• 1: Fold paper in so your “door’s close”
• 2. Fold hamburger
• 3. Fold hamburger
• 4. Open up and you should have 8 individual boxes
• 5. Number your boxes: follow teacher example

• You will rotate around the classroom to record information for all 8 phases
• You will count off from 1 – 8
• You will start in the station that matches the number you counted off
• You will rotate when I blow the whistle
Foldable Activity
New Moon – Phase 1
• The side of the moon that is facing the Earth is not lit up by the sun.
• At this time the moon is not visible.
(we can not see it in the sky)
Waxing Crescent –Phase 2
•A small part (less than 1/2) of the moon is lit up at this point.
• The part that is lit up is slowly getting bigger.
First Quarter – Phase 3
•One half of the moon is lit up by the sun at this point.
• The part that is lit up is slowly getting bigger.
Waxing Gibbous – Phase 4
•At this time over half of the moon is lit up.
• The part that is lit is slowly getting bigger.
Full Moon – Phase 5
•The side of the moon that is lit up by the sun is facing the Earth.
•The entire moon is lit up at this point.
Waning Gibbous – Phase 6
• The moon is now not lit up all the way by sunlight.
• The part of the moon that is lit is slowly getting smaller.
Last Quarter – Phase 7
•Half of the moon is lit up by the sun.
•The part that we can see lit up is getting smaller.
Waning Crescent – Phase 8
•A small part of the moon is lit up at this point.
• It is getting smaller each day until we can no longer see it (New Moon Again!)
•The cycle keeps repeating
• You will receive a handout with 8 pictures
• Using the notes inside your foldable, you will correctly match images of the moon to the correct phase
• You may work with your table partner only or you may work alone
