This issue celebrates this magazine’s first full year, and my how we’ve grown since our inaugural themed “Vision Issue.” A young project is filled with ups and downs, yet every turning point holds a lesson worth understanding. On DLXVRSN magazine’s editorial side, our biggest challenge has been our best: finding new ways to engage both women and men in the same publication. Our team that’s culled from across beauty and pop-cul-ture disciplines does its best to deliver content that’s a magically tuned balance of gender-neutral content. But just as humans have the capacity to feel different each day, some articles are more girl than boy, more boy than girl, and we’ve come to conclude that’s A-OK. Because though a wide portion of our readers are in fact female, they certainly find it nice to keep up with the happenings in mens-wear and in similar male-centric topics. So as we look toward 2016, our team is dedicated to bringing the most balanced fare for your reading pleasure. On The Cover: What makes a male model “high fashion?” As a seasoned fashion photographer and the publisher/creative director of this magazine, in my opinion he’s unique in height, build, and facial features…but what sets him apart is that no matter how you style him, his imagery sings. And once you can imagine any style on your model, you realize that it’s your model who is allowing you to translate his look to the masses. When high-fashion clothing and accessories look good on him, people will think things will look good on them, too. And that, readers, is how you are able to make any consumer feel like a luxury style consumer…even if it’s only while they’re reading your magazine.

Letter From The

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

…Which brings me to Jon Lewis. To DLXVRSN magazine, Jon Lewis is the epitome of today’s man’s man. When you think of the perfect male model for high fashion, luxury, and lifestyle, he meets runway criteria but then blows it away the moment he opens his thoughtful, introspective mouth. Our magazine takes pride in placing raw talent on our covers, and Lewis’s pending agency representation only proves how much we know he’s our guy! He represents the face of what we called in this issue the Millennial Man. Watch. Better yet, read about how outstanding he is as a business leader, artist and man.

Sincerely,

Tim Hancock

Lack. Sometimes it feels like the world approaches life (and the idea of fulfilling hopes and dreams) from a colossal place of lack.

I don’t have this. I don’t have that. I don’t have enough to buy this because I have to pay for that (…but what I really want is those).

Constantly pining for the brass rings beyond our reach means we aren’t living gratefully with what we have (…even though that’s hella easier when you’re on the happy side of a paycheck and your stack of bills is small).

I grew up in Massachusetts, close to the Cape and smack between Boston and Providence, RI, where my dad was a developer and my mother, a teaching assis-tant. Our finances ebbed and flowed with the housing market, and though some years sparkled, most didn’t. Yankee Perseverance didn’t stop us from aspiring, though. That’s because it’s good to want. Want makes you work hard. Sweat. Want makes you choose wisely to get what you desire. So does dreaming. And neither costs a penny.

Lack can’t erase dreams of dining, traveling and experiencing the shiny rings that make us look our day in the face and scream, “Yes!” And that’s what DLXVRSN Magazine aspires to do: help you say, “yes” … to everything. We’re your gateway to shiny things, no matter your address or circumstance, profile or paycheck. We give permission to feel like the star of whatever white-light world you imagine, honoring everything that makes people feel beautiful, pampered, accomplished, and rewarded for being the dreamers they are. With imagery that transports and

stories that entertain, from up-and-coming thousandaires to millionaires 10 times over, our readers can feel like whatever “aire” they want to be, one page at a time.

Lack? It’s a useless state of mind that DLXVRSN can’t compute. Possibility isn’t biased. And with the same seven days and 24 hours as the next guy or gal, we believe anyone can achieve anything. So from your aspirations to our pages, if luxe and brass rings are two of your things, DLXVRSN shines a light on the beauty you crave.

Thank you all for taking the time to be part of this visually stunning issue of DLXVRSN. We had a wonderful experience putting this work together for you to enjoy, and I think you are in for a real treat (…and by that I mean a delicious one).

In this issue, we had a chance to speak with renowned chef David Feau, a true master of his craft. Feau exudes a refined sense of class and deep admiration for fine food and even finer ingredients, while in pursuit of constant perfection. Chef Feau’s cuisine matches old-world techniques with the brilliance of new interpreta-tion. I’m thankful that he is allowing DLXVRSN Magazine to feature him and wish him continued success.

In future issues, I look forward to connecting with the countless culinary profes-sionals who influence our taste buds and evoke passion for the food we enjoy in fine restaurants, as well as that which we try to replicate at home (if we want to). Please enjoy this issue, and others are soon to be prepared, plated and served.

Best,

Scott Commings

A Word From The

CULINARY DIRECTOR

Sheer entertainment, cover to cover! That’s how I feel about the Winter 2016 issue, where we feature people at the top of their game who know what it means to inspire you, our readers, to put a little luxury in your life. It starts with being in the studio with recording artist Ciara, during an exclusive video where she dishes on her latest music. Then, we share imagery from DLXVRSN Magazine’s Creative Director Tim Hancock, who photographed up-and-comer menswear designer Stephen Ferber (we’ve got an article about him too).

Next? An interview with American Idol’s Season 4, top-11 finalist Mikalah Gordon; and in a twist, we turn the story-telling tables on our own Patranya, who talked us through the journalistic hoops she hopped through to get where she is. Entrepre-neurial icon Eden Sassoon (yes: of that Sassoon), who will be a television judge on the upcoming show Global Beauty Masters on the TLC network, shares some candid conversation about her rise. And this month’s featured chef, David Feau, is making French waves amid Beverly Hill’s finest tastes.

All said…what’s a fashion director’s job if not to showcase my own profound love for fashion, travel and finer living? I was honored to travel across the world to Dubai to work with famed photographer Shamyiam as he photographed me throughout that beautiful city and terrain. Back here and closer to home, this is-sue also features a special section for the ladies, where we’ve curated the best in beauty advice and products. As promised, we strive to never disappoint you, our readers. So now is the time—your time—to dive in and indulge in what we hope you’ll find as the premiere magazine for page-turning talent, taste, fashion, and living your finest life!

Sincerely,

Krista White

About This Issue

FASHION DIRECTOR

Page 18: DLXVRSN Magazine Issue NO.5
Page 19: DLXVRSN Magazine Issue NO.5

Growing up in Brooklyn, I always aspired to be cooler than the average person. I was obsessed with the images of cool men and women that graced the front pag-es of my favorite magazines and newspapers that made New York seem like the only place in the world, and the power of these gods and goddesses were unde-niable…even in my adolescence. Madonna, Grace Jones, Jean Michael Basquiat, Michael Jackson, Ralph Lauren, and Russell Simmons made being from New York seem otherworldly. Their accents, confidence, attitude, and style made me want to always check out the latest publication displaying their brilliance.

The fabric of cool was clearly defined. I was hooked.

Fast forward to today’s world. We are constantly on the go, following and liking, blogging and posting, tweeting and snapping. All that digital play makes tangi-ble, visual stimulation (aka: magazines) more important than ever. Magazines give us a chance to exhale and indulge in ways that we can touch, dream and expe-rience without always being there. Magazines can still give us the knowhow, the insight, the vision to live the deluxe version of our lives.

To be proud of something is extremely important, as it is a testament to hard work, excellence and consistency. To be able to inspire and motivate readers with the content we meticulously craft each quarter is what makes us come to work every day with a passion and desire to be the best publication in the world. Our readers are what we are most passionate about.

I am extremely proud to be the publisher of DLXVRSN as this magazine embod-ies the cool of an era that most thought was bygone. I’m here to tell you it is still here. Hold the magazine, read the articles, earmark the pages, circle the words. Cool is back.

on the sitcom Living with Fran with actress Fran Drescher, one of her personal idols. Gordon says that knowing Idol is coming to an end in its is bttersweet. “The best thing about the show is it brought people together in the most special way,” she says. “I am still very good friends with other contestants like Pia Tos-cano and Kim Caldwell. It’s been great fun to be part of the show even after my season. But the reality is, the show has changed over the years. Many people originally tuned in because of Simon Cowell. Love him or hate him, he made the show.” Gordon says she still has a lot of respect for Idol and wants to see the final season end with a bang. Though she will be watching, she has other big projects that will keep her busy. She is currently singing at the famous Sayers Clubs, both in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. And she continues to do stand-up comedy, her other passion, in both cities. Her ultimate goal? To launch a one-woman show. “My inspiration is someone like Barbra Streisand and her character in “Funny Girl”, whom I have loved and respect-ed since I was a little girl,” says Gordon. “I want to be able to sing, entertain and just wow the crowd…with material that is completely my own.” Asked to describe herself in three words,“funny, outspoken and genuine” top the list; and the older she gets, the more she wants to let herself be “raw” and “vulnerable” with the world…confidence that started, in part, with American Idol, and has shaped her into the person she is today. “I wouldn’t be here without American Idol, and I am excit-ed for what this show will do to the new crop of talents,” says Gordon. “I am fortunate for what it has done for me.”

American Idol, one of the most successful reality shows in U.S. history, will air its final season in early 2016. The show helped catapult many talented stars, including 27 year old Mikalah Gordon, who went on to launch an exciting ca-reer on stage and screen and credits the show with helping shape her life, and teach her lessons along the way. Gordon, a petite beauty and Las Vegas local, may be best known as one of the finalists on Season 4 of Idol…a finalist who was actually torn about going to try out. “I had just found out that I made the cheerleading team at my high school, and that was a big deal when you were 16!” Gordon says with a laugh. “I had to choose whether to go to Idol, [thinking] if I [made] it, I would not be able to cheer.” We all know Gordon’s choice. It was a decision she says that has changed her life in the best way possible. “It was like going to college for what I really wanted to do,” says Gordon, since singing and performing were her aspirations. Growing up in Las Vegas, she has been on stage since she was a little girl, performing at Strip hotels the iconic Stardust. It’s where she says she learned to love the glamour and glitz of the stage, which made being on Idol a dream come true. “Honestly, I couldn’t ask for a better start to a career. Yes, I was young, and at 16, I may have been too young to with-stand all the criticisms that come with a show like that,” she says. “But the exposure and the opportunities Idol giv-en me were priceless.” After her stint ended with Gordon placing 11th, she took a break from singing and went to work on television. She was a field correspondent for the Tyra Banks Show and the TV Guide Network. She also co-hosted American Idol Extra on Fox Reality. Gordon then landed a guest star role

A Conversation With Emmy Award-Winning Talent,

PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN

- By Julienne DeLeon

The road to success isn’t always a steady one, as Thai-born U.S. jour-nalist Patranya Bhoolsuwan knows well. Jumping through the typical hoops a young writer and anchor can face at the start of their ca-reer—getting her foot in the right broadcasting industry doors; over-coming the self-doubt that comes with being in the public eye; and evolving from a traditional journalist to a digital one with knowledge of social media and the Internet—she fashioned for herself an Emmy award-winning path across many of the country’s major markets. To-day, she’s a sought-after anchor in Las Vegas, where she is committed to following and telling good stories. Here, in her own words, she shares hers. My father was a diplomat for Thailand. Growing up in countries around the world, I always admired the international correspondents stationed around the globe. Their passion and talents on camera in-fluenced me to follow the path to journalism. Also, meeting people from around the world, traveling with my family, instilled my passion for storytelling. I came to the United States 20 years ago, knowing I wanted to be a news reporter. I studied journalism and political science at the Uni-versity of San Francisco where I did as many internships as I could at local TV stations. I knew the competition would be tough, especially as an international student. But once I graduated from college, I was offered a job as a producer and writer in San Francisco, and eventu-ally I moved on to work as an anchor/reporter in places like Redding, Cali., Reno, Nev., and in Washington, D.C. Determined, persistent, I wasn’t giving up on my dream. Today, my home station is in Las Vegas. [But] I am proud to be able to represent my native Thailand as a journalist in the United States. We have very few Thais who are making an impact on global audiences in a positive way. I feel blessed to be a role model for young people who feel that they don’t have what it takes because of who they are or what they look like. I want to show them that if you work hard and be kind ...you will make it. Although I believe the key to success is hard work and persistence (I live by the motto, “Do your best today and everything will work itself

out”), one of the hardest parts of being a reporter is to [have the strength to] approach people in the worst situations. [Yet] I believe it builds my skills to be more empathetic, to be able to relate to them at a human level. I feel my ability to connect with people is a blessing whether it’s on a good or a bad story. To that end, I recently earned my third Emmy award for my education news series focusing on school bullying, which revealed how many schools have hidden the fact that many of their students were bullied, as well as how many parents’ and students’ complaints aren’t being heard...to the point where kids have committed suicide. My work contributed to the changing of school district policy—to take bullying complaints more seriously— and also to the governor signing [the state’s] first anti-bullying legislation in Nevada. Other stories I have covered include animal cruelty, which really speaks to me because I love animals and would love to support more charities that help them. I also am passionate about children who are living with life-threatening illnesses. One of the most inspiring stories I have covered was a summer camp that gives sick kids a chance to forget about their illnesses. It puts life in perspective and shows that in light of such a tough situation, we can always see the good side of life. As a reporter you are always on 24/7…always thinking of the next story you want to tell. But I try to balance it with time with friends and family. I try to visit Thailand once a year to see my family and soak in the great food, shopping and beaches (my three faves!). I love spending time with my husband and my three adopted cats. And as a pop culture junkie and social media fanatic, I love trying out new restaurants and wandering through bookstores and reading everything I can! I believe my passion [for] reporting stems from two things: my love of storytelling and my love of people, in general. I believe everyone has a story worth telling and we can all learn something from each other.

town Los Angeles’ renowned Patina restaurant. In 2006, he became corporate executive chef, overseeing the West coast culinary operations. Féau became executive chef at The Royce at Pasadena’s Langham Hotel, which earned three stars from the Los Angeles Times and was named No.2 Best New Restaurant by Los Angeles magazine. In 2011, Féau was among the Top French Chefs in the Unit-ed States by Wine Spectator. And in 2012 he was nominat-ed for a James Beard Award and named “Best Chef of the Year” by Los Angeles magazine. But it’s Féau’s most recent post that might have L.A. drool-ing the most: In August 2015, Féau took a sought-after position at Wally’s Beverly Hills, where he now delights lo-cals and visitors with his French influences on fan-favorite Cali-cuisine. His talent is undeniable and his creations con-tinue to be among the finest...which is exactly why we’ve interviewed him.

You could easily say David Féau (fay-o) was destined to serve (...good food, that is). Growing up in France—cook-ing beside his mother and picking fresh vegetables from his father’s farm— Féau earned his degree in classic cuisine at L’Ecole Hotelière, Hélène Boucher. And after honing his skills under famed chef Guy Savoy in Paris, Féau became executive chef at his Bistrot de L’Etoile. He later served as Executive Chef of Le Miravile in Paris and was named one of France’s Six Best Chefs Under 30 Years Old by Le Chef magazine.

In 2001, Féau made his way to Lutèce, which earned four stars from Mobil and Forbes magazine, and later devel-oped its sister restaurant in Las Vegas, which earned four stars, again. He was also named Chef of the Year in 2003 by Taste of Vegas. Féau was a James Beard semi-finalist for Best Chef (Pacif-ic), and previously held the title of executive chef at down-

DLXVRSN: Do you see a chef in the making in any of your children? DF: Both of my children [have] a very good taste buds and can describe and [tell] the difference [between] acid-bit-ter-salty-sweet. And they can smell whenever I cook bacon or crêpes. DLXVRSN: What is your guiltiest pleasure when it comes to eating? DF: Chocolate. I can nearly eat a pound of chocolate if I have a strong desire for [it]. DLXVRSN: Do you have a favorite season for cooking? DF: Spring and fall are my favorite seasons to shop and cook for food. If I would place the seasons on a giant clock, I would place spring at sunrise as new day/new life in the garden; and autumn at 3 p.m. in the afternoon. That is when the light changes at this time of the year. The sunlight changes the color of the sky pretty much every half hour.

DLXVRSN: What inspired you the most as a child that still is important today for you as a chef? David Féau: As my family were farmers, I learned the sea-sons of produce and cooking with the seasons at home. DLXVRSN: How would you best describe your approach to being a chef? DF: It is a journey to become an experienced chef. The passion for food—but also, cooking with peace and happi-ness—has to be the drive. The reward will come with time. DLXVRSN: How much of your French cooking has made its way onto the menus at Wally’s Vinoteca, Beverly Hills? DF: I have brought my vision. [I] designed the menus and imposed French technique throughout multiple dishes on the menus. DLXVRSN: Black truffles or white? DF: Black truffle it is! So much more refinement and cook-ing possibility [with] it. The perfume matches the taste, and the flavor really amplifies as you cook it.

DLXVRSN: What is the most decadent you prepare caviar? DF: Caviar is very complex and top-quality caviar should be eaten with just a buckwheat crêpe and a bit of crème fraiche and lemon juice. Less is more. DLXVRSN: Who is the “chef” when it comes to cooking at home? DF: I am a chef for life, starting in the morning when it comes [to] preparing breakfast and lunch boxes for the kids… and I usually prepare dinner, as well.

– By Mariah Walton

This guy gets it. Out of Sweden comes legacy menswear designer Stephen Ferber, who is cutting-edge, trend re-inventing, and wise beyond his craft. As I call Ferber for our conference (and, by the way, he goes by “Stephen F,” the name of his flagship store) I am greeted with the sounds of New York City as his shop is in the Meatpacking District. Horns beeping, cars whipping by, wind blowing. This doesn’t seem to bother him in the least as we begin our conversation in what Stephen F calls “Swedlish.” (Three gueses which mix of two languages he’s talking about and the first two don’t count....) As we talk, I discover that what sets Stephen F’s shop apart from others is that he, as a designer, is all about bringing back the relationship-building part of business...something he says he learned and inherited from both grandfathers, one a furrier and the other, a tailor. From cultivating just the right face for his company, with celebrity involvement from the likes of New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist; super model Alex Lundqvist; Grammy Award-winning artist Shaggy, Stephen F’s stance is simple: “You can buy the people to create the brand, or you can create the relationship.” He’s clearly creating and investing in networking. Something to note…along with the rest of his insight below.

The Story of Opening a Menswear Shop A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, there was a gap in the market be-tween high-end big brands and the simple beauty of quality, tailored suiting. At least that was how Stephen F brilliantly conceived the idea to open a shop in New York...from his own need one day for a well-tailored suit. It led him to create a store that would allow him to be involved in every aspect of his shop,

DLXVRSN Magazine | 57

Page 59: DLXVRSN Magazine Issue NO.5

from the smell, to the music, to how his associates say hello and goodbye. His self-conceived personal touches are the heartbeat of this brand and the store is the body that helps act out a story. His story. And if it seems like part of his story involves motor sports, well, you’d be right. It’s something he’s deftly woven into his brand. “Gentlemen are more interested in fashion than before, and it’s easier to create the [fashionable] feeling for men when you add sports to the brand,” he explains. “My logo on a racing car ties both worlds together. My cli-ent loves motor sports, it suits them, it’s part of my client’s life. At the end of the day it can’t be all about clothing.”

Inspired Mind = Inspired Line Stephen F’s current line appears so humble yet sharp and fashion-forward, it’s hard to know what was behind his ideas. Unless you ask. “Well, I don’t sketch at all,” he admits. “I’m a terrible sketch-er! So I use technology to bring the design or vision into reality. This is the beginning of the way I help customers on their journey through fashion.”

And isn’t that precisely what fashion is? An ever-evolving, ever-changing journey? The idea that Stephen F’s clothing will promote you from style influencer to jet setter to life-styler is an epic feat that not all designers master.

And it makes it all the more refreshing to have his store-front a neighborhood option amid the likes of AllSaints, Comme des Garçon, Zadig and Voltaire, Helmut Lang, and other fashion royalty. His is a shop you can walk into, be warmly welcomed and feel serviced like royally, as well. All because Stephen F believes it worthy to invest in people…maybe even in becoming a trusted style advisor to one’s family, not just oneself. At the conclusion of our not-so-Swedlish conversation, Stephen F signs off with this: “I feel a little bit taller after this interview ecause you took the time to speak with me. Thank you.” Clearly a class act. Here’s hoping that his will be a destination we shall all visit educationally, personally and fashionably.

ply that message to what I do today…but for a while it also affected me in a negative way. I put a lot of pressure on myself, especially growing up in and around Hollywood. I just wanted to make my dad proud,” she admits…which was especially hard when her father sent Sassoon to what she remembers as “fat camp” when she was 11. “You can imagine what that can do to a girl,” she says. But as Sassoon got older, she came to understand that her father, who passed away from cancer 4 years ago, only wanted the best for her. As an adult Sassoon has fought her own personal demons, from alcohol-ism to unhealthy relationships. Now sober and single, Sassoon wants to teach her children that true beauty comes from the inside, and from accepting yourself for who you are. “True beauty is about being truthful about who you are,” says Sassoon. “That’s not always easy to do…to be completely vulnerable and show that to the world. But when you are raw and you show others that you are not perfect…that’s true beauty and strength.” Sassoon says that aside from work, her life would be incomplete with-out giving back. So in 2014 she partnered with “The Thirst Project,” a non-profit organization that works to bring clean drinking water to un-der-privileged communities around the world. She also donates time and energy to LUPASLA. Her best friend lives with Lupus and Sassoon and her family have supported the cause for years. “My father always led by example; now, I want to do the same,” she says. “I know everyday he’s smiling at me, by my side, pushing me to do more and be better.” Sassoon’s new goal? To keep expanding her business, to keep giving back, and to be the best mom she can be. “I am no longer afraid to take risks…to be my true self and to just go where life takes me,” she admits.

Born into a beauty icon dynasty, Eden Sassoon says her path to suc-cess has not always been easy. The 42-year-old single of mother of two who currently owns two lucrative businesses in Los Angeles talked with DLXVRSN magazine about her secrets to living a good life…a life, she says, that goes far beyond what the public sees from the outside looking in. “Create a life you can’t even imagine…don’t be afraid of the unknown.” Words from Eden Sassoon, the stunning Beverly Hills-based entrepre-neur who says she’s fearless about living her life (now), and credits a big part of that strength and focus (and, that quote, too) to her late father, businessman and philanthropist, Vidal Sassoon. “He was always pushing me to do my best; be the best version of my-self,” says Sassoon. Most of us are familiar with the name Vidal Sassoon, which over the years has become synonymous with hair care and beauty. Sassoon’s fa-ther built an American dynasty that led to shaping the plush hairstyles of many a head, as well as his daughter’s professional passions, causing her to challenge herself with, “What do you honestly want to do with your life?” “That question really had me asking myself where does my passion lie?” she says. “I knew I loved beauty, but good health and love for ex-ercise—especially Pilates—were also a big part of my life. I knew then what I wanted to do.” So in 2007, Sassoon opened Pilates Plus by Eden Sassoon in Los Ange-les. And in 2012, she launched the salon EDEN by Eden Sassoon, and has a second location on tap for 2016. “Growing up, I was really affected by [my father’s company’s] business slogan, ‘If you don’t look good, we don’t look good.’ In a way, I still ap-

A subject that is not discussed nearly enough is the topic of honor-ing social authority. Many of us, as professionals and leaders, are in positions where we have staff under us. And many of us have been in, or are currently in positions where we have persons in authority overseeing us. It is important that we learn how to effectively operate in each of these positions as modern professionals. It starts with en-suring we know what it means to honor. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines honor like this: honor noun hon·or \’ä-ner\• respect that is given to someone who is admired • good reputation: good quality or character as judged by other people • high moral standards of behavior Most individuals miss the opportunity for reward when they work un-der a person or an entity. They miss it because they think of this prin-ciple as a submissive act. However, when we honor, that is, “respect” those overseeing us, we actually set ourselves up for favor, promo-tion, position, and even increase. This is because the leader has a multitude of responsibilities and tasks that he or she must account for, and making this person’s life easier by not resisting or challenging their authority will get you the open door you may be desiring. Leaders very much enjoy those who help and assist them without an ulterior motive. In fact, they love it. I remember when I first moved to Las Vegas and was brought into a company that is among the crème de la crème of my industry. They had sought me out, and I was told I was “just what the company was looking for.” This company actually hired me twice, since the first time I declined its offer; however, be-cause I was not professionally mature and seasoned enough in busi-ness etiquette, I was let go from the company after only 90 days. I was totally caught off guard, discouraged and completely disheartened. I wanted to give up and move back to Philadelphia. It wasn’t until a few years later that I realized that the fault indeed was mine, which is why I was asked to leave. I had challenged my leader on her management style, and I had a very resistant attitude. I was not positioning myself to receive a full reward by making my boss’s life easier. On the contrary: Because I added stress to her load, she made a choice (and a wise one) to alleviate it. That’s why you want to be a pleasure to your leader to work with, not a grievance. A short while later, when I then became a person in authority, I had staff who were on both sides of this coin. On the up side, I employed

DLXVRSN Magazine | 73

a young lady who was amazing at this principle of honoring authority, and needless to say she got whatever she wanted from me! She was easy going, flexible and always made sure I didn’t forget anything. She was simply a fantastic employee who set herself up for raises, promotions and many pleasantries. Her time with our company was profitable, in part, because she respected her leader.

Personal anecdotes aside, please allow me, Dear Reader, to impart my 20 years of personal and professional experience in my industry to offer insight into more deeply enjoying your workplace or classroom by more deeply considering this concept of honoring authority:

• Authority is meant to work toward our advantage. • Our behavior has the potential to positively affect our workplaces. • We should foresee opportunities to serve rather than wait to be asked. • We should cultivate a voluntary attitude of cooperating and assuming responsibility…in ourselves, and those around us.

Now you may be thinking, “This seems to be all about the employee, but what about the employer?” I’m glad you noticed! Join me next issue when I share helpful tips and insight from the employer’s stand-point, which will highlight the art of becoming an effective leader while retaining the best talent.

bronze is the soft- spoken metal, you can still show the world know your inner wild child by adding even the smallest amount to your nails. (Try adding touches of bronze foil to one side of your already polished nails.) YES: From metal foil or polish to metal gems, expand your nail art with precious metals from the earth and you’ll add extra detail to your edgy style.

For centuries, one thing has been synonymous with wealth: Precious metals. Gold, silver and bronze have been linked to deities and royalty in early civilizations and used as currency from as early as 550BC. Gold, especially, with its warm reflective brilliance, denotes wealth and pres-tige in every country, culture and market, and in today’s contemporary fashion trends, gold lends an edginess to all aspects of your wardrobe and accessorizing. Looking for some edge yourself? Feeling a little prestigious? Preco-cious, maybe? Inject your nail routine with metallic luxuriousness and you’ll be fashion forward. Here’s how. • Show off your “inner you” with the reflective tones of silver, gold or bronze based on each metal’s color psychology. Gold connotes en-lightenment, and in its highest level inspires knowledge, spirituality and a deep understanding of the self and the soul. The color psychol-ogy of silver signals a time of reflection and a change of direction as it illuminates the way forward. It is fluid, emotional, sensitive and mysteri-ous. It is soothing, calming and purifying. Bronzes signify re-assurance, as it’s quietly confident but never the life of the party. • Each metal adds the perfect sense of elegance to your digits, but gold’s eye-catching, confident, and passion-inspiring qualities draws attention to itself. Use it in conjunction with cool and creamy sky blues to counter gold’s warm deep rich reflective qualities. • More of a silver person? Use it to outline florals in nude creams and soft pinks, since it adds that touch of wildness to even the subtlest de-signs. Silver’s reflective element works well as a highlighter, too. • If bronze if your baby, coordinate it with shimmering earthy tones such as a coppery-based lacquer or gel. But remember: Even though

7. Dairy is quite minimal for the standard Asian diet. There are plenty of reasons why we should ditch dairy, one most obvious is that milk was made to turn a 100-pound baby calf to a full-blown 1,000-pound adult cow. Now I don’t know about you, but that’s very eye-opening for me!

8. Chinese medicine teaches us to heal from within. While typical Western medicine usually provides an immediate cure with pharma-ceutical drugs, Chinese medicine has ingrained in us that health needs to be improved from the roots. Instead of providing drugs that may instantly conceal the problem and take away the symptoms, we often opt for long-term internal healing soups and medicine. This mindset is a huge factor in our health, as we listen and focus on our bodies more often!

DLXVRSN: Laser hair removal is a great option for people who are looking to simplify their life. Instead of spending time every day shav-ing or heading to the salon to get regularly waxed, a few sessions of laser hair removal can leave you with smooth skin for years. Who is a prime candidate for laser hair removal?

MAJARA: Laser hair removal works best on people who have light skin and dark hair. Because the laser uses the melanin in the hair to target the follicle, results tend to be best on fair-skinned brunettes. New laser systems have been developed that are effective on people with lighter hair or darker skin, but you should check first to make sure that the location you have selected for your procedure has this tech-nology available. The procedure requires both preparation and after care. You will be responsible for following the instructions given to you by your provider so that you can have the best results possible, with a minimum of side effects.

DLXVRSN: What is laser skin resurfacing? MAJARA: Laser resurfacing is a treatment to reduce facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars. The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. This popular procedure is also called lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.

DLXVRSN: Who Is a good candidate for laser resurfacing?MAJARA If you have fine lines or wrinkles around your eyes or mouth or on your forehead, shallow scars from acne, or non-responsive skin after a facelift, then you may be a good candidate for laser skin resur-facing. If you have acne or if you have very dark skin, you may not be a candidate. This technique is also not recommended for stretch marks. You should discuss whether laser resurfacing is right for you by consult-ing with the doctor before having the procedure done.

A walking epitome of beauty and knowledge, and an inspiration to those she’s impacted, Majara de Leon Stewart grew to love the old adage her mother ingrained in her: “Your beauty is your business.” Her mother Remedios Villagonza de Leon—a woman of show business herself—also believed in the importance of maintaining your body not only in health and vanity, but also in the way you carry yourself. Lit-tle did Stewart know, growing up in the Philippines, that her mother’s phrases would shape who she is and what she’d be known for. At age 17, Stewart took her shot at modeling throughout the Philip-pines but would later move to San Diego in 1982, where she became part owner in The Entertainer International, a nightlife and event news-paper for the Gaslamp district. With high demand for beauty advice, she wrote a weekly column answering readers and sharing advice on makeup, skincare and maintenance.

Today, Stewart combines her grit and passion for beauty to help others achieve their skincare goals as a certified laser technician in Beverly Hills and Las Vegas. Her practice, Face Shop, focuses on laser skin rejuvenation.

DLXVRSN: You’ve mentioned that the secret to aging gracefully and staying slim lies in the Asian lifestyle and diet. What are your eight tips for inspiration?

1.We drink tons of green tea. Green tea is a powerhouse when it comes to health benefits. Packed with antioxidants and metabo-lism-boosting properties amongst many other health benefits, it is a must for every diet.

2. Soy is a huge part of our diets. Plant-based proteins are all the rage at the moment, but we have been eating soy-based for millenniums. Miso, tofu, edamame and soy sauce… all are delicious and healthy alternatives to spice up your dinner table.

3. We get moving. In crowded cities like Manila we did a lot more walking on a daily basis, which is definitely a healthy habit to keep that waistline slim!

4.The sun is not our friend. I’ll admit, some of us are pretty extreme about staying out of the sun: we carry umbrellas and wear hats with UV face shield protection on sunny days. Though this may be a bit more conscious than necessary for some, the lesson learned is that we are absolutely religious about skincare and sunscreen. The sun in all its beauty is unfortunately the culprit to aging and skin cancer if measures are not taken, so slather on that SPF!

5. Contrary to our western counterparts, dessert for us is usually fresh fruits. If we want to get fancy, most Asian desserts are fruit, nut or tofu based. This radically reduces your caloric consumption, though a piece of cake is divine in moderation!

6.We love ginger. In stir-fry, in soups, in tea...we love our ginger. It stimulates circulation, improves the immune system and is even an aphrodisiac.

adversity growing up due to a few things that make me, well, “differ-ent.” Having to accept myself for who and what I am has been quite the challenge, but also incredibly rewarding. I feel like that which can seem like a great misfortune is sometimes life’s greatest gift. Beautiful things can stem from suffering. I wouldn’t change my circumstances for anything, now that I have the wisdom to recognize the benefits they’ve rendered. DLXVRSN: How do think you have grown as an individual?JL: I think maturity has less to do with age and more to do with ex-periences and general awareness. Things that have expedited my maturation process are factors that I cannot change, like my ethnic background. It’s made it nearly impossible for me to be ignorant to the terrible injustices that minorities still face on a daily basis, though I may not experience them asseverely as others. My family and I try very hard to be involved in all types of organizations, including rewarding scholarships to underprivileged youth, and I feel like by being pro-active in these types of communities, I’m able to have empathy and understanding, which has only contributed to my growth.

DLXVRSN: What’s your favorite restaurant in Las Vegas? JL: Chronic Tacos (and not just because my twin sister and I own it). I love Mexican food and we have the best!

DLXVRSN: Hobbies? JL: Other than painting, I enjoy hiking, eating, video games and horror movies. (Did I mention eating?)

DLXVRSN: As a male model, how do you feel in front of a camera? JL: In the beginning, I felt a bit out of my element, only because I’m usually the one trying to depict someone or something. As a painter, I’m constantly making sure I can accurately characterize the object of my inspiration at that point in time. I’m never the subject of some-one else’s vision being illustrated or, in the case of modeling, photo-graphed. Being a model allows me to explore a different side of myself and become someone else, and I love seeing the finished product...the collaboration between artists.

–Questions Writen By Elena Osorio

Some people write. Some cook. Some sculpt, some dance, some paint. Regardless of their chosen canvas, an artist is an artist is an artist, and Jon Lewis is one that seems to capa-bly command everything he creates (with a penchant for oil on canvas, thankyouverymuch). Here, DLXVRSN Magazine’s very first male cover model uses his other talent—truth tell-ing—to share his story in near poetic words. Millennial Man? You bet your life.

DLXVRSN: Who is Jon Lewis? Jon Lewis: Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever had to think about who I am in such a broad spectrum like this, but I’ll do my best!

I am the son of two incredible human beings and also a brother to two equally captivating people. I consider myself blessed having lived a life that is full of love, prosperity and abundant opportunity. I consider my-self quirky and easy-going, and always seeking to find the humor insit-uations...buton the other end of the spectrum, I also find myself com-plex and neurotic, somewhat of an over-analyzer and a deep thinker. It’s strange: I have a very business-driven logical, analytical side while still being rather child-like and whimsical, artistic and expressive. I feel like I’m always wearing one hat or the other. Resilient yet sensitive. Social but slightly reserved. I’m a million and one people, I suppose.

DLXVRSN: What drives you tobe more successful? JL: I’ll be frank with you: I’ve lived quite a fortuitous life. One that I’ve attained due to the tireless perseverance of my mom and dad. I feel like when children grow up in opportune situations like the one I was blessed to have, they typically go one of two ways: they use it as a crutch (or rather, an excuse to not work hard), OR they try to emulate the efforts of their successors and strive for more. I’ve only ever want-ed to make my family proud, so I would definitely say I’m more of the latter. You see, my parents were on the downside of advantage, and turned nothing into something. So if I’m starting with a little bit of something, my mindset is, how can I turn this into even more?

DLXVRSN: What has been your most difficult challenge? JL: I’d say my biggest challenge, just as a human being, is truly loving the skin I’m in. And by that I mean, self-love. I’ve faced a lot of personal
