rare cases, which can be treated with the application of lip balm, petroleum jelly, or vitamin E oil. An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be used to provide relief in extraordinary cases where symptoms last more than two hours; use as directed on the label of the medication.

No user-serviceable parts. There are no bulbs or other devices in your DayLight 5K2 which will “burn out.” The advanced light-emitting diode technology outlasts conventional light bulbs to an extreme degree. They last longer than incandescent bulbs by hundreds — even thousands — of times. Should one of the diodes or any other part of your DayLight 5K2 ever fail, contact your Territory Manager who will arrange to have it repaired or replaced for you as long as you are an authorized SpaWhite dealer in good standing.

Use of the hex wrench.Over time and with use the special nuts that secure the control section to the up-per and lower flex sections may loosen. Should this occur, the head will not hold position, but will tip from one side or the other. To correct this situation, use the thin hex wrench that came in your carry-ing case to re-tighten these two nuts.

Normal operating temperature. The advanced design and light-emitting diode technology of your DayLight 5K2 allows it to operate without fans or other forced cooling methods. The extremely efficient thermal design allows the case temperature of the light head to rise to about 113°F and remain at that temperature as long as the light-emitting diodes are illuminated. This temperature is quite safe and will not deform or affect the clear SpaWhite lens/mouthpiece.
