Blink and you’ll miss it. That would pretty much describe Spring here at dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL thanks to diaries that have been fit to burst with new openings, launches, celebrations and events, all of which continuing to cement Birmingham’s reputation as the city to watch.

We can’t see that changing over the summer months either, with two major projects set to open that will change the face of the city forever along with the attitudes of those visiting it. Firstly the Mailbox will introduce a whole new, high-end retail experience to the city, we’ve already fallen hard for the Everyman Cinema and stunning Gas Street Social as well as the new look Malmaison hotel, restaurant and bar. This summer sees the opening of the bigger, better and bolder Harvey Nichols and this issue we have a sneak peek at what treats they have to offer us. And then there’s Grand Central and the John Lewis anchor store, set to change the face of how every train visitor sees the city forever; first impressions really do count!

We’re very much focused on everything West Midlands this summer and you’ll find something local on every page; whether that be a food review or the fashion that’s available from your local store, not just online. We’ve even a guide to saying I do in the West Midlands, featuring perhaps our biggest competition ever – a chance to win your dream wedding at Hotel Du Vin.

In fact the only time we leave the West Midlands is in our travel section and even then we make sure we fly from the fantastic Birmingham Airport. This issue we’ve jetted off to Madrid, the Langedouc region of France and St Helena- we get about!

So pour yourself a long drink, get settled in the sunshine and enjoy this summer edition of dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL, our biggest issue yet. We’ll see you again in autumn, just in time for Halloween and Bonfire night!

Who would have thought that the dark streets of Birmingham would become a tourist attraction?

The hit BBC Drama ‘Peaky Blinders’ about the gangs that used to roam the streets of Birmingham causing chaos have sparked so much interest that the very streets where they used to live and cause mayhem have become a tourist attraction in their own right and with ‘Peaky Tours’ you can now experience the sights and sounds of the REAL ‘Peaky Blinders’ on a walking tour of the actual places they used to live and strike fear in the hearts of the residents and the police.

‘Peaky Tours’ is the brainchild of Adrian Barrows, tailor and entrepreneur, who together with fellow entrepreneur John Moore have put together a 90 minute guided walking tours of the streets where the real Peaky Blinders used to ply their shadowy trade.

The 90-minute guided tour begins at The Crown Inn on the High Street, Deritend and takes in historic buildings such as Curzon Street Station, Gun Barrel Proof House, Typhoo Tea Factory, Digbeth Police Station and the Custard Factory. The tour also benefits from the services of famous Brummie historian and University of Birmingham professor, Carl Chinn MBE to help conduct the tours and bring the real Peaky Blinders’ stories to life.

To add a 21st century spin to the walking tour, a handheld projector will be used to show old pictures of the time, displayed on nearby walls. This will bring the architecture and ambience of the streets to the audience and make the tour even more atmospheric.

For anybody who is a fan of the TV series or just wants to know more about Birmingham’s history then ‘Peaky Tours’ is a fantastic addition to what the city has to offer. Having already sold out its previous tours, the attraction is proving popular with all ages and is seen as a great alternative night out in Birmingham.

The basic 90 minute tour costs £12.95, but for £39.95 you can get dinner, drinks and a Q&A with Prof. Chinn too. Private and corporate tours are also available and proving rather popular.

CHOCKS AWAY AT THINKTANKBirmingham Museums Trust (BMT) have launched a new gallery at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, dedicated to the iconic Supermarine Spitfire and its legacy to the city of Birmingham.

Both a Supermarine Spitfire Mark IX and a Hawker Hurricane Mark IV are currently on display suspended from the ceiling at Thinktank and both of these aircraft have a special connection to the region. More than half of all Spitfires were manufactured in the Castle Bromwich ward of the City from 1939 - 1945 and parts for the Hurricane were made in the city.

Ellen McAdam, Director of Birmingham Museums Trust said “The Spitfire is a key symbol of Birmingham’s great history of manufacturing. This new gallery will introduce more visitors to the aeroplane that played such an important part in defending Britain in World War II. Curators are using objects from the city’s collection as well as loans to tell stories about the people who made, flew and maintained these great aircraft.”

Visitors to Thinktank can explore the history of the aviation industry in the West Midlands and discover the science of flying. By using the iconic Spitfire as a case study the new gallery encourages visitors of all ages to find out how technology has changed over time and how aeronautical designers and pilots have always sought to push boundaries and innovate.

The new gallery acknowledges that the Spitfire is more than just an aircraft, for some whose lives it saved its work is still within living memory. Specially created hands-on exhibits, displays of personal objects and stories from people involved in the industry from 1939 to the present day bring the story of the Spitfire to life and share living history in a poignant yet proud way.

THE KING DANCES & CARMINA BURANA Marking Director David Bintley’s 20th year with the company, the acclaimed Carmina burana from 1995 is juxtaposed with his latest work, The King Dances as the Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to the Birmingham Hippodrome stage for its summer season.

In 1653 the 14-year-old Louis XIV of France danced the role of Apollo the sun god in Le Ballet de la Nuit, and earned himself forever the name the Sun King. In The King Dances, David Bintley reimagines the very beginnings of the ballet, when men were quite literally the kings of dance.

In Carmina burana, the first ballet Bintley created for the Company as Director, an encounter with the mind-blowing Goddess Fortuna deals three seminarians a major lesson in the fickle nature of fate. Compelled to abandon their sacred studies to pursue a more sensual approach to life, forbidden pleasures and physical temptations quickly become the young men’s most eager areas of revision. Soon the young celebrants are soaring with passion, love and alcohol.

SUMMER CYCLING As the summer of 2015 fast-approaches, the urge to get outdoors and explore over-comes all of us and what better way to do it than by bike? We love the hippy ‘dluxe’, summer stylings the Electra bike range, designed in California where the sun is always shining.

The 70s influence is clear to see thanks to a bold 70s palette – oranges, pinks and yellows and bursts of flower prints throughout. It’s a real reflection of the latest catwalk trends and there’s even the option of added tassles for the handlebars – well, fringing is on every fashionista’s hotlist isn’t it? The bikes may have a retro feel but the technology and design is forward-thinking and modern.

Shoppers will be able to relax and enjoy a tipple from the Red Bus Bar – an eye-catching vintage 1967 Big Red London Routemaster bus that magically transforms itself into a fully functioning bar - or try out

the innovative juice bikes for a guilt-free treat! Sunnyhull’s dedicated Kid Zone means little ones will be kept fully occupied with summer storytelling, face painting and balloon making.

Sunday 19th July will be a Food and Drink extravaganza, where even little ones can learn their way around the kitchen at a pop-up children’s cookery school. Grown ups can kick back and relax in Sunnyhull’s al fresco communal dining area and to round things off there’s a not-to-be-missed performance by X Factor boy band, Remedy.

Sunday 26th July is all about the Kids with fun planned for the whole family. Britain’s Got Talent star Bailey McConnell will be taking centre stage, while a pop-up cinema, balloon modelling, hula hoop and hula necklace workshops and face painting are sure to keep kids busy all day.

Sunnyhull will close on Sunday 2nd August with a Home and Garden day, perfect for all those budding interior designers and green-fingered enthusiasts. Get hands on at the potting and canvas wall workshops, browse the pop-up interior shops courtesy of M&S, Liv’s, Le Creuset, Farrow and Ball and House of Fraser or head to the stage where X Factor’s Rough Copy will be entertaining shoppers.

Senoritas and Senors are bid a fr iendly hello and welcome to Amantia, Birmingham’s hottest new contemporary Spanish & Mediterranean bar and restaurant. Featuring the finest and most authentic cuisine from the continent, dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL were lucky enough to road-test the accomplished menu recently and we can genuinely state that their steak could be The Best in Birmingham. A bold statement, we know, but it really was spectacular, as was the rest of the fare, which is ski lful ly created by their acclaimed Chefs, led by Andrea Tragaj (formerly of San Carlo Group).

As is typical on the city streets of Madrid, which is where much of the restaurant’s inspiration derives, courtesy of Marta Retenaga (owner), Amantia offers Pintxos (pinchos) served with cocktails and drinks from 4pm. These are bite-sized versions of some of the signature dishes on the Amantia tapas menu designed to tempt and tantalise your tastebuds – and they certainly do. Their attention to detail even sees Amantia importing truly authentic Valencian Almonds and Spanish cheeses, so that the flavours really are direct from the continent.

Offering mains and tapas, with complimentary homemade bread with every meal, favourites include Manchego cheese served with homemade red pepper marmalade and fried Valencia almonds; Berenjenas con Miel, which are lightly battered aubergine chips drizzled with honey – forget sweet potato fries: these are the future and the aforementioned Solomillo de Ternera, which is a 21-day hung 9oz beef f i l let cooked to your liking and served with sautéed potatoes, braised onions and a Pedro Ximenez sherry sauce. You will thank us for bringing this to your attention someday!

This contemporary-styled restaurant opened its doors in March and has been quietly perfecting their menu and drinks offering in readiness for its official launch on July 2nd. Given its supreme food offering, coupled with the fact that they are smack bang in the city’s hottest new dining district – Bennetts Hill/Colmore Row – it ’s a recipe for success, Spanish style. We defy you to find better Spanish food anywhere in Birmingham. Highly recommended.

Specialising in a range of contemporary Fine Art, Teddy bears and collectables, Apple Pie House in Digbeth’s Custard Factory and The Gloucester Quays Antiques Centre is a collector’s dream.

Now celebrating a great first year, the gallery is going from strength to strength and as a result Apple Pie House has moved to a bigger unit within the Custard Factory to give it its own space amidst the existing shop of Bears, Disney and gifts. The new double shop space is situated in the main strip by the oval pond.

Greame and his partner Jamie expanded the business from the original shop in The Gloucester Quay Antiques Centre to the Custard Factory in Digbeth. In both galleries you can find the beautiful works by Kerry Darlington, Leigh lambert, Celia Lake, Lhouette, Garry Floyd and Katy Jade Dobson to name but a few. With a grand selection of bears including the highly collectable Charlie bears and Isabelle collection with fans of Disney not missing out either. There really is a collection for everyone.

If the idea of organising your big day fills you with dread and you just don’t know where to start with everything from the venue to the wine, the table plan to the flowers and that’s before you’ve even thought about dress shopping then thank heavens for professionals like Georgia Crompton from The Belfry Hotel & Resort, who are on hand to help. dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL’S Rae Stephenson spoke to Georgia to find out what a day in the life of a real wedding planner is like, and why The Belfry Hotel & Resort could be the perfect venue for your big day (and the first big tick off that to-do list!)

TIME TO SAY I DO... TO A WEDDING PLANNER

Starting my day. First things first:

There is no normal day! I come in and check my appointments for the day. I’ll see what showrooms are available and need to be made presentable. But first of all I’ll check my emails - some will be very long! A mixture of ones from current brides with lots of questions about packages, and new enquiries which need to be actioned. I go through those first and get caught up. Sometimes I will have 5 emails from a bride who was obviously just having a night time panic and I sit and try to piece it all together and keep her calm.

Once the admin’s over, there is no real schedule.

It depends on what appointments I have. Even if I start out with a structure, I can be in the middle of something and then someone calls and I can be on the phone for half an hour so that completely changes everything. If I have 2 to 3 appointments a day, I can obviously schedule around those, but it can be challenging. We just have to do what people want and need from us though. I never leave a day without getting back to people.

The highlight of my day:

I love doing appointments! I would happily do 10 a day. But of course that would mean I couldn’t respond to my emails! Whether it’s new wedding appointments or detailed meetings with existing couples, it’s always lovely to get a coffee and sit and have a chat. I see a really varied mix of people as we can host events from 25 to 300 guests. You make very strong relationships with people that way, we end up having a close bond. Sometimes that means I have to become a pre-marriage counsellor and settle a few squabbles! It’s very important to be patient and calm. I think it’s also really important to be full of enthusiasm, even if you’re having a busy day yourself. If I could do appointments all day everyday this would be the perfect job. Even on Saturdays I can have five appointments and I’m genuinely happy to do them. Days when there are appointments or weddings are my favourite.

Giving people the ‘wow’ factor wedding:

We have some beautiful rooms here which definitely get the top vote for weddings. Our stunning Ryder Room is perfect for an intimate wedding ceremony with panoramic views over our golf course. If the guest numbers are a little higher then The Sutton Suite is perfect with views of the golf course and terrace doors leading outside for those sunny days. Our most popular room for receptions is our Wishaw Suite. This room really has the “wow” factor with a gorgeous chandelier which creates that magical and sparkling atmosphere that you want on your wedding day. The grounds here at The Belfry are one of our best features. People say “how is it so close to the motorway and Birmingham City Centre

when it’s so green and vast?” The location is one of the main reasons people come, it’s a minute from the motorway but as soon as you drive onto the resort you forget it all due to our 550 acres of rural tranquillity. Our wider facilities also add to the all-important wow factor, with our suites such as The Manor House that offers an elegant blend of classic and contemporary or our luxurious spa that provides the perfect environment to settle those pre wedding nerves.

A wedding planner’s day is never done! Favours for friends and family.

I do try really hard not to get involved in friends’ wedding planning. But mostly friends and family just ask for a bit of advice. Things like “is there anything I’ve missed that I should have done?” I aim to be a help but I don’t push anything, it’s all about their plans and their day. If they need help I’ll be there and definitely do what I can… maybe pull a few strings and help with contacts, I’m so happy to do that for them.

Trend spotting this year:

There is a strong trend for natural décor this year. There are a lot of natural wood centre pieces, slices of tree trunks, hessian chair covers and jam jars. A much more rustic feel. The colour schemes are becoming more natural in tone too. Even bridesmaids dresses, which used to be bold to keep away from the white of the bride, are more cream and nude.

“Choosing the right suit for your wedding day is one of those decisions that can become all-consuming” writes Adrian Barrows of The Bespoke Tailor.

On your wedding day all eyes may be on the bride but that doesn’t mean you should take a complete backseat on the sartorial front. On the contrary, your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life so you need to be suited, booted and ready to make an impact.

Whatever form your wedding ceremony takes, it certainly warrants you looking sharp for the occasion, but it’s also important to co-ordinate your groomsmen as well. This doesn’t mean you all need to look identical; suits that are similar in colour with a cut and style that complement each other can actually be more effective.

Unless your wedding is a black tie or top hat and tails event, then I recommend that you always go classic. It may be tempting to wear something that is bang on trend, but think of the photos in years to come. Do you really want to look a fashion victim? Of course you don’t.

This is why wearing a suit that is timeless is the best option. This means a classic two piece or three piece suit that is tailored to your exact body shape should be the order of the day.

With regards to colour, you can never go wrong with a deep navy blue or charcoal grey suit. In the summer you can get away with lighter shades of grey and blue depending on the exact location of where you’re getting married. Always avoid suits with heavy patterning or going with pinstripes – you will either distract or look way too corporate for such an occasion.

The cut of the suit is very much down to personal preference and there are really no rights or wrongs on this subject. Single-breasted suits are simple, smart and contemporary. Double-breasted suits add a bit more formality and sense of occasion. Three-piece suits also add more formality and with a matching waistcoat you can cut a very elegant figure.

When it comes to the wedding day dress shirt, a nice crisp white shirt is the obvious choice. When combined with a beautifully woven and finely patterned silk tie, it becomes an ensemble that is hard to beat. Your wedding is not the time to wear brightly coloured ties or look too business-like, so avoiding power colours like red is always advisable.

And finally on to the shoes. A pair of black, highly polished Oxfords or Brogues that complement the suit you’re wearing will be the perfect finishing touch to your simple but very elegant wedding attire.

All you need to do now is make sure the photographs do you justice!

NOEL FITZPATRICKNOEL FITZPATRICK MODESTLY SHRUGS OFF HIS ‘SUPERVET’ TITLE - BUT HE'S CERTAINLY A HERO TO OUR NATION'S PETS. DLUXE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM AHEAD OF SUPERVET LIVE,

Noel Fitzpatrick knew that veterinary medicine was his calling from an early age. Growing up on a rural farm in Northern Ireland, animals were his first friends. Today, running a successful practise in Surrey and at the helm of TV show The Supervet, he still adores his four legged companions. “I much prefer spending time in the company of animals really because they don’t judge you,” he says. “They allow you to be yourself, they give unconditional love - and most human being are incapable of love without conditions.”

By age 11, Fitzpatrick was coming to realise that animals weren't being given a fair deal. "I was looking at how humanity had got so much from animals over the years .. . every single drug or implant we ever get has to go through animal testing first. It struck me as totally unfair, that animals would give their lives to serve humanity as clinical animals while animals in the UK as pets do not have that technology coming back in their direction."

Determined to give back, Fitzpatrick set up the Humanimal Trust, the running of which he calls his life's goal. "It's about bringing the technology that animals gave us back to help them. It's about funding projects that help study diseases that attacks both humans and animals - if you fund research that helps a dog and a human at the same time then that’s far superior to giving a rabbit cancer to study cancer in humans.

"We want to protect habitats better and preserve life on Earth and look after animals and humans that are going to be affected by bugs, and that feeds into conservation medicine and the protection of species."

Supporting his Trust is hard work - even more so when he’s also operating on patients into the early hours. Fitzpatrick sleeps at the surgery at least a few nights a week, and rarely leaves his practise and his furry inpatients for long. For Supervet Live however, he'll make an exception. "The Supervet Live Tour is lovely because people want to be there to rejoice in life. And it’s full of living creatures sharing that with human beings who only want three things really; something to love, some health, and something to look forward to."

The busy vet doesn't find time to keep up with his social media - “I will give a message to my secretary to put on Facebook but have never actually looked at the site in my life," he admits - which means he didn't quite fathom the nationwide effect that The Supervet had on the outside world until he first attended the London Pet Show.

“It was actually very moving,” he says with a smile. “It was the first time I’d interacted with real people – i.e. not my nurses or colleagues here – who had actually seen the show. It was really wonderful. The first lady who came up was in a wheelchair. She said she was effectively housebound and that the show kept her company … I only see people come to me with sick animals trying to help them, usually in a state of distress or upset, I don’t really see people who tell you anything about the difference that you hope to make in the real world.”

Fitzpatrick will be taking to the stage for Supervet Live sponsored by Eukanuba, discussing advances in the veterinary profession, as well as recounting heart-warming success stories from the TV show. The tour is set to reach the midlands in late autumn with a show at the National Pet Show sponsored by www.gocompare.com at the NEC, Birmingham from the 7th – 8th November.

“Supervet Live is about interacting with the people who want to experience that uplifting joy that a companion animal brings into your life, whether that’s a rabbit, cat or dog … I believe we have a moral responsibility as a society to look after animals. The London Pet Show, though undoubtedly it ’s a commercial event for those exhibiting, for me it’s more a physical representation of what’s in my heart and being a vet."

NOEL FITZPATRICK WILL BE PRESENTING SUPERVET LIVE SPONSORED BY EUKANUBA AT THE NATIONAL PET SHOW SPONSORED BY GOCOMPARE.COM AT THE NEC, BIRMINGHAM FROM THE 7TH – 8TH NOVEMBER. WWW.NATIONALPETSHOW.COM

NARROW HIPSThe simple use of a sarong tied over a bikini gives the appearance of wider hips resulting in a more balanced silhouette- see above. Recommend Rosa Faia sarong www.anita.com

PEAR SHAPEDIf you have a pear shaped body then your hips and waist will be wider than your shoulders with your waist being smaller than your hips. If this is you then we recommend that you choose a swimsuit with a pattern, shirring detail or embellishment across the tummy. This will help to define the waistline and balance out the figure. Also a swimsuit which is darker at the bottom will also draw the attention away from the hips and towards the upper body. Recommend the Miraclesuit Aurora www.monacobeach.co.uk

APPLE SHAPEDIf you have an apple shaped body then your shoulders will be broad and your hips small. To balance your figure you should aim to draw attention to your bottom half. This look can

be achieved by choosing a swimsuit with pattern, embellishment or shirring detail to the lower part, keeping the top half in a solid colour or less embellished than the lower half. Recommend the Miraclesuit Oceanus www.johnlewis.com

OVAL SHAPEDIf you have an oval shaped body then you will have a fuller

bust and shoulders and a more rounded waist and hips. We recommend for the shape of the swimsuit a deep V necked style. Also halter neck styles with bust support would suit your shape very well. The bottom should have a fuller coverage. With regard to the fabric, we recommend

pattern, shirring or draping in the bust area. This will give the impression of a smaller waistline. For the lower

part of the swimsuit we recommend darker or block colour. Recommend the Miraclesuit Sonatina www.simplybeach.com

BOX SHAPEDIf you have a box shaped body then your hips, waist and shoulders will all be around the same width. To simulate a smaller waistline we recommend you look for a swimsuit that has shirring detail around the waist. This will give you a curvier look. Another good option would be the tankini. If you have a long torso the tankini appears to shorten the torso area. Recommend the Miraclesuit Sanibel www.simplybeach.com

LARGE CUPSChoose a well-fitting and supportive bikini top, underwired balconette styles are very good to support and shape the bust. Halter necks can be fine as long as they are not string types which can very easily leave you showing off more

than you bargained for! Also avoid large prints which will distort your proportions. Recommend the Rosa Faia Bohemian Glam bikini www.anita.com

WIDE SHOULDERSA good trick to take the attention off wide shoulders is to choose a well-fitting halter neck bikini or swimsuit. The halter straps create a pleasing ‘v’ around the neck line that serves to draw the eye up and away from the shoulders. If you choose a costume like that pictured from Anita Comfort with multiway straps you can move them around (or lose them altogether) to avoid tan lines once you are settled in your sun lounger. Recommend the Anita Comfort Multiway strap suit www.anita.com

MATERNITY TIPTankinis are great for pregnant mums to be who want to soak up the sun on one last holiday before baby comes. They look great and are comfortable to wear as they are not restrictive on the tummy. A tankini top can easily serve for evening wear by adding a pair of summery trousers in a co-ordinating colour. That means less packing too! Recommend Anita Maternity swimwear www.anita.com

COSTUME CONFIDENTIALOH, TO BE ON THE BEACH! FEAR NOT, THE EXPERTS AT MIRACLE SUIT HAVE THE PERFECT ADVICE SO YOU CAN MATCH YOUR SWIMWEAR TO SHAPE LEAVING YOU CONFIDENT IN YOUR COSTUME AND READY TO HIT THE BEACH.

“I DID IT FOR ME!”

SPECIAL FEATURE

Hayley from Halesowen recently decided the time was right for cosmetic surgery, and spent time researching the options in Birmingham.

“I found an article about a lunchtime boob job and found out this particular surgeon safely uses local anaesthetic and sedation; a great option as I have never really been in hospital and would like a quick recovery.”

After a consultation Hayley knew Mr Nishikawa was the right surgeon for her, and booked her procedure.

Mr Hiroshi Nishikawa, a renowned consultant plastic aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon, performs private cosmetic procedures at The Westbourne Centre including:

Breast Augmentation & UpliftTummy Tuck (abdominoplasty)Nose Reshaping (rhinoplasty)Eyelid Surgery (blepharoplasty)FaceliftLipo-Filling (fat transfer)

The use of local anaesthetic and sedation has revolutionised the way cosmetic procedures are carried out, and Mr Nishikawa is one of the surgeons who pioneered this proven technique.

So we're in the sixth month of the year and your summer holiday is within touching distance. But those resolutions you made back in January to have the kind of sculpted body Greg Rutherford would high-five you for have fallen a little short...

Midlands personal training experts Body Transformation have come up with an exercise plan designed to give real world results to help get you back on track in time for your travels. Perform these in a circuit fashion; one exercise after another and only rest after you have done them all once. Repeat three times.

1. Glute bridge - Lie on your back with knees bent. Feet and knees slightly apart pull the core tight and push through your heels and lift your glutes off the floor. Perform 3 sets x12.

2. Side Plank - Lie on your side and come up onto one knee and elbow. Make sure the hips are lifted and the core is engaged, and hang tight for 30-60 seconds.

3. Plank - Lie face down with your forearms on the floor and hands clasped. Extend the legs behind the body and rise up on the toes. Keeping the back straight, tighten the core and hold the position for 30-60 seconds.

4. Mountain climbers - Start holding a press up position with a neutral spine lift one knee up to the chest with the foot off the floor. Return to start position and alternate legs. 3x10 (each leg)

5. Wide stance Squats - Keep heels flat bend the knees, push your knees out and bum back until you are as low as you can go. Push back up through the heels of the feet. 3x12

6. Split squats - Put one foot in front of the other. Lower your back knee to an inch off the floor and the front foot flat. Push back up through the front foot. Swap legs and go again. 3x12 (each leg)

7. Shoulder Stabilization Series (T, Y, I) - Lie face down with your forehead on the floor. Arms out wide, palms facing the floor. Lift your hands of the floor and squeeze shoulders off the floor. Moving them above your head make a T, Y and I. Return to start position and go again. 3x10

8. Wall Sit - Slowly slide down a wall until the thighs are parallel to the ground. Make sure the knees are directly above the ankles and keep the back straight and as flat against the wall as possible. Go for 20-60 seconds per set (or however long it takes to turn those legs to jelly).

dluxe motorsTHERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN A DRIVE THROUGH THE COUNTRY WITH THE ROOF DOWN ONCE THE SUN IS SHINING, BUT WHAT TO CHOICE IF YOU FANCY A BIT OF WIND IN THE HAIR MOTORING? WE’VE PUT TOGETHER A SOFTTOP SHORTLIST DESIGNED TO SUIT ALL BUDGETS AND ALL NEEDS AS CABRIOLET CRUISING NEEDN’T BE IMPRACTICAL OR PRICEY.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider (from £59,500)

Simply gorgeous! The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider will reach speeds of up to 155mph but we think it’s best stood still and ogled at! Alfas have the reputation for needing to be driven though and the 4C spider is no exception thanks to razor sharp handling.

Mini Convertible from £17,850

There’s something about the Mini that just makes you smile and the Cooper Convertible is no exception. There’s very little room in the back seats and the ride is firm but it’s just sooo cute! The limited edition Highgate model is also fully loaded with options such as toffee leather interior, 17th alloys, special stripes and a brown fabric roof.

Audi A3 Cabriolet from £26,125

Modelled on the new A3 saloon and sporting a more elegant line than its predecessor, the A3 Cabriolet offers all-wheel drive technology and power steering to suit all weather conditions once summer ends. It also comes with a lightweight fabric roof, which opens quickly and virtually disappears into the car, meaning there’s room in the boot for your case too.

BMW 4 Series Conv from £36,675

The replacement for BMW’s classic 3 series convertible, the 4 Series is all about luxury and comfort thanks to a deluxe interior and three-piece retractable metal roof. Inside you’ll find heated seats and BMW’s touchscreen iDrive system. A clever, lightweight construction means that the metal roof does not weight the car down too much so performance is as sharp as its coupe counterpart.

C i t r o e n C 1 H a t c h b a c k f r o m £ 7 , 9 9 5

If you crave the sunshine but all you really need is a city runaround then the stylish Citroen C1 may be the choice for you. The lightweight design and efficient engine reduces running costs, while a spacious interior combined with easy handling make the car comfortable.

A low price doesn’t mean the car isn’t packed with usable features though; all models feature touchscreen technology and integrate with smartphone apps to allow you to tailor your driving experience.

Volkswagen Beetle and Golf Cabriolet from £19,135

One is unashamedly style focused ,the other much more subtle but both are iconic. Both the Golf and the Beetle Cabriolet offer plenty of space both front and back although the Golf is the most practical choice thanks to a decent sized boot roof up or down. The Beetle comes with a huge range of retro personalisation options including wheels and roof colour.

Mercedes E-Class Cabr io let f rom £42 ,005

The Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet boasts the most up-to-date technology of the Mercedes range, with an Aircap wind deflector and Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, which provides a 3D front view for an enhanced safety system.

For further information about the lettings market in Birmingham City Centre or for advice on letting property, call Accord Lets on 0121 3691 644.

West 2, Suffolk Street, Queensway, Birmingham, B1 1LW – www.accordproperty.co.uk

Paul Sherrington, Senior lettings Branch Manager for Accord Lets in Birmingham City Centre answers landlords questions

Do I require building insurance for my apartment that I would like to rent out?

More often than not the buildings insurance is included in the management fee that you pay to your block managing agent. I would suggest that you double check with your managing agent and head lease with regards to this. However, a property is often the biggest investment anyone has. Why would you not want to insure both the building and the contents?

Can I claim, from my Tenant’s deposit, to have the sealant replaced around the bath in my property?

This very much depends on how the property has been kept. As with any silicone there is a limited lifespan and we would suggest that this would need assessing annually. We would not recommend that you approach your Tenant with reimbursement for this minor job unless they have removed the silicone, or reapplied the silicone and not conducted a neat and professional job or if there has clearly been a lack of care and regular cleaning. A professional agent would raise any concerns picked up at inspection stage.

I live abroad and do not want to pay any UK tax on my rental property and the income it generates how can I do this?

As a Landlord based overseas you will need to complete an NRL1 form. You will need to contact your lettings agent for their registration number and then contact the Inland Revenue to complete the required documentation. For further assistance we would suggest that you contact an accountant and take their professional advice.

Accord Lets- Birmingham’s premier letting agency- can reveal that the type of properties bought by landlord’s mean that many are able to boost their returns over and above average cited figures.

Most yields are implied, the product of dividing the average rent in an area by the average house price. In reality, however, landlords do not buy the average property. This is increasingly the case particularly in more expensive areas.

Dividing the average rent by the average house price gives an implied yield of 5.3% in the UK. There is, however, a significant difference between the type and value of properties bought by landlords and owner occupiers. Taking this disparity into account by looking at what each individual landlord paid for their property means the average yield jumps to 6.2%. This means a landlord can expect to make an additional £2,500 a year.

The average rent in the West Midlands in February is £691pcm, an increase of 3% when compared to January 2015 and an increase of 1.2% year-on-year.

With tenants living in a property for a shorter period compared to most owner occupiers, what the two groups are willing to pay for is often very different. In turn this difference has a knock on effect on what landlords and those buying a property to live in themselves will look and pay a premium for. Landlords are becoming increasingly careful about the type of property they buy to boost their return.

Commenting Jack Simpson, Area Lettings Director for Accord Lets, said: “Less experienced landlords should understand that buying a property to let out is very different to buying one to live in. While rising property prices over the last 18 months have squeezed yields, many landlords are still able to achieve a return well in excess of the quoted average.

“The key to securing the highest possible yield is to minimise the purchase price in a way that has only a small impact on the achievable rent. What an owner occupier is willing to pay a premium for isn’t always reflected in the additional rent that can be achieved. This means that the best yields are often achieved on flats rather than houses, but as always presentation and effective marketing advice will enable your property to stand out and maximise your return.”

Madrid is often overlooked for the top spot in people’s must-see mainland Spain escapes, beaten out by the tourist meccas of Barcelona and Marbella. But if you want to experience life at a different pace and escape the tourist clichés in favour of a perfect blend of local hospitality and upmarket sophistication, then Madrid might just be prove to be the perfect city break for you. Kevin Urquhart explored the city and explains why Madrid really is the ultimate Spanish surprise.

Boasting quaint cultural corners, bustling bars, an unrivalled artistic pedigree and incredible cuisine, Madrid is fast establishing itself as the perfect destination for a well needed weekend getaway. And with Norwegian Airlines now flying to Madrid direct from Birmingham Airport, there really is no excuse not to get on-board.

Arriving in the city the feeling within the streets and among the local people (of which there are around 3.5 million) is delightfully understated. With a blend of cosmopolitan cafe culture and rustic Spanish authenticity it’s the perfect place to sit and let life pass stylishly by. The problem is there is just so much to see! So relaxed is the city that it can be an effort to put down your coffee, open your guide book and start exploring the rich culture and amazing sights this historic city has to offer – believe me the architecture is stunning – even the city’s post office rivals Buckingham P a l a c e i n t h e stateliness stakes. We suggest emplying the services of a guided tour company for a personal walking tour so that you can get to know the city like a local.

The Plaza de Villa, the oldest square in Madrid, (15th

Century) is the p e r f e c t b e a u t y spot to take some t r u l y s t u n n i n g photographs and the stylish designer haven of Salamanca, just north of the city, is well worth a visit as is the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, home to works by Rembrandt and Dali. The piste d e r e s i s t e n c i a though has to be the Royal Palace of Madrid. Whilst the Spanish Monarchy no longer resides here, you are sure to feel like a king or queen yourself as you explore the breath taking gardens and exquisite décor of some 3,418 rooms. Yes, 3,418 rooms. Whether you want to take in the luxurious surroundings at your own leisurely pace or with the help of a tour guide, the Royal

Palace of Madrid, the largest palace in Europe, should definitely be made a priority for your trip.

All of that exploring should have built up your appetite and luckily on almost every corner in Madrid you’ll find a quirky bar serving Tapas alongside their drinks, anything from crisps and olives to chorizo and manchego cheese, eating and drinking really do go hand in hand in this city. One way to enjoy true Tapas in the city, and a must on every travellers list, is to visit the bustling indoor market. Crammed with artisan stalls all offering dishes from 1 or 2 euros the trick is to explore each stall’s offerings with a glass of chilled cava in hand. It makes for a truly magical dining experience which is as entertaining as it is filling. Visdit ove rthe summer months and you can enjoy their program of opera in the gardens too.

For those who prefer their dining a little more formal, restaurants such as Botin, the world’s oldest restaurant built in 1725 offers a menu to match its rich culinary heritage. This famed restaurant has had only two family owners throughout its 300 year history and was a meeting place for rebels during the civil war. Since then, it has welcomed the great and good, including Royalty and movie stars. Inside, much of its traditional charm is retained and its speciality dish of slow roasted suckling pig is certainly evocative but not recommended for more squeamish visitors. For a more bohemian vibe, the Central Café offers an affordable alternative. Perfect for a laid back lunch; a three course pre siesta feast costs as little as 12 euros. Loved by the locals, it’s also the place to catch some late night jazz in the city.

If jazz is not your thing Madrid offers a multitude of options for a top notch night out. Madrid’s infamous cocktail bar and cosmopolitan club culture is the ideal backdrop to a night of drinks and dancing. For a more authentic Spanish take on a night out on the tiles though, the Tablao Flamenco club is a hive of dancing, singing and clapping, all backed by classic Spanish guitar. If you’re more into people watching than toe tapping then Madrid has more bars per capita than any other city on Earth, so we can guarantee you will find one (or one hundred and one) which are more to your taste.

A must visit location for drinks day or night is the roof top bar at ME hotel on the Plaza Santa Ana in the centre of Madrid. Offering stunning views and a great gin and tonic (served in a huge balloon glass) the rooftop bar is stunningly stylish and very much the place where pretty people go so make sure you prepare by ditching the flip flops and sport something more moda.

It’s no surprise then that we’ve fallen head over heels for Madrid; it’s the perfect destination for couples and lone adventurers alike. With its safe streets, easy navigation, sophisticated bar scene and authentic local charm, you may arrive as a tourist, but you will definitely leave feeling like one of the locals. We can’t wait to get back.

On approach to Les Carrasses, driving through quintessentially French villages and endless miles of vineyards, it is easy to feel like you have taken a trip back in time. Greeted by the clean country air and friendly faces of the staff at the château it doesn’t take long to forget all about the hectic world that you have left behind and get settled into your new home from home.

The château and grounds which was built in 1886 has been beautifully restored by owner Karl and his family to keep the traditional charm whilst injecting luxury finishes and modern features. The attention to detail, top notch self-catering facilities and variety in accommodation make this an ideal place for families, couples and friends alike. Steeped in history, each apartment has its own fascinating story from refurbished stables to quaint gardener’s cottages and it is so easy to fall in love with their unique charm. We were staying in Le Grange, a quaint two bedroom cottage beautifully fitted out with stylish en-suite bathrooms and chic furnishings. What’s more, we had our very own garden area complete with swimming pool, BBQ and stunning country views. Honestly, I could have spent the entire weekend at the cottage but in the spirit of adventure I thought it best to explore.

With so much on offer at Les Carrasses from outdoor activities to wine tasting and even truffle workshops it was hard to know where to start. We opted for the truffle workshop with resident expert and aptly named Claire de Truffes! I must admit that I had reservations about my own level of culinary knowledge going into the session (I love my food but I am certainly no gastronome) but these worries were very quickly subdued when the workshop began in the traditional Languedoc way with a glass of wine.

The workshop proceeded in a similar vein with food and wine being the main motif. There was an abundance of truffles to go around and we were spoilt to a variety of tasters from truffle butter to Brouillade (imagine runny scrambled eggs with truffle flakes – tastes better than it sounds) and even truffle ice cream. As well as tantalising our taste buds, the workshop was an amazing insight into the truffle industry in France and for those who are interested in fully immersing themselves in the experience, Claire is even able to take you truffle hunting!

Speaking of food, Les Carrasses is certainly not short of edible delights, so when you fancy a change of scene from your cosy accommodation,

the château’s beautiful brasserie and bar areas are well worth a visit. On our first night (bellies full of truffle) we opted for a lighter dinner with the tapas menu. Sat in an atmospheric bar we were entertained by live music whilst we enjoyed the tastes of what seemed to be a perfect blend of Southern France and Northern Spain. The main restaurant area where food is served from breakfast onwards is equally well designed and mixes fresh ingredients with culinary expertise to bring an a la carte menu that would happily keep you coming back for the duration of your stay to try every single dish.

Although we ate more than our bodyweight in food on the trip, it is fair to say we worked at least some of it off. The heated outdoor pool overlooking miles of orchards was wholly inviting for our morning swim (allowing us more croissants at breakfast) and with bikes available from the château we decided to do some exploring. The nearest village Capestang provides a doable bike-ride from the château affording a leisurely route of beautiful scenery and calming canal sides. For those looking for more of a challenge the hills and riversides offer a variety of routes around the area.

Venturing further afield this region is bustling with activity, from the traditionally French market in Narbonne and shopping in Pézenas to wine tours and tastings in La Clappe and even shellfish excursions in Bouziques – staying in such an accessible location means that the Languedoc really is your oyster (pardon the pun)!

This truly is a destination that has it all, ideal for families looking to spend quality time together, friends after a break from their hectic schedules or couples seeking a romantic retreat. Whatever your reason, no excuse is needed to share in the 300 days of Languedoc sunshine (seriously – 300 days!) with almost daily flights from Birmingham and East Midlands Airport, it is easier than ever to chase the French sun.

TRY SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW THIS SUMMER

To many, a summer holiday means relaxing by the pool, sipping a cocktail and getting lost in a good book. To others, it can mean visiting famous landmarks, getting acquainted with the local cuisine or simply keeping the kids entertained.

However, more and more people are beginning to think a little differently and want something more from their holiday. They want to explore the path less trodden, away from the popular tourist trail.

Now, this doesn’t mean that you have to embark on some madcap trip to the middle of the desert or trek through the jungles of South America. You can still choose a Mediterranean coastal resort or a city break in Paris and get that different experience.

Take New York for example. Immediately, images of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Central Park spring to mind. But it’s still possible to go there and see a different side to the city that never sleeps.

To celebrate the launch of daily flights to New York JFK with American Airlines in May, Birmingham Airport took to social media to ask people who have been there before, to share their top tips and places to visit in the city. The response was surprising as many of the suggestions were not what you would expect. Here’s a little taster...

AMERICAN AIRLINES

American Airlines launched a brand new service to New York JFK from Birmingham Airport in May. Flights operate daily, arriving from JFK into Birmingham at 0710 local UK time and departing from Birmingham at 1000, arriving into New York JFK at 1255 local US time.

Through the American Airlines and British Airways joint business and oneworld airline alliance, this offers a British Airways code share, allowing customers to earn and redeem BA air miles and Avios points.

Flights are available at www.aa.com. The flights are operated using a Boeing 757 aircraft with 22 Business Class seats and 160 Main Cabin seats.

SMORGASBURG – A BROOKLYN FLEA FOOD MARKETLocated at East River Skate Park, Kent Ave. and N.7 St. on the Williamsburg waterfront, each Saturday Smorgasburg showcases over one hundred food and drink vendors from New York City. There’s enough choice to satisfy any pallet, from sizzling burritos and burgers to delicious doughnuts and ice creams. The markets are always open rain or shine.

WALK THE ‘HIGH LINE’

Inspired by a similar project in Paris, the High Line is a beautiful, 1.45 mile-long public park built on a disused rail line. It is elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side and offers a wonderful, alternative view of New York City. The park begins at West 34th Street between 10th and 12th Avenues, and runs to Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District, near the Chelsea Market (which is also worth a wander around). You can walk either way though and there are points to join the High Line along the way if you fancy just walking a smaller section!

ENJOY THE VIEW FROM TRIBOROUGH BRIDGE

The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, as it’s now officially known, gives a different perspective of New York to that of the more famous (and busy) Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge is accessible from various points as it connects Manhattan, Queens & The Bronx. There are walkways along all three sections of the bridge so you can take your time appreciating the views. The view of the New York skyline at sunset is certainly something to behold.

So there you have it. It’s still possible to head to those popular tourist destinations that are on everyone’s list, but still discover something new - something different. Perhaps it’s just a case of asking some of your more intrepid friends on Twitter and Facebook for inspiration!

The island is a ten by six mile spec in the South Atlantic, 1200 miles from the coast of West Africa. Until the Portuguese explorer Juan de Nova was blown there by the Trade Winds in 1502 it had lain undiscovered for around 14 million years, able to evolve its own unique flora and fauna untouched by the outside world.

But within a century of being found it had assumed an importance out of all proportion to its size. It was a key stopping point for the ships of the East India Company and other vessels - at its peak it serviced a thousand a year. It played a role in both slavery and its abolition: when the trade became illegal it was the base from which the British sought to capture the perpetrators and free their human cargo.

This Royal Mail Ship is the island’s lifeline. It carries in all its supplies and up to 150 passengers who range from returning or departing Saints (as the residents are known) to tourists with a taste for something different as well as, more recently, construction workers, entrepreneurs and conservation experts.

This means it’s a ship of two halves: the front laden with dozens of huge containers, the back a sun deck where we take dips in the little swimming pool and play quoits, shuffleboard, skittles and passengers v. crew cricket. In between are a couple of lounges with bars where we can listen to talks, watch films and play more games.

Sailing on the St. Helena has been like stepping back in time. Captain Rodney Young himself tells me that sometimes he surveys the deck and thinks this is still a bit of Empire on which the sun has not yet set.

It’s good preparation for the island itself which emerges from the waves at dawn like a dream. There is in fact something rather Alice-in-Wonderland-ish about St Helena as if everything has shrunken to produce a geography and a society in miniature. So within only 47 square miles of land mass there are barren deserts and lush cloud forests, a black sand beach and towering crags, rolling pastureland and peaks of up to 2700 feet. On a central ridge it’s possible to look in one direction on the empty moonscape of Sandy Bay and in another on sheep scattered fields which could be in Sussex.

Similarly in human terms for a population of 4,000, barely the size of an English village, there is a governor, a legislative council, a hospital, three primary and one secondary schools, a cathedral with a bishop plus places of worship for several different denominations, a police force, a prison, two newspapers and two radio stations.

What this means for the visitor is a wide range of activities. I seemed to fill almost every hour of the nine days I spent there while the ship sailed on to Ascension Island and back.

Two were spent walking: there are lots of trails graded in difficulty and

many routes have ‘post boxes’ which hold visitors books and rubber stamps. One of our walks took us to Lot’s Wife’s Ponds, Lot and his wife being giant geological features and the pool being a serene inlet protected by rocks from the crashing waves beyond and filled with colourful fish. The walk was an hour’s climb up a steep rocky hillside and half an hour’s descent down the other side ending in having to slither down a rope for the last 30 feet but more than worth it. It was one of the loveliest places where I have ever swum.

Marine life is a big attractions for snorkelers and divers – there are also several wrecks to explore – and fishermen who can chase tuna, wahoo and marlin. We were too late for the seasonal visit of whale sharks but 200 dolphins did their best to compensate, cavorting around our boat as we sailed out to the seabird colonies. I also had an enchanting afternoon watching wirebirds, the island’s only endemic bird so called because of its spindly legs and something of a conservation success story.

One day was Napoleon themed: a visit to Briars Pavilion where he stayed briefly when he first arrived, Longwood House where he lived for six years until his death in 1821 and his tomb in the pretty valley setting he chose himself. Though much of Longwood’s contents like the clothes and the death masks are replicas, the place is still resonant if melancholy. And it’s not every day one can stand on the exact spot where an emperor passed away.

Other experiences included a cookery lesson making tuna fishcakes, pumpkin stew and pilau – pronounced plo – a spicy legacy of St Helena’s diversity. There were also visits to the ‘world’s remotest distillery’ which produces among other drinks a spirit called tungi made from prickly pear. And finally I did what any self-respecting visitor has to do and climbed Jacob’s Ladder. Once a tramway for hauling goods up the cliff side this is now a terrifyingly steep 600 ft high staircase of 699 steps. Not wanting to risk passing out halfway

up, I took it very slowly, pausing every 50 steps and reaching the top in 28 minutes. I was pretty puffed up with pride but quickly deflated when I learned the record stands at 5 minutes 11 seconds.

Discover the World (01737 214 291; discover-the-world.co.uk) offers a 20-night self-drive holiday to St Helena from now until March 2016 priced from £3,451pp (two sharing) including 10 nights on the ship, 2 nights in Cape Town and 8 nights bed & breakfast on the island.

www.sthelenatourism.com www.rms-st-helena.com

ST HELENASome visitors go to St Helena for the hiking, some for the fishing, the diving, the wildlife or the connections with Napoleon. And some just go for the bragging rights, to be able to say they’ve set foot on one of the most isolated places on earth, writes Liz Gill.

milyEdgbaston High School for Girls was delighted to welcome

Dr David Starkey, one of the country’s most respected and well-known historians and television personalities.

An audience of students and parents gathered as Dr Starkey gave a lecture to mark the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, one of the most famous historical documents in the world, delivering a stimulating and thought-provoking lecture on the evolution of the charter into the foundations of an English constitution. He also signed copies of his new book Magna Carta which has been written to commemorate the anniversary of this seminal historical document.

This event is just one element of a broad educational offering at Edgbaston High School, where girls benefit from a 21st century education based on traditional values.

Dr Ruth Weeks, Headmistress, says: “EHS offers an enriched educational experience; pupils make excellent academic progress and achieve high standards in their work whilst benefitting from a strong and distinctive system of pastoral care where emphasis is placed on nurturing each girl’s strengths and raising self-esteem.”

“We wholeheartedly encourage our girls to be independent, to face new challenges and to acquire new skills. Combined with excellent teaching this unique approach offers our pupils a truly rounded education.”

EHS is an independent school for girls. One of the features of EHS is the continuity of education it offers: the Prep, Senior and Sixth Form

departments on site work together to cater for girls aged between two and a half to eighteen years. The School offers excellent standards of teaching alongside state-of-the-art facilities including the 600 seat Octagon performance space, a spacious Sixth Form Centre, swimming pool, athletics track and hockey field.

Girls can be admitted to EHS at any time during the academic year, not just at the beginning of term or at key entry points, and many new girls join without knowing other pupils but soon make friends and settle in the warm and inclusive atmosphere.

For further information about forthcoming open days, admissions, scholarships and bursaries please contact EHS on 0121 454 5831 or email [email protected]

Ah … picnics. The glorious outdoors, a checked rug on the grass and a wicker basket filled to the brim with yummy afternoon treats. There is nothing like a spot of al fresco dining – lazy, hazy summer days with your nearest and dearest munching fresh cucumber sandwiches and sipping Champers. We asked the Foodmarket team at HARVEY NICHOLS BIRMINGHAM for their top tips on guaranteeing the perfect picnic.

Fuss-free foods: Choose simple foods that taste great and are easy to pack. French bread, cheese, fruit, nuts, olives, pâté and cold meats make for easy picnics, don’t take up too much room in your hamper and you won’t have to lug too much home with you.

Pack It Up: More durable items should always be packed first and then fragile foods, such as soft fruits or pastries can go in plastic containers. Lay bread and crisps on the top so they don’t get squashed. If you have the extra hands, take a few different baskets – unpacking is all part of the fun!

Inject a little luxury: Picnics come in all shapes and sizes, from grassy pastures and urban rooftops to sandy beaches and music festivals. But whatever the location, make the most of the occasion with a little added luxury. From Champagne to truffles, be sure to unwind from life's hectic pace in style.

Don't forget the little things: Take a few large bin liners to place under your picnic blanket and then, at the end, use them to collect all the rubbish. Re-sealable bags, extra foil and a spare container are all great for any leftovers.

And don't forget essentials such as napkins, a corkscrew and a knife. Oh, and those all important condiments!

PICNIC PERFECTION!

sweetness, and together bring out the best in each other.

Tucked underneath Hilton Garden Inn on the edge of BrindleyPlace, The City Café could be easy to miss if you are not a hotel guest, but that would be a big mistake. With an array of dining options from afternoon tea, a monthly Indian buffet on the last Wednesday of every month and the a la carte menu, this hidden gem has a lot to offer the Birmingham food scene, writes dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL’S Tara Lopez.

Having battled the Aston Expressway en route to the restaurant, the plush seating and soothing background music was a welcome change of scene. The friendly restaurant staff were quick to bring my friend Sam and I the drinks menu (always a good sign) and with great knowledge of the menu they suggested we try a bottle of the Zinfandel Rosé which went down an absolute treat.

As mid-week diners in for an early sitting we were spoilt with a variety of very hospitable staff (including our charming waiter Lazaros) who presented us with an a la carte menu and readily shared his knowledge of the dishes and favorites. After a little while drooling over the menu we had made our decision...

To start, I had the Pan Seared Scallops which were accompanied by a gorgeous butternut puree. The scallops were cooked to absolute perfection and the puree was wholly complementary. I have to say these were the best scallops I have had in a long time and I was even charitable enough to let Sam try some; she didn’t have herself down as a scallop fan but was instantly converted.

Sam opted for the Duck and Orange Pate with a Calvados (apple brandy) dressing and ciabatta crisp. This dish was beautifully presented with delicate drizzles and garnish to boot but this didn’t stop us from demolishing it in seconds! The smooth pate was sweetened by the Calvados dressing, a perfect pairing if ever there was one. With generous but not overpowering servings, these starters set us up beautifully for the delights ahead.

The offering for main courses included some very tempting options with ample choices across vegetarian, fish and meat so, indecisive as always, we settled for three dishes between us. The Fillet of Seabass on a pea and parmesan risotto was delicate and well-seasoned and the accompanying risotto was fresh and light, a great summer dish. The speciality City Café Salmon and Prawn Fishcakes was of a generous size and burstin with gorgeous flavours. The sauce with which it was served worked perfectly with the dish and the addition of mussels was an unexpected treat, this dish is a seafood lover’s heaven.

We also shared the Crispy Duck Salad with mixed leaves, hoisin, sesame seeds and watermelon! We weren’t quite sure how we would react to this combination but we decided to be daring and it absolutely

paid off. Quite possibly my favourite part of the meal, this was a real treat for the senses. Sitting somewhere between sweet and savoury the duck and watermelon caused an explosion of flavours and is a combination that I will absolutely be stealing this summer.

Finally it was time for dessert and the pudding menu did not disappoint. The classics are covered plus some adventurous twists, for me it was between the Rum & Raisin Cheesecake with honeycomb ice cream or the Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart with orange sorbet. After much deliberation I chose the Chocolate Tart. The crumbly pastry and smooth rich filling was lightened by the zesty sorbet making it all the more easy to wolf down! For Sam there was no question – the Warm Chocolate Brownie Sundae came in a tall glass filled with plenty of hidden delights from toffee popcorn to chunks of brownie and chocolate sauce.

Leaving the restaurant somewhat plumper it is fair to say we were more than satisfied with our mid-week feast. At reasonable prices and with a great variety to choose from this hotel restaurant stands out in its own right, presenting dishes that look and taste gorgeous whilst tempting you to try something out of the ordinary.

y e a r fo r t h e restaurant scene in Birmingham and we are only half way through!

We’ve had some great bars come to city… The Botanist, Gas Street Social, Marmalade, Amantia and The Cosy Club and looks like we’ll get several more before the year is out.

The city has gone cocktail crazy so here is a round-up of the classiest and coolest places to indulge in those cocktails.

The much anticipated Praza by Pushkar launched this Spring on the site of the old Rose Murree on the Hagley Road and promises to be the sassy younger sister of the golden temple that is Pushkar Dining on Broad Street. Owner Rai Singh proving that there ain’t no party like a Pushkar party - complete with a full on Great Gatsby themed party.

The restaurant is in this gorgeous Grade II Georgian building and the striking interior is a mix of monochrome and copper but in keeping with its original features. The bar takes up most of the centre of the ground floor with small dining rooms off it, with a striking Praza sign framed by lightbulbs taking centre stage.

The cocktail offering is spot on: the martinis are superb. We had many Black Forest Martnis made with Stolichnaya Chocolate raspberry vodka paired with French black raspberry liqueur and cognac based orange liqueur, fresh strawberry puree and a dash of chocolate sugar syrup. The food is excellent too - a more concise menu than Pushkar but the standard and quality are still high.

PRAZA BY PUSHKAR

THE BOTANIST A truly unique concept has come to Birmingham with the arrival of The Botanist, a most charming and quirky bar/restaurant situated on Temple Street just between Colmore Row and New Street.

The concept is essentially cocktails and food inspired by herbs and garden plants, but its strengths are definitely the drinks offering, with herbaceous and fragrant fruity combinations in abundance across its extensive cocktail list.

We dined on a Bank Holiday lunchtime and it took some time to read through the drinks menu - a list of 95 craft beers, cocktails, mocktails, wines, martinis and gins. Ooh I could go on and on. I dived right in with a pretty Strawberry & Mint Martini, I like my cocktails sweet and this one hit the spot.

The kids had the Cherry Cola Drop, a mix of fruit juices, Pepsi and a sprig of fresh green rosemary, served in a jam jar, which they loved. One of the highlights of their drinks menu are the Watering Cans of Peach and Rosemary, White Peach Purée, Lemon Juice, Beefeater Gin for £24.95.

Foodwise it delivers too. For starters we had a selection of dishes; a portion of Calamari as well as a basket of chicken wings which came in a cute itsy bitsy picnic basket. For mains I had the pan fried Seabass filets with pico de gallo and spinach. Quite a simple dish served with chips. Hubby had the lamb hotpot with gravy and mash.

My boys ordered off the kids menu; a regular chicken and chips served in a gardening box, with lettuce in a watering can, ketchup in a wheelbarrow and a plant pot of chicken bites amongst a scattering of chips. It was “too cool for skool” apparently.

Their dessert was even better; the ice cream came in a bucket that you ate with a plastic spade and was served on a mini decking board filled with crushed ginger nut biscuit and mini marshmallows to look like pebbles on a sandy beach! Genius.

We love The BotanIst, there are so many interesting combinations to try that I’m going to have to become a regular to work through the rest of their extensive offering.

AnitaFresh flavours, seasonal produce and fruity cocktails are the order of the day with the new summer a la carte menu from Malmaison. And with a new-look, fully-refurbished bar and restaurant, there’s no better time to soak up the sumptuous surroundings, sip on something sparkling and indulge in a feast for the senses.

Before you order, make sure you take in the laid back vibes of CHEZ MAL Bar with its retro-inspired decor and lighting, including a cinema-style board, exposed brickwork and its chilled out music soundtrack, but not forgetting the classic Malmaison touch of luxury such as the leather stools.

By day it’s the perfect place for a shopping pit-stop with a coffee and croissant, and by night, as the lights are dimmed, it’s ideal for after-work drinks and a great meal.

Over in the CHEZ MAL Brasserie, the sleek wooden floors are complemented by blue leather booths, dark wooden glass top tables and smart chairs, with candles creating a chilled and relaxed atmosphere.Artwork of past Napoleonic characters add a regal touch to the walls, while wooden cupboards filled with Champagne bottles create a quirky look.

On the Summer of Mal a la carte menu you can find a host of light, seasonal dishes, which are available to diners midweek until 7pm and sees two courses for £19.95 or three for £24.95.

Starters include the summer minestrone soup with hand picked white crab, pesto and freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano and chicory tacos with pink grapefruit, coriander, fresh lime and red chilli. Mains are predominantly seafood-oriented with poached salmon, tuna sashimi niçoise and grilled tiger prawn linguine all in the offering, as well as a vegetarian risotto primavera loaded with the freshest courgette, carrots, tomato, peas and broad beans.

After being seated by our friendly waitress we were talked through the specials and offered a cocktail from the Summer Malchemy menu.

Options included the delightful sounding Pomegranate Cosmo, a blend of vodka, Pama pomegranate liqueur, crème de violette, Chambord and lime juice, whilst the Pineapple Daiquiri - rum, pineapple juice, lime juice and sugar syrup sounded like summer in a glass, however we opted for a bottle of the red Mal Plonk, a fruity and full-bodied Carignan-Grenache.

To start with we went for the smoked salmon with lemon, herb fromage blanc and pain de campagne and the Wye Valley asparagus Benedict. The salmon, which came served on a slate and thinly sliced was deliciously cool and fresh. The smooth punchy butter had a good smattering of herbs,

and rather than overpower the delicate fish, only served to complement it perfectly. The accompanying bread was thin and crisp which gave a pleasant, contrasting texture. Meanwhile, the asparagus Benedict was a delightful dish, tender and seasonal asparagus, with crisp, salty Bayonne ham and a perfectly poached egg.

Main courses were the grilled NY strip steak flatbread with a salad of sliced beef tomato, avocado, red onion, gem lettuce and French dressing. The perfectly medium pink steak was served generously sliced and its juices had soaked into the flatbread meaning all of the meaty flavour stayed on the dish. Large chunks of tomato and avocado gave the dish a light, fresh feel - the perfect summer dish.

The tiger prawn linguine came full of flavour, seasoned with garlic, and with cherry tomatoes and fresh peas running through it. The pasta was cooked well, on the softer side of tender, but in a good way. Sides of Parmesan pommes frites - crunchy fries with the slightest bit of skin left on and a smattering of Parmesan - were wolfed down and thoroughly enjoyed.

With stomachs fit to burst we almost passed on desserts, but the options proved too tempting to turn down. Continuing the summer theme, the Pina Colada sundae of coconut sorbet, Malibu cream, fresh pineapple and whipped cream sounded a delight, but we went for the more classic summer berry pavlova and strawberry

cheesecake.

The pavlova can only be described as a delightful parcel of the most divine meringue, topped with cream and fresh berries. The crispy outer shell revealed an outstanding soft and chewy inside - like a big fluffy pillow - with more cream and fruit. Simply spectacular.

The cheesecake arrived in a martini glass and did not disappoint on taste. The cheesecake mixture was creamy and soft, with an almost mousse-like texture, with thinly sliced fresh strawberries topping it off.

Friendly and helpful staff and a relaxed atmosphere added to a wonderful evening of fine food and drink and a promise to return soon.

LoveBrum launched earlier this spring to unearth hidden projects that make Birmingham a better place. The charity finds and funds local projects that deliver real change and have outcomes that can be seen, touched, enjoyed and loved. LoveBrum is made up of individual and corporate members, around 50 of which came together for the charity’s first networking event. The event was supported by and held at Malmaison and welcomed a selection of the city’s key business people to network and find out more about the charity. The key speaker was Emma Gray from Marketing Birmingham, who presented the latest news from the city’s visitor marketing organisation, including increased inward investment, new business relocation, and national/international press coverage for Birmingham. LoveBrum works with businesses to connect and promote their activity in the city, bringing like-minded people together to meet, do business and support charitable activity. In its first year, LoveBrum will promote 40 causes and raise a minimum of £120,000 to fund 12 projects. If you like the sound of it and want to get involved, sign up as a member for just £20 and every penny of your money goes straight to the causes pot. PREVIEW Fall in Love with Great Theatre this autumn at the Belgrade!

With Summer just around the corner and our Spring season already in full-swing, here at the Belgrade, we’re already looking ahead to an exciting Autumn and the arrival of not one, but two brand new shows premiering in Coventry in 2015.

For lovers of witty musical comedy with a contemporary t w i s t , M a u r e e n Chadwick’s sizzling new musical Crush bursts onto the Belgrade Main Stage from Fri 4 – Sat 19 Sept whilst families can look forward to an imaginative new musical adaptation of Ian Seraillier’s much-loved children’s novel, The Silver Sword premiering in B2 from Sat 26 Sept – Sat 3 Oct.

It’s 1963 and Dame Dorothea Dosserdale School for Girls has a proud tradition of fostering free spirits from all walks of life. So it’s a crushing blow when the new Headmistress turns out to be a reactionary tyrant with strict Victorian values – and top of her hit list are the two Sixth-Formers accused of “Unnatural Behaviour” in the Art Room... But hope is revived by a glamorous Games Mistress known as ‘Miss Givings’ and it’s hockey sticks to the fore in an all-out battle to save the school and the course of true love.

From the writer of Bad Girls, Waterloo Road and Footballers’ Wives, Crush is a sparky story of high-school rebellion and romance which gives a new twist to Mallory Towers and The Girls’ Own Annual. Featuring lashings of charm, team spirit and toe-tapping tunes, this quirky coming-of-age comedy promises to be a ‘jolly smashing’ night for anyone who has ever dared to dream!

For fans of classic family drama, Sell A Door Theatre Company bring Ian Serraillier’s timeless tale of escape, survival and homecoming to the stage for the first time this October.

Recently named as one of the top 50 children’s books of all time by The Times, this witty, fresh and inventive new adaptation by Susie McKenna and Steven Edis features original music and a host of loveable animal characters brought to life through an enchanting combination of puppetry, storytelling and song. The perfect theatrical treat for families and a must-see for fans of quality children’s theatre.

So whether you’re young in years or simply young at heart, there’s never been a better time to experience great theatre at the Belgrade Theatre. Tickets for both shows are on sale now.

Few businesses are lucky or talented enough to reach the thirty year milestone, but Henry Wong of Harborne, Birmingham has proved that lady luck is firmly on their side as they celebrate their 30th Anniversary.

With one year anniversaries, you celebrate with Paper; with thirty it’s Pearl, which seems appropriate as, like the pearl itself, the Henry Wong dining experience is opulent, exquisite and a thing of rare beauty.

Owned by Birmingham businessmen, Parm Rai and Bal Badesha, Henry Wong of Harborne was launched in 1985 at a time when Chinese fine-dining was in its infancy in Birmingham. Over the ensuing three decades, the restaurant and menu have adapted with the times and as tastes have changed. But one thing that has remained steadfast is the watchful eye of husband and wife team, Ricky and Marianne Wu – Executive Chef and Front of House Manager respectively, who have been at the helm since the outset.

Parm Rai commented; “I’m incredibly proud that Henry Wong of Harborne continues to stand the test of time and is celebrating its 30th Anniversary. We wanted to host this celebration, which is inspired by the pearl, so that we could say a huge thank you to customers and friends past, present and future for their unwavering loyalty in Henry Wong of Harborne”.

VIP guests at this invitation-only event included Veronica Kumeta of Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer – a local Cancer charity based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital – which is the Henry Wong chosen charity of 2015.

Guests were able to purchase tickets for a Grand Raffle, which raised over £2000 for the charity. Drink sales at the event were also donated to the cause. Lucky raffle winners won, amongst other prizes, a magnum of champagne courtesy of Laurent Perrier, pearl earrings; necklace and bracelet courtesy of Johnson Jewellers in Nuneaton and dinner for four at Henry Wong of Harborne. In addition to the raffle, guests were treated to a sumptuous Chinese banquet by Ricky Wu, which included contemporary dishes alongside signature staples. Champagne house, Laurent Perrier, created a special Pearl inspired champagne cocktail for the event.

paperworkDLUXE PLEASURE MEETS BUSINESS IN THE SECOND CITY

To be able to navigate through today’s business world you need to be much more than just proficient at your job. Today’s successful business demands that as a business owner you need to hold a masters in all things legal, tax, social media, human resources etc so to ensure your business is running in the right direction it is essential that you have a trusted team of Professional advisors around you. But what happens if you have

more advisors than a football team has players? And what can you do to make sure they are playing the same game the same way? Theses mixed messages can have an even bigger effect for those involved in a family business, writes dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL Business Editor Bart Dalton II.

CONTEXT FRACTURINGInternet, texts, blogs, tweets, and 24-hour news channels bombard us with information that plays into our business decisions. Each of your individual professional advisors also give you advice and guidance on a regular basis. This advice, provided in insolation, will be the best possible solution they can envision for the business challenge based upon the information they have at the time, and it may not take into account the other advice you have been given. It’s like going to the doctor and he gives you a prescription. Then you go to a specialist about another ailment and she gives you another prescription. The good news is the prescriptions will work. The bad news is that combined they could counteract each other and create a problem.

Each doctor and each prescription functioning alone would have been fine but taken out of context the medicines no longer serve their purpose.

Context fracturing comes to light when the advice conflicts or indeed negatively-affects another professional advisor’s area; such as a massive tax implication when implementing a legal restructuring of the business.

Having dealt with family businesses for the past 20 years I have seen fairy tales come true when there is coordination and a plan around the goals and desires of the business and its owners, and nightmares when issues and opportunities are handled in isolation. There is no malicious intent on the part of the professional advisor, it’s simply a by-product of your professional team working without clear sight (and understanding) of defined business goals.

This rang true for one of my clients who recently sold a business. The family was being looked after by a well-known firm of accountants who had been working on selling the business for years. The firm was looking at the business without much regard for the family and the people in the business. After a long and arduous process of selling, the result created a number of adverse situations both within the business and for the family members involved including overpaid tax and measurable loss in value of the shares. With some coordinated advice these adverse situations could have been avoided.

LEAVING A LEGACYSuccessful families looking to make a true lasting impression, a legacy if you will, need to focus and hone in what they do to make sure that they can take as many advantages to enjoy their wealth for generations. Family businesses have it more difficult than most. You usually shouldn’t sack your dad, put your aunt on final warning, or make your sister redundant. That

means that you need to use tools that can make people in the business/family adhere to a common written set of guidelines. Gullane &Co have created a tool kit for the clients that we work with to make sure that these tasks get a bit easier.

If you own a treadmill that is now a clothes drying rack, or a set of weights that are holding down a set of school books, then you know it is hard to stick to a routine and that sometimes even with the perfect tools to get you into shape it still takes will power and guidance. The tools listed below are great in theory but only effective if applied with professional guidance and focus.

FLIGHT PATHCreating a written document describing where things are going for you, your family, the business and what you think it should look like. This document takes time, but it will allow your teams to work towards where you want to be.

COMPANY WILLThis non-legal document asks you questions that will make it so that you hone your enterprise value. It can get rid of the hit-and-hope things that come from having plans in your head, and makes sure that partners and directors understand their responsibilities and how they fit into the exit strategy of the business, not only the day to day running of the business.

THE RULESThis really applies to families in business and outlines what is expected of the family members and what they can expect in return. It aligns with family values, work ethics, “how you can stay in the will”.

Once you have these documents the best course of action is to run a full family meeting with all the advisers. You need to make sure there is regular communication on issues that can have major influence on any of the documents to ensure that you reduce stress, increase happiness and avoid costly mistakes. Business is hard and families can be interesting, but to make sure your Family Business succeeds take the right tools and make sure that there are written and un-assumed goals, focuses and outcomes. Have a great summer and make sure that your Flight Path is constantly adjusted to guarantee you get to where you see success.

Bart Dalton II, Founding Director, Gullane & Co

Gullane & Co was founded on the principle that family-run businesses reach a critical “transition” stage requiring strategic advice and coordination of all professional services. Through your Family Office, the delicate process of ensuring adequate wealth transfers from the business to the family, without legal or tax complications, is underpinned with measureable goals and outcomes.

Retailers across the city have been honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony, organised by Retail Birmingham, the Business Improvement District (BID) that represents over 1,000 city centre businesses.

Hundreds of votes were received from the public, alongside nominations from store managers for the Retail Birmingham Awards 2015 with the top winners selected by a panel of industry experts, including Jonathan Cheetham, Chair of Retail Birmingham, and Assistant Director of Employment at Birmingham City Council, Shilpi Akbar.

Marks & Spencer on High Street was applauded in two categories; Retail Team of the Year and Retail Talent of the Year, presented to Mark Guy, advisor for the foods team.

Nirmal Madahar, general manager of House of Fraser was recognised as Retail Person of the Year, while the pharmacy team at Boots on High Street was crowned Retail Team of the Year.

Jonathan Cheetham, Chair of Retail Birmingham, said: “We had a terrific response from city centre shoppers who voted for individuals and businesses that demonstrated outstanding customer service.

“It was a very difficult task for the judges to pick the overall winners as the standards were so high and we felt all of the nominated individuals from both independent and larger retailers deserved recognition for their hard work. Congratulations to the winners, once again the awards have showcased their dedication in helping the city maintain its reputation as one of the UK’s leading shopping destinations.”

needed to help nurture local start upsStartup Direct is calling for new business mentors to support entrepreneurs in the West Midlands region following a strong first quarter of the year, which saw the creation of 50 new businesses, receiving around £350,000 in seed finance.

The partner of the Government’s Start Up Loans scheme, which pledges to match every start up business with a mentor, is calling for local business people to put their own skills and experience to good use by signing up. Mentors are asked to give just fifteen hours of their time over the course of the entrepreneur’s first year of operation, offering general guidance and support over the phone or face to face, as well as acting as a sounding board when needed.

Star51 is a Birmingham-born retro childrenswear business which has enjoyed huge success since its launch last year and is about to see its first collection stocked in House of Fraser online. Founders Banayoida and Paris Theodorou, were matched with local mentor Francis Hazeel, who has over 40 years experience in business. They catch up over the phone once every couple of months to discuss anything from manufacturing margins to fashion shows.

“I’m no fashionista but it’s business advice that Paris and Banayoida need”, said Francis. “I’ve been able to offer advice on matters such as hiring accountants and solicitors, and the cost implications of manufacturing in the UK. It’s nice to feel I can pass the knowledge of a lifetime spent in banking and commerce to a new generation of entrepreneurs. I’m learning about areas of business which are unfamiliar to me, but my age, knowledge and detachment mean I can add real value.”

Star51 founder Banayoida added: “Francis really opened our eyes to long term planning and taught us to look ahead in terms of our financial position. This has helped us maintain a clear vision for the business, rather than allowing ourselves to become bogged down in the day to day.”

Volunteer mentors are a vital part of the support provided to entrepreneurs as they set out on their start up journey. They receive formal mentor training and the opportunity to hone their own skills, expand their networks and gain valuable experience, which can often lead to Non Executive Director roles.

“The Birmingham start up scene is thriving and we’re working with interesting entrepreneurs in a wide spectrum of sectors, all in need of a mentor to help guide them through their first year”, said James Pattison, CEO of Startup Direct.

Based at the Innovation Birmingham Campus, Startup Direct is a partner of the Government’s Startup Loans scheme, offering loans of up to £25,000 at low interest rates (6.2% APR) over 1 - 5 years. As well as their own business mentor, entrepreneurs also have access to workshops, networking events and a business helpline. To find out more about being a mentor, visit: www.startupdirect.org or call 0121 629 0357.

SIMPEX EXPRESS SCOOPS T R A N S P O R T A W A R D A Birmingham-based business is celebrating having scooped a national industry award that recognises its achievements over the past twelve months. Simpex Express, a leading provider of international express and specialised transport, won the European Member of the Year category at the Transport Awards 2015, organised by Transport Exchange Group, which showcases the hard work and outstanding success that is taking place within the courier and haulage sectors.

Simpex Express’ Kate Taylor and Debbie Brown were presented with the award by Phil Simpson from Freightlink at the annual ceremony that took place at St John’s Hotel in Solihull, West Midlands, in front of more than 300 industry leaders and professionals from across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. The company was one of four winners that were nominated and voted for by more than 3,500 members of Courier Exchange and Haulage Exchange in recognition of their major success and best practice in terms of customer service, operational performance and delivery.

The results showed 77 per cent of workers in Birmingham eat an identical lunch each day although 59 per cent of those polled felt fed up or bored by their lunch choices.

But despite the humdrum fare, over half of Birmingham office workers say that lunch is usually the highlight of their working day.

With Summer finally here and temperatures starting to rise, one of the largest number of faults and complaints we get at this time of year is that the Air Conditioning isn't blowing cold. If you are used to air conditioning in your car and you do a lot of fast road driving where windows and other vents cannot be opened, it can be quite unbearable writes Kamran Saleem, Managing Director of Motorserv UK Solihull and Coventry.

The Air Conditioning system in modern cars contain refrigerant gas and a lubricating oil. During winter months, many people deactivate their Air Conditioning function and put the system in economy mode, or switch off the manual selector button. The seals in the system can dry out and crack, causing a leak which allows all the refrigerant to escape.

Some manufacturers have designed their systems so it’s actually awkward and a bit of a chore to even find the function to turn the air conditioning off, as the systems are generally now designed to run all year round. The air conditioning, if run on an automatic

climate control system, will regulate the temperature and will come on and off as required, usually in the winter this would be to aid the demisting functions.

In most cases, a re-gas or recharge of the system will do the trick. If all the refrigerant has leaked out of the system, most modern cars have a safeguard to not allow the compressor to come on to minimise damage to the system when running empty.

You can have your car re-gassed at most professional garages, and the operatives must be certified to handle refrigerants and carry out this process. Costs start from around £30 however some main dealers charge upwards of £100 for this privilege!

On professional machines, the quantity of gas removed and reinjected into the car will be dependant on the car’s make and model. A report will be generated to show how much was removed and how much was then re-added. The system will also pressure test the system and will not re-gas the car if there is a leak detected. If this is the case, a special UV dye can be injected into the system using the same machine, to enable the leak to be identified under the car easily. Repair bills will depend on what part of the system has leaked, and in the worst cases, the compressor may not be working at all and may require replacement, which can cost upwards of £300 (fitted), dependent on the make and model of the car.

Another common cause of an air conditioning leak, is road debris damage to the underside of the car or to the compressor / reservoir at the front of the car. The location of the components are dependent on the make and model of the car in question, however with a UV dye added to the system, the leak can usually be identified in the matter of a minutes.

At the time of an air conditioning regas, it is advisable to have a full system service including an anti bacterial spray out to every duct and vent inside the car. The end result is a really fresh and cool experience which will literally transform the ambient climate within your car.

HOW COOL WILL YOUR CAR BE THIS SUMMER?

What was the impetus for launching The Move Master?Having worked in Commercial Property since I left university, I’ve witnessed so many companies moving offices and it seemed such a stressful time for them, a real struggle. It was clear that they need structured help and expert guidance to project manage their move so The Move Master was born to fill that gap. We’ve been running for four years now.

How would you describe the commercial property market in Birmingham?Very buoyant! The recent news about HSBC moving their retail arm to Birmingham is great news and shows the City is a great place to move to and be in when it comes to big business.

What advice can you give others who are considering becoming self empoyed?Have a good professional team around you and don’t try to do everything yourself. Have an end in mind, what is the goal? Be proactive. Build relationships. Focus on what is important and take time out to recharge.

Do you switch your work mind off over the weekends or are you always on backup?Although my wife may disagree, work finishes at five thirty on Friday and starts at 0830 on Monday – but ideas do pop into my head over a weekend about the business!

You’ve recently become a Worcester Ambassador and are on the board of Second Chance Furnishings, are these things important personally or professionally?A big part of my life has been about helping others, and both are about my commitment to this. Second Chance Furnishings is a not-for-profit social enterprise set up and owned by St Paul’s Hostel, in Worcester. It’s a life skills project for vulnerable people collecting and selling low cost, good quality furniture and white goods. 100% of the profits go to charity and it fulfils a real need within the community.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?I would say my Grandparents and parents. They did a great job in raising us and always showed me how important it is to help others first and support your community.

What is the favourite thing about your job?Getting up every morning and knowing I get to choose what I want to do with a great team and great customers.

What is the biggest challenge that you face at work? The biggest challenge that we face is that many companies when they move offices think they will have the time and expertise to organise and manage their move. The reality is that an office move isn’t straightforward and takes lots of planning and coordinating. Even if they don’t use us I would say to anyone moving offices please seek outside help even if it just to pick someone’s brains. We are always on the end of a phone and here to help.

What are you most proud of in the last year? The Move Master had a great year and we doubled turnover. I became Chairman of Second Chance Furnishings in Worcester and recently became a trustee of St Paul’s Hostel also in Worcester. I’m very proud to be asked and to be supporting them.

How do you unwind after a hectic day at work?A good film and now the summer is here I like to be out in our garden relaxing and winding down.

What is your favourite restaurant? My guilty pleasure is Frankie & Benny’s. They are great with the kids and you always get a smile and great service. For the grown ups I am a big fan of Belle House in Pershore.

Where is your favourite place in the West Midlands? When I am working in Birmingham I always like to park the car in the Jewellery Quarter and walk down the various streets there. It is a hive of industry, some amazing buildings and a real slice of industrial history.

What quote do you think sums up your life?I saw a great quote recently by Winston Churchill. For me it just sums everything up – “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give”.

You can now fl y direct from Birmingham city to the real Madrid with Norwegian. It’s a great destination for stag/hen weekends, retail therapy trips or simply a romantic city break. In fact, few other capital cities can off er what Madrid does. A triangle of art that’s made up of three world-class museums including Museo del Prado, Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. A rich culinary scene with food from every Spanish region on off er, and you could also dine at the world’s oldest restaurant. When it comes to nightlife, Madrid is in a totally diff erent league as there are more bars here than any other city on earth. And if there is extra time, a trip to the legendary Santiago Bernabéu Stadium (home to Real Madrid) is a must.
