Zu Gott Zu Gott Zu Gott Zu Gott Zu Gott die Herrlichkeit!die Herrlichkeit!die Herrlichkeit!die Herrlichkeit!die Herrlichkeit!

“I shall walk through this world but once. Therefore, if there is any goodthing that I need to do, let me do it now. For I shall not walk this way again.”(A poem found in the pocket of Abram Lincoln when he was assassinated)

follow the path. I have enumerated the accomplishmentsof our team during our term in the President’s Report. It may not be enough but it gives me a sense of fulfilmentknowing that somehow or the other we touched thelives of our constituents. Carl Jung once said, “It isbetter to be whole than to be good”. At the end of theday, I prefer to be good than to be whole but betteryet, to be both. It was not a perfectstint, but it sank to methat there are nomistakes only lessonslearned. For those I havewronged, my sincerestapologies. For thoseI have donegood, may you‘pay itforward’.In thefinal analysis, what mattersmost, is that infuture life, I willhave the portionto hear from Himwho sits as JudgeSupreme thewelcome words,“Well done thougood and faithfulservant : enter thouinto the joy of thyLord.” See you at theGrand AlumniH o m e c o m i n g !Animo, La Salle!

As I step down from the presidency of the De LaSalle Alumni Association De La Salle University-Dasmariñas Chapter, Inc., I shall go with sorrowsknowing that there are still a lot of things to be done. However, I know in my heart that I led the AlumniAssociation to great heights (like other presidents havedone before me) and as Frank Sinatra would sing “I didit my way”. For now, it is time to give others the chanceto serve. In retrospect, “my way” didn’t mean throwing myweight around doing the things I want. It didn’t meanthat I arbitrarily pursued my objectives. On the contrary,I tried practicing humility and patience, and above all, maintaining harmony within the organization. For I firmlybelieve that, “Harmony being the strength and supportof all societies…” True enough, I survived the two-yearterm with my team fully intact and performing very well.“My way” simply means I did it with style. Tatak Golla ikanga! Going back to the concept of doing good, the AlumniAssociation thru “Alumni Tulungan Center” has extendedits helping hand towards the various initiatives of theUniversity and the different members of the Lasalliancommunity. A total of almost a million pesos weredisbursed to support scholarships, career development, infrastructure, medical and mortuary assistance, trainings, and many other significant programs andactivities. In scholarship alone, the Alumni Associationset aside five hundred thousand pesos (Php 500,000.00)to form part of the Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund.By and large, we committed ourselves to do what webelieve is good. It is the thrust of my incumbency, andmodesty aside, we know that we delivered. As aptly putby Kahlil Gibran, “You give but little when you give ofyour possessions. It is when you give of yourself thatyou truly give.” Your Alumni Association led the way ingiving, it is our standing appeal to our fellow alumni to

Spotlight on 83’s and 98’s

Going down memory lanesBy Verniño B. Gutierrez

Of course a party is only as good as the dashingdebonair and graciousness of its host so without furtherado let me introduce you to our Alumni homecominghost, Batch 1998. From the fun times of 1983 let’s moveforward to more familiar times. Let me take a peekfrom what I can remember during this time.It was inJanuary 8, 1998 that Ramzi Yousef was sentenced tolife imprisonment for the planning of the World TradeCenter bombing. Shortly after that another bomb hit theUS. Then President Bill Clinton denied on Americantelevision “Having sexual relations with that woman(Monica Lewinsky)”. I recalled looking at one Lewinskycigar which became very fashionable then. How couldyou forget Titanic, the 1998 Academy Award best picturewinner. It was also in 1998 that famed Japanesedirector Akira Kurosawa passed away. I have to admitto having been ignorant of the late director’s genius backthen but after seeing his movie “Ran” I got to understandwhat a great talent Asia just lost. This was the yearwhen we celebrated our centennial of independencewith the theme “Kalayaan: Kayamanan ng Bayan”. InDLSU-D, our campus was part of the De La SalleUniversity-System with the late Br. Andrew Gonzalesas president and Dr. Herminia Torres as executive vicepresident. This was a year of new vigor in studentactivities as the team of Office of Student Affairs werecomposed of dynamic workers headed by the late Mrs.Felicitacion A. Antonio. This was the year of the womenas it saw the election and appointment of female studentleaders such as Ivy Morales, president of the SupremeStudent Council and Nohrin Evangelista, editor in chiefof Heraldo Filipino. I wish I could spend more time picking brain with youbut time is a luxury we don’t have. Let’s treasure andsavor it. Raise your glasses as we salute the gloriouspast that has come alive at the present. Our salute toBatches ’83 and ’98! Animo, La Salle!

Circa 1998 Circa 1983

In case you haven’t heard a grand party is in theworks and for those in the know they’re monitoringthings like a hawk on a prey. Let me fill you in on sometidbits about the cause of our celebration. It’s in honorof our beloved Silver Jubilee celebrants from Batch ’83that the fun fares are blown. They say that it takes avillage to raise a child, let’s take a look at the conditionof the village to which our celebrants have been borninto, shall we? A perfect concoction to keep a party going is to fill itwith spirits. Not the kind though that we all think hidesunder our beds when we were small or the discothequeup in summer capital Baguio City. I’m talking aboutsome good old fashioned booze. Tanduay Rhum is onegood example. For your amusement I was able to findout that it’s one of the most awarded rum produced inthe Philippines and it is in 1983 that they bagged mostof the awards. But don’t get me wrong, liquor of anykind was and still prohibited in campus. Much moredon’t expect a Tanduay to be served during thehomecoming. Hi! Hi! Hi! Of course we’re aware that1983 was a dangerous time in Philippine history. InAugust of 1983 Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. wasassassinated. As Ninoy once said “ The Filipino peopleis worth dying for.” The media was released from itsshackles and the whole world saw a nation in mourning. That event led eventually to the historic Edsa Revolutionof 1986. What a time it was. Back in school, in 1983,the name of our institution then was Emilio AguinaldoCollege with the late Dr. Paulo C. Campos as itspresident. Some faces during those great times arestill around now in De La Salle University-Dasmariñaslike Dr. Laura R. Campos who was the Asst. Dean ofStudent Affairs, Dr. Myrna F. Ramos who was theSecretary of the Division of Arts and Science, andfaculty members Mr. Ricarte Balayo, Mr. BienvenidoRamirez Jr., and Mr. Liberato Lontoc.

I am extremely overwhelmed of being conferredas an Outstanding Alumnus in the field of Public Serviceby the Board of Trustees and Executive Council of theDe La Salle Alumni Association, Dasmariñas Chapter,Inc. My sincerest gratitude to the entire De La Sallecommunity for the recognition and commendation.

I wouldn’t be where I am now if not for the wisdomand values DLSU- Dasmariñas instilled on me. I thankyou because you played a vital part in the success thatI am reaping at the moment. Everything I learned frommy Alma Mater honed and molded me to become abetter person that I am today. Be assured that asMunicipal Mayor of Dasmariñas I would be steadfastto my commitment as a public servant and that I wouldlive by the morals and principles of De La SalleUniversity.

To all DLSU alumni, may you continue to make adifference and create a positive change in the lives ofthe people around you. Be an inspiration…be ablessing. To everyone, I share with you this award……ANIMO LA SALLE!

HON. JENNIFER A. BARZAGAMunicipal MayorDasmariñas, Cavite

To my fellow alumni:

I am overwhelmed by the award conferred on me asone of the Outstanding Alumni of De La Salle University inthe field of public service. As the elected representative ofthe fourth district of Batangas, I try my best to respond towhat our people expect from their leaders. I know that asa lawmaker, my primary mandate is to actively participatein the crafting of laws that will benefit our country and ourpeople. Having gone around my district I have, however, witnessed the situation of our constituents and realizedthat if I were to live up to the Christian teachings of myalma mater I may have to do more than what is expectedof a mere legislator; I will have to respond with haste totheir present situation or predicament.

I have thus used my Priority Development AssistanceFund, otherwise known as pork barrel, in answer to thedemands of my most needy constituents. My work istransparent and anyone may examine how I have allocatedmy pork barrel for education, infrastructure, medicalassistance for indigent patients, and others. Humility aside,I believe that my fellow Lasallian alumni will find that I haveproved the people correct in voting for me.

Thank you very much for this distinction. I pray that Iwill continue to do La Salle proud as I continue to performmy tasks as an elected official of this country.

Animo, La Salle!

To my fellow alumni, it is with great pride and honorto present to you the accomplishments of the Board ofTrustees and the Executive Council of your De La SalleAlumni Association De La Salle University-DasmariñasChapter, Inc. Under my watch, we strived hard toimprove our initiatives and services. I know that we didit “all for the love of thee”. Number one on my list, is the creation of the AlumniScholarship Endowment Fund designed to benefit theunderprivileged but deserving students. On this regard, the Alumni Association donated five hundred thousandpesos (Php 500,000.00) as seed money for thispurpose. Also during my incumbency, we were able toenact policy by which the beneficiary of the AlumniScholarship is the immediate relative of the alumni. Thefirst beneficiary is Ms. Monica V. Pineda, HRM1-1, sisterof Rommel V. Pineda, a graduate of BSBA EconomicsBatch 2007. It is my fervent hope that you help usincrease the number of our scholars by contributing tothe Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund. The Alumni Association has also contributed in thevarious projects and activities of the University and thedifferent sectors of the Lasallian community. A total ofthree hundred thirty six thousand two hundred seventyone pesos (Php 336, 271.00) was spent for differentendeavors such as medical and mortuary assistance, career development, alumni assemblies, infrastructures, among others. The Alumni Association has also spearheaded orco-sponsored projects and activities in partnership withthe different offices. Just to enumerate some, theCareer Seminar Series with Guidance and CounselingOffice, the Grand Homecoming of Former SPREADScholars with the Student Admissions Office, theAccountancy Alumni Assembly with the AccountingDepartment, and the Resource Mobilization Programof the Vice Chancellor for Mission, External Affairs andDevelopment Office. Other milestones accomplishedby the Alumni Association were in collaboration with theAlumni Relations and Placement Office such as theAlumni Portal which is a state-of-the-art platform forcareer matching and the Alumni Database that hoststwenty thousand five hundred fifty (20, 550) profiles. I am extremely elated to report to you that since weassumed office in 2006 there are nine hundred sixtythree (963) alumni who returned to visit the Alumni Officeand our campus. The number does not include the

The President’s Reportattendees of the alumni homecomings which has alsotremendously increased. Also, our new alumni card ishonored in one hundred thirty six (136) establishmentsfor perks and privileges. It is my challenge to the wouldbe elected officers to include discounts in the purchaseof medicines and in payment of tuition fee in Lasallianschools. It is a dream but it is not impossible,it is doable. In our two-year term, the Alumni Association hasmanaged nine (9) collegiate homecomings and two (2)grand alumni homecomings. I would like to personallycommend the efforts of the Vice President forHomecoming Joel Espedido and the CollegiatePresidents for making the homecomings successfuland meaningful. It is also noteworthy that the AlumniAssociation has given citations to alumni for theirexemplary performance in their chosen fields. Let mecongratulate this year’s awardees of the OutstandingAlumni in the different fields, Ms. Marian Rivera in thefield of entertainment, Hon. Mayor Jenny Barzaga inthe field of public service, and specially to my worthybrother and classmate in PNPA Tagapagpatupad Classof 1992 , Hon. Congressman Mark Llandro Mendozaalso in the field of public service. Our awardees areour role models as they continue to exemplify theLasallian motto of being “Christian Achievers for Godand Country”. Finally, I would also like to express my deepestgratitude to all the members of the Board of Trusteesled by the chairman Dr. Alvin Crudo, thank you for yourvote of trust and confidence. To the Executive Counciland College Presidents and Representatives, I couldnot have pulled it off without your genuine support. Tothe alumni staff and scholars, job well done people! There are a lot of things to be done and I’m surethose who would take our place will strive harder anddo better. For now, I offer our accomplishments, firstand foremost, to the Great Architect of the Universeand to you my fellow alumni, my fellow Lasallians! ToGod be the Glory! Animo, La Salle!

Ayon sa Lasallian Guiding Principles (LGP), “LasallianEducation is a mission and a ministry at the service of God,the Church and Society, and directed towards integral Humanand Christian development and liberation.”

At

TTTTTumumumumumutugutugutugutugutugon kon kon kon kon ka ba?a ba?a ba?a ba?a ba?

Babalikan ko ang mga batayang Lasalyano na nagsasabiang mga (Propesyonal na Lasalyano) “serve as resourcesfor the renewal of the church and for the integral developmentof society.”

Ika nga, “the only thing for evil to prosper, is for goodmen to do nothing.”
