Issues Around Competency ManagementCompanies cannot flexibly interact with content that
underlies the value proposition of Talent Management systems
Proprietary content has no Digital Rights ManagementDifferent “level” needs (granularity) of different
systems requires flexible, non-captive architecture that puts the client, not the technology, first Need to support behaviors as well as competencies
Lack of data consistency inhibits research capabilityMaking the case:

Salary.com Strategy For ITG Content
The ITG competencies, job profiles, and learning resources will be combined with Salary.com’s rich job content to enable the TalentManager suite.
Salary.com supports several modes of integration as needed by customers, including imports, automated data exchange, and XML integration.

Key Data Integration Questions
Does the software database provide for all the data elements of a robust competency model?
Are there import facilities provided by the software provider to allow data file transfer into the system in a systematic way?
If so, is the vendor’s format published and available to the data provider or the client?
Does the content provider supply a data format or reformatting capabilities that the client or software provider can use to load the data?
What kind of integration is required by the client? Is XML supported and if so, is it standard or custom?

Our Experiences
Typical Approach: ITG provides its data in tab delimited files reformatted for the particular need of the client or software partner – Easy to load.
Software Vendors: Are not typically involved in a data load unless it is a hosted solution.
XML – In the last two years we have only had one request by a client to use XML and it was a special IBM XML Format.
CONNECTING PEOPLE, PAY AND PERFORMANCE
Our ExperiencesSaba – ITG and Saba have a technical relationship
where the data formatting issues have been addressed and a load program has been created to assist import.
SAP – ITG and its clients use conventional file import features to load data into SAP systems.
Non-Conforming Vendors – Some software providers do not provide any import features for mass loading of competency data. In these instances, the process is reduced to “cut and paste” or custom building of import by user.
