Welcome... to the latest edition of Community Voice!Front Cover Quiz: Spot The Local Landmark...How many of you can spot the landmark from our surrounding area featured on this July issue front cover? If you think you know the answer please send your entry to Graham Tyers at The Voice, c/o 57 High Street, Ibstock, or email him at: [email protected] The winner (drawn first out of the hat of all correct entries) will receive a “Full English” for two at The Old School Tearooms, High Street, Ibstock. Good luck!
Last month’s front cover quiz answer and winner:We received a lot of correct entries this month and the answer is, of course, Grace Dieu Priory. Located near Thringstone, the independent Augustinian priory was founded around 1235-1241 by Rohese De Verdon and then dissolved in October 1538. It currently has a reputation as one of the most haunted locations in the midlands!
The first correct entry drawn out of the “hat” is Karl Watson, who wins the Full English Breakfast for two at the newly, refurbished Old School Tearooms. The draw was made by Angela White and assisted by Glenis Brotherhood from the tearooms.

Children at Holmsdale Manor Nursery in Ibstock had an exciting time celebrating the Queen’s birthday!
Before the big day, they practised singing ‘God Save the Queen’ and learnt to bow or curtsey! They also made various decorations including bunting and a sign wishing the Queen a happy birthday.
On the day of the party, a very special visitor arrived! The Queen (aka Janet Woodhouse) joined in their special picnic,
visited the nursery rooms, and sat on the throne which had been specially prepared for her. She also received a bouquet of flowers.
Thanks to all the children and staff for their hard work in making the event a success, thanks to our cook, Karen, for all her hard work preparing the special picnic, and an extra special thank you to the Queen for making an appearance!
Her Majesty was obviously a very busy person on the day as The Queen (actually Beryl Horton) also turned up at a wonderful event at Snarestone which was held to celebrate her birthday.
The Royal Weekend turned out to be a great success - the Saturday’s event attracting over 110 villagers, and the Royal Breakfast over 80 people.
The events were completely organised by the villagers - with financial support from the local Snarestone Pub ‘The Globe’ and from Minorca fund.
HAPPY 90th BIRTHDAY YOUR MAJESTY!
page 7 the voice
A wonderful day celebrating the official birthday of Her Majesty The Queen took place at Ibstock Baptist Chapel on Saturday 11th June.
Stalls, a bouncy castle, live music and much more was available for everyone who attended. Fun was the order of the day as over one hundred visitors turned up to enjoy everything on offer - including a free buffet. The sun shone as a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce brought a very special visitor along to enjoy the festivities – Her Majesty The Queen (aka Mrs Claire Burdett).
In honour of Her Majesty’s birthday ninety guests released balloons in red, white and blue and a special book entitled ‘The Servant Queen and The King She Serves’ (with a preface written by The Queen herself) was presented to different people who had played their part.
The Reverend Roy Monk said that everyone had a wonderful day and thanked all the people who had worked so hard to make the event a success.

Make more birdies with a sharper short game...As we approach those glorious summer evenings, it’s time to start thinking about honing your short game. Getting your wedges in order will increase your confidence, help you get closer to the hole and increase your chances of making some pars and birdies.
First thing is to get the clubs heads clean and get all the dirt out of the grooves, you won’t get much control with clogged up grooves. Also inspect your grips, if they are damaged or slippery get them replaced. A wedge line-up that covers key distances is a must. If you’re unsure I recommend you contact your local golf Pro for advice on wedges and lofts.
One of the quickest ways of improving your scores is to do some dedicated work on pitching. Start with the basics. Normal grip, feet below shoulders and ball in the middle of your stance. From this position hit some full shots and record how far each of your wedges travel. Replicate the process while gripping further down and narrowing your stance. Hit a series of shots swinging your arms back to 10 o’clock and through to 2 o’clock. Note your distances for each. You’ll now have two yardages for every club.

Jo’s BlogA disappointing month of golf, in terms of performance, with comments reminiscent of school report days, ‘could do better’ and ‘room for improvement’, springing to mind. When the driving went well, the putting didn’t and when the putting improved, the fairway woods let me down. But that’s golf for you! On the positive side, the short sleeves and cropped trousers are out and I could not think of a better way to spend a Tuesday (Ladies Competition Day) and, there’s always next month!
Tracy’s BlogWell we are in full swing within our golfing calendar, and this last month has seen the start of many county competitions. Two years ago our club won the ladies county foursomes title beating Lingdale in the final. It was a great achievement. Unfortunately last year we didn’t do so well and got knocked out in the second round by last year’s champions.
So this year we are more determined than ever to get to the final. Our first match was against Lingdale and it was a close game but thank goodness we came on top and won by 4 holes. The reason I love this format is that it is a team effort and the camaraderie between us is great.
Willesley’s two best golfers, Tracy and Jo along with myself, went to the Leicestershire Golf club to play in the County Scratch Shield. For a change it didn’t rain, but the scores were terrible. We played early in the field and were all thoroughly despondent when we came off the course, and thought that there was no way we could have done very well. So, imagine our surprise the following day only to find out that we had come second overall and were only 3 shots off the lead. The thought that went through all of our minds and is a common one in golf… “if only”!
Suzanne’s BlogThe Spring is my absolute favourite time of year for golf. The bluebells in the woods are absolutely spectacular this year at Willesley and as they were my Dad’s favourite flower, he got me into golf so they are particularly meaningful for me. Who cares if you’re having a bad round when everywhere looks so beautiful! However… I’m very pleased to say that I had my best round for 25 years last week, the round that we all dream of when just everything seems to fall into place. It was a particular honour to win the Coronation Cup during such a significant year for the Queen. My handicap has been cut by 2 shots which could pose a bit of a challenge but I’m absolutely delighted. So the moral of the story is keep going, that perfect round is just around the corner!

Sence Accounting, who operate from offices within Ibstock Business Centre are actively involved in running a monthly ‘Business Networking Group’ which until now has been operated from within the Business Centre. However, due to overwhelming support and interest from local businesses they are moving this month’s meeting on the 5th July to the Cricket Club on Melbourne Road, Ibstock. The move is purely down to the growth of the group and is a clear indication of it’s success.
Sence would like to extend their thanks to the Business Centre and the Old School Tea rooms for their support at previous meetings.
The two partners, Brian and Anna and their Business Development Manager, Sarah, have always been involved in networking and their ethos is passing referrals to other businesses and connecting them with people already in their network. Sence intend to make it their goal to increase the group to 30 members (currently 18) by the end of the year.
As well as this, Sence are actively involved in the community, participating in fundraising events for their chosen charities ‘Clic Sargent’ and ‘Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group’. They recently took part in a charity walk up Scafell Pike in the Lake District to raise money for local lad Ryan Swain who currently is fighting cancer. They are delighted to have raised over £4000 so far and will also be organising a charity quiz night for business teams in September for these chosen charities.
As accountants, Sence offer various services from accounts preparation, self assessment tax returns, book-keeping, payroll,

Leicestershire County Council’s Heritage and Arts Team have been very busy refurbishing the formerly named Donington le Heath Manor House as a family home from the early 17th century.
The new interpretation focuses on the 1620s, when the house was partially remodelled, with new windows, fireplaces, and roof structure. At this time, the house was owned and lived in by members of the Catholic Digby family and their servants. The first cousin of the resident family was Sir Everard Digby, who was executed for his part in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
One of the major tasks within the project was the moving of ‘King Dick’s Bed’, in which legend tells us that Richard III slept
during his pre-Bosworth stay at the White Boar Inn - although it is mostly of late Tudor and Jacobean style – between bedchambers. New crewel work curtains and dyed bed linen have been created to add a fitting period feel.
A reinstated, authentically built wattle and daub partition now divides the great chamber from a first floor lobby, which has significantly helped the authentic feel of the house.
One of the really special things about the house, which our visitors are really enjoying, is the ability to touch and sit and have a go with the mixture of original and replica furniture and fittings, which really gives a much better understanding of the past – the comforts and discomforts, the practicalities and customs.
Volunteers have played a huge part in this project. A team of volunteer
interpreters work in the house to engage with and inform visitors about the history of the site. The Friend’s Jacobean Craft Group meet on the first Saturday of each open month, creating soft furnishings for the house and a Garden Volunteer Team works on developing and maintaining the beautiful and superbly labelled gardens. For more information on how to join our house and garden volunteer teams and spend more of your time in these lovely surroundings, contact [email protected].
The barn houses a tea room baking tasty home make cakes and high quality drinks to complete the visitor experience. There is also a small shop in the barn which sells garden related produce and information leaflets about the house and garden.
The site is open to the public from 10.30am – 4.30pm Thursday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays until the end of September. Admission tickets to the site cover repeat visits until the end of the season. The site will also be accessible for learning activities, as well as seasonal special events and workshops outside this core opening season.
The site is famous for its events, including historical re-enactments, outdoor theatre, plant fairs, children’s activities, workshops and talks, and these will continue at the 1620s House and Gardens.
To find out more about how to experience the tranquillity of the place and the great opportunity for hands-on exploration of the past visit www.doningtonleheath.org.uk for more details.
