Struck using 1820s dies almost certainly worked on by Pistrucci himself, the 22.05mm 7.98g Sovereign is notable for the presence of the designer’s initials, as well as the absence of the streamer on St George’s helmet. In contrast, the 19.30mm 3.99g 2009 Half Sovereign (produced from 1893 dies, when the St George

design was first seen on the denomination) features the streamer but lacks Pistrucci’s initials! BURKE & WILLS – A TALE OF TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDYEstablished to travel from Melbourne in the south to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north, the ‘Victorian Exploring Expedition’, as it was known, set off in 1860 in search of knowledge, wealth and inhabitable land for the fledgling colony of Victoria.

Financed, in part, by the Royal Society of Victoria, who will play a leading role in the 150th anniversary celebrations, the Victorian Exploring Expedition left

Royal Park in Melbourne on 20 August 1860, watched by approximately 15,000 people. They took 23 horses, six wagons, 26 camels and enough food to last two years. Ultimately, the slow progress and personality clashes within the party saw Burke forge ahead with an advance party in late 1860, establishing a camp at Cooper’s Creek. With John King and Charles Gray, Burke and Wills then made a dash for the Gulf,

and successfully traversed the 1,200km, only to be denied reaching the sea by impenetrable mangrove swamps.

Exhausted and short on supplies, the group headed south, with Gray dying before they arrived back at Cooper’s Creek, some five weeks overdue. They were dismayed to find that the base party had left the creek earlier on that same day.

Too fatigued to follow immediately, they set out two days later in an attempt to reach a cattle station at Mt Hopeless, but unable to carry enough water, soon gave up. Staying on at Cooper’s Creek, the men grew ever weaker, and Burke and Wills died toward the end of June 1861. John King, surviving due to the assistance from the local indigenous population, was found alive some three months later.

Although their mission ended in tragedy, Burke & Wills were the first European settlers to cross the Continent from south to north, and the expedition has become synonymous with the pioneering spirit upon which the Australian nation has been built. A major national event, the 150th anniversary celebrations of Burke & Wills’ historic journey into the unknown are sure to take centre stage in 2010.

A very rare event, a Mule is created when incorrect obverse and reverse dies are mistakenly matched. Modern production methods would seem to preclude the possibility of Mules, but in admitting it had

struck $1 coins with a 10c obverse, the RAM officially acknowledged the creation of a major decimal rarity – provoking thoughts of the great predecimal rarity, the 1916 Halfpenny Mule, worth A$250,000 in EF.

Although the specific number struck with this incorrect die combination is unknown, the McDonald’s Guide notes the figure to be approximately 400. With the type discovered 2 years after issue, a vast majority of 2000 $1/10c Mule coins have been well circulated, with a

Described in the McDonald’s catalogue as rare, the 1991 5c Large SD Variety is still remarkably affordable in sparkling Brilliant Uncirculated as here. Identified by the larger initials of designer, Stuart Devlin, below the echidna, this

distinctive type is a must-have for decimal Variety collectors at just A$29. Complete with the Small SD 5c type for comparison, we have just a few premium grade BU examples in stock.

Similar to the 2004 20c and 50c Large Portrait types, the 2001 5c Large Portrait Variety is scarce, distinctive and highly sought after. Struck from one of two distinct obverse dies used in production of the 5c in 2001, the type is notable for the bigger portrait

of the Queen, as well as the fact that the initials of the designer are spaced rather than joined. Offered in BU, along with a Small Portrait 5c for comparison.

Struck at the Royal Canadian Mint during the 1981 RAM strike, like the highly sought after 1981 20c 3 & 1/2 Claws Variety, the 1981 5c ‘Wavy Hair’ Variety is a highly distinctive, extremely scarce type. Distinguished by a much more bouffant look to the curls at the back of Queen Elizabeth’s

neck, the existence of this unusual type was not widely known at the time of issue, with few stashed away. Complete with a standard 1981 5c for comparison, the Wavy Hair 5c is very tough-to-find in BU – as here.

Issued to mark the centenaries of the founding of Victoria and settlement of Melbourne, the one-year-only 1934/35 Centenary Florin is rare in any grade. Just 54,000 coins were issued!
