‘Let it go, let it go………’

I was chatting to a friend recently who expressed astonishment when he heard that I am taking a sabbatical and going away on my own for 6 weeks in March & April. ‘Why 6 weeks?’ he asked. ‘Why in March & April?’ Amongst other reasons I told him, my sabbatical will coincide with the season of Lent. Enlightenment dawned on his face. ‘Ah I see! You’re giving up people for Lent!’ I laughed, and said I hadn’t really thought of it that way, but essentially, I guess he’s right.

I had arrived at a point where the idea of doing this presented itself so forcibly that it could not be ignored. As the time draws near, I have no definite plans for anything to achieve during this period. I intend to walk, to pray, to be open to God as his voice whispers through the trees, the sea, the sun, the rain, the creatures and the people I encounter. As someone who likes a routine, a structure, a sense of purpose and achievement this isn’t going to come too easily. But I definitely feel it’s worth doing.

One of the things I appreciate about the Christian calendar is that the year is marked into seasons which each offer something different and helpful to life. The season of Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday – identified in our house as the day after pancake day – and goes through until Easter, is traditionally the time for giving something up, and often for me that has just been chocolate! It is an opportunity to practice self-discipline. Nowadays there are many different ideas to try in Lent – we might be encouraged to carry out a generous act each day; or donate to the foodbank or other charity. And in the past I have engaged in Lent in those ways and enjoyed feeling that I have achieved something good.

This year it feels right for me to focus on deliberate non-achievement. Part of Lenten observance is the absence of something. As we journey through life we find ourselves having to give up, to let go, of things, of people, of places; but also of behaviours, attitudes, accomplishments with which we have become comfortable. This is always at the very least unpleasant and at the most, almost unbearably painful and from which we instinctively shy away. In my experience, if we practise ‘letting go’ from time to time, we can become better at it. It doesn’t have to be a 6 week sabbatical. We can practice letting go in little ways. And if we are practiced in the little things, our faith develops and then the big things might not seem quite so terrifying.

With love & lightLis Bayford

COMMUNITY WARDEN Jack Gilbey, the Community Warden has been out and about in Doddington to familiarise himself with the village and will continue to be around Doddington once a week, usually in the afternoon on Thursdays or Friday mornings. Jack’s contact details are 0777 339 7135, email [email protected]. DEFIBRILATOR New pads have been purchased for the defibrillator. Consideration was given as to whether paediatric pads should also be available. Proper qualified advice has been taken from SECAmb who has advised that if paediatric pads are not available common practise is to use adult pads. SPEED WATCH Speed Watch sessions are held regularly in the village and the number of speeding vehicles entering the village has increased which is disappointing. Full details are sent to the Police. If you would like to volunteer to join the team, please contact Cllr Fraser. Full training is given. HIGHWAYS The Council has asked Swale Borough Council for a road sweep following Storm Ciara as there had been a lot of rain during the storm and this has left mud on the road and pavements. The lagoon at the bottom of Kings Acre has been inspected and it was found that it fills up quickly as the lagoon needs digging out. Annie Thurgarland, KCC Flood Management has been informed. There is a new scrape at the top of Spratts Hill and this has helped. Consideration is being given to a stepped lagoon at the top of the Old Lenham Road. Brushing the debris off the drains will help in advance of heavy rain if forecast. PLANNING MATTERS i. Ref: 19/506344/FULL Address: The Old Post Office The Street Doddington ME9 0BH. Summary of matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting held on 13th February 2020

Present: Cllrs C Woods, S Elworthy, J Crampton, S Gunner

In attendance: Cllr A Bowles (KCC) Cllr D Simmons, 2 PCO’s and 1 member of the public

Before the meeting opened the two PCO’s from Faversham Town Police informed those present of the last month’s crime rate and advised us that, in future, it would be sent to the PC via email on a regular monthly basis. They stated that 101 should always be used to report a problem, the matter then being passed on the Faversham office to be dealt with.

The meeting then started at 8.20pm when the previous minutes were agreed and accepted.

Open SessionA member of the public asked about care in the community – this will be discussed at further meetings.

Traffic SurveyIt was thought the siting of the equipment at the Doddington end of the village was in the wrong position. Results were not yet known, and David Simmons stated that if results indicated lack of information from the position used, the exercise would need to be repeated.

Youth MattersKC Cllr Bowles advised that funds had been allocated to the KCC Outreach Youth Services that would benefit Boroughs, Parish Councils and Community organisations.

Skate Pipe – After receiving quotations and information from various suppliers, it was agreed that a pipe was not suitable or affordable for the small space available. The football goal was no longer desired and will be removed. Cllr Crampton asked for the Wineycock play area facilities to be discussed at the next meeting.

Other MattersKC Cllr Bowles advised that a meeting regarding the amendments to the Creek Bridge would be held at the Swale Council offices on Wednesday 19th February.

Cllr David Simmons advised the meeting of the new tier of Local Government’s Area Committees. He also gave his apologies for not being able to attend the March meeting.

Date of Next Meeting: Thursday 12th March 2020 8pm in the Village Hall. All residents are welcome.

Nature Notes

It’s only the middle of February as I write this, but it already feels

like spring is on its way. In the woods, the very first early dog-

violets are flowering, and the leaves of bluebells and early

purple-orchids are well developed. Of course, some plants

flower very early in the year anyway – a good example is

butcher’s broom, the low-growing, spiky, evergreen shrub of

ancient woodland which is flowering now. The flowers of

butcher’s broom are tiny, purply-green and star-like, and form on

what look like small, pointed leaves but are in fact flattened

sections of stem. The flowers produce berries which eventually

turn bright red; because the berries take more than a year to

ripen, flowers, unripe berries and fully ripe berries can all be

found on a single plant at the same time.

A few birds are starting to sing, and the fluty whistle of the

mistle thrush can be heard, while great tits are starting to sing

their ‘teacher-teacher’ song. Still, in some ways we hardly seem

to have had a winter – I think it’s notable how few redwings and

fieldfares have been around this year. Presumably this is

because the mild weather means they have felt no need to

migrate to Britain from their breeding ranges in Northern and

Eastern Europe – though a small flock of fieldfares which I

spotted today may perhaps have been brought in on the cold

winds which followed Storm Dennis.

Both redwings and fieldfares are easy to spot in flight as they are

quite vocal, keeping in touch with each other by giving out

contact calls as they fly. The flight call of redwings is a high-

pitched, almost metallic ‘tseep’ (which can often be heard at

night in autumn, as the birds are happy to make migration flights

after dark), while fieldfares have a harsh ‘chack-chack-chack-

chack’ call. It’s worth putting a little effort into learning a few

bird calls, as it makes it a lot easier to spot stuff (and you don’t

need binoculars!). It was the distinctive ‘cronk’ call that recently

alerted me to a raven flying past. Ravens are the largest of the

crows, intelligent, sociable and playful, and are found right

around the world in northern latitudes, though they have only

recently recolonised Kent and are still fairly scarce and localised

here – a good place to look for them is on the cliffs around Dover.

WATCH HIDDEN in WC!

Whitstable Times & Herne Bay Herald newspaper on Saturday March 27th 1875 had an article about Henry Courts in Doddington having his watch stolen.

“Charles Carrier was charged with stealing a silver watch, value £2, the property of Henry Court, at Doddington, on the 13th inst. - Prosecutor deposed that he was a thatcher and lived alone. On Saturday morning last he went out, locked the door, and placed the key under the eaves, where he was in the habit of putting it. When he returned home at night the key was not there, and ongoing on to the door he found it was unlocked. He got a light, and at once missed the watch, produced from the mantel piece. Prisoner had been in his employ during the last three months and had had opportunities of observing him putting his key under the eaves. – P.C. Masters received information of the robbery and went in pursuit of the prisoner. He found him in a house at Mile Town, Sheerness. He first observed him in the backyard. He charged him with the robbery, and he denied it. He searched him and found nothing on him. He then went into the backyard, and found the watch produced in a w.c. Prisoner afterwards admitted having taken the watch. – Prisoner now pleaded guilty, and the magistrates sentenced him to three months’ hard labour.”

There had been earlier another stealing of a watch in Doddington as The Kentish Chronicle described, Saturday March 23rd 1861. “Thomas Philip Sodon, a surgeon, was charged with stealing a watch, &c., the property of Charles Lewis, on the 18th July at Doddington. The prisoner had been arranged at a previous assize, but was not then tried, as it was believed that he was not in a sufficient sound state of mind. The case was not proceeded with, and the jury acquitted the prisoner.”

There is information about Henry Court in the censuses and Doddington Parish births and burials. He was born to Edward and Elizabeth Court, in Doddington, 22 April 1808 and his baptism was 13 November 1808 at Doddington church, St John the Baptist. In the censuses he is described as a Thatcher for his profession. 1841 he was living by himself in Doddington Street. 1851 he was in a lodge in the home of James Butler and 1861 a lodge again, this time in the home of Alfred Goodhew. 1871 he was living with James Goodhew in Doddington Lane. 1881 his address was Walnut Cottage where he lived by himself. His burial was in August 25th 1896, when he was 88, the ceremony was performed by Thomas Morton, Rector of Wychling, at St. John the Baptist, Doddington.

19th March

“I’ll give it seven”

We used to out dancingWhen young and in our prime,Every Monday eveningAnd we’d have a lovely time.

We went to the Masonic hallWith lots of other dancers. We learnt the Waltz and Quickstep,We even tried the Congas.

Out teacher was John Shephard,Who came to Kent from Wales. He was a school headmaster,So he kept us on the rails.

We got lost in the Eightsome ReelBut we mastered the Valetta. The Foxtrot always foxed us,The St. Bernard waltz was neater.

We’d stop halfway for coffee,While we’d sit and have a talk,Then go back and try the TangoOr perhaps the Lambeth Walk.

But now we’re getting old and greyAnd our knees have turned to jelly,The nearest we can get to danceIs to watch it on the telly!

Eastling School News Brownie Activities Diary

We are already halfway through the school academic year. Our children have been very busy with their learning but also with exciting visitors, trips and themed learning weeks. This term we had Children’s Mental Health Week which took place in February. On Wednesday 29th January Miss Johnson took children from key stages 1 and 2 to a cross country competition held at Herne Bay High School. It was a very cold and muddy day with the older children having to run 1500m. The children all completed the course and the key stage one team came 2nd overall in the small schools category.

On Friday 7th February Miss Johnstone took a team to the Active Life Festival at Medway Park. The event focused on encouraging children that ordinarily would not choose to take part in sporting activities. The activities included speed stacking and obstacle races and the children had an enjoyable day.

Acorn class continue to enjoy their weekly nature walks around the locality. The children have been noticing features of the church including the steeple and weather vane. Some of the children are particularly interested to learn about the people who are buried there and whether any soldiers have been laid to rest there. The children have also observed early signs of spring including daffodil shoots along the church wall.

Oak class have been learning about mountains and rivers this term and have conducted research about their chosen mountain before constructing their own model mountains. On Friday 7th February Oak class travelled to Canterbury and spent the day with Anna Outdoors to investigate the River Stour. This included observations, river dipping and conducting an experiment.

Willow class have been learning about living things and their habitats. On Tuesday 11th February they travelled to Dungeness to the RSPB nature reserve. The children spent time in the bird hide observing and classifying species of birds found in Kent. They also went pond dipping.

On Wednesday 22nd January the school choir travelled by coach to the O2 to be part of the Young Voices 2020 concerts. The children had a truly memorable experience singing with thousands of children and a number of famous singers including The Shires and Tony Hadley.

The Friends of Eastling School (FOES) organised a Quiz Night, which was a wonderful evening that brought together family and friends from the community. The FOES also ended the term with a Valentine Masked Disco.

In February we had Fun with Fajita’s, making our own guacamole, then washing, chopping or grating cheese, carrot, chicken and red peppers. We wrapped our delicious rolls and took them home for parents to enjoy for lunch the next day.

In Spread the Word, the oldest and youngest Brownies competed to see who were the best communicators, by standing in two lines with their eyes closed, then the first girl whispered in the next one’s ear what an action to do, for example Hop on One Leg. We discussed why it is important to be clear and precise when communicating and learnt how to promote your ideas for charities or issues to other people, through social media, posters, flyers, public meetings and newspapers.

Our newest pack member Isolde was enrolled in a ceremony in which girls were reminded about the Brownie promise about doing a good turn every day.

Finally, In Valentine Surprise, the girls decorated beautiful miniature heart shaped chocolate boxes and made personalised cards for their loved ones. Next term we’ll be exploring further Skills Builder activities.

Currently we have 12 Brownies, which leaves us with six places, so if you would like your daughter to join, please get in touch with Rainbow Owl on 01795 890211 or visit the Girl Guiding website www.girlguiding.org.uk

There are a few spaces available across the school for an immediate start. Any prospective parents looking for a Reception place for September 2020 are welcome to call the office on 01795 890252 to arrange a visit. For further information please visit our school website where photographs and newsletters are displayed and updated regularly.

Newsletter Subscriptions – Thanks to those who have already paid your subs and

we look forward to those still to come. Our apologies to those who were late in receiving copies last month – the printer came to a halt with 100 still to go and we had to wait until the engineer could find the fault and then replace the parts before the printing could continue. Bearing in mind the cost of repairs and increasing paper & ink costs, starting next year the subscription for paper copies will be increased to £2. We think doubling the price after all these years is not too great a hardship and we are very grateful to those who have often thought £1 was not enough!

Thank you - Sue & Bob
