What a week! I’vebeen under theweather, and this

time I’ve got it bad. Theremust be some sort of virusgoing around, because I’vecaught it full-force. You name

it, I’ve got it — severe bodyaches, a fever, a runny nosethat requires a box of tissues aday, an irritating cough and athroat that is so painfully raw.How pleasant, right?

Well, I’ve complained enough.

It’s no fun being sick, especiallywhen my workouts have beenput on hiatus (major bummer),but life goes on! There’s workto be done and good food toeat!

On the bright side though,

the best way to get better iswith nabe, better known assoul food, in my opinion.

Nabemono is a Japanesedining concept that refers to avariety of hot-pot or one-potdishes. The dish is cooked atopportable stoves at the tablewhere diners take the reins andcook a myriad of ingredients, from seafood to vegetablesand meat, in a pot filled to thebrim with a mouthwateringbroth.

So, this week, nabe is justwhat the doctor ordered! Thesoup soothes my throat andthe steam clears my sinuses. Here at the following Ono, YouKnow establishments, I’vecome alive once again, allthanks to their delicious nabe!

only cure, New Eagle Cafe isthe place to be. This local-stylediner hits the spot with its clas-sic favorites of oxtail soup, prime rib and more. And while

Founded more than a decade agoby Kenneth and Jennifer Chan, LittleVillage Noodle House was built withuniqueness in mind.

“We’ve always wanted Little Villageto be different from other Chineserestaurants in Hawaii,” says partnerDavid Chang. “There are countlessChinese restaurants in our state, sowe wanted ours to stand out. Here,we emphasize Northern-style (Chi-nese) cuisine, but we also featuresome Cantonese-style dishes be-cause that’s what locals are used to.”

According to Chang, Northern-styleChinese cuisine can be categorized asspicy, with little use of gravy, whereasCantonese cuisine is renowned for itsgenerous portions of gravy and fla-vors evoking a mild flair.

“Everything on our menu is good, but our signature dishes — as indi-cated on the menu — are exceptional. We also have a specials board that’s

worth looking at,” Chang states.“Family-style dining is our concept, inwhich everyone can share many dishesand try a bit of everything. Family-styledining brings people together.”

To begin, Chang recommends, PotStickers ($4.95 for four pieces, $7.75for eight pieces), which are hand-wrapped with chicken, pork or tofufillings and pan-fried or steamed toperfection. A dipping sauce infusedwith garlic, ginger and apple cidervinegar accompanies this appetizer.

With 113 items on the menu, select-ing a handful of entrees may seemutterly impossible, but OrangeChicken ($9.95) and Honey WalnutShrimp ($16.50) are two must-haves.

“We use a secret sweet and soursauce, made out of real orange juice,in our Orange Chicken,” explainsChang, noting that the superlativesauce coats each tender morsel ofboneless, deep-fried chicken.

DINING OUT | COVER STORY | LITTLE VILLAGE NOODLE HOUSE

Tucked away in the heart of Chinatown is a placeof solitude, where the palate becomes one withauthentic Chinese cuisine beyond compare. Here,

at Little Village Noodle House on Smith Street, patronsare welcome into a rustic, open atmosphere that is anescape from the bustling city life just outside the doors. The sound of chirping birds can be heard within theeatery as friendly servers quickly present plates of bothexotic and familiar fare to tables, where diners can’twait to dive right in.

As the restaurant’s No. 1 seller,Honey Walnut Shrimp presents a halfpound of jumbo shrimp tossed in agarlic and green onion cream sauce, topped with candied walnuts. Thisseafood lover’s favorite is the epitomeof sweet and savory.

Next on the list of seafood special-ties is Steamed Basa Fillet ($14.50), aflaky white fish doused in a home-made ginger onion soy sauce andgarnished with fresh slivers of gingerand onion.

“The taste of the fillet is very neutraland clean, and the sauce brings a niceflavor to the dish. It’s a healthy op-tion,” Chang says.

What’s in a name? Well, it’s onlyfitting that Little Village NoodleHouse dishes up an array of noodleclassics, including Seafood Fried Noo-dle ($9.95). This best-selling specialtyfeatures a plate of crispy chow meinwith gravy adorned with a medley ofshrimp, squid, scallops, shiitake mush-

rooms, carrots, won bok, baby cornand water chestnuts.

“Customers always compliment onthe fresh taste of our dishes, andthat’s because we use only the high-est quality ingredients, and we useabsolutely no MSG or artificial fla-vors,” Chang states. “It’s all about ourspecial cooking techniques. There’s aunique wok cooking style that bringsout the natural flavors.”

Finally, a show-stopper lies in Vol-

cano Pork Chop ($12.75), in whichdeep-fried pork chop is beautifullybattered and topped off with clovesof roasted garlic, wrapped in foil andignited at your table. Small flamesbring about a flair, and it’s ready tobe devoured.

Little Village Noodle House catersto eclectic diners, with a broad rangeof its customer base kamaaina andvisitors from the Mainland.

“We firmly believe that it’s our food

and clean environment that keepscustomers coming back for more. Wecater to the customer,” Chang adds, mentioning that a vegetarian substi-tute is available for all dishes.

“I hope for continued success forthe restaurant. For those who haveyet to try Little Village, I would likethem to dine here, and for our long-time, loyal customers, I want themto rediscover the restaurant and trynew items.”

Locals know exactlywhere to head whenthat special occasion

rolls around, especially ifthe number of guests isplentiful. Good thing Todaiin Waikiki, which openedin 1999, seats more than400 people and has a vastselection of food tochoose from.

And we’re not talkingjust any food. Todai hascrab legs, prime rib, varioustypes of sushi and yes, even desserts!

All desserts are includedin the buffet price ($11.98lunch Monday to Friday;$15.98 dinner Monday to Fri-day; $25.98 lunch Saturdayand Sunday; $26.98 dinnerSaturday and Sunday).

Manager Justin Kim gaveDining Out a glimpse intothe desserts that adorn the

lunch buffet tables. Oreo, Green Tea and

Mango Cakes are bite-sizedmorsels that will put asmile on anyone’s face.Their small size allows cus-tomers to not feel as guiltywhen indulging in thesetasty treats.

In addition to the cakes, there also are differenttypes of Jell-O, cheese-cakes, cookies, fruits, tartsand pastries, and each itemhas the presentation as-

pect of dining covered. The colors and arrange-

ment of each piece makefor an elegant, upscale lookthat reflects the taste andexperience.

Crepes are Todai’s mostpopular dessert item, ac-cording to Kim, and theycan be adorned with ba-nanas, strawberry, choco-late syrup and more!

During dinner, customersalso can indulge in themagnificent chocolate

fountain with assorteddipping treats such asmarshmallows, bananasand strawberries.

Since Todai is a family-oriented restaurant, it of-fers many desserts thateveryone in the family willlove. Are you a chocolatelover? The Oreo Cake andChocolate Fountain willdo the trick. Trying to eathealthy? Pick up somefresh fruit (and dip it inthe chocolate if you

wish). Want somethingrich? Snag a piece ofcheesecake.

Looking at the dessertselection, anyone with asweet tooth might faintto the floor. And that’sjust the lunch dessert se-lection. Todai offers amuch more expansivedessert selection duringits dinner hours, so makesure to stop in for that. The establishment’sdessert bar is no joke.

Who would think Shiro'sSaimin Haven would haveappetizers? But, the fact

they would have awesome home-made noodle dishes? Of course.

Since 1969, the family-friendlyeatery has dished out more than onemillion bowls of steaming broth andtender noodles, and with a massivemenu of local favorites, the inclusionof pupus is obvious, but hidden.

The appetizers are not segregatedonto their own menu section, butrather grouped with “sides” rangingfrom poached eggs to tofu. So, if your

pleasure is pork belly, mochiko chickenor even a large plate of noodles toshare, this is the section to ponder.

Most popular, and perhaps best, isCrispy Pork Belly ($4.35). The bakedand fried slices of pork began as aspecial, but customer demand forcedits inclusion onto the main menu. Nosurprise there. The meat is slowroasted for three hours to removemost of the fat and to begin the crisp-ing process. Upon order, the pork isfried, leaving the meat wonderfullycrunchy, almost like a crispy pork rind, and the fat remains sweet and chewy.

Homemade ponzu saucecompletes the flavor.

Country-Fried Noodles($7.95), available eight differ-ent ways, is a dish as old asthe restaurant and is oftenthe first item requested forlarger groups. Made in house, the noodles are mixed withpork, chicken, cabbage, whiteonion, green onion, char siu, luncheon meat and eggs tocreate an item that cateringmanager Bryce Fujimoto

says will create a small riot if takenoff the menu. It's that popular.

Another large plate to share is MakiSushi Roll ($4.15), in which rice, tuna, seasoned egg roll and fish cake arerolled in a seaweed wrap and servedin a portion not usually permissible forthe price. That shouldn't be too sur-prising, as everything on the menu isfairly priced.

Mochiko Chicken — tender, tangy andsweet — is just $3.95 and French Frieswith Gravy is $2.70 for an appetizer thatbegins with beef and pork drippings re-duced with carrots, onion and celeryand served on top of crispy fries.

Tasty, convienent and affordable, what more could you want?

Terri HefnerIt’s best known as thehome of world-famousMax’s Fried Chicken,

but Max’s of Manila isquite accommodatingwhen it comes to meet-ing customer demandsand expectations, andvegetarians are welcome. The dishes are cooked toorder here, and several ofthem can be requestedsans the meat (just askyour server), so you canjust let the chickens gohome to roost.

Asparagus and Tofu($8.95) complement eachother quite well, and atMax’s they’re sauteedwith wood ear mush-rooms (black fungus)laced with ginger and

sesame oil. It’s a colorful, appetizing yet simplepreparation that lets thefresh, tasty spears takecenter stage while themushrooms and cubes oftofu shine in their sup-

porting roles, making thisa sure bet for an encorethe next time you visit theeatery.

A cool, crisp salad fitsthe bill anytime, and Max’sUbod Salad ($6.95) is apopular concoction. It’smade with coconut heartof palm, which is crisp likebamboo shoots butsweeter (without that

sometimes unpleasantodor bamboo shoots canemit, which some peopledon’t care for). The heartof palm is cubed, mixedwith raisins, tossed in avery light, creamy sauce(which contains mayon-naise), topped withpineapple and served ona bed of fresh lettuce, soit’s crunchy, a little sweet

and a little tangy.So, there’s much more

here than fried chickenand crispy pata. Let’s giveMax’s a round of applause.

And right now, withgraduations in full swing,Max’s of Manila has itscatering menus readyand plenty of space avail-able for all those privateparties.

In the world of goodeats, sometimes youreally can have it all.

Such is the case at Ho HoChinese Cuisine inKapolei, where your din-ing experience will notonly be filled with tasty, satisfying dishes, but itwill barely make a dent inyour wallet. What couldbe better?

The buffet-style eaterybrings together a vastrange of Chinese and localflavors in its incredibly af-fordable all-you-can-eatbuffets (Monday-Friday:$9.95, lunch; Monday-Thursday: $16.95, dinner;Saturday-Sunday: $11.95,lunch; Friday-Sunday:$18.95, dinner). Ho Ho alsodishes out a la carte items, dim sum and manapua,

ensuring there’s some-thing for everyone to en-joy. The spacious diningroom is perfect for largeparties as well.

It’s a great time to takeadvantage of all the estab-lishment has to offer, see-ing as its lunch and dinnerbuffets just got sassierwith the addition of twonew menu items. Accord-

ing to general managerJames Ching, who helpedinspire each fresh creation, delving into Spare Ribswith Li Hing Mui Sauce is amust.

“This one has been pop-ular so far,” explains Ching.“Li hing mui is dried plumand it has a sweet andsour flavor.”

While many local pa-

trons envision li hing pow-der sprinkled over their fa-vorite childhood snacks, the restaurant sees it as avaluable sauce ingredient. Its sweet, salty and slightlytart flavor is a surprisinglywonderful complement tothe meat’s savoriness.

Ho Ho’s also is unveilingSea Salt and Black PepperShrimp today. Ching saysthe eatery’s shrimp dishes

fly off the buffet line, sothis Singapore-style varia-tion offers another way forcustomers to enjoy theseafood. “It’s crispy andhas a lot of flavor from thesalt and black pepper,” headds.

Regardless of the timeof day, event or craving,Ho Ho Chinese Cuisinepresents a quintessentialfeast for the whole family.

One of the best things about Hong Kong isthe food, so when I heard Anytime Cafeowner Ken Wong speaking Cantonese, I

had to ask if they are a Hong Kong-style restaurant. He said yes, and I immediately became excited.

But the restaurant offers more than just HongKong-style cuisine. There also are burgers, sand-wiches, and local favorites such as Loco Moco ($11.95)and Oxtail Soup ($11.95), as well as a variety of Italiandishes, including Pizza, Spaghettini and Risottos.

My personal favorites on the menu are French Toastwith Peanut Butter Filling-Hong Kong style ($6.95),Rice Soup or Jook ($4.95-$8.95), Green Onion Pan-cakes ($3.95) and Hai-nan Chicken Rice ($12.95).

Also popular is Shrimp Wonton Noodle in Broth($8.95), which can be substituted with shrimp noo-dle ($9.25) or served lo mein-style (add $2).

"The noodles and wonton peel are from Canada,"says Wong. "It's more of a traditional Hong Kong-style dish. I'm Chinese, I'm from Hong Kong, I knowwhat kind of noodles it should be and this is theclosest I've found and good quality, so we don'tmind the extra cost to bring it in."

Some must-try new specials include Bone In PorkChop ($14.95), which features a juicy pan-fried porkchop in a mushroom cream sauce served with veg-

etable and pasta; and Squid InkLinguine with Calamari ($16.95),which is a fresh squid ink pastatossed with calamari rings in ahouse marinara sauce.

For dessert, Snow Ice isamazing, and available inmango, strawberry, green tea, milk, honeydew and taro fla-vors. And the beverage optionsare a great reflection of a HongKong cafe, with Hong Kong-Style Coffee, Milk Tea and MixedCoffee/Tea; as well as Tea withlemon, Honey Lemon, Soy BeanMilk and more.

"We are a casual, family-friendly restaurant, andour prices are affordable,” says Wong.

possible product when heforgoes chopsticks anduses his bare hands todrop his tempura into thehot oil. Yes, chef Yukio

Kawahara of Blue WaterShrimp & Seafood, canput his fingers directly inhot oil.

“Nobody believes me. It’svery dangerous and youneed experience. But that’sthe reason we can make itmore crispy and evenlycoated,” he explains.

His tempura prowess isshowed off in his newShrimp Tempura platelunch ($9.95). Kawahara’suse of top-of-the-line tem-pura flour, cooled ingredi-ents, hot fresh oil and dar-ing technique ensures histempura stays crispy andlightly crunchy to the lastbite. The tempura, likeeverything else at theeatery, is made to order soit’s at its peak of flavor.

The plate lunch comeswith a variety of tempura:three pieces of shrimp, onepiece of ahi (or other freshfish such as mahi mahistraight from the auction),mushroom, zucchini (bothgreen and yellow) and po-tato. Kawahara even fries

up dill or parsley — some-thing you won’t find else-where in Hawaii or Japan.

“It’s my special,” he says. The dill tempura’s novelty

and pungent tang thatcleanses the palate is a de-light. Kawahara intention-ally fries the vegetables, fishand shrimp together so

that their flavors mingle. For added tastiness, dunkthe tempura in the house-made sauce. Bonito, sake, mirin and sugar provide justthe right accompaniment.Order the plate lunch withsushi (ahi or other availableingredients) or rice.

If you truly love tempuraand sushi, Tempura SushiRoll ($8.95) is just for you.Kawahara combines tem-pura shrimp, crab, egg, shi-itake mushroom, cucumber, ginger and eel (dependingon availability). Even whenit’s wrapped up in rice andnori, the shrimp tempura re-mains perfectly crispy.Kawahara explains that hissushi is very authentic, down to the rice: “It’s most

important how you cookthe rice.” Potato salad madewith egg and mayonnaiseis served on the side. Thereare no fillers, such as maca-roni, says the chef.

High quality, fresh, localingredients, prepared sim-ply in a casual setting hasbeen the truck’s recipe forsuccess. “Depending onavailability,” is not a dis-claimer, but rather a signthat the truck sources fresh, local ingredients as muchas possible and offeringschange based on that. Mon-chong or Opah ($9.95), fil-leted on site, seasoned withsalt and pepper, and servedmoist and tender, is a per-fect example of what BlueWater has to offer.

BREAST ($19,ON DINNER MENU)

Brasser ie Du Vinwith Alana Folen

The earthy flavors of the ratatouilleand chicken are infused with a

lavender balsamic reduction, whichpresents an essence of tanginessthat brings everything together.

Fresh baby arugula also addssome spice to the dish.

“It’s called airline chicken breastbecause the drumette and breastresemble a tail of an airplane,”Elder explains.

“The trick to ratatouille is that you haveto slowly layer your ingredients andsauté them separately,” Elder explains.“With a good ratatouille, all thevegetables should be crunchy, nothingshould be over-cooked. It’s served warm, not hot, so that the taste of thevegetables can permeate throughoutyour taste buds.”

“This dish was a playful inspirationoff of a special I ran about a year

ago, and we slowly perfected it towhat it is today. It’s a great lighter

fare for summer,” Elder says.

The charming cafes of France collide with paradise atBrasserie Du Vin. With a full indoor bar and seating area,in addition to a quaint outdoor patio, this Bethel Street

establishment boasts a plethora of French-inspired fare, includ-ing Pan Roasted Jidori Chicken Breast.

Executive chef Marco Elder plans to add this dinner favoriteto Du Vin’s lunch menu early next month, and highly recom-mends this rustic spread of ratatouille and tender chicken.

A free-range, organic airlinechicken breast is the focal point

of the dish, and Elder revealsthat the majority of the flavor isderived from the red wine brinethat soaks into every crevice of

the meat.“We boil red wine with salt, sugar and sage and let the

chicken sit in that concoctionovernight. This results in moist

and well-seasoned meat. Wethen pan roast it, and the sugar

brings about a nicecaramelization to the chicken.”

Ratatouille, a classicFrench side dish, is agorgeous medley oflocally grown dicedvegetables, includingfresh onions, yellow andred bell peppers, zucchini, eggplant and cherrytomatoes seasoned withwhite wine, thyme, garlic, salt and pepper.

While diners might notnecessarily associateWaikiki with quality

Indian food, that’s exactly whatMonsoon India, located in theDiscovery Bay building, servesup.

“Not too many people on thisisland know about Indian food,”says owner and chef ImranKhan.

“Indian food is somethingvery new here,” he says. “But thetrend is changing and the word

is getting out.”Monsoon India specializes in

authentic Indian cuisine from theNorthern part of the country.

To begin your foray into In-dian cuisine, a popular appetizeris Vegetable Samosa ($6.95),which is a deep-fried vegetableturnover with a potato andgreen bean filling.

“It is one of the most popularIndian appetizers,” Khan says.

One of Monsoon India’s mostpopular entrees is Coconut

Chicken ($17.95), which featuresfresh coconut cooked with curryand is served with rice.

“It’s rich, it’s thick and it has alot of flavor to it,” he says, notingthat it is not too spicy. “Thechicken has been added to thesauce and it has been cookedto perfection, so all the flavorsblend really well.”

Khan also says Palak Paneer($15.95), which is a combinationof spinach and cottage cheese,is not to be missed.

Located in Waikiki, Monsoon Indiaenjoys a customer base from all overthe world.

“They give us the best compliments,”owner and chef Imran Khan says. “They tellus that it is the most authentic Indian foodthey have ever had.”

And the food maintains its authenticity forgood reason: Khan moved to the Islandsfrom Pakistan in 2006 to attend school. But hesoon found that his passions were elsewhere. When he first arrived in the Islands, Khansays that his cooking skills were limited. Buthe got hired at an Indian restaurant, where helearned the ropes from notable chefs.

“Over time, I grew to love it,” he recalls. Before long, Khan was creating his own

recipes drawing on inspiration from the foods heknew growing up.

“I was raised eating the same type of food,” hesays.

With his creativity and experience in working allparts of the kitchen, Khan decided to start his ownbusiness. After owning another Indian restaurant pre-viously, Khan opened the first branch of MonsoonIndia in Kihei, Maui.

“After about two years, we expanded and openeda Monsoon India in Waikiki,” he explains.

The restaurants have been so popular that, soonafter, the Waikiki location opened its doors in 2010,another one in Lahaina soon followed.

“We are looking forward to expanding even more,”he says.

Khan says that one ofthe things that setsMonsoon India apartfrom other restaurantsis its dedication tousing fresh ingredients.

“We do not useany frozen itemshere.”

Monsoon Indiapurchases all of itsproduce from localvendors to ensurethat it’s serving fresh, quality vegetables.

“It’s about healthy cooking, and it adds more flavorto the food,” he explains. “To keep the flavor in thefood, you use fresh ingredients.”

For those who like it hot, Khan saysLamb Vindaloo ($18.95) is the wayto go.

“It’s not even just spicy it’s actuallysuper spicy,” he says. “But for thisdish, the spicier it is, the more flavor-ful it is.

“You also can get it with chicken orshrimp,” Khan adds. “It is a traditionalbrown, onion-based curry with atouch of tomato.”

To end your meal on a sweet note, the restaurant offers traditional Indiandesserts including Gulab Jamun($5.95), or dried milk dumplings, which are deep-fried in a honey sauce, and Rasmalai ($6.95), which are

Ichiriki Japanese Nabe RestaurantThe home of all things nabe is none

other than Ichiriki Japanese Nabe Restau-rant, where robust flavors and qualityfresh ingredients stand in the forefront.Co-founders Issei Kazama and RikiKobayashi opened the doors to Ichiriki’soriginal location on Piikoi Street in 2006,and to this day, the Piikoi store is my go-to pick when I’m craving boiling pots ofnabe or Japanese hot pot.

According to Kazama, nabe is generallyconsumed in Japan during the cold wintermonths to provide warmth. Yet, a thoughtentered Kazama’s mind: “Why not servenabe all year long in Hawaii?” That simpleinquiry broke the stereotype of nabesolely being a winter dish.

With a slew of nabe selections tochoose from, it’s hard to decide on whatto order. Although, when I’m con-gested, Angry Goma Nabe ($23.95) isthe cure-all.

As the restaurant’s spiciest nabe, hintsof jalapeno, habanero peppers and a bitof sesame swim in the broth. It’s time toclear the sinuses! Add your choice of meat(it’s usually paired with pork, but I preferribeye) and the assortment of vegetables, salmon, shrimp, chicken and homemademeatballs to the mix and what you get isa filling feast with fantastic flavor and azestful kick.

“Angry Goma Nabe has been on oursecret menu for about a year now, withalmost a cult following. We thought itwould be a good time to add it to theregular menu, since so many people havebeen asking for a spicier nabe,” Kazamastates.

Mushroom Nabe ($24.95), with a grandassortment of seasonal mushrooms, alongwith Seafood Nabe ($28.95), a shoyu-based nabe served with Madagascarshrimp, calamari and scallops, are myother Ichiriki favorites. The list goes on,but to make it easy for any Ichiriki first-timer, know that you can’t go wrong here.Everything is delicious!

The interactive dining experience ofcooking nabemono never gets old. Freshingredients, an amazing broth and aportable stove at your table are all youneed. And just when you think you’vefilled up on everything in your hot pot, think again. Ramen or udon is brought tothe table at the end of your meal to enjoywith every last drop of soup!

Dear Hearts,

Staying positive consistentlyis a difficult feat. It’s like trying to stay coolin intense summer heat. For those who do, justknow you make this worlda better place.Accomplishment is achieved if you can crack a smile off a grumpy person’s face.

or years, diners from all across the island have been coming to Aiea’sfamed Ige’s Restaurant & 19th Puka. Popular for its local-style, comfortfood, the eatery now welcomes its customers to stop by for lunch

Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Ige’s new lunch service offers a multitude of benefits for its diners. “True to what a lunch wagon is all about, the process is completely hassle-free

and easy,” says Ron Ige, owner of Ige’s Restaurant & 19th Puka. “Instead of havingtable service, customers can come in, order their food, pour their own drinksand we will call them when the food is ready.”

Equipped with multiple television screens and wide-open tables that can holdupward of 300 diners total, the restaurant serves as the ideal place for gatherings, small to large.

“Our customers can pick up their food while watching television or amongfriends within the comforts of a spacious, air-conditioned setting,” says Ige.

Similar to the dinner menu, Ige’s lunch menu features an impressive variety ofexpress menu items with daily specials. Local favorites include Shoyu Pork ($9),a teriyaki-style roast pork glazed with a shoyu marinade, as well as SesameChicken Salad ($8.50), served on a bed of fresh greens and vegetables with ten-der grilled chicken breast in a special house-made teriyaki sauce.

In addition, with the presence of a new chef, the restaurant now features freshfish such as Fish Tofu Patties ($10), made with Aala tofu and water chestnuts. Many customers also enjoy Ige’s special Furikake Ahi ($12), which is coated andgrilled to medium in a spicy teriyaki oyster sauce.

“We constantly monitor the fish auction and go at least twice a week,” explainsIge. “We get the freshest catch available, and nothing is ever frozen.”

In addition to self-service lunch, those interested also may use the restaurant

to host private parties for up to 100 people. “Right now, we have a lot of calls coming in for

graduation parties or work events and fundraisers,”says Ige. “We have lots of space to entertain aswell as a full bar, so the restaurant works as theperfect venue for any gathering.”

In harmony with the restaurant’s relaxed, easy-going attitude, Ige’s regularly hosts live enter-tainment and music for patrons to enjoy whiledining. On Wednesdays, diners may participatein open mic night as well as listen to jazz. The eatery also features Flashback Fri-days, with music and dancing from the’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Customers mayview the entire entertainment sched-ule online at igesrestaurant.com.

With its new lunch wagon serv-ice up and running, Ige’s hopesto open its doors to even moremembers of the local community.

“We are a family-run opera-tion that is dedicated toquality and customer serv-ice,” says Ige. “In all thatwe do, our main focus isto serve delicious foodand have a good time.”
