The End is Near in Europe1. After liberating France The allied forces
closed in on Germany from the West.2. The Battle of the Bulge was Germans final
offensive, hoping to break through the Allied lines Hitler sent all his forces to attack , their ultimately failed.
Significance: It was only a matter of time before all allies would meet in Germany
1. From the East Soviets quickly swept through Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria & the Balkans
2. In 1945 the Soviets entered Germany and met US and British forces at the Elbe river
Significance: Europe is know completely liberated (VE day)

targeted Japanese held islands. Using a system of Island hopping

Significance: The US was closing in on the mainland of Japan
2. After two long and costly battles against Japan(Iwo Jima & Okinawa) The US leaders knew that
the war in the Pacific would last a long time and cost many American lives
Significance: leads to the decision to use the Atomic Bomb
3. Harry Truman, replaces FDR after his sudden death and makes the decision to drop not one but two Atomic Bombs
a. First on Hiroshimab. Second on Nagasakic. Millions died on impact and millions died from radiation

Significance: VJ day Japan Unconditionally surrendered on Aug. 14
