Strategic Direction Assessing Cloud from both an IT and a Network
perspective through collaboration between ATIS TOPS Council (CTOs) and CIO Council (Operator CIOs).• Goal: to enable the delivery of distributed services and/or
applications by means of accessing a shared pool of configurable resources (network, computing, storage) managed as integrated resources.
Addressing Service Providers’ (SPs) needs for cloud:• Focus on how SPs can use what they build – deployment of cloud
services (Software as a Service, Platform as a Service, and Infrastructure as a Service) can be sold to customers as a product and also used internally to streamline operations.
• Integrating business needs (i.e., deploying new services such as telepresence and other media-rich applications) with technological innovations (i.e., leveraging the scaled economies of cloud).
4Build linkages between business goals and the related specific standards.
Strategic Direction (2) ATIS is taking a cross-functional (IT and network) approach
to Cloud. Key service capabilities associated with the cloud (e.g.,
streaming video, data, security, etc.) are under development within several (individual) committees or forums.
Addressing these topics requires a two pronged approach• Individual committees specific service enablers (IdM, IPTV,
Management, etc.) work is shared across ATIS through joint committee sessions.
• Cross functional methods such as XML Harmonization are worked collaboratively in multi-committee ad hoc teams.
5
Challenges
Varying views on the business models. Horizontal integration is hard!
• More time with liaisons• More time in joint meetings
Important work occurs in many places!• Speak your core competency• Contribute to the expertise of others
Cloud moves at internet speed!• Many activities are proceeding in parallel• The aggregate activity can be overwhelming
6
Next Steps/Actions
Continue assessment of SPs needs and develop industry recommendations.
Collaborate with relevant SDOs and forums (e.g., GSC PSOs) to integrate and aggregate knowledge.
Complete first landscape view of network/IT cloud by October 2010 and develop next steps.
Improve standards adoption by (application) development community through companion XML specs where applicable.

Cloud Computing (ATIS) Summary
Presentations• Significant interest in cloud computing including 5 presentations from ETSI
(61), ISAAC (62), ITU (63), TTA (64r1), and ATIS (82r2). Summary
• There is a consistent high level understanding of cloud definition. The layers of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS are widely recognized
• There are many existing proprietary implementations. Implementable solutions of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS are inconsistent and
proprietary. Many service components already exist but gaps are not clear because of
multiple taxonomies• Standardizing taxonomy and identifying
Cloud layers are more valuable if they are interoperable and consistent: standardized building blocks.
Develop consistent requirements for cloud Focused effort on normalizing taxonomy
Resolution• Proposed new Resolution from ISAAC (GSC15-PLEN-76)
