The last Gold Sovereigns of Edward VII…

Sought after for their

beauty, scarcity and

long-term value – like

all sovereigns – the

Australian Sovereigns

of 1910 have one very

specific attraction for

the collector. Struck

100 years ago at the

Melbourne, Perth

and Sydney Mints

respectively, these

historic sovereigns

were the very last

issued during the reign

of King Edward VII.

Hotly pursued for their

‘last issue’ status, the

1910M, 1910P and

1910S sovereigns form

a pointed illustration of

the general scarcity of

Edward VII sovereigns.

The brief nature of the

king’s reign, combined

with the fact that pre-

WWI sovereigns were

the last gold coins used

in circulation, means

that a vast majority

of coins from the low

mintages are either

well worn or lost to

history. With the natural

scarcity exacerbated

by the number melted

down during the recent

surge in gold prices,

the 1910 sovereigns

are genuinely tough-to-

find – especially in good

quality.

An irresistible

proposition in superior

grade, we have all three

22-carat gold coins in

good Very Fine to good

Extremely Fine

– but you will have

to be quick. Despite

spending over a

year in pursuit of the

1910 Sovereign trio

in premium grade, we

have just fourteen

complete sets in

stock. Not available

individually, as

a result of the

scarcity of the

date, we must

Capturing the highly individual

characteristics of Britain’s classic gold coins, the Royal Mint has used original 19th century dies in the creation of the 2010 Gold Sovereign Series! An inspired initiative, the use of these dies was the key to demand for the 2009 series, and the 2010 series will be just as hotly pursued.

Struck using 1820s dies almost certainly worked on by Pistrucci himself, the 22.05mm 7.98g Sovereign is notable for the presence of the designer’s initials, as well as the absence of the streamer on St George’s helmet. In contrast, the 19.30mm 3.99g 2009 Half Sovereign (produced from 1893 dies, when the St George

A lasting memorial…

Superb when struck to flawless Proof standards, the RAM’s unique

Portraying the expedition’s departure and sole survivor respectively, the 20c and the $1 are

thousands on the rare occasions this type is offered. The perfect partner to any of the official Perth Mint and Royal Australian Mint commemoratives, this faithful 1861 Burke & Wills Medal Replica is sensational value-for-money at less than A$20. Accompanied by an informative card.

Just 40,000 sets issued!A fitting tribute to the 150th anniversary of the incredible achievements and great determination of the ill-fated 1860 Burke & Wills Expedition, the 2010 2-Coin Unc Set has naturally caught the eye of collector and non-collector alike.

With the names ‘Burke & Wills’

as famous as Ned Kelly, Banjo Paterson

or Donald Bradman, it is no surprise that this set has attracted interest across a vast cross-section of the community. Whilst a fine tribute to one of Australia’s most celebrated historical events, however, this set is far more important to decimal collectors. The only way you can obtain the Burke & Wills 20c and $1 in BU, with neither issued for circulation and neither in the 2010 Mint Set, this

Burke & Wills – enshrined in pure .999 silver

The key 150th anniversary tribute…

Using the glory of state-of-the-art full-colour minting to celebrate one of Australia’s most important historical events, the Perth Mint has created a magnificent tribute to the 150th anniversary of the Burke & Wills Expedition.

Sure to appeal to those seeking an affordable precious metal keepsake of a key moment in Australian history, the

quality, beauty and expert application of full-colour

will guarantee a rapturous response

from all modern coin collectors. Capturing Burke and Wills’ sense

of desperation in the latter stages of the

ill-fated journey, the broad 40.60mm flan of this Australian legal tender coin portrays

the bedraggled, exhausted

explorers in

detailed high-relief silver Proof quality. The perfect complement, the full-colour background motif conveys the harsh environment they encountered in their brave, fatally flawed attempt to cross the continent. An official Australian legal tender issue, graced with the Rank-Broadley portrait of Elizabeth II, the 2010 $1 Burke & Wills 150th Anniversary 1oz Silver Proof is also a most memorable presentation. Capped with a she-oak lid, the superb, official Perth Mint case forms the perfect environment for a truly exquisite .999 fine silver Proof.

Completing the presentation, an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each coin, attesting to the tiny worldwide mintage of just 7,500. With the tale of Burke & Wills continuing to capture the public imagination a century and a half after their tragic demise, this sparkling new commemorative is sure to be one of the most sought after coins of the year.

■ Exclusive! Worldwide mintage just 7,500 coins!

■ Crafted to Proof quality from 1oz of .999 fine silver

■ Official Australian legal tender – measures 40.60mm

■ Housed in a superb, official case, complete with timber lid

BURKE & WILLS – A TALE OF TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDYEstablished to travel from Melbourne in the south to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north, the ‘Victorian Exploring Expedition’, as it was known, set off in 1860 in search of knowledge, wealth and inhabitable land for the fledgling colony of Victoria.

Financed, in part, by the Royal Society of Victoria, who will play a leading role in the 150th anniversary celebrations, the Victorian Exploring Expedition left

Royal Park in Melbourne on 20 August 1860, watched by approximately 15,000 people. They took 23 horses, six wagons, 26 camels and enough food to last two years. Ultimately, the slow progress and personality clashes within the party saw Burke forge ahead with an advance party in late 1860, establishing a camp at Cooper’s Creek. With John King and Charles Gray, Burke and Wills then made a dash for the Gulf,

and successfully traversed the 1,200km, only to be denied reaching the sea by impenetrable mangrove swamps.

Exhausted and short on supplies, the group headed south, with Gray dying before they arrived back at Cooper’s Creek, some five weeks overdue. They were dismayed to find that the base party had left the creek earlier on that same day.

Too fatigued to follow immediately, they set out two days later in an attempt to reach a cattle station at Mt Hopeless, but unable to carry enough water, soon gave up. Staying on at Cooper’s Creek, the men grew ever weaker, and Burke and Wills died toward the end of June 1861. John King, surviving due to the assistance from the local indigenous population, was found alive some three months later.

Although their mission ended in tragedy, Burke & Wills were the first European settlers to cross the Continent from south to north, and the expedition has become synonymous with the pioneering spirit upon which the Australian nation has been built. A major national event, the 150th anniversary celebrations of Burke & Wills’ historic journey into the unknown are sure to take centre stage in 2010.

Rare, genuine Mule Error! One of the great decimal rarities, the RAM’s 2000 $1/10c Mule Error is excessively rare – regardless of the grade. A breathtaking opportunity, we have three examples of this hotly pursued error coin in Extremely Fine! Never before offered by Downies in this grade, this unique type is seldom seen on the market in such nice condition.

A very rare event, a Mule is created when incorrect obverse and reverse dies are mistakenly matched. Modern production methods would seem to preclude the possibility of Mules, but in admitting it had

struck $1 coins with a 10c obverse, the RAM officially acknowledged the creation of a major decimal rarity – provoking thoughts of the great predecimal rarity, the 1916 Halfpenny Mule, worth A$250,000 in EF.

Although the specific number struck with this incorrect die combination is unknown, the McDonald’s Guide notes the figure to be approximately 400. With the type discovered 2 years after issue, a vast majority of 2000 $1/10c Mule coins have been well circulated, with a

tiny pool of examples remaining in superior grade, as here. With the chances of finding this coin in change in ANY grade virtually nil, don’t miss the opportunity to own a genuine – and genuinely rare – RAM Mule Error

in EF. United with a standard 2000 $1 for comparison, this rare type will be snapped up instantly.

EXTREMELY RARE IN EF AS HERE…

‘Never before offered by Downies in this superb condition…’

A$3,500US$2,975

2000 $1/10c MULE ERROR EF

Easily distinguished as an error, the smaller 10c die has produced a distinct collar around

the 25mm planchet of the obverse, as well as a much smaller portrait

Described in the McDonald’s catalogue as rare, the 1991 5c Large SD Variety is still remarkably affordable in sparkling Brilliant Uncirculated as here. Identified by the larger initials of designer, Stuart Devlin, below the echidna, this

distinctive type is a must-have for decimal Variety collectors at just A$29. Complete with the Small SD 5c type for comparison, we have just a few premium grade BU examples in stock.

Similar to the 2004 20c and 50c Large Portrait types, the 2001 5c Large Portrait Variety is scarce, distinctive and highly sought after. Struck from one of two distinct obverse dies used in production of the 5c in 2001, the type is notable for the bigger portrait

of the Queen, as well as the fact that the initials of the designer are spaced rather than joined. Offered in BU, along with a Small Portrait 5c for comparison.

Struck at the Royal Canadian Mint during the 1981 RAM strike, like the highly sought after 1981 20c 3 & 1/2 Claws Variety, the 1981 5c ‘Wavy Hair’ Variety is a highly distinctive, extremely scarce type. Distinguished by a much more bouffant look to the curls at the back of Queen Elizabeth’s

neck, the existence of this unusual type was not widely known at the time of issue, with few stashed away. Complete with a standard 1981 5c for comparison, the Wavy Hair 5c is very tough-to-find in BU – as here.

THE FIRST… THE RAREST… THE ONLY ONE THE LAST…It has a lot of rivals for the title, but we believe that the 1927 Canberra Florin is the most beautifully designed coin in the history of Australian numismatics. It is unarguably one of the most popular. Australia’s first commemorative, issued in 1927 to honour the opening of the new Parliament House, this distinctive, one-year-only sterling silver type is remarkably affordable in Fine to VF. Set in a full-colour pack.

Issued to mark the centenaries of the founding of Victoria and settlement of Melbourne, the one-year-only 1934/35 Centenary Florin is rare in any grade. Just 54,000 coins were issued! Thus one of the lowest mintage coins across the entire predecimal series, and highly sought after as one of the great predecimal rarities, this unique type is available in Very Fine condition – housed in a full-colour pack.

Unique, as the sole commemorative florin issued during the reign of King George VI, the 1951 Federation Florin was issued in honour of the 50th anniversary of Australian nationhood. Defined by a very low mintage of just two million, and yet still very affordable in lovely EF condition as here, this important type is a compulsory element of every Australian collection. Presented within a full-colour pack.

The first commemorative for Elizabeth II also turned out to be the last of the 1910-64 predecimal series. Celebrating the first tour by a reigning British monarch, this unique type (mintage 2m) forms a symbolic reminder of the powerful bond between Australia and the Mother Country. Struck at the historic Melbourne Mint, as with every coin on this page, we have this key type in EF – set in a full-colour pack.

COMPLETE 1927-54 COMMEMORATIVE FLORIN COLLECTION A$525 US$447

The only two dates of Australia’s largest

issued coin type – measuring 38.5mm and comprising nearly 1oz sterling silver – the 1937 and 1938 Crowns are

a must-have for every predecimal

collection. The nation’s highest predecimal coin denomination, at Five Shillings, this dynamic duo is also well known for the tiny mintages.

The only issued 1937-dated coin, struck for the George VI coronation, the 1937 Crown had a mintage of just one million. It’s successor, the 1938 Crown, is one of the lowest-mintage issues of the entire series, with production halted at just

101,600 coins due to the Crown’s unpopularity as a circulation coin. Imposing, distinctive and scarce – with so many melted for the silver value – we have a small number of VF 1937 Crowns and F-VF 1938 Crowns in stock.
