“vida e caffè” is Portuguese for “life and coffee”. The concept was born out of the heritage of a truly European espresso bar, a reaction to the insipid coffee shop culture that is prevalent in our daily lives. vida e caffè is a simple, focused concept that delivers an authentically European experience in espresso and coffee drinking. The simplicity of the interior, the focused menu, and the nature of the service, have all been designed with European street culture as the foundation. The vida e caffè espresso bars aim to deliver the highest quality coffee and pastries, prepared to European standards. Our menu is based on the fare typical of a street café in Ltisboa, a slice of Europe on African streets. Check out the many Vida E Caffes throughout Cape Town, not least in Union Kloof.

Cape Town’s original inhabitants were known as the Quena, and forcenturies, possibly millennia, their life in the shadow of Table Mountaindepended on access to a river network that flowed from its lowerslopes. They called this area “Camissa” or “Place of Sweet Waters”. The area is just a small part of where many Camissa fountains from Cape Town burst into the open - providing clean water. Hence the name ‘Little Camissa’. When employees of the Dutch East India Company arrived in the 17th Century they also recognized Table Mountain’s northern slopes as a fertile frontier. After slowly forcing the locals off their land South Africa’s first private farms were cleaved into the soil, nestled among the many streams that flowed from the towering moun-tain. The first free citizens of the Dutch company, the Freeburghers, and teams of slaves worked the land to supply the flourishing port city of Cape Town and its passing trade with food. These days Little Camissa is a rich vein of cuisine, art and decor feeding a vintage leafy suburb where gardens surround stately homes. littlecamissa-capetown.co.za

Top coffeeLegendary Little Camissa deli Melissa’s on Kloof Street has extra-wide windows, which makes people-watching a breeze. It’s a favourite for taking up residence with a paper and a cafe au lait for a few hours. Spend some time browsing in the deli, or get your hands on the Sunday Times while it’s hot. 94 Kloof Street, Little Camissa, 021 424 5540@melissas_za

Killer cocktailThe Lynchburg Lemonade at Bombay Bicycle Club without a doubt. The restaurant has an ample selection of fezs, fedoras and turbans to wear as you sip on this bourbon-based nectar. Smooth and easy on the palate. Ask for extra cherries. If whiskey ain’t your thing, try the California Iced Tea – all the punch with half the calories. 158 Kloof Street, Little Camissa, 021 423 6805

Smallest milkshakeWell, it’s not strictly a melkskommel, but relative newcomer Caffé Milano’s Cremespresso is nothing short of genius. It’s like an iced cof-fee mixed with an espresso mixed with bliss! Served in a dainty little glass, it is pure pint-sized indulgence, and the perfect antidote for a late afternoon sweet craving. 153 Kloof Street, Little Camissa, 021 426 5566

Coolest designSimple, it’s LIM (Less Is More). A pared down furniture store packed with character and intent. It’s a refuge of cool in the bustle of Kloof Street. As cleansing as a stroll in a Scandinavian forest. 86 Kloof Street, Little Camissa, 021 423 1200

Tallest story Nooitgedacht, Oranjezicht, Leeuwenhof and Waterhof estates all lay claim to a similar legend of a slave nurse hiding a baby in a Dutch oven to avoid being murdered by rebellious slaves. Apparently the pattering feet of the ghosts of slaves can still be heard in the hallways of the mansions.

Best peopleThe Three Peaks Challenge involves running from the city centre up each of Cape Town’s three peaks – Devil’s Peak, Platteklip Gorge to Maclear’s Beacon and Lion’s Head – and returning to the start at Greenmarket Square after each one. Finishing this event is an accom-plishment for most but not for Brian Key, who, in 2012, completed his 12th challenge, aged 74.

In walking distanceLittle Camissa is surrounded by green spaces. If you’re needing a stroll check out De Waal Park. Dogs, kids and laid-back attitudes welcome.Polish up your backhand at the Gardens Lawn Tennis Club. The club has an honesty box policy, so make sure you take cash with you, as well as tennis balls and rackets. With breathtaking views of the mountain at sunset the Molteno Reservoir is a stunning location for a fast walk… sometimes called a run.

In Cape Town’s early days Union Kloof was expanding farmland, catering for the growing settlement along the shoreline below. Fieldsmade way for housing, and wagon trails turned to cobbled streets.Remnants of early architecture can still be seen in quiet back streets, with some low, double-storied Dutch buildings to be found. The more recent Edwardian and Victorian influence is also on show with elabo-rate “broekies lace” verandahs fronting the Kloof Street in places.By day this is a bustling creative retail zone, a pedestrian wonder.Original boutiques, salons, fashion stores, interior design studios, spas and cinemas combine with hotels, coffee shops and restaurantsto offer a delightful mix of shopping. Trendy bars and restaurants takeover in the evening. Union Kloof welcomes those who prefer a morerefined nightlife to the raucous upper end of Long Street nearby.

Coolest cutRun by sisters Karen and Andrette, Mooi Hair & Beauty Salon is a vanilla-scented beauty haven. Haircuts at Mooi are accompanied by good, real coffee or vino, and a cute little cupcake. A constant stream of regulars means you need to book your ’do or pedicure in advance, but it’s well worth the wait. 14 Kloof Nek Road, Union Kloof, 021 423 6553

Top coffeeCape Town is in the grip of a coffee revolution. The Cape coffee manifesto was practically written at Vida e Caffè on Kloof Street – the vibrant first store for what has become a national franchise sensation. It’s still loud and proud and busy all day long. Obrigado. 34 Kloof Street, Union Kloof, 021 426 0627, @vidaecaffe

Whether dining on exotic Cape cuisine, soaking up the sun on any of the stunning beaches nearby or getting ready to stroll down fashion-able Kloof Street, guests have the ideal central base from which to discover this exhilarating city.

In 1806, the house that was to become the Mount Nelson Hotel was let to an auctioneer, William Maude. It was named the Mount Nelson in honour of Admiral Lord Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and because of its proximity to Table Mountain. The Mount Nelson Hotel opened on 6 March 1899. The first hotel in South Africa to offer hot and cold running water, it was applauded for being “even better than its London counterparts”. 76 Orange Street, Union Kloof, 021 483 [email protected]

Oldest barkA sacred elder wild fig tree (ficus carica) known as Unabantu Noku-phila or The Ubuntu Tree. The Ubuntu Tree rests behind the Cape Town Medi-Spa/Ubuntu Wellness on Kloof Street, on the banks of what was for millennia the Camissa-fed Weltevreden Dam. It is said to be over 400 years old and is still an ancient guiding spirit for many in the city and beyond.

A neighbourhood throbbing to the beat of the city’s retail entrepreneurs and independent designers, The Loop is an eclectic mix of old Dutch, Georgian, Edwardian and more modern architecture. Its heart is the magnetic Heritage Square on Bree Street, arguably Cape Town’s first shopping centre. Tobacconists, snuff makers, gunsmiths, bakers, coach makers, wheelwrights and even an undertaker all served the bustling city in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The traders of yesteryear have disappeared yet many of their vintage storefronts remain and in their expertly restored buildings epicurean wonders abound, serving boutique beers and unforgettable evenings to locals and tourists alike. “The boundary streets of this Hood form a loop and Bree Street was made wider to allow wagons to make U-turns or ‘loop’ around. ‘Loop’ is the Afrikaans word for walk and this hood is made for walking.” theloop-capetown.co.za

Oldest vineThe Cape Heritage Hotel, in today’s Heritage Square, is built around a courtyard safely protecting the oldest fruit-bearing vine in the Southern Hemisphere, believed to have been planted in the 1770s. 90 Bree Street, The Loop, 021 424 4646

Bo-Kaap is known as the Cape Malay Quarter; a multicultural treasure steeped in history and tucked into the fold of signal hill. It is a lively suburb filled with brightly coloured houses, fabulous tastes and char-acters, Muslim Saints’ shrines, and many beautiful Mosques including the first established Muslim Mosque in South Africa. The residents of Bo-Kaap are mostly descended from slaves who were imported to the Cape by the Dutch during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They reigned from different parts of Africa, Indonesia, Java Malaysia, and elsewhere in Asia. They were known as “Cape Malays”, which is an incorrect term as most of Bo-Kaap’s residents are not entirely of Malaysian descent. The Bo-Kaap (meaning ‘Upper Cape Town’) remains a traditional, devout Muslim society to this day. bokaap-capetown.co.za

Trendy, stylish and unashamedly hip, De Waterkant is a unique European influenced village of semi-detached quaint cottages from a mix of Dutch, Georgian and Asian architecture, and cobbled streets preserved from the 1760s. Cradled between the city and the V&A Waterfront, De Waterkant is avant-garde, a cultural urban refuge highlighted by the abundance of restaurants, art galleries, gay clubs, salsa clubs, and Parisian inspired café’s. De Waterkant got its name 300 years ago; each day, as the high tide rose, the waves would lap the sides of the hill upon which the area stands. It was, quite accurately, on the waterside. Until the Group Areas Act was enforced in 1966, children, irrespective of race, religion and cultural background, would play badminton and cricket in the streets while the entire Neighbour-hood watched and cheered them on. De Waterkant remains the friendly, welcoming village of yesteryear, where the resounding Noon Gun can clearly be heard and residents are woken by the early morning sounds of ships in the harbour.dewaterkant-capetown.co.za

Cape Town HoodsCape Town Hoods is the product of the Name Your Hood (NYH) cam-paign to unearth creative and functional neighbourhood names in South Africa’s urban centres. It’s about igniting community spirit and creativity to produce user-friendly cities through an inclusive, interac-tive, & democratic process. As our cities overcome historic design challenges and develop more organically, the need to create deline-ated, strongly-branded neighbourhoods is clear. Many city precincts in South Africa are nameless and house disenfranchised communities. Where New York has SoHo and TriBeCa, and London has Mayfair and Chelsea, Cape Town simply has ‘town’ or the ‘City Bowl’, both vague homogenous designations for an area alive with unique and vibrant neighbourhoods. The NYH campaign has enabled Cape Town citizens to create 7 new hood names, 3 of which are featured in this guide. These Cape Town Hoods have their own unique characters which can be explored on their websites. Learn about where the names came from and discover fascinating stories of the history, culture, geography, and happenings around these Hoods. The NYH campaign is naming Hoods in Gugulethu and has plans to enter other Cape Town suburbs, as well as Johannesburg and Durban.
