It is hard to believe that the first marking period is already over. Our fall season kept us very busy with many sports and activities. Academics are in full swing and our teachers are already preparing for second marking period progress reports.

Hurricane Sandy presented us with many obstacles causing our schools to close for several days. Our quarterly exams were cancelled and the start of our second marking period was delayed. A decision to alter our holiday schedule has been made. Details on the changes are on page 7. A revised copy of the district calendar is available on the district’s website.

We are truly grateful for the outpouring of support both

during and after the storm. Our students, staff and the entire community reminded us of the true meaning of giving. Please remember that, if you are in need of anything, please contact our Guidance Department for referrals or look on the website for updates.

The winter season will bring us a wealth of activity in the sports department with both our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams and wrestlers heading into a busy season. Our school musical, ”The Little Mermaid” is working with a full cast and we are eagerly waiting the performances during the week of February 1. Our Science Fair follows right behind on February 5. Before you know it, we will be hosting our first 6th grade dance on March 1.

Please keep in mind and join us on January 23, 2013 at 7:00 pm for our PTO meeting. We welcome everyone and look forward to you joining us at the PTO gift auction on February 21, 2013 at Eagle Ridge in Lakewood. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and guarantees to be a fun night with lots of great prizes.

As we are hustling and bustling this holiday season, I hope we all take a moment to enjoy some special time with friends and family. May your season be bright and your new year a healthy, happy one. Always my best,

Girls Volleyball Team Has Phenomenal Season

The TRIN Girls Volleyball team has a lot to be proud of this year. The A team finished the season with an unprecedented, undefeated record of 12-0! The B team held their own with a season record of 11-1! The teams, lead by captains Jen Gregitis and Abagail Lorenzo, made full use of their daily practices to improve their play on the court and the work obviously paid off. The members of the A Team were: Gianna Addalli, Jen Gregitis, Abigail Rafael, Abagail Lorenzo, Ashley Lagary, Amanda Irwin, Jaclyn Emm, Kaylee Rice, Katie DeNardo, Meghan Toomey, Delilah Thomson, Hayley Samuel, Gianna LeBar and Sarah Esposito. The B team was comprised of Catherine

Van Sprang, Lindsey Hilla, Cassidy Kyle, Emily Byrnes, Ellianna Nardini, Kayla Gordon, Lillian Sclafani, Amanda McBurnie, Madison Desmond, Kelli Buell, Jessica Lagary, Jewel Lamicella, Jade Woscinski, Elizabeth Pitera, and Lindsay Cabey. Coaches Brennan and Maier agree that this was the best season yet for the girls for more reasons than finishing with an undefeated record. “The girls were a lot of fun to coach and the parents were extremely supportive. They are a great group of kids and they worked hard to improve their skills. We are really going to miss the 8th graders when they go to high school next year but are excited to see them continue to build their skills and improve even more. Of course, we hope many of the 6th and 7th graders return next year since we hope to keep our winning streak.”

CYCLE 74 News

On Nov. 19, 2012, students from Cycle 74 had a visit from author, Ty Drago. Ty was here to discuss two of his books, The Undertakers: Rise of the Corpses and its sequel, The Undertakers: Queen of the Dead. Both of these books involve Will Ritter and Helene Boettcher, two kids that have to fight the zombies. Ty spoke to the students about his writing process, including the

importance of remembering to just keep writing. He also told the students that he often rewrites his books 7-8 times each!!! To prepare for the author’s visit, students read the first three chapters of Mr. Drago’s first book, The Undertakers: Rise of the Corpses. The students studied the very vivid descriptions that the author used to create his zombie world. Students then wrote their own stories using vivid descriptions. All in all, there will be five books in the Undertaker series. We are looking forward to Ty’s visit after his 3rd book is released next year.

The Toms River Veterans Commission is proud to announce that Toms River Intermediate North had two winners in the 2012

Veterans Day Essay Contest!

First place, a proclamation and check in the amount of $150, was awarded to Stephanie Schille, Grade 7.

Second place, a proclamation and check in the amount of $100, was awarded to Madison Desmond, also in Grade 7.

Both young ladies were invited to attend the Town Council meeting on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 to read their essays and accept their awards.

SCIENCE FAIR This year the school science fair takes place in the afternoon on Tuesday, February 5, 2013. Students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade will use the scientific method to find answers to their big questions. These projects will be judged by teachers, members of the community, and high school honor students. Winners of our science fair will go to the next round of competition in the Jersey Shore Science Fair at Stockton State College.

CYCLE 62 NEWS

On Monday, November 19th cycle 62 enjoyed a delicious

Thanksgiving Feast in the cafeteria at Intermediate North. In celebration of the holiday and to kick off their annual canned food drive, students dined on

everything from roasted turkey to an array of decadent desserts. Parents were invited in to help with set-up and serving in a buffet style meal.

Many thanks to our 8th grade Art teacher, Ms. Jill Kasak, for creating a beautiful mural on our cafetorium wall. The display includes a copy of the district's "Anti- Bullying Rules" expressing our commitment to treat everyone with respect and dignity each day!

The Student Council is holding their annual coat drive to benefit local people in need!

Giving a warm coat to someone in need is such a powerful act of generosity! This year, we have been called upon to help our families, our neighbors and our friends counteract the effects of the devastating storm that has taken so much from all of us. Some of our community members still need a coat to keep them warm this winter.

Toms River Intermediate North Student Council is collecting clean, gently used coats as part of the One Warm Coat community service project. Coats of all shapes and sizes are

welcome! We are dedicated to distributing the coats, free of charge, directly to local children and adults. The program is an easy way for you and your family to recycle coats and jackets that you no longer need and to give to your community.

If you would like to donate a coat, please send it in with your child, or you can drop it off at guidance II between the hours of 7:00 and 2:00.

More people than ever need help these days! We are proud of the efforts of our students at Toms River Intermediate North whose generosity of spirit is making a real difference in their own communities!

One Warm Coat, www.onewarmcoat.org , is a national, non-profit organization that supports and encourages coat drives. More than one million coats have been provided to those in need since 1992.

Interact Club

Intermediate North’s Interact Club has been busy this fall. We presented Anti-Drug and Violence lessons to the 6

th grade students during Violence Awareness Week. A short

story was read and each student signed a pledge to be drug and violence free. We also collected items for three fall baskets that were donated to a gift auction benefitting one of our Dolphin students that had a specific need for medical equipment. Next, we held a fundraiser that will benefit specific Intermediate North families in need this holiday season. The students also had fun constructing “Holiday Cheer” cards for the residents of a local nursing home.
