ABSTRACTThis Kids Count data book presents a statistical
portrait of the well being of and current conditions faced by thechildren of Kansas, based on key indicators. Eighteen indicators aredetailed in six subject areas: (1) economic well-being; (2) physicalhealth and safety; (3) educational achievement; (4) early childhoodcare and education; (5) emotional well-being; and (6) social behaviorand social control. Data are presented in a table format byindividual indicator and by county, and include comparativeinformation concerning current year and past years and percent changeover time. A demographic description of each county and a shortsummary highlighting individual county findings are provided. Thefindings indicate both improved and worsened conditions. Areas ofimprovement included: (1) Head Start participation of children 3-4living below the poverty level; (2) births to mothers with less thana high school education; (3) births that received prenatal care; (4)high school graduates pursuing post-secondary education/training; and(5) childhood deaths. Indicators with worsened findings include: (1)
births to single teens; (2) out-of-home placements; (3) teen violent
deaths; (4) juvenile arrests; (5) low birth weight babies; (6) infantmortality; and (7) high school graduation. The report's appendicesexplain selection of indicators and include data notes and sources.(SD)
