‘When you’re down and troubled……and nothing, nothing is going right’

Some years ago I undertook a personality type course in which the participants were asked to

consider whether we preferred to organise life with structured plans and lists, or whether we

preferred to just take things as they come and deal with them more flexibly. These ways of being

exist on a spectrum, and it was immediately obvious to me that I am someone who is quite a long

way on the side of making plans and lists; even lists about the lists I have to make, and indeed the

creation of lists just so that I can have the satisfaction of ticking things off which I’ve already done!

Some of you will probably be nodding in recognition of this, and some of you may be laughing at

how ridiculous this behaviour is!

However as we all know, life has a funny way of not falling into line with our plans, and a few weeks

ago the day I had planned was not turning out at all satisfactorily. Already during the morning a

couple of things had not gone smoothly and in the afternoon I had an appointment at one end of

Canterbury and an item to collect from a shop at the other end. So after my appointment, I walked

briskly through the city to the shop. As I walked I couldn’t fail to notice a number of homeless

people sitting on the pavements. I looked at the face of one young man and all I could see there

was utter desolation. I continued to the shop.

However on my arrival there I was flabbergasted to find it closed with no apparent explanation. I

peered through the window; rang the bell; phoned; all to no avail. Yet another thing had gone

wrong with my day and I felt cross. So as I stood outside the shop and considered walking back

through the city to the car park, I told God how cross I was that my plans were upset. And then I

set off, and as I walked I remembered the homeless man and thought, well perhaps I could buy

him a cuppa, so into Costa I went and found myself buying two. I walked back through the city but

when I reached the spot where I had seen the young man, he was nowhere in sight! My crossness

returned – here I was trying to do something to redeem the day and I had been thwarted!

I steamed on with both cups and passed no-one to give them to. I had nearly reached the car park

and was just about to give up when I came across John. He was sitting in a tiny patch of sunlight

by the Westgate towers; an older man with a scruffy dog. Thank goodness - someone to offer the

cuppa to! He accepted it gratefully and I was so relieved. I sat down beside him to drink the other

cup, and we exchanged a bit of our life stories. He blessed my day, probably far more than I

blessed his; and I went on my way with lighter spirit. My encounter with John taught me that when

my own plans are not turning out as I thought, there may be unexpected blessings if I can allow

myself to abandon my own agenda and see the opportunities that God is putting my way.

‘Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for

God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go. He’s the one who will keep you on track’

Proverbs 3:5,6

Report of the Parish Council meeting held on 8 April 2019 COMMUNITY WARDEN REPORT There has been a further report of fly tipping in Sawpit Road which has been reported to Swale Borough Council for clearance. A small holding at the top of Hopes Hill was targeted but fortunately nothing was taken. Please check any sheds and out buildings and make sure they are secure. If possible, security mark your power tools, gardening equipment. WAR MEMORIAL Work on the War Memorial is expected to start in June. The Swale WW1 Centenary Grant Fund has closed and an application will be made to the Heritage Grant Fund in May. PLANNING Ref: 18/504562/FULL Address: Ellens Court Lady Margaret Manor Road Doddington The updated Transport Statement is now online and the matter is expected to go to Swale Planning Committee in due course. The Parish Council will continue to object to the proposal on the grounds that it is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; the scale and building mass; and that it is not in a sustainable location. SPEED WATCH Speed Watch sessions continue to be held in the village and reports are sent to Kent Police. Further volunteers are still needed to help with the sessions and full training will be given. If you would like to be involved in this important work please contact Cllr Fraser for details. PLAYING FIELD Councillors have agreed to allow dogs on the playing field during this year’s Funday only. FLOODING ISSUES Annie Thurgarland, KCC Natural Flood Management, has made a site visit. Holes have been dug to find the depth of the chalk strata but at 2.5m depth it could not be found. Ms Thurgarland has suggested a series of 10m swales dug along the hedge with a 1m depth and a continuous bund behind the swales adjacent to the hedge subject to the landowner’s agreement. Ms Thurgarland is in favour of gapping up the hedges but KCC has very limited money and may only be able to afford a digger and driver. This is in the Kent Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so they would also need to be consulted. Attenuation or drainage ponds will not work as the chalk strata is too far down. The Parish Council and local land owners are working with KCC to find the best solution for the village. PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS The election was uncontested and Kevin Attwood, Steve Coates, Graham Cuthbert, Peter Duckworth, Kevin Fraser and Colin Jones are duly elected to the Parish Council. Councillors thanked Phil Haynes for his sterling work and contribution to the Parish Council

Date of Annual Parish Meeting and Annual Parish Council Meeting: Monday 13 May 2019 at 7.30pm in Doddington Village Hall.

All are welcome to attend. There is a public time for residents to raise issues with the Council.

This is a brief summary of the meeting held on 8 April 2019, the full minutes will be available on the Parish Council website when ratified.

The Apiary in May

As I write this article the weather has at last warmed up, the sun is shining and the bees are busy working the cherry and pear blossom for pollen and nectar. A long spell of this weather would be perfect.

All of my six colonies have survived the winter and by May will have been building up in numbers as the queens increase their egg laying. May is a time of foraging in plenty for nectar and pollen. Nectar for an energy food source and for producing beeswax, made through glands in their bodies, to build fresh comb. Pollen is for feeding larvae in the brood nest.

May is the time of year when the beekeeper has to be prepared. Stored hives and parts that have been removed for cleaning over winter need to be ready for use, as the bees won’t wait for the beekeeper. May is one of the busiest and most interesting times of the bee-keeping year - seeing the colonies building up and working with them to ensure strong and healthy bees that will produce a honey crop later on.

Healthy bees and young vigorous laying queens are the key to success and, at this time of year, I always replace some brood comb that is three years old with freshly drawn out comb - older comb can store bacteria spores that could cause health problems. My way of replacing old comb with new is achieved by placing removable wooden frames, 11 in all, that are each fully fitted with centrally placed thin sheets of beeswax (called foundation) into an empty hive brood box. This box is placed on top of the current one with complete open access from the bottom box to enable the bees to come up into the top one. The bees will begin drawing out new comb on both sides of the beeswax foundation and, when the cells are deep enough, the queen will begin laying eggs in them. After a few days I will confine the queen to the top box. The brood in the bottom box will gradually emerge and be clear of bees in 21 to 24 days. I can then remove the bottom box with the old comb that I will render down, clean and use for making candles. The bees will be in the new box with fresh clean and healthy comb.

Oilseed rape flower is a good source of nectar from which lovely fresh comb can be built and, as plenty of it is grown around here, I always take advantage of that at this time of year.

The colonies will continue to build up in numbers over this month and swarming could happen now and well into June as I carry out weekly inspections and take preventive measures if necessary.

Autograph Albums

In my youth collecting the signatures of famous people was very popular among children and adults alike. Often it was family, or school friends (especially on the last day of the last term at school) who would write in your album.

Can you remember any amusing entries you may have had in your album, e.g.

A little bit of powder,

A little bit of paint

Makes a pretty lady

Just what she really aint.

That was my father’s contribution!

If you have any you remember, please share them in this village newsletter.

For Life’s Journey

17

May Time

It is the merry month of May,The days are getting longer,The baby lambs are in the fieldsAnd the sun is getting stronger

The blossom’s on the orchard boughsAnd new leaves on the treesAnd lots of rotten catkinsThat spread pollen on the breeze.

I’m allergic to the pollenAs everywhere it flies.I’ve a vick stick in my pocketAnd eye drops in my eyes.

If I get a fit of sneezingI have to stop the car,So until the catkins go awayI won’t be going far.

So I wish the spring would go awayAnd June would soon begin.Until then I’ll just hide awayAnd dose myself with gin.

P.S. I hate gin!

Bruce Leckie, Church Warden at Newnham has passed on the following sad news –

It is with a heavy heart that I write to tell you that Sir Roger Moate died on Monday 16th April, 2019.

Sir Roger’s daughter Sophie said “While it was unexpectedly soon, he had been unwell for some time and was deteriorating fast. The end came very peacefully at home.”

Roger was a great friend to many and a central figure in our community for a long time. He will be missed.

His funeral will be at Newnham Church on Tuesday 7th May at 2.30pm with a burial in the Churchyard. All are welcome.

There will be a memorial service at St. Mary’s Faversham later in the year.

Newnham Brownies activities in April

We had a good turnout for Mothering Sunday parade, beforehand the Brownies creating special rosettes for their mothers which some wore. Our oldest Brownie proudly carried the flag, and others carried flower baskets. They played ‘All things Bright & Beautiful’ on handbells, read the Gospel reading, read the prayers, took the collection & gave out posies. Many people in the congregation said that the Brownies’ involvement made it a super special occasion.

A rare April shower forced us to move venues for our

Easter Egg hunt, and in the village hall the girls

enjoyed the ever popular chocolate game, which

involves throwing a six on a dice, before trying to

carve into and eat a square of a large chocolate bar,

while wearing gloves, hats and scarves. Meanwhile

Snuggle Owl hid Easter eggs around the hall, which

the girls collected to take home along with the rest of

their chocolate booty from the evening.

Next month we shall be going out and about, as the

evenings get lighter and warm up.

If you would like your daughter to join Brownies,

there are places. Please get in touch with Rainbow

Owl on 01795 890211 or visit the Girl Guiding website
