The SCQF Framework

WelcomeWelcome to your 2020/21 Senior Phase options brochure. We have a wide range of courses at different levels available to you as part of your Senior Phase years. Our courses are designed to complement your studies at school but also to assist your transition from school to the next phase of your life. You will learn skills that will help you in your next step, whether it is work, college or university.

Over the years, I have been delighted to note the large number of young people who have used our Senior Phase programmes to help them decide on their best career development pathway upon leaving school. For many, their positive initial experience of learning at North Highland College UHI inspired and helped them to return as full-time students on one of the wide range of courses we provide as part of the University of the Highlands & Islands.

I look forward to welcoming you to North Highland College UHI in June 2020 as part of our next Senior Phase programme.

What is Senior Phase?

I had always wanted to study with North Highland College UHI after completing Higher Business through the Senior Phase programme in my 5th year at high school. I went straight into my HNC Business instead of continuing to do my 6th year after realising the great opportunities on my doorstep.

Erin ShearsmithBA (Hons) Business Management graduate

The senior phase of Curriculum for Excellence is designed to offer young people the opportunity to develop and extend their education as they build a portfolio of qualifications. Our Senior Phase courses will introduce you to the possibilities of further and higher education with your local university or prepare you for the world of work.

Senior Phase Courses

After completing the Senior Phase course in Creative Industries, I moved on to studying HNC in Music with plans to progress onto degree level. I’d recommend Senior Phase to any pupils, as it gives them the experience for after school helping them decide what they would like to do. It also lets you get to know the College so you feel more comfortable if you choose to study full or part-time.

I chose to complete the NPA in Exercise and fitness because I want to go on to complete a degree and this is my starting point.

Studying at North Highland College UHI rather than at school is different, because you get to meet new people. I’d recommend this Senior Phase course because it helps you to learn more about your chosen subject and progress on to other courses

FoundationApprenticeships

I have been working on the Social Services and Healthcare Foundation Apprenticeship for 2 years. The Foundation Apprenticeship has helped me build up my confidence and to focus on the direction I would like my career to go in. Last year, I studied five different units which helped me learn a lot about health and social care and this year I have been on work experience which has allowed me to put this knowledge into practice.

What is a Foundation Apprenticeship? This is a new type of apprenticeship that helps young people get qualified through work-based learning whilst on placement and theoretical learning at college. These can be taken at S5/S6 subject choices and work towards a qualification over one or two years. It is the same qualification level as a Higher, but unlike other subjects, Foundation Apprenticeships take you out of the classroom and into the workplace.

A Foundation Apprenticeship gives the combination of a qualification and valuable work experience in some of Scotland’s most exciting industries, all projected growth in jobs.

Who is it for?Foundation Apprenticeships are for pupils making decisions about which subject they will study in S5 or S6. In general, they are suited to pupils who:

Are capable of working at SCQF level 6 (the same as a higher)

Want to try an alternative way to learning (not just in the classroom)

Have an interest in developing a greater awareness of a specific industry, with an aspiration of pursuing a career in that area

Pupils currently undertaking Foundation Apprenticeships:

54% had achieved between one and four National 5 qualifications before they had started

48% were planning to take two or three Highers in addition to their Foundation Apprenticeships

21% were taking it alongside four or five Highers!

What are the benefits?A Foundation Apprenticeship can help with accessing college or university courses or moving into employment.

Want to go to university? Foundation Apprenticeships are recognised by most of Scotland’s universities and colleges as the same level as a Higher. What’s more, industry experience will help your application stand out.

Thinking about an Apprenticeship? A Foundation Apprenticeship is a great stepping-stone on to a Modern Apprenticeship or Graduate level Apprenticeship.

Heading straight for work? A Foundation Apprenticeship gives you the specific skills an employer is looking for in their industry, plus other transferable skills such as problem solving, communication and teamwork. You’ll also be able to show qualities employers are looking for, such as good time keeping and a positive attitude

Recognition for university admissionA number of universities across Scotland now recognise the Foundation Apprenticeship as part of the entry criteria at the same level as Scottish Highers. The University of the Highlands & Islands for example is recognising the Foundation Apprenticeship as equivalent as two Scottish Highers. This will vary between institutions, so it is advisable to check with the individual universities on their requirements.

Scottish Universities currently recognising Foundation Apprenticeships as part of their entry criteria include: Abertay University, Robert Gordon University, Herriot Watt University, University of Aberdeen, University of Dundee, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier, Glasgow Caledonian University and University of Stirling.

It should be noted that where specified subjects are required for entry to a degree programme (for example, maths & physics for engineering), the Foundation Apprenticeships in Engineering will not replace that requirement, but will count as one of the additional subjects making up the total complement of qualifications and would positively enhance that application.

There are a few exceptions noted by institutions (for example, the Foundation Apprenticeship will not be accepted at the University of Glasgow or Edinburgh for Law, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at this point will be reviewed). However, it is recommended prior to any application being made to check with individual institutions regarding their entry requirements.
