Introduction Documents by Readdle is an advanced document reader for your iPad and iPad mini. Besides displaying documents, it can store files copied via USB or Wi-Fi, connect to various network storages and save pages from the web.

With Documents app you can do the following:

Chapter 1: Overview Documents by Readdle provides clean and simple user interface. It has two main sections: controls to the left and files to the right. You can chose either Thumbnails or List view of your files by swiping down from the top and tapping the appropriate option on Sorting toolbar.

• “Documents” tab shows the list of all files and folders stored within Documents by Readdle

• “iCloud” folder allows syncing documents between different devices with Documents by Readdle and ReaddleDocs, provided these devices are connected to the same iCloud account.

• “Network” tab allows connecting to different kind of web servers, downloading and uploading files.

• “Browser” gives a possibility to browse the web without leaving Documents by Readdle. • “Network” section gives fast access to the web services you’ve connected to. • “Recents” tab displays the list of all recently opened files.

Chapter 2: Copying documents

Copying files from online storage

If you use Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, FTP/SFTP or other WebDAV server, Documents provides handy access to your files directly from the iPad. You can use any of the online storages to transfer files from your PC or laptop to the iPad.

NOTE: Downloaded file can be opened later even without an active Internet connection

1 Go to “Network”>“+ Add Storage…” and select the server you’d like to connect to. Provide your login and password.

2 You can access files under “Network” tab. By tapping on any of the files will save it locally to the Downloads folder in “Documents” tab.

NOTE: If the online storage you use is not in the list, tap ”Other WebDAV Server” and enter the URL and credentials manually.

The file copied from the network storage is saved to the same folder as on the server. This feature can be modified under “Settings”>”File manager”.

2-way synchronization

Once a connection to the web storage is established, you can set up automatic 2-way synchronization with one of the folders on the server.

ATTENTION: Sync uses your Wi-Fi or 3G internet connections. Large folder syncing (like your entire Dropbox account) may be very slow, that's why, please choose one or several folders, which contain only required files.

To enable 2-way sync:

1 Go to “Network” tab,

2 Select the server you would like to sync with,

3 Open a folder,

4 Tap “Sync” button on the navigation bar,

5 Tap “Sync This Folder” to add this folder to syncing queue.

6 After that a copy of the folder will be added to the Documents tab. All changes applied to documents within this folder will be automatically synced with the storage.

USB file transfer using iTunes File Sharing

Documents app supports iTunes USB File Sharing for transferring files over USB. To transfer files, connect your iPad to a computer via USB, then open iTunes and click on the device name at the top. Afterwards, click on the “Apps” tab and scroll down. Find Documents in “File Sharing” section.

You can Drag & Drop files into our app’s documents list.

Saving attachments from Mail and other iPad apps

Attachments from Mail application can be saved to Documents using “Open In...” function. For this:

1 Open an email in the Mail application.

2 Tap and hold on the attachment.

3 Tap “Open in Documents”.

You can use “Open In...” function to save documents from other applications like Dropbox, Box, Pages, Safari, iWork apps etc. to Documents. Just tap “Actions” button in the appropriate application and select “Open In...”.

Connecting Documents to a computer via Wi-Fi

Documents can use Wi-Fi network connection of any type to copy files between an iPad and a computer.

The application uses the WebDAV protocol to share its data with other computers via Wi-Fi Network. Most popular operating systems and many programs have the ability to mount a WebDAV resource as a network drive.

To check Documents app Wi-Fi Drive IP address, go to “Network” and tap the Wi-Fi icon at the top right corner.

For quick uploading/downloading files, you may also connect to Documents app using any web browser. Just type full URL like ht tp://192.168.1.4 into address bar (replace 192.168.1.15 with IP address of your iPad).

Connecting Documents to Windows XP

1 Open the “Start” menu and select “My Network Places”.

2 At the “Network Tasks” panel (you can find it on the left part of the window) click “Add a Network Place” .“Add Network Place Wizard” will be launched.

3 Click “Next” at the “Add Network Place Wizard” welcome screen.

4 Select “Choose another network location” and then click “Next”.

5 Type “http://” and Documents app IP address and port. This information is displayed on top of the “Network” tab on your iPad.

6 Enter the name for this new connection or leave a default one.

7 Press “Finish”. Please ensure that “Open this network place when I click Finish” is checked.

8 If you have enabled password protection inside Documents, you will be prompted to enter your username and password. Make sure you are entering a username and password, which are set in Documents “Settings” tab. Also, please note that Windows XP may ask you to enter the password several times.

9 As a result you should get Documents network drive mounted and ready to use:

To reconnect to Documents, first make sure that the app is running. Open the “Start” menu and click “My Network Places”. Find the network drive under Network Locations and double-click it.

Connecting Documents to Windows Vista/ Windows 7

1 Open “Start” menu and select “Computer”

2 Click “Map network drive” on the toolbar on top of the “Computer” window.

3 Choose a drive letter in the drop-down menu.

4 Type “http://” and Documents app IP address. This information is displayed on top of the “Network” tab in Documents app. Make sure the “Reconnect at login” box is unchecked.

5 If you have enabled password protection in Documents, you will be prompted to enter your username and password. Make sure you are entering the username and password, which are set in Documents app “Settings” tab. Also, please note that Windows Vista/Windows 7 may ask you to enter the password several times.

6 As a result you should get Documents app network drive mounted and ready to use:

To reconnect to Documents, first make sure that the app is running. Open the “Start” menu and click “Computer”. Find the network drive under Network Locations and double-click it.

Connecting Documents to Mac OS X 10.4 or later

1 Click on the Finder icon

2 Select the “Connect to Server...” item in the “Go” menu. You can use Command+K shortcut as well.

3 Type “http://” and Documents server's IP address.

4 Press “Connect” button. You can also add the server to “Favorite Servers” list.

If you have enabled password protection at Documents, you will be prompted to enter your username and password. Make sure that you are entering username and password, which are set in Documents “Settings” tab.

5 As a result you should get Shared Disk mounted on your Mac:

You can also enable “Connected servers” setting at Finder “Preferences”→ “General” to show it on the Desktop.

iCloud

Documents app provides a possibility to sync data via iCloud.

With this feature you can share one set of files with all devices with Documents connected to one iCloud account.

To use the feature to make sure iCloud is enabled on your device. For this:

1 Launch iPad Settings

2 Tap iCloud

3 Make sure Documents&Data is On.

4 Once this is done iCloud tab will be available in Documents.

5 All the documents you copy or move to iCloud folder are accessible on other devices with our app connected to the same iCloud account.

ATTENTION: iCloud uses your Wi-Fi or 3G internet connection. Sending large amount of data will take time and drain iPad’s battery life.

Chapter 3: Managing files Documents app provides a wide variety of options for storing and organizing your files.

Managing files and folders

To reveal options for managing files and folders tap in a “Documents” or “iCloud” tabs.

To manage files stored in Documents, select these files and do the following:

Copy file Tap “Copy” and choose destination folder

Move file Tap “Move” and choose destination folder

Rename Select one file and tap “Rename”

Compress file/folder Tap “Zip”. The new archive file will be placed into the same folder.

Delete document Tap “Delete”

Email one or several files Tap “Email”. The dialog will pop up to edit the message and fill in recipient email

Upload Tap “Upload” to send a file or files to a web server you’ve connected to

Open in another app Tap “Open In…” and select the app to send the file

Sort Swipe down get to sort bar and select “Name”, “Date” or “Size”

Create new folder Tap “Create Folder” and name new folder

NOTE: When you delete a folder, all its files and subfolders are deleted as well.

Search

Documents provides a possibility to search through all your documents. You can choose to search within the documents’ contents or only the names of your files.

To activate Search bar tap and type in the text in the search field.

To navigate to a folder with the search result tap .

NOTE: Contents search is a resource consuming process which requires file indexing and may take some time. Please wait until indexing and search are finished to view all the results.

Tap “Done” to go back to “Documents” tab.

Chapter 4: Reading documents

Viewing and annotating PDF files PDF files

Documents provide a possibility to view and annotate PDF files.

To add Do this

Note Tap and hold on any place of the document without text and tap

Note to a text Tap and hold on the text to show text selection box. Drag markers to select the text and select “Note” from the popup.

Type a note to the selected extract of the text.

To edit a text note, tap on the “Note” sign (above left) once and modify its content. To edit the color of the selected text, tap “Colors”. To delete it tap “Clear”.

Highlight Tap and hold on the text to show text selection box. Drag markers to select the text and select “Highlight” from the popup.

To edit the color of the selected text, tap “Colors”. To delete highlighting tap “Clear”. To copy the selected word / phrase, tap “Copy”. Afterwards it will be possible to paste it a note by tapping and holding your finger and selecting “Paste” in a note popup. You can always add a note to the given text by tapping “Note”.

Afterwards it will be possible to paste it using such pop ups as “Note” or “Text” by tapping and holding your finger and selecting “Paste”. You can always add a note to the given text by selecting “Note”.

Strikeout Tap and hold on the text to show text selection box. Drag markers to select the text and select “Strikeout” from the popup.

To edit the color of the selected text, tap “Colors”. To delete strikeout tap “Clear”. To copy the selected word / phrase, tap “Copy”. Afterwards it will be possible to paste it using such pop ups as “Note” or “Text” by tapping and holding your finger and selecting “Paste”. You can always add a note to the given text by selecting “Note”.

Search To search for a text within a PDF tap

on and type is the word.

By tapping on any of the search results you can go to the appropriate page.

You can start searching the web for the key word or go to Wikipedia from the popup.

The web page will be opened in internal browser.

To add Do this

Bookmarks Tap and then select “Bookmarks”. To add new bookmark tap “Add”.

To review the PDF structure, tap “Outlines”. To navigate to another chapter of the PDF just tap the appropriate item.

Tap “Annotations” to review the list of highlights and notes. To navigate to a certain annotation tap it in the list.

Dictionary You can search for a definition of any word in PDF file by tapping and holding on it and selecting “Dictionary” on the popup.

PDF Viewer options

To gain access to additional options while

viewing PDF file tap

Go to Page Navigates to a certain page of the PDF

Enable Crop Mode

Crop mode fixes current zoom level. When the mode is on, you can swipe to another page with one finger even when the document is zoomed in. To pan or zoom in this mode 2 fingers gestures should be used

Send by E-mail

This option allows sending the current document by email. NOTE: simple PDF viewers cannot display annotations made by Documents app. You can create Flattened copy of the document and then send it by email to make sure that your recipient will be able to read the annotations

Save a Copy Allows creating a copy of the PDF. You can choose a target folder for the new file.

Print Send a document to print via iOS AirPrint feature

Open in… Sends the document to any other application that supports PDF files on your iPad

Brightness You can switch to night mode to read documents in a dark

Reading other types of documents

In the Documents app you can view MS Office and work files and perform the following actions:

• Search for key words • Add bookmarks and use

them for navigating • Send the file by email • Send the file to another

application on the iPad • Print the document • Set up the brightness for

viewing the document

Playing Audio and Video

Documents plays video and audio files stored locally.

If there are several audio files in a folder Documents will create a playlist of them and switch to the next song in the folder automatically.

The music will play in the background if you close the app.

Reading books

With Documents app you can read ePub and FB2 electronic books in a most comfortable way. To set up the font size

and family tap and select “Book Reader”.

Browsing the web

With the internal browser in Documents you can:

• Browse the web, • Save bookmarks, • Save web pages as HTML, Web archive and PDF files for offline

reading, • Download files to the Documents tab.

To switch to browser tap “Browser” on the left-side panel.

Appendix: Settings Settings allow customizing your application, configuring Wi-Fi network drive parameters, document viewing, security and other preferences of the app.

General

Passkey allows you to protect documents from being viewed by another person. Once set, the application will ask the passkey on each launch.

NOTE: To set password for wireless access to Documents by Readdle, use Wi-Fi Network Drive section.

ATTENTION! There is no way to recover your files if you forget the passkey.

Indexing allows searching with the text of your documents.

NOTE: Indexing takes more RAM and CPU resources from your iPad, so enabling this feature may decrease performance.

Office Documents Search allows searching within iWork and MS Office and HTML files.

Wi-Fi Drive

Wi-Fi Drive turns Documents by Readdle into a portable flash drive. The only difference is that you need active Wi-Fi connection to transfer files from your computer to the iPad.

This feature is based on WebDAV protocol and is compatible with both Windows and Mac.

Sync

This option contains settings for Automatic Sync. Also you can enable New WebDAV Engine sync. In this mode Documents by Readdle gets the list of modified files from the server instead of checking all files, which speeds up synchronization.

Browser

This option allows:

• Set target folder for downloads • Choose user agent, you can select Safari,

Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.

• Clear History removes data about the web pages you’ve visited

• Clearing Cookies and Data removes all personal data from the browser in Documents.

Viewers

• Phone number links feature highlights phone numbers in documents when enabled

• Save media position options allow saving the last page position when you are reading the document or starts playing video or audio from the place where playback stopped

• Open source code in editor – automatically starts editing the text of your source code files

• VGA Output options allow setting up mirroring. In “Screen mirror” mode the exact copy of the iPad screen will be displayed on an external monitor or projector. When “Document only” is enabled our app will show the file while all

menus and popups will be visible on iPad only.

PDF

This option allows you to:

• “View PDF in” allows selecting default viewer for PDFs

• Enable or disable “Highlight form fields” to visually separate active fields from PDF background

• Set the way you prefer to scroll pages, horizontally or vertically.

• Make Documents by Readdle zoom-in automatically to the page width in landscape mode by checking “Page Width” in “Lowest page zoom fits to” section. Otherwise it will show the whole page in landscape mode.

• Setup page number indication.

Book Reader

Book Reader options allow setting the font size and family for reading FB2 and ePub books

File manager

In this section you can set up the default directory for the files you download from web servers.

Also you can enable or disable immediate opening files in Documents by Readdle on startup and after downloading them from the web.

Show Photos gives access to Camera Roll within Documents tab

Tapping on the “Support” button in Settings section allows you to contact Readdle Support team in case you have any questions or suggestions. If you have faced with an issue, please enable Verbose logging, then reproduce the problem and contact us via Support dialog. Diagnostic log will be sent to us so that we could assist you faster.
