For the truly gifted, winning can seem like an obligation.

“I knew growing up, that because I placed well, I was expected to be an All-American,” Virginia

swimmer Brielle White said. “It wasalmost automatic. I was supposed tomake finals at NCAAs. I expected it – I didn’t take it for granted – but Iknew that was a goal I was expected to achieve.”

White, a seven-time All-American,capped her brilliant career at the 2006NCAA national championship meetwith a third-place finish in the 100backstroke – swimming the sixth-

fastest time ever by an American – and a fourth-place finish in the 200 back, earning first-team All-America honors and breaking her own AtlanticCoast Conference records in both events. She wasalso rewarded with her second consecutive ACCSwimmer of the Year award.

“I wanted to leave U.Va. on a really high note,”White said. “I wanted to go out with a bang and Isucceeded.

“I’m so happy I placed fourth because that was my first time in the top eight in the 200 back,and I just wanted to bring it back for the teamand represent U.Va.”

When Rich Murray moved into the John Paul Jones Arena after spending 23 yearsworking in University Hall, he said it was like leaving a co-worker behind.

“In some ways, it’s like an old friend you’re going to miss, but the opportunity tomove to a new facility like the John Paul Jones Arena is wonderful,” said Murray, who

provides media relations support for the U.Va. men’s basketball team. Moving his office to the new arena wasn’t the only significant change

for Murray in 2006. His responsibilities changed when he assumed theposition of Associate Athletics Director for Public Relations. He continues towork with Coach Dave Leitao and the men’s basketball program, but alsoserves as a public relations liaison for the department. He works closelywith the department’s senior staff on public relations initiatives and pro-vides additional support in that area for Athletics Director Craig Littlepage.

Murray previously was responsible for the day-to-day administration ofthe department’s athletics media relations office. Those responsibilitiesare now held by Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations Jim

Daves, who arrived in December of 2005.“My goal with these new responsibilities is to make a positive contribution to the

work of the athletics department,” said Murray, who attended Washington & LeeUniversity and previously worked for a decade in media relations at James MadisonUniversity. “It’s an exciting time to be a member of the Virginia athletics departmentstaff.”

Dawn Staley is perhaps one of the most decorated point guards to come out ofPhiladelphia. After a stellar college career at Virginia in which she earned two NationalPlayer of the Year awards, Staley won three Olympic gold medals and returned to

her hometown as the head women’s basketball coach atTemple University.

So you can imagine why Virginia third-year Sharneé Zoll– who grew up in nearby Marlboro, N.J. – was a littletongue-tied when she first met her childhood idol inBoston when she was nine years old.

“Honestly, I was kind of embarrassed because I couldn’ttalk,” said Zoll, who for her entire college career hasadorned her sneakers with “729,” which is Staley’s NCAArecord number of career assists. “I just shook her handand was starstruck. I’ve never been like that before.”

To the delight of Cavalier women’s basketball fans, Zoll hasn’t shown those samejitters on the court. She has started all but one game in her first two seasons, and the5’7” Zoll averaged 11.2 points and an ACC-best 6.3 assists per game in 2006.

Zoll credited her confidence on the court to her experience playing in theWomen’s Under 19 World Championships, held in Tunisia in July 2005. The UnitedStates team went 8-0 and brought home gold.

Zoll brought that leadership back with her and led the Cavaliers to the quarterfi-nals of the WNIT. And, at the midpoint of her Virginia career, Zoll is nearly halfway– 360 assists – to Staley’s record of 729.

“For me to even be in the same sentence as Dawn or even the same record bookas her is an honor for me,” Zoll said.
