Do Downtown Greenville is an initiative of several downtown merchants,

restaurants, and hotels in partnership with the Greenville Journal. Our goal is

to communicate to residents and visitors alike everything our downtown has

to off er. Downtown Greenville presents opportunities unlike any other with

noteworthy shops, remarkable restaurants, visual and performing arts venues,

beautiful green spaces, and more. e redevelopment vision of the City of

Greenville is to have “a thriving Downtown which is recognized nationally

as an example of a ‘state-of-the-art’ community in which to live, work, and

play… which serves in itself as a national attraction.”

Mission accomplished.

Downtown Greenville is home to more than 90 shops and 90 restaurants.

If you can’t fi nd it here, chances are it can’t be found!

Another component of Do Downtown Greenville is a focus on all things

local. Shop local. Eat local. Support local. When you shop local, you help

support our community. Many of our friends, neighbors, and families are

employed by, or own, these businesses that bring special products, services,

and variety to Greenville. Make the commitment to shop local this holiday

season and know the joy of supporting our community – one of the greatest

gifts of all.

Fall for Greenville rocks … and there’s plenty of country, funk and blues, too!

Variety defi nes the menu at the Upstate’s favorite street festival. Billed as “A Taste of Our Town,” St. Francis Fall for Greenville celebrates the city’s best restaurants while serving up six stages of free entertainment all weekend along. Slated October 12-14, this three-day extravaganza is amongst the best times to be had in all of South Carolina – in fact, it’s offi cially designated one of the Southeast’s Top 20 Events.

Organizers have cooked up a sweet musical schedule with a little something for everyone. Main Stage acts are Justin Townes Earle (blues/americana), Ponderosa (rock), Orgone (funk), ese

United States (rock) and Lucero (alt/country). Other downtown stages feature Jill Andrews, 5th and York, Will Hoge, Calvin Edwards Trio, Apache Relay, Wanda Johnson and Chatham County Line. Plenty of homegrown favorites are on tap, too, including Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’Blues, e Work, Cravin’ Melon and e Piedmont Boys, just to name a few.

A Family Stage and a Kid’s Area featuring rides like the Ferris Wheel, Tijuanna Twister, Swing, Carousel and Whirlybird make for a wholesome abundance of good, clean fun.

Fall for Greenville’s true fl avor come via food booths lined all along Main Street. e event showcases some 200

menu items from 39 popular restaurants, so come hungry and try samples ranging from international fare – think Krautspatzle, Shrimp Ceviche and Tandoori Chicken – to Southern favorites like Pulled Pork, Fried Green Tomatoes, Crab Cakes, even Doughnut Burgers.

Child-friendly options include Pizza, Cheese Quesadillos and Chicken Sandwiches. And don’t forget to save room for dessert – Red Velvet Whoopie Pies, Fried Bourbon Bread Pudding, Candied Bacon Brownies, Gourmet Cupcakes galore and much, much more.

Foodies hungry for a little know-how will enjoy “In the Kitchen with Charleston Cooks!” demonstrations. A Wine Garden off ers budding oenophiles

a look into the pleasures of the vine; a Beer Garden pours some of the regions best craft brews while the Beer School gives a lesson in brewing.

For those craving a little competition, there’s the always hot Jalapeno Pepper Eating Contest. e restaurant industry competes for bragging rights in the Waiters’ Race, Absolut Bartenders’ Mix Off , Silver Spoon Award (a taster’s choice determined by professional chefs) and Tent Decorating.

e most coveted prize, perhaps, is the People’s Choice Award, which is tallied as festival-goers vote for their favorite place. Get one ballot with every $20 worth of Taste Tickets – remember, every vote counts!

e medium might be paint, stone, metal, glass or clay, but all the best art incorporates one common element. at’s because true artists pour a little of themselves into everything they create.

“ ere is a lot of soul in our work,” says Judy Verhoeven, a Greenville-based collage artist who uses a collection of found papers as her palette. “We use our hands, and our hearts, to make something … there’s a piece of the artist in every piece of art.”

than a destination, visual art may be best appreciated as a creative process as well as a finished product. And that’s the true beauty of Greenville Open Studios, an every-November event that offers an intimate look into the working spaces of 140 local artists to see not only what they do, but how – and where, and why – they do it.

Presented the weekend of Nov. 3-4 by the Metropolitan Arts Council, Open Studios showcases painters, potters, metal smiths, welders, sculptors and more, all working in their personal studios within a 15-mile radius of downtown Greenville. The self-guided tour – a look into the sleeves-rolled-up, hands-on process of making art – is a unique opportunity to learn about techniques and procedures as well as sources of inspiration.

“Open Studios is incredibly educational,” says Verhoeven, who delights in demonstrations and also encourages visitors to try their own hands. “It helps the public appreciate the effort that goes into creating art – people are often amazed at how time-consuming it can be.”

Now in its 11th year, Greenville Open Studios draws visitors from across the Southeast – everyone from avid collectors to first-time art buyers to people who’ve never

before set foot in a gallery. It’s all about generating a dialogue between artists and the public.

“In some ways, it takes the mystery out of art,” Verhoeven says. “It gives people a way to connect an image with the process.”

Welcoming visitors into her attic studio – some 150 or so come by during a typical Open Studios weekend – is a powerful marketing and sales opportunity for Verhoeven. “My work sells pretty well,” she says, acknowledging that meeting an artist in person may make visitors more apt to collect his or her work. “This is a very good weekend for me as an artist trying to make a living.”

Greenville Open Studios helps the community recognize local art as an appealing – and very affordable – option over mass-produced prints. People too often assume original artwork is out of their price range, but the tour’s participants all offer pieces at varying price points.

Greenville Open Studios runs Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 4, from noon-6 p.m. Maps for the self-guided tour are available through the Metropolitan Arts Council.

When it comes to fashion, Kerry Ellett says there’s no place like home.

“Greenville has some wonderful boutiques,” she explains. “They carry designers I love, the selection is great and there’s always something new. And you get THE best customer service from people you know, whose opinions you can trust.”

Shopping local keeps your look fresh, says Ellett, an account executive at Smoak PR. So last fall, when she heard about the inaugural Fashion on the TOWN, she gathered a group of style-savvy girlfriends and headed downtown for the after-hours retail crawl.

“It was so much fun – we just store-hopped and took advantage of all the sales,” Ellett recalls, noting each boutique offered something special like drinks, hors d’oeuvres and music. “All of the stores were festive, everyone looked really cute and we kept running into people we knew. We treated it like a cocktail party – Fashion on the TOWN is the perfect mix of shopping and socializing.”

Ride, Shop, Taste & Win!Fashion on the TOWN 2012

promises double the fun, with twice as many retailers – and some of your favorite restaurants – participating.

Festivities kick off with a VIP Party on Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 6-9 p.m. at the Lazy Goat and River Place Bell Tower; tickets are $50/person or $80/couple. The after-hours fashion crawl – which is free and open to the public – takes place Thursday and Friday, Oct. 4-5, from 4-10 p.m.

Simply pick up a “Passport to Fashion” at any sponsor location (SEE LIST ON PAGE 8), then take it along as you travel from store to store, collecting a stamp at every crawl stop you make. A trolley running between JB Lacher Jewelers on Main and MUSE Shoe Studio on Augusta makes it easy to make it most everywhere.

The more stamps you collect, the more times your name goes into the hat for giveaways. A minimum of seven gets you entered one time; a max of 43 – one stamp from every stop – gets you entered 15 times. Up for draw are $100 gift cards from Fashion on the TOWN retailers and a $500 gift card from skincare. Grand prize is an all-expense-paid Shopping Getaway to New York City.

During the week of Oct. 1-6, the Passport is also your ticket to Taste of the TOWN specialty cocktails and appetizers at some of Greenville’s favorite restaurants.

The Perfect Mix Of Shopping And SocializingCreative Opportunities

Fashion on the TOWN is a creative way to support the local economy, according to Kate Banner, Sponsorships & Events Manager at Community Journals, which produces the event in collaboration with the City of Greenville. It’s a positive for retailers, Banner says, because it brings shoppers directly to their door, increases location awareness and provides a strong branding opportunity. Plus, it makes for an awfully fun Girls Night Out.

Musette Stern enthusiastically agrees. “I love that people have a reason to visit all of the boutiques at one time,” says the owner of MUSE Shoe Studio. “There is a lot of synergy between downtown retailers so it’s exciting to participate in such a coordinated event.”

In anticipation of Fashion on the TOWN, Stern has perfected her Pomegranate Martini. Footwear designer Blake Vaigneur will be at MUSE to showcase shoes that are beautiful, ladylike … and comfortable. Makeup artists from Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier will be on hand to touch up your face before heading back out to enjoy the happenings at the other 42 crawl stops.

Don’t forget to have your Passport stamped at every destination, reminds Ellett, who won 2011’s grand prize shopping trip to NYC.

She and her best friend stayed in SoHo, enjoyed the restaurants and nightlife – “and shopped all day long.”

“New York was fabulous,” Ellett says, but her excursion to what many consider the fashion capital of the world hasn’t dulled her enthusiasm for going local. “Oh, I still love shopping in downtown Greenville.”

HALLOWEEN

Food for Kids, Mast General Store, October 14-31Mast General Store-Mast Store is partnering with Merrell Footwear to provide weekend Food for Kids. Did you know that in each of our communities one in four children is at risk of being hungry? The only meals they have may be the ones they eat at school. October 1-16, for each pair of Merrell shoes purchased, they will fill a backpack with weekend food for a child. Our local partner, Loaves & Fishes, works with local schools to find those children that are at risk. Each weekend, a backpack filled with snacks and easy-to-fix meals are sent home. The backpacks are returned each Monday to be filled for the next weekend.

UNCORKED at The Cook’s Station: Wine & Tapas TastingThe Cook’s StationOctober 16, November 20, 6-8pmAt this wine & tapas tasting, we’ll pair 4 wines with heavy appetizers from our kitchen. Other tastings are just about the wine, but we’re about food, fun, AND wine! Once you pay for this class, you receive wine discounts the entire month: 10% by the bottle, 15% by the case of our featured wines.
