Doane Football 20112

The Doane football team enters 2011 with a strong group of returning players and high expectations. The Tigers are coming off a 3-7 overall and conference record. A new champion will be crowned in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) with the departure of the University of Sioux Falls. The Tigers return 34 letter winners and 15 starters for Head Coach Matt Franzen as he enters his fi fth season.

ScheduleThe Tigers will open the season with a pair of road games, including the conference opener against Briar Cliff University on September 3. Doane closed last season with a 42-14 win at Briar Cliff as they rolled up 456 yards in total offense. Anthony Dunn threw for three touchdowns while Tiger running backs combined for three on the ground.

Doane will slip a non-conference game with Dakota State into the schedule on September 10. The Tigers and Trojans will meet for the fi rst time in a 4:00 PM start in Madison, S.D.

The home opener for Doane will be against Northwestern College on September 17. The Red Raiders held off the Tigers, 31-23, in Crete last year. Doane closes the month with a trip to rival Nebraska Wesleyan on September 24.

Homecoming will come on October 1 against Midland. Doane returns home following a bye on October 22 with a game against Dakota Wesleyan University. Senior Day will take place on November 5 against Dordt.

Offensive OutlookThe Tigers return eight starters from last year’s squad that ranked fi fth in the GPAC in total offense with 324.3 yards per game. The Tigers’ strength was in their aerial attack were they fi nished third in the conference with 230.8 yards per game.

Returning for the Tigers is a strong group of receivers. Jeremiah Saffold was the top receiver as he earned Second Team All-GPAC honors with 571 yards with six touchdowns. Tyrone Curry added 429 yards and two scores. Jesse Ver Velde added 380 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Devon Niewohner received honorable mention All-GPAC at tight end after 155 receiving yards and a touchdown.

At quarterback, Anthony Dunn, a Second Team All-GPAC selection, threw for 2,060 yards and 13 touchdowns last year.

Alex Dose is the top returning rusher from last year with 93 yards from scrimmage. The Tigers graduated their top three rushers from 2010 who combined for 912 yards.

The offensive line receives a boost by the return of Jake Conley. Conley missed part of last season with an injury. He is joined by Second Team All-GPAC, Kevin Roehrich, as well as starters Nick Kuxhausen and Dillon Carmichael. Joe Vetrovsky transferred in last spring and should be an asset to the line.

Defensive OutlookUp front, the defensive line will return Nathan Wragge and Cason Christensen. The duo led the team in tackles for loss last year. Christensen posted 36 total tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss. He also performed well in the classroom, earning Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. Wragge posted 30 total tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. Ryan Dirkschneider could line up on the outside or stand up as a linebacker. He posted 19 total tackles and earned GPAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors last year. Clayton Kolling returns after missing part of last year with an injury and was playing well until that point.

The linebacker corps could be the strength of the team if everyone stays healthy. Dalton Ryba, the team’s leader in tackles returns after picking up 73 tackles and 2.5 for lost yardage. Joe Knott earned honorable mention All-GPAC honors after picking up 66 tackles a year ago. Jeremy Wallace, a transfer from the University of Nebraska, returns to the fi eld after spending some time as a member of the Husker scout team. He recorded 115 total tackles in his senior year of high school for Omaha Bryan.

The secondary returns several players with starting experience through their time at Doane. Josh Milz posted 45 tackles and an interception last year. Byron Evans picked up a pair of interceptions last year to go with 24 tackles in his fi rst season. Cody Fanning, Brandon Sharp-Haun and Kent McCrimmon also saw plenty of playing time. Keli’i Jackson transfers in from Santa Ana College where he had 35 tackles and four pass break-ups in seven games.

Special Teams OutlookThe Tigers return kickers on both sides. Andrew Nielsen earned honorable mention All-GPAC honors last year as he converted 25-of-27 PATs and 4-of-5 fi eld goal attempts. Shane Heidemann posted 35.0 yards per punt while Brett Eyer was right behind at 34.8 yards per punt. They should compete once again for the top spot on the depth chart.

The return game could once again fall in the hands of several of the receivers who handled duties last year. Tyler Davis led the Tigers with 289 yards on kickoff returns and 35 yards on punt returns. Tyrone Curry collected 162 yards on kickoff returns while running back Alex Dose posted 281 yards.

Welcome From the GPAC Commissioner...Welcome to the GPAC website! The membership of the Great Plains Athletic Conference welcomes you to our on-line home. We hope that you fi nd all the infomation you need about the GPAC on this site, but if you have additional quesitons please contact me at [email protected]. The GPAC is extremely proud of our athletic accomplishments, but we are also pleased to announce that in 2010-2011 our league totaled 528 NAIA Scholar-Athletes! Our student athletes work very hard to balance academics with athletics and this is a testament to the administrators, faculty, and coaches in the league. 2011-12 marks our 12th year as the Great Plains Athletic Conference, with the league founded originally as the Nebraska-Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC) in 1969. Thank you again for taking the time to visit our website and supporting the more than 4,000 student-athletes in the GPAC! The History of the Great Plains Athletic Conference...The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affi liated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 11 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC), the league retains fi ve of the six charter members - Concordia, Doane, Hastings, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in 2000-2001.Briar Cliff entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside became the 13th member starting with the 2003-2004 school year. Both schools are in Sioux City, Iowa.In the summer of 2010 Dana College ceased operations and in 2011 The University of Sioux Falls left the GPAC to join NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The GPAC sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports - nine for women and ten for men - and awards an All-Sports Trophy based on the fi nal league standings and conference meet results at the end of each school year. Wrestling has added as a sanctioned GPAC sport for 2006-2007. The GPAC is the only NAIA conference in the country to sponsor wrestling.Beginning with the 2005-2006 school year, the GPAC started awarding the Christopherson All-Academic Award. The award is a traveling trophy to be presented annually to the GPAC institution with the best academic performance by its student-athletes in all sports. The award is named in honor of Dr. Myrvin Christopherson, who recently retired as President of Dana College. Christopherson had served as the fi rst chair of the GPAC Council of Presidents. The GPAC has 19 NAIA National Champions...In 2000-2001 the Northwestern women and men won NAIA Division II National Basketball Championships, while the Doane women shared the outdoor NAIA Track and Field title. 2001-2002 brought two NAIA titles to our league. The Hastings women won the NAIA Division II National Basketball title, while Doane’s women won the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship outright. In 2002-2003 the GPAC won two more National Championships with the Hastings women repeating as NAIA Division II National Basketball Champions (defeating GPAC foe Dakota Wesleyan in the title game), and the Northwestern men winning the NAIA Division II crown for the second time in three years. The Morningside women’s basketball teams won the 2004 and 2005 titles in front of the hometown Sioux City fans at the Tyson Events Center. In 2006 the Hastings women’s basketball team won their third basketball title in fi ve years. The GPAC won six straight NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships from 2001 to 2006. Also, in 2006 Dana College claimed the NAIA National Wrestling Championship, while the Nebraska Wesleyan’s men’s golf team won the NCAA III National Title. In the fall of 2006 when Sioux Falls won the Football National Championship in Savannah, Tennessee. The Northwestern women’s basketball team capped a 35-2 season in winning the 2008 NAIA Division II National Championship. The University of Sioux Falls won their second NAIA Football Title in three years by claiming the 2008 National Championship in Rome, Georgia, on December 20. In March of 2009 the Morningside Women’s Basketball team capped a perfect 38-0 season by claiming the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship (defeating GPAC foe Hastings in the title game). On December 19, 2009, the Sioux Falls Football Team Claimed Back-to-Back National Titles and won their fourth overall National Title while capping a 15-0 season in Rome, Georgia. In March of 2010 Northwestern’s women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II National Championship. In the fall of 2010 the Hastings Men’s Soccer Team capped a perfect 25-0 season by claiming the NAIA National Title. The Hastings Women’s Soccer team were NAIA National Runner-Ups in the fall of 2010. Northwestern repeated as NAIA women’s basketball champions in 2010-11 marking the eleventh champion from the GPAC in NAIA Division II basketball in the last 12 years.

Register online at PlayNAIA.org. Create an account with a valid email address.• Pay the one-time registration fee ($60 domestic students / US$85 international students) or indicate qualifi cation for a • fee waiver.

Within the online registration you will create a profi le including:

About Me - Includes basic contact information, previous residences during high school and any military service historyMy Academic Info - Records the student’s high school experience (including home school and GED) and colleges attended for transfers or current NAIA students. My Sports Experience - Collects information on athletic experiences outside of the high school setting. My NAIA Connections is an optional feature that allows a student to create an additional Sport Resume that can be shared with NAIA institutions. Once the online registration is complete, the prospective student submits the profi le to the NAIA Eligibility Center for evaluation.

Test scores When a prospective student-athlete takes the ACT or SAT, he/she must specify the code “9876” when registering for the exam in order to have the test scores sent directly to the NAIA Eligibility Center. Please register with the NAIA Eligibility Center before having your test scores sent.

TranscriptUpon graduation from high school, transferring from a two- or four-year college, or completing one or more semesters at an NAIA school, prospective student-athlete must ask their high school guidance counselors or college registrars to send offi cial transcripts to the NAIA Eligibility Center. Offi cial transcripts must be:

Stamped with the offi cial school seal and/or signature, and• Sent in an offi cial school envelope that is marked by a school offi cial over the seal, showing that a school offi cial was the • last person to handle the document.

If you are sending transcripts from several schools, you can place the already sealed offi cial transcripts into one, larger envelope and mail them together.

Transcripts received directly from students/parents without the school-sealed envelope are not offi cial and will not be accepted.

Please register with the NAIA Eligibility Center and complete your academic information before having transcripts sent. This will allow you to generate your personal transcript cover page you can give to your school to be mailed with your documents.

NOTE: Students who fi nish their junior year with an overall 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale, and have at least an 18 ACT or 860 SAT test score, can receive an early eligibility decision. Those students should request their high school send an offi cial transcript at the end of their junior year.

The Doane College mission is to provide an exceptional liberal arts education in a creative, inclusive, and collaborative community where faculty and staff work closely with undergraduate and graduate students preparing them for lives rooted in intellectual inquiry, ethical values, and a commitment to engage as leaders and responsible citizens in the world. When Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, began building the railroad across Nebraska in the late 1800s, his goal was not only to enhance civilized life for the pioneers, but also to build a liberal arts college on the Nebraska frontier. He and the Congregationalists soon chose the town of Crete, overlooking the Big Blue River, for a college on the plains. The college maintains historical ties with the United Church of Christ. Thomas Doane’s vision of a college in the tradition of Harvard and Yale has become a reality. Fully established in 1872, Doane is Nebraska’s fi rst private liberal arts and sciences college. From the college’s formative years under the tutelage of fi rst president David Brainerd Perry to the current 12th president, Dr. Jacque Carter, the college continues its purpose to educate students to serve and lead in the state, the nation and the world. Today, the college serves more than 3,200 students in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Crete, Lincoln, and Grand Island, Neb., and focuses on providing an exceptional educational experience for all students. The Crete campus serves approximately 1,000 residential students on 300 scenic acres. Designated a state arboretum, the once treeless landscape now boasts more than 100 varieties of trees, numerous plantings, ponds, and swans. Doane College offers bright, ambitious, and service-minded students a world-class liberal arts and sciences education grounded in the uncompromising pursuit of leadership through academic excellence, innovation, community, and the creation of a special sense of place for each individual. Leadership development underscores the students’ experience in all aspects of the college. Doane’s unique Hansen Leadership Program works with students to help enhance their leadership skills and talents, through speakers and events, alumni mentors, course offerings, community service, and other activities. Additional highlights include the four-year graduation guarantee for students…graduate within four years or the college will pay for a fi fth year of course work. A travel scholarship for students provides opportunities to travel on college-sponsored trips in the U.S. or abroad. Doane College was the fi rst institution in the nation to initiate a warranty for its education graduates to hiring school districts, and guarantees teacher education graduates a position. Doane College also offers three graduate degree programs, including the Master of Arts in Management (MAM), Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC), and Master of Education (MED) in Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership.

DOANE ACADEMICS

Page 58: Doane Football Media Guide 2011

Doane Football 201156

DOANE ACADEMIC SUPPORTThe transition from high school to college level academics is a dramatic one, but it need not be traumatic if students make use of the resources Doane College provides through the Academic Support Center (ASC).

In contrast to many students’ high school course experiences, most college level courses demand a whole new study and exam preparation strategy. Most college professors fully expect that students will complete the assigned textbook readings and come to class prepared to ask questions and engage in discussion generated by the reading assignment. Professors’ lectures complement and supplement the required reading assignment, but they are not intended to substitute for required readings.

Likewise, students must attend lectures and labs if they are to gain the full benefi t of their educational opportunity. Completing the assigned readings, attending lectures and labs, being able to record accurate reading/lecture notes and reviewing their notes regularly in preparation for exams and fi nals are all critical to any student’s academic success.

Doane’s Academic Support Center (ASC) provides academic assistance, training and intervention to students who wish to improve their academic performance. The ASC consists of two separate programs: The Doane Learning Center (DLC) and Doane Student Support Services (DSS). Both programs are housed in the Student Services area on the lower level of Perry Campus Center.

The Doane Learning Center is a walk-in center for students wanting to raise their grades or improve their study skills. The program provides academic counseling, peer tutoring, and writing assistance.

Doane Student Support Services (DSS) is a TRIO program, federally funded through the United States Department of Education. It assists eligible students in reaching their academic and personal goals through a variety of activities. Notifi cation of eligibility is sent to new students in the fi rst few weeks of the fall and spring terms and is dependent on American citizenship AND family income level, (or) student disability status or both custodial parents/guardians having less than a four-year degree.

Simon Field was constructed in 1929 following a generous gift from G. Eli Simon, a Cambridge, Nebraska, attorney and father of a graduating senior. Simon Field is located on the north side of the campus and is home to the football and soccer teams. Lauritsen Track surrounds the fi eld and is home to the track & fi eld teams.

Field turf was installed in 2000. As part of the renovation, a new outdoor, polyurethane track was also installed. Both the fi eld and track are used by the Crete community and Crete High School. The press box was wired with Internet capabilities in the summer of 2004.

In the summer of 2011, Simon Field underwent a renovation with the installation of new fi eld turf. The new surface will feature sown in lines for the football and soccer boundaries. The fi rst surface in 2000 had painted lines that faded each year.

The Den is an alternate practice facility for Doane football and is the original home for Doane Soccer. The Den is a grass surface located on the southeast end of campus.

Fuhrer Field House is located east of Simon Field and locker rooms used for home games are located in this building as well as the LeRoy W. & Bertha L. Hood Athletic Training Facility. The fi eld house can also be utilized for indoor practices if weather prevents action at Simon Field or The Den.

The George & Sally Haddix Center opened in Fall 2010 and features a state-of-the-art weight room and fi tness center that is utilized by Tiger athletes. The coaches’ offi ce are also located in the Haddix Center as well as meeting rooms.
