Hello new creations happy February

Review Last month we explored what it is to be made new Because of what Christ did for us on the cross we have been made alive and trans-formed

I know I just said this last month but what a gift We no longer have to be slaves to our sinful nature-we have the privilege of being Godrsquos servants

So what are we going to do about it I know you know part of the answer (Irsquoll give you a hinthellip itrsquos the name of this magazine) but letrsquos take it a step further- what can that look like

Do we give God gifts Impress him with what we can offer out of thanks

This is what Micah chapter 6 unpacks In verses 3-5 God reminds Israel of the things He has done for them- freeing them from Pharaoh delivering them to the promise land He is reminding them that He has not done them wrong but blessed them

Verses 6 and 7 ask

How can I stand up before God and show proper respect to the high GodShould I bring an armload of offerings topped off with yearling calves

What Does the LORD Require

Not quite I have a feeling you may have heard the response to these ques-tions before Verse 8

ldquoHe has shown you O man what is good And what does the LORD require of you To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your Godrdquo

So-there is our answer in response to all Christ has done for us we are to act fairly to love mercy and kindness and to be always with our LORD in a constant and humble walk

This is not a suggestion it is expected of us

This month then uncover what this means-how we can carry it out to more fully glorify God and to give thanks for all we have been given-to do what is good and expected

Hollywood New York City London and Tokyo-today we consider these cities to be major destinations in which we experience culture entertainment hope for success and really live life Anything you want could be found and achieved in one of these cities Babylon in the ancient world was also considered a destination city-it was the capital of the world in its time In fact one of the Seven Wonders of the World was King Nebuchadnezzarrsquos hanging gardens which he had built for his wife

Much like in our large cities today Babylon was rich with many different cultures and religious beliefs You could believe in anything you wanted and do just about anything you wanted-just like today

Take a couple of minutes and read Daniel chapter 3 and while you are reading think about the religious freedom during this time

With all the ldquofreedomrdquo to worship whatever gods the people wantedhellipdo you find it ironic that the King made a statue of himself and made people worship him Sohellipwas there really religious freedom

Or you may be thinkinghellipwe donrsquot have kings to make us bow down to themhellipso how is this similar to today

Well first of all you are right-we donrsquot have kings to-day But we do have a culture that makes idols that we worship We worship sports teams money clothing styles-we may even worship the idea of being lsquotoler-antrsquo because we would not want to offend anyone

What we really may be saying-is that we would rather follow the crowd then stand out and face the blazing furnace of criticism and sarcastic comments because we have chosen to be lsquodifferentrsquo or possibly stand alone when everyone else is bowing down to the cul-ture around us

In the midst of cultural social and physical death Shadrach Meshach and Abednego choose to stand out In fact their statement to the King was ldquoIf we are thrown into the blazing furnace the God we serve is able to deliver us from it BUT even if he doesnrsquot we want you to know Your Majesty that we will not serve your gods or worship your imagerdquo

The key word in this statement is BUT These three men are willing to die and go against the culture to stand up for what they knew was True They knew their God is able to saveBUThellipeven if God doesnrsquot save them they are willing to still stand up for what is right Thatrsquos how much they loved and respected God

My questions to you are 1 What are the idols in your lifemdashthe things you give more attention to or make more important than the Truth or time with God 2 Are you willingmdashno matter the costmdashto stand up for what you know is True

Maybe you canrsquot answer those questions because you donrsquot even think God is worth it or able to save in the midst of the fire Then my challenge to you is to wrestle through these questions and doubtshellipbecause I promise you-the God of Heaven will prove Himself faithful He wants to walk with you in the furnace ldquoAnd what does the LORD require of you To act justly to love mercy and to walk humbly with your Godrdquo

My good friend who aspires to go into marriage counseling once told me the most important aspect of marriage is communication In reality the most important part of any relationship is communication There is importance in talking in person (as opposed to texting email instant messaging or even a phone conversation) You cannot hide your emotion and you are aware of the other person (so you wonrsquot say some of the horrible things that are communicated through texting)

But that is not my point This is If communication is so important why the heck do we communicate so little with God Really Irsquom not talking about the common ldquooh and thanks for the food and bless us Amenrdquo or many other powerless prayers we are ac-custom to Irsquom talking about a face to face with the Almighty God We will spend $1025 and three hours in a theater but we canrsquot spend ten minutes with God A relationship with God requires communication In this we cannot lapse

If communication is so important why the heck do we communicate so little with God

and bow myself before God on high

Now nothing will come of this if I try and guilt trip you into spending more real time in prayer We all know we should pray more Itrsquos hard Instead of being guilted into it letrsquos start to crave it We have to change our attitude from ldquoGod desires me to prayrdquo to ldquoGod desires merdquo and from there we will want to seek Him in prayer

One more thing in John 1027 Jesus says ldquoMy sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow merdquo This verse weighed on me for months Read all of John 10 for more If I am Jesusrsquo ldquosheeprdquo I should hear his voice Now I donrsquot think this is always an audible voice (although it can be) so then what is his voice First Jesusrsquo voice is in the Word of God The Bible Through it we know what he said on earth and we follow that Simple But second prayer is meant to be personal communication a two way street We must seek his voice Irsquom going to let you study that on your own but here is some scripture John 1027 1 Kings 1911-13 Mark 135 Isaiah 3021 There is so much more to be said on it Study for yourself but more importantly pray It will take time to develop Donrsquot get frustrated donrsquot give up (Luke 181-8) Be like the disciples after they had seen all the miracles and the life that Jesus lived what did they ask him ldquoLord teach us to prayrdquo (Luke 111)

Whenever February 14 rolls around I tend to see a wide range of responses to the holiday Overall they tend to be negative guys complain about having to spend money on a certain girl girls worry about not getting flowers singles proclaiming that itrsquos Single Awareness Day (SAD) because they feel overly aware of their single status Often when I express Valentinersquos Day as my favorite holiday I hear all these reasons why itrsquos so awful And yes I can see how it can be a really terrible day if you let all the negative things damper you Yes PDA does seem to increase Yes you will have people rubbing in your face all the great gifts they received but thatrsquos not what this holiday should be like It should be a day to express love

Donrsquot give up on me yethellip I know that I just said the word love and yes this is an article about Valentinersquos Day This isnrsquot going where you think we arenrsquot talking mushy gushy love but a type of love that shows how we value and appreciate each other brotherly love God has blessed each one of us with different gifts and abilities and I think Valentinersquos Day can be a day to express our love for each other Think of all the people in your life your classmates youth group peers family coworkers Many of these people in your life you love and appreciate but donrsquot really have a socially acceptable way to get in their face and say to them ldquoI love you so much I appreciate how you have these characteristics how you treat people this way how you act in this matterrdquo ohhellip wait isnrsquot that what Valentinersquos Day all about I challenge you to put aside your prejudice against Valentinersquos Day and step up and share what you love about people with them this February 14

How to Show LoveI love the boxes of valentines that you can buy at any chain store Indeed they are intended for elementary students who are forced to give one of these love-themed cartoon-based notes to each of their classmates making them so much more fun to use outside of that context I love to buy the most ridiculous packs that you can find (itrsquos one of those the uglier it is the better it is moment) and make them out to people in my life I always try to choose people who I truly love and appreciate but struggle to tell them that I write them a short note on one of these cards and stick it somewhere they can find on Valentinersquos Day

Further FriendshipsBe open to deeper relationships to develop with people you express brotherly love with on Valentinersquos Day Words of encouragement are always impactful but when they are tied in with expression of love they mean so much more Be open to mak-ing deeper friendships with those individuals and be prayerfully seeking ways to be connecting together with them in your relationship with the Lord

Juicy Heavenly Sweet Tart Hhmmmyummmm Those are all the thoughts that pass through my mind when I am savoring tasty bits of pomegranate in my mouth What a pleasant treat

Interestingly enough the Israelites thought so too The fruit is spoken of all over the Old Testament Particularly in Numbers 205 it is used to describe a wonderful place It is used in the description of the wonderful land the Lord is bringing His people to in Deuteronomy 88 In Haggai 219 the Lord uses the fruit and others to describe a renewed promise of bearing fruit And King Solomon even adorned his home with two hundred pomegranates (1 Kings 720) So you see not only are Pomegranates a tasty fruit but they have a presence in the Bible

But thatrsquos not all therersquos so many parallels to the fruit and how we serve the Lord Have you ever noticed how a pomegranate is simple on the outside not boasting of what is inside As I slice the fruit open I am filled with awe at whatrsquos inside Not only is it filled with tasty little pouches of juice but it has other benefits

Herersquos a few tidbits about pomegranates to savor-Pomegranates are drought tolerant-The juice can be used as an antiseptic when applied to cuts -One pomegranate delivers about 40 of an adultrsquos daily vitamin C requirement-The inner membranes and rind are useful as a skin wash

Surprising I never knew such a complex fruit look-ing simple on the outside could be so beautiful and useful insidehellipuntil I cut into it We are called to be like that The Lord even told Samuel to look not at the outside of a man but at his heart (1 Samuel 167) Now how do I become like that fruit beautiful and useful Well Irsquom glad you mentioned it Micah 68 sums that up

ldquoAnd what does the Lord require of you To act justly to love mercy and to walk humbly with your Godrdquo

After doing a little digging Irsquove come to discover that acting justly means to do what is right in the Lord in action or judgment loving mercy means to care compassionately for and bless others in distress and to walk humbly means to live in a way pleasing to the Lord that makes us patient under trials without focus-ing on our selves but outwardly on others

Each of these things starts inside of us by having a personal relationship with the Lord Now I know wersquove all heard this often but after reading that description do we honestly believe we might accom-plish this on our own Even the pomegranate didnrsquot obtain all of its seeds on its own (there are 840 seeds in one of the fruits by the way) It was part of a tree Remember we are His people grafted into His vine Without that vine we are dried up and withered away Instead let us spend more time with our Jesus In do-ing so we will be filled with seeds to plant in others Letrsquos be like that pomegranate simple and colorful on the outside yet full of beauty and usefulness on the inside

Therersquos one more thing I should tell you a pomegran-ate will burst open naturally when it is ripe The Lord is working on each of us ripening us up and prepar-ing us for moments when we will burst forth and plant seeds across this world But to be ready we need to remember our walk with the Lord comes from the inside out

Even Jesus took time to be quiet and pray with just the Lord

It reminds me of a song I absolutely love Hillsong Unitedrsquos ldquoFrom the Inside Outrdquo Herersquos a few of the songrsquos lines Irsquoll let you check out the rest

ldquoMy heart and my soul I give You control Consume me from the inside out Lord Let justice and praise become my embrace to love You from the inside outrdquo

Thatrsquos truly what my heart cries I donrsquot want to just go through the motions but to truly love Him from the inside of me to my outward actions embracing all He calls me to be In Micah 68 we are challenged to walk with our Lord in a way that is displayed for oth-ers in our actions toward them but also that comes from deep within our heart To be just love mercy and act humbly we need to have a right heart with our Father This is a challenge to take your new life deeper with him privately and publicly

Irsquom going to leave you with one last bit of info-pomegranates come in many varieties with colors ranging from yellow-orange to deep reddish-purple Remember your walk with the Lord is your own not anotherrsquos He has created us each unique to serve Him acting justly loving mercy and walking humbly with Him

40 Daysre-examining how we do Lent

I grabbed my tray from the lunch lady and sighedhellipit was Friday and that meant spaghetti without any meat My 9-year-old self didnrsquot understand why the weird Catholics didnrsquot eat meat on Fridays and why my friends had to give up having any sort of fun for 40 days leading up to Easter In my house we didnrsquot celebrate lent ndash and neither did my church so apparently it was rather unimportant

As I came to college I met friends who would give up any-thing from Facebook to sweets to shopping during lent I decided to do some researchndashI figured if this was a require-ment for Christians I better find something to give up

We can trace lent back to the early beginnings of the churchndashas Christianity was formed into a religion in the centuries after Jesus died they came up with several differ-ent traditions that we still see today Itrsquos important to note that Scripture doesnrsquot require Christians to practice lentndashso if you havenrsquot donrsquot worry about your salvation (as if salva-tion was based on your actions anywayhellip)

It is important to note too that lent is not unbiblical even though lent itself isnrsquot actually mentioned in it The number 40 however occurs several times in the Biblendashhow about the rainstorm that kept Noah afloat 40 days and 40 nights (Genesis 712) And when Jesus is taken out in the wilderness to be tempted by Satanndashhow long was his fast Yupndash40 days (Matthew 42) The number 40 definitely has a biblical significance and lent is an opportunity for us to enter into that story

These are the 40 days leading up to Good Fridayndashthe day when we remember the crucifixion of Jesus As Christians Good Friday is a time to celebrate the grace of God in granting us forgiveness of all of our sins at the cross Lent is a way for us to prepare our hearts for remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus Itrsquos easy to lose the eternal significance of the day in the midst of the Easter bunny egg hunts and a big Sunday meal Practicing lent is an opportunity for us to set our focus on what we are truly celebrating

Typically people who choose to celebrate lent do so by fasting Now typically when I think of fastingndashI think of abstaining from eating food for a certain amount of time Maybe some of you have done the 30 hour famine or something similar Fasting is a religious tradition that has been happening since the Old Testament Many charac-ters including Daniel and Jesus gave up food for a certain period of time so that they could commune with God Oftentimes today Christians will fast to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ or to seek Godrsquos wisdom on a decision By denying our flesh we require much more strength from Godndashwhether it is mental emotional or physical God desires this kind of dependence from usndashyet we often choose self-sufficiency

Before we move forward let me tell you what fasting isnrsquot Fasting should never ever ever be for worldly gain You might askhellipwhy would giving up something equal worldly gain Some choose to give up eating unhealthy foodndashwhich though sacrificial can turn into a weight-loss program

Others choose to give up shopping -which can leave their bank account a lot more full to indulge in a different way Fasting should always be motivated for the glory of God It isnrsquot necessarily wrong to fast when you need help making an important decisionndashas long as the purpose is to hear what God wants you to do rather than trying to force God to honor your selfish decisions Fasting should always be motivated by the glory of God

So as you think of something you could give up for lent think of something that is truly sacrificial I could give up coffee for lent but that wouldnrsquot be a sacrifice at all I hate coffee I could give up watching TV but I donrsquot watch TV very oftenndashand I doubt it would make a significant impact on my daily life As I pray about what I am going to ldquogive uprdquo I want it to be something that will create more space for God in my life God should occupy all of the spaces in my life and I should actually try to be fitting everything else in my schedule Lent is a great opportunity to move closer into that lifestyle

A few things to think about as you consider honoring lent this year What is one area of my faith that I want to grow in Do I have an upcoming decision that I need Godrsquos help with (college summer plans etc) What is something that takes up too much of my time How am I going to fill the void of what Irsquom fasting from with Christ and not just pick up something else Make sure you prepare yourself for the fast so that it is valuable and truly motivated by the glory of God not just your desire to do something Christian And donrsquot be afraid to give up something boldndashdonrsquot let othersrsquo perceptions of you steal your calling to be radical

Wersquore talking about how to live out the verse of Micah 68 this month a part of which tells us to ldquodo justicerdquo This part of scripture is also translated as ldquoact justlyrdquo (NIV translation) to ldquodo what is rightrdquo (NLT) and ldquodo what is fair and justrdquo (the Message) We are called to ensure that others are treated as they should be to act so that people around us receive fair treat-ment In our day to day lives we should know how to act this out so those around us are treated fairly By making sure everyone is included By taking care of the needs of those around us By being polite

But there are also ways that you can get involved outside of your normal routine to see that people around the world are given fair and just treatment Now you donrsquot have to go all out and try to take care of people across the globe (wersquoll get to that in a little bit) so wersquoll start with ways you can get involved locally

One way is to volunteer in your community There are lots of places that you can get involved with whether at your church in your school or with a number of other organizations that may be active in your community Lots of schools have after school programs for elementary amp preschool aged kids that would love to have you lend a hand and play with the kids involved Your church probably also has some sort of program for younger kids whether itrsquos an everyday thing or once a week Talk to your youth pastordirector and see if you can get involved in your churchrsquos Awana program or similar programs for kids to learn more about the Bible

More ways to get involved with kids in your area is through programs like Boys amp Girls Clubs your local YMCA or through a mentorship program either through your church or an organization like Donald Millerrsquos Mentoring Project Other places that would love to have you volunteer your time are nursing homes amp hospitals daycares special events your church may be hosting and last (but certainly not least) camp Most camps (including Lake Beauty) love to have people come up and volunteer for summer camps amp retreats so if you are able to spend a week or weekend at camp hanging out with kids and invest in their lives (Usually you need to be 18 or have gone through a leadership program at the camp)

Maybe you want to get more involved on a national or global scale There are lots of options in that respect too The first of which is to simply donate your money Send a check to get clean water to a village in Asia donate to the Salvation Army (either monetary or with your old clothes) help Habitat for Humanity build homes for victims of natural disasters buy a pair of shoes from TOMS glasses from Warby Parker a hat from Krochet Kids or a Product (Red) shirt to give others necessary items such as shoes eyecare a livelihood knitting hats for others or finding a cure for AIDS

If you want to do a little more than give monetarily give your time by joining the local chapter (or maybe even starting one) of your favorite organization Help them spread the word of the wrongs they are trying to right through freeing slaves (IJM Not For Sale Abolition Intrsquol) rescuing amp rehabilitating child soldiers (Falling Whistles Invisible Children Project AK-47) digging wells (CharityWater BloodWater Mission Wine to Water) ending poverty (ONE Campaign) providing a means of living (Heifer Intrsquol Mercy Corp Oxfam) or support a childrsquos education (World Vision Compassion)

The last way to get involved is to go Go on a missions trip It can be local like visiting the inner city and feeding the homeless Or you can go global Lots of churches and youth groups send teams all around the world If you are graduating look into a program like YWAM or the ONE Campaign and their internships abroad

It may seem daunting to get involved with one of these causes My advice donrsquot do it alone Find a group of friends to join you Volun-teer together Start a club for human rights in your school Take your youth group to Feed My Starving Children Sponsor a child with your friends Find a way to get involved

Lastly pray Pray for these organizations Pray for the people they serve Pray that God might use you to help someone today

even while we were dead in our transgressions It is by grace you have been savedrdquo (Ephesians 24-5 emphasis added)

What is not to love about that

I donrsquot think the command in Micah is for us to accept this loving kindness this mercy- checed and to leave it at that Loving mercy does not end at being appreciative

To truly love something in this sense means to under-stand it be thankful for it and then want nothing more than to pass it on to others Why would we not want others to understand this type of covenant (promise) based love

Here we have another opportunity to be as Christ to people We get to bless others with love kindness toler-ance goodness faithfulness and gentleness (Romans 522-23) even when they do not deserve it

This means forgiving quickly loving always and serving those around you without ceasing Isnrsquot this what we are taught throughout the New Testament Jesus was the epitome of merciful Therefore to be like Christ we must also show mercy

So- love mercy Be thankful for the amazing bless-ings you have received from God- his fulfillment of his promises and his love Just remember it doesnrsquot stop there

Micah 68 tells us to love mercy or kindness goodness or a combination of all three depending on your transla-tion This variety doesnrsquot mean one is right and others are wrong- it just means translations are complicated

The Hebrew word (in English letters ldquoChecedrdquo) holds a lot of meaning and cannot be very well translated into one word for us to understand

Checed is a covenant word- it refers to the way God loves those with whom He has made a promise While at the time it referred to His promise with Israel it can just as easily apply to us today See God has promised to ldquonever leave you nor forsake yourdquo (Deut 318) even though we certainly do not deserve it

Remember ldquoall have sinned and fall short of the glory of Godrdquo (Romans 323-26)- we are all sinners and cannot do anything near enough to earn salvation

This is where mercy comes in

God always fulfills His promises but with such wayward recipients us He has to be merciful What does that mean exactly then

Mercy is receiving something wonderful- even though we do not deserve it

We are filled with sin ldquobut because of his great love for us God who is rich in MERCY made us alive in Christ

Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression

When I was asked to write this article I felt quite inadequate on the subject Walk-ing humbly with our God What does that even mean How could I possibly write about something that I donrsquot even have figured out The only answer I could come up with (in my near sighted mind) was that I am supposed to learn as I write I hope I can take you on this adventure with meLetrsquos start out with defining humble We canrsquot exactly dig deeper into something if we donrsquot understand what it means even on the surface

Dictionarycom has five definitions of humble as an adjective (a describing word) the second on the list being ldquohaving a feeling of insignificance inferiority subser-vience etcrdquo They have three definitions of humble in the verb (action) tense my favorite being ldquoto destroy the independence power or will ofrdquo

I believe that these two go hand in hand You canrsquot give your entire life wholeheart-edly to something if you donrsquot acknowledge that it is greater than you Now this doesnrsquot mean that you have to walk around with your tail between your legs be-cause after all we do serve the Most High King But even Jesus humbled himself before others

In case this is getting kind of a negative feel I would like to remind you of the passage this monthrsquos article is focused around Micah 68

ldquoHe has shown you O mortal what is good And what does the LORD require of you

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your Godrdquo

Two things stuck out to me in this passage Firstly He has shown us what is good This is not something God has shown us just to be a jerk or to fill our thoughts with one more thing we need to work on He has shown it to us because it is good It will grow us in to better people It will strengthen our relationship with Him And it will help us to glorify God in all that we do

Secondly the LORD requires this of us Again while itrsquos not God just piling one more thing on the list it is still required If you think about it though what else would be the definition of a Christ follower if not just loving and humble These are all the characteristics of Christ And if we are following Him and modeling our lives after Him then this is exactly what our lives should look like So this brings us back to the question What does walking humbly with God look like

It looks like giving everything over to Him Your plans Future goals Financial situation Friends Thoughts Words Actions etc This thought used to scare me If I give everything up to God that will mean I canrsquot have anything I want

This could not be further from the truth God knows our hearts And He longs to give us the desires of our heart But He knows us truer and deeper than we even know ourselves So while we might think something is what we truly desire in the moment God knows the person we want to be in the future and leads us toward that goal

Eventually after continually giving up your desires to Him your heart will align with His and it wonrsquot be a task anymore You will simply be walking hand in hand with Christ living the best life you could imagine The life you want deep down

It is truly a beautiful thing

In closing I would like to remind you You are not doing this alone God doesnrsquot require us to do these things and peace out Hersquos going to stand by you in every-thing Good Bad Thick Thin He will never forsake you He loves you

And that is the most beautiful thing

The dictionary is basically my BFF I love looking up the definitions of words I donrsquot fully understand and breaking them down until they make more sense A few months ago I looked up the word ldquohumblerdquo Humble has always been a word that attracts me a quality I desire to have Yet I struggled with the meaning behind that I related humility to relationships and put-ting others ahead of myself When I applied humility to humanity it was hard To be authentically humble I had to consider everyone my equal And letrsquos be real there are a lot of times in my life where I view myself as better than others Being humble with them was tough because if they werenrsquot my favorite people in the world then I didnrsquot really want to put the in the effort it took to be humble This method of humility left me with more questions then answers and convinced me that humility was impossible

Turns out it is Unless I bring God back into the picture ldquoJesus looked at them and said lsquoWith man this is impossible but with God all things are possiblersquordquo (Matthew 1925-27) Every question about humility that I had was focused on peopleand I di-rected these questions to myself No wonder I was still confused All I needed to do was step back and ask God for insight on how to be humble And so began my search with a Bible dictionary and Jesus

Humble modest and not proud Okay but what does modest mean

Modest Not boastful about abilities or possessions How do I know if Irsquom being boastful

Boast To talk proudly about what you can do or own in order to impress people And then comes the definition that made it all fall into place for me

Pride Pleased and satisfied with what you have done You have self-respect and a sense of your own importance you think too highly of your own abilities and values Today the cultural meaning of humility has negative connotations People strive to not be humble

Instead pride is a thing to be cherished Importance is valued Except as lovers of Christ we are supposed to look act and think differently from the world Humility isnrsquot about people Itrsquos not about being the best being up front saying the right words Humility is recognizing that God is EVERYTHING God gave you all your abilities and talents money and worldly pos-sessions You have no reason to boast in any of these things When our focus is Christ we realize we have nothing left to be proud of After spending more and more time with Jesus His characteristics like humility begin to rub off on us As our lives become reflections of His glory humility becomes second nature

Itrsquos Valentinersquos Day and yoursquore sitting on the couch at home dateless and down in the dumps Everyone else is out at a movie or a nice restaurant with their boygirlfriend while you have no one Sound familiar If you have a boygirlfriend thatrsquos great If they are a Christian this relationship can be such a source of accountability and encouragement as you challenge each other to become more Christlike In this article though I want to speak to those who are still single waiting for God to bring that special person into their life I struggle with comparing myself to others When I was a freshman in college it seemed like everyone around me was paired up with a boygirlfriend and some were even talking about their relationship lead-ing to marriageand I was left in the dust with no boyfriend in the foreseeable future One day I was seized by panic when the thought suddenly hit me What if all the ldquogood guysrdquo were taken by the time I got around to wanting to date one of them If I didnrsquot act now would I ever have a boyfriend or get married

I let the ldquowhat ifsrdquo consume my thoughts for a few minutesand then I flipped on the radio which was playing Britt Nicolersquos song ldquoYourdquo The song starts out

ldquoIrsquove been looking for love in anotherrsquos eyesrdquo and talks about how we try to replace God with other things and people God showed me that at the root of my desire for a boyfriend was actually a desire for security knowing that someone would always be there for me to go to in hard times but until I learned to find my self-worth and security in God He wasnrsquot going to let me try to find those things through a human being Maybe yoursquore in the same boat and God still has a few things to teach you before yoursquore ready for a boygirlfriend Find joy in this season of life If yoursquore always discontent wishing and waiting for the day that God will send that person you might miss what Hersquos trying to do through you right now Irsquom 25 and I still have never had a boyfriend but I have found such contentment and joy in this time and I have been able to serve in ways that I probably wouldnrsquot have if I was in a serious relationship Psalm 13916 says ldquoAll the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to berdquo Each season of life has its benefits and if God hasnrsquot called you to be in a dating relationship you can be sure that itrsquos for a reason and that He does have a unique and perfect plan for youndashHe hasnrsquot forgotten about you

This is a fun game to play with a big group ten or more is best because just like in a regular game of Telephone the longer the story is passed around the crazier it gets

How to play1 Give a stack of paper to each player

2 Each player writes a crazy sentence on a single piece of paperndashthe more com-plex the better

3 Everyone passes their sentence to the person on their left

5 Each participant places their drawing on top of the paper with the sentence and passes the whole stack to their left

6 Then everyone writes a sentence explaining what is going on in the picture they were just handed places the new sentence on top of the picture and contin-ues passing the stack to their left

Reflection on the Arab WorldAlethea Morrissey

Do you remember 911 Of course you do who doesnrsquot Irsquom going to bet you were traumatized Irsquoll even bet that you thought some nasty things about Muslims Evil militant devil-worshipping people right Thatrsquos sure what I thought For a long time I held bitterness and a hatred for Muslims in my heart Over the years the Lord has slowly turned that hatred into pity pity into sadness sadness into empathy and empathy into love Itrsquos been a long process but now the Lord has given me a passion for his people in the Middle East and here who do not know his name

This January I was given the opportunity to travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for three weeks I met so many won-derful people who taught me so many things For instance the Arab culture is incredibly generous Every time our group of nine students walked into a home we were immediately plied with coffee tea dates and chocolates They always begged us to stay for dinner and would literally cook an entire goat for us We never left a home empty handed and by the end of the trip we had to leave some of the gifts behind because they would not all fit into our suitcases

Arabs are also extremely family-oriented teaching their children from a young age to respect their elders and care for their siblings The father or grandfather is the patriarch making all of the major decisions for the household with his wifersquos help of course As one Omani girl told me ldquoMy husband is the president and I am the government we make decisions togetherrdquo

Muslims are also extremely religious Another girl I talked to told me she wakes up at 430 every morning to read her Quran and to pray They pray five times a day every day They give to the poor are welcoming to strangers and do many good deeds Their faith is truly inspiring except for one thing the heart behind their actions In the Islamic faith there is no way of knowing whether or not yoursquore going to heaven Your only hope of salvation rests entirely in your hands If your good deeds outweigh your bad you will go to heaven In life there is no rest for your soul

It breaks my heart that such a huge people group believes that they have to earn their salvation They do not know that no matter how many good deeds they do they can never make up for their sin They donrsquot know that it is only through Christ that they can be saved Less than 2 of the population of the UAE are Christ-followers according to Operation World Itrsquos one of the least-reached places in the world Pray that the Lord would send his people to this region and that Arab hearts would be receptive to his word

How many times has this happened to you Yoursquore cruising down the highway on your way to baseball practice in your red Corvette top down in the bright summer sun Suddenly a pickup towing a trailer of hogs passes you from behind blocking the rays of sun tanning your body and overloading your nostrils with the stench of manure Your day not to mention your tan is ruined

Now as some of you readers are not licensed drivers and even fewer of you likely own a red Corvette chances are that you have never had this exact experience However almost all of you have at one point in your life ridden in a motor vehicle Corvette or otherwise By doing so you experienced what in physics is known as relative motion that is to say your position changed with respect to another object

To better understand relative motion let us return to the Corvette-pickup scenario Just for kicks we will add a highway patrolman to the story This patrolman is in his squad car which is parked on the side of the road and is not moving with respect to the earth As you in your Corvette approach the position of the officer he measures your speed to be 50mph He also measures the speed of the pickup passing you to be 70mph In this case the patrolman (as well as the earth which the patrolman is not moving relative to) is the ldquoframe of referencerdquo A frame of reference is a viewpoint from which the motions of all other objects in the universe are observed From the viewpoint of the patrol-man your Corvette is moving towards him at 50mph and the pickup towards him at 70mph We can accept this as fact no problem

Now let us take the same scenario and observe it from your point of view This time you and your Corvette are taken as the frame of refer-ence This means that all objects in the universe are considered to be in motion relative to you From your standpoint the passing pickup is now moving at 20mph not 70 But this only makes sense right If the patrolman saw your Corvette traveling at 50mph and the pickup at 70mph that means that the pickup was passing you at 20mph which is the difference between 70 and 50 So the pickup is now considered to be traveling 20mph away from you Also from your frame of reference the patrolman is no longer stationary he is now moving towards you at 50mph In addition everything that was stationary relative to the patrol-

man is also moving towards you at 50mph including the squad car the highway even the earth So from your frame of reference the entire planet is passing beneath your tires at the speed of 50mph

At this point some of you may say ldquoBogus The earth doesnrsquot move every time I take my car out for a spin Thatrsquos ridiculousrdquo Granted it does seem a bit silly that by taking yourself as a frame of reference you can claim that the entire globe is moving However is it any less silly to assume that the earth itself is a nonmoving absolute fixed frame of ref-erence The earth both rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun Our solar system is located in a spinning arm of the Milky Way Even our galaxy is in motion relative to other galaxies Is there any fixed frame of reference from which everything in the universe can be said to be in absolute motion to The answer according to Einstein is No

In 1905 Albert Einstein published what is know as his Special Theory of Relativity in which he made what he called two ldquofundamental postu-latesrdquo The first of these is the principle of relativity an idea that had been similarly explored by Galileo over 250 years earlier Basically this principle states that there is no absolute frame of reference that can be used to determine if an object is at rest or in uniform motion The laws of physics hold true for all frames of reference and no frame of refer-ence can be considered ldquorightrdquo or ldquowrongrdquo The hog-hauling pickup can be said to be traveling at 70mph when viewed from the patrolmanrsquos frame of reference but the statement that the pickup is traveling at 20mph according to the Corvettersquos frame of reference is just as true

It should be stated here that the term ldquouniform motionrdquo refers to the motion of an object whose velocity is constant that is the object is neither accelerating nor decelerating Simply put constant velocity is equivalent to using cruise control While on cruise control your carrsquos speedometer will read the same speed Acceleration on the other hand is equivalent to pressing down on your accelerator when a traffic light turns from red to green and the needle on your speedometer moves up from zero In this entire article all velocities are assumed to be constant In fact Einsteinrsquos Special Theory made no new claims about accelerated motion only uniform motion

Back to our story Letrsquos say that in your frustration at having your day ruined by a trailer of pigs you decide to take one of your baseballs that

you have in the car with you and while continuing to drive throw it forward at the pickup (which I should mention is very rude behavior but necessary to the explanation of Special Relativity) You are in fact a very good baseball player and can throw a 90mph speedball How fast does the ball travel Well from your frame of reference the answer is 90mph That is how fast the ball is leaving your hand and that is the velocity you will observe the ball to have traveling away from you The patrolman however will observe the ballrsquos motion from his frame of reference He will see the ball moving at 140mph which is the speed of you in your Corvette (50mph) added to the speed of the ball when leaving your hand (90mph) This all should make sense with what wersquove learned so far

Okay letrsquos change things up a bit Letrsquos say that rather than throw-ing a baseball you instead take out your rage on this pickup driver by flashing him with your headlights (again very rude shame on you) Light travels at approximately 186000 miles per second or 671 million miles per hour Had you the necessary measuring equipment this is the velocity at which you would observe the light to travel as it left your Corvettersquos headlights And according to what we know about relative motion the highway patrolman should measure the light to be traveling 50mph faster than this due to the fact that the light is being projected from your Corvette which is traveling at 50mph relative to the patrol-manrsquos frame of reference So we would predict that the officer would measure the speed of the light to be somewhere around 671 million + 50 miles per hour a very small difference compared to the speed of light observed from the Corvettersquos frame of reference but a measurable difference nonetheless Well herersquos the kicker when it comes to relativ-ity the patrolman would observe the light to be traveling at exactly the same speed that you did There would be no difference in the velocity of the light as seen by you and the velocity of the light as seen by the patrolman you would both measure the speed of light to be a constant 186000 miles per second

Right about now some of you may be getting frustrated ldquoWait a minuterdquo you say ldquoYou just got done telling me that motion is relative but now yoursquore saying that light travels at the same speed even when observed from two completely different frames of reference What gives manrdquo What gives is that the second fundamental postulate made by Einstein in his Theory of Relativity is this light will always travel

through empty space at the same constant velocity regardless of the speed of the lightrsquos source This fact has been verified by many experi-ments performed over the past century-and-a-half And if you have a hard time believing the consistency of lightrsquos speed get a load of this the mathematics of Einsteinrsquos theory show that if an object with mass was to somehow obtain the speed of light (which according to relativ-ity could never happen) that object would appear to have no length and infinite mass In fact the Special Theory of Relativity reveals that not only motion but also length mass and even time itself are all relative when viewed from different frames of reference

Now therersquos much to be learned from Einsteinrsquos theories in the way of science but we can try to draw a few spiritual lessons from his findings as well For example just as the motions of objects are relative to the frame of reference from which they are viewed we humans may some-times try to compare our sins to the sins of others Thoughts like ldquoI lie but at least I donrsquot stealrdquo or ldquoIrsquom not as bad as that personrdquo might give us the feeling that we are good enough that we are ldquorighteousrdquo on our own But just as the speed of light is unobtainable by any object with mass so we humans are unable to obtain the righteousness of God on account of our own goodness Romans 3 tells us in verse 10 ldquoThere is no one righteous not even onerdquo and later in verse 23 ldquoall have sinned and fall short of the glory of Godrdquo It doesnrsquot matter if from our own point of view we are ldquobetterrdquo than anyone else no one can measure up to a perfect God Thankfully Romans 3 continues in verse 24 by saying that we ldquoare justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesusrdquo and later in verse 25 ldquoHe did this to demonstrate His justicerdquo Often when we think of God as just we think of Him punishing the wicked or condemning sinners But according to Romans 3 Godrsquos free gift of salvation to those who believe in His Son His par-doning of sinners is in itself a demonstration of justice I think thatrsquos kind of crazy if you think about it

To sum it all up Einstein was a genius his Special Theory of Relativity is funky and it drastically changed the world of science God is just His gift of salvation is simple and it can radically change human lives Make the connection then make the difference
