Do Now: Talk with your partner and come up with a definition/explanation of:

1. Evidence2. Analysis

Points to think about:How are they different?

What might you include in each?

Today’s Case Study: Han Dynasty (China) and Gupta Dynasty (India). They are both Classical age civilizations!)

Today’s Case Study: Han Dynasty (China) and Gupta Dynasty (India). They are both Classical age civilizations!)

The Gupta Dynasty, 320 A.D..-550 A.D.

How are my paragraphs supposed to be organized?

• Topic sentence (your claiming something!)• For example….• In addition…• As a result…. (Consequently, etc)• Concluding sentence

What will the next exam consist of?

Let’s look over the assignment sheet. Now’s the time to ask questions and pay

attention!

What is meant by evidence? • SPECIFIC pieces of information that back

up/support the CLAIM you made in your topic sentence

• In other words, your evidence shouldn’t be talking about something random!

• Later, you can use quotes as evidence but there is a right way and wrong way to do this…to be continued….

Writing Tips (examples)• What is not evidence?

• “Governments that used Legalist and Confucist ideas were successful. For example, the Qin Dynasty, which followed Legalism, was successful. “

• What is not analysis?– No more saying: “This shows…” “This was due to…”– Hinduism and Buddhism each promoted the idea of nonviolence. This

shows the society was peaceful.

• Sentences I never want to see you write:– Legalism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Hinudism, etc ARE NOT PEOPLE.

Therefore, don’t word sentences like: “Hinduism and Buddhism believed that…” “Legalism didn’t like the people.”

– “Throughout history,” “ Since the dawn of man,” “A long time ago”– Hinduism and Buddhism were similar and different in many ways

What is meant by analysis? • After you provide evidence that proves your topic

sentence correct, you need to talk about why this evidence/argument is important!

• How did “x” impact the people back then? (did gov’t change? Society? Advancements? Promote peace or unity or war, or trade?)

• Analysis = your interpretation• The answer won’t be in “black and white”

somewhere. You need to think about the connections/impact with your own brain!

Application time!

Which society had a more successful

golden age—the Han or Gupta?

From the following slides, How would you describe the Gupta Empire?

How did the Guptas govern relative to the Han?

• “The climate of this country is warm and equable, without frost or snow. The people are very well off, with out poll tax or official restrictions. Only those who farm the royal lands return a portion of the profit of the royal land. If they desire to go, they go, if they like to stop, they stop. The kings govern without corporal punishment.”

- Fa’xian; 5th century A.D; a Chinese Buddhist monk visiting India

Why can we trust this source?

Important leaders under the Guptas:

• Chandragupta (yes…another one) ascended the throne and united India (around 320 A.D.) after it had been in constant warfare since the fall of the Mauryans 400 years before

• His son, Samudragupta, used violent tactics to expand the empire, but highly supported the arts

• They both ruled with a more laid back practice!

Achievements in Society• Under the Gupta, people excelled in Math!

– Created a number system we still use today (but it’s called the Arabic number system)

– Developed a decimal system and the concept of zero

Medicine

Developed a Smallpox vaccine 1000 years before Europe!

Could set bones and even perform minor facial plastic surgery!

Achievements in Society- Stupas

Chess was developed under the Gupta!

India and Buddhism under the Guptas• India:

– The Guptas tolerated other religions but Buddhists will slowly get kicked out

– Buddhism will still influence art and architecture…but this marks the beginning of Hinduism’s come-back

– Consequently…they flock to SouthEast Asia where both Buddhist and Hindu scriptures and architecture will influence those people

So, how would you describe the Gupta?

• Analysis: As a result of having a secure trade network, the Han were able to establish trading partnerships with other formidable empires like that of Rome. The Han promoted cultural diffusion through this network—many Roman emperors used silk as part of their clothing. The Han were also able to form monopolies of some comodities like…
