Advertising in Pieces of Eight

We used to have the magazine printed for a very reasonable cost at a local school, howeverthis facility is no longer available to us. Commercial printing is too expensive to support fromadvertising revenue alone and we have taken the decision to print 'in-house' using asecondhand laser printer, and to print in black and white from December's issue onwards.

Toner is a major part of the print cost and to keep this cost under control we are also askingour advertisers to reduce the amount of block background in their advertisements. Picturesand logos are fine, but we would much prefer a white or low saturation grey background.

We believe this is the best and fairest way to retain a community magazine that is free for allresidents with a simple and easily administered advertising price structure.

We would therefore be grateful if future advertisers & contributors could let us have black andwhite advertisement copy and pictures/illustrations for articles.

Many thanks, and thanks again for your continued support for Pieces of Eight.

The Editors

We have held advertising rates unchanged for several years now but due to rising print costs (evenwith our own laser printer) we have reluctantly decided to increase our rates from 1st January 2017.The new rates are shown below.

Advertising remittances (cash, or cheque made payable to St Kew Parish Magazine), should be sentby the publication deadline to Judy Gray. Please do not put money or cheques in the Spar post box.

Editorial

We wish all our readers, advertisers anddistributors a happy Christmas and a

peaceful & prosperous New YearThe year seems to have flown by as usual. Summeris already a distant memory, and it is time forcomforting food, bracing walks and relaxingevenings by a warm fire before the build-up to thefestive season. Perhaps more than any other timeof year Christmas is a time for thinking about thoseless fortunate than ourselves. Often it is the smallestthings that count for most - sparing some time tohelp an elderly or infirm neighbour, donating to thelocal Foodbank or homeless shelter, or simplyputting spare change in a charity collection box forexample. Whatever you can do, it will help someone, somewhere.

And so to the magazine - next year we would love toinclude more short (up to 500 words or so) articlesabout local events, or indeed about any subject thatwould be of interest to our readers. If you would liketo write for us - regular features or one off articles -please let us know at [email protected]

We have used our new printer this month, or at leastwe're planning to when I wrote this at the beginningof November, so fingers crossed!

Finally, thank you to everyone for all yourcontributions throughout the year and a huge thankyou to our advertisers for their support, andespecially to our distributors who deliver themagazine to you all come rain or shine. That's it,time for a break before we start on the Februaryissue.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

St. James the Great Mass Dial

Recently, a visitor to the church told us that she waspleased to see evidence of a ‘Mass Dial’ by thePriest’s Door. On the external archway of thepriest’s door on the south east of the building is ahole denoting the site of where a Mass Dial used tobe. This form of sundial was used between 900 and1600 AD to mark the variable times of the liturgicalservices decided by the priest.

The Mass Dial consisted of a short wooden peg orgnomon projecting at a right angle from a hole in the

south wall of the church to castthe sun’s shadow and a seriesof scratched or carved linesradiating from the centre point, which the shadow traversed. At St James, time has erasedthe carved lines but the holeremains. The picture showshow the Mass Dial might havelooked.

The Souper Lunch at the Community Hall on 21October was well attended and we welcomed acouple of newcomers. Lay Prebendary David Fostersaid the grace before the meal. Cherrel Raybouldagain exceeded herself by contributing a Potato andLeek soup and apple crumble, and Leonie Soleymade her usual delicious Tomato and Lentil soup andPam Hall provided a wonderful vegetable soup – allgood healthy stuff. The Souper Lunchers decided thatthis month's charitable giving of £67.30 should go tothe Haiti Hurricane Matthew Appeal organised by theRed Cross.

The Christmas Souper Lunch will be on Friday 16December. Everyone is always welcome to join us,however if you are not a regular Souper Luncher andwould like to join us for the Christmas lunch pleaselet William Garland know (for planning purposes) on01208 881134 or [email protected].

St Kew Highway Surgery

People who use the St Kew Highway surgery mayhave noticed that it is now closed on Thursdays.

The Parish Council, concerned about thisdevelopment, wrote to the Practice to ask for thereasons for this move. They received a reply from thePort Issac Practice that this is due to cuts in funding, and that the Practice was not obliged to obtainpermission to reduce services there, or give any priornotification other than a notice posted in the surgery. They went on to say that they could not guaranteethere would not be further reductions in the servicethey provide in future.

Local residents of St Kew Highway and thesurrounding area rely on our surgery and many will

find it difficult to travel to Port Isaac or Wadebridge(where there is no parking) to access a doctor orcollect prescriptions.

The Parish Council has notified the local MP of thedevelopments and I urge people to write to thePractice to express their views about the reduction insurgery availability.

AMBLE 'SHOCKER'

Did you know that Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)happens away from hospital premises around100,000 times a year in the UK. In the event of anSCA medical assistance must be given within 4 to5 minutes. In remote areas, like Chapel Amble, itcan take 8 minutes or more for medical assistanceto arrive (or longer if sheep are on the move!)

With this in mind the team running the MaltstersArms Quiz decided that their 2015 fund raisingshould go towards providing a Defibrillator for thevillage. After investigation the service offered byThe Community Heartbeat Trust (CHT) was identi-fied as being most appropriate. The CHT is anational charity which works closely with BT inutilising disused phone boxes as locations for defi-brillators. Having obtained approval from the ParishCouncil, who own the phone box, the defibrillatorwas installed in October and is now in working order.

The Maltsters Quiz Night, whichhas been running successfully onWednesday evenings for manyyears, has donated in excess of£10,000 to local groups over thepast 5 years, including £2,000raised to pay for the defibrillator.

This incorporated thetrue account by Mary Toft of “The Woman whogave Birth to Rabbits”, a tale that baffled learnedscientific men by its notorious trickery in order togain financially. All these interesting facts werediscovered by Mr Holden in Southampton recordsarchive. The evening was fascinating.

Endelienta Concerts

On Friday & Saturday, October 21st & 22nd thenovelist, Patrick Gale, introduced these curtain-raisers to this year’s North Cornwall Book Festival,as St. Endellion Church played host to two groupsof amazing musicians.

Amadou Diagne & Group Yakar, 21st

OctoberAmadou Diagne from Senegal, West Africa is aremarkably gifted multi-instrumentalist (guitar, percussion & kora - the traditional African 21-stringed lute) and singer. With his band, he createdan evening of unique fusion of Afrobeat, modernjazz and blues, enthralling a packed audience withtheir superb musicianship. To hear the kora and oud(the ancient Persian lute) played so beautifullytogether was also a rare treat.

The Bristol-based Group Yakar consisted of theirrenowned musical director, Mark Smulian, onfretless bass (reminiscent of Jaco Pastorius at hisbest) and oud, Jim Blomfield on keyboards, DanPert on electric guitar, Paolo Adamo on drums, andGani Tamir on vocals.

By the second set, the captivating rhythmsencouraged dancing in the aisles, and, after arapturous reception, the evening ended with anethereal encore, a kora and oud duet from Amadouand Smulian, crowning a truly memorableexperience.

Anyone interested in learning more about Amadouand his music, should go to his web-site,www. amadoudiagne.com.

Wild Willy Barrett's French Connection,22nd October

Wild Willy Barrett and his band French Connectionmade a welcome second visit to St Endellionshowcasing songs from their new album Avant-garde Mangetout alongside some of their traditionallive material.

The master of grunge folk (banjo, guitar, fiddle, vocals) and his collaborators - John Devine (uileannpipes, whistle, percussion, keyboard), Mary Holland(cello, keyboard) and Aurora Colson (vocals)performed an eclectic mix of songs in musical stylesranging from traditional Irish fiddle and pipesarrangements through jazzy folk and bluegrass toParisian songs reeking of pastis and Gauloises. Allof which was interspersed with wry wit (in bothsongs and on-stage banter) and surreal audienceparticipation - a full church enthusiatically joining ina one word chorus of 'Beaujolais' is not somethingyou hear very often.

Aside from Wild Willy's virtuoso fiddle, guitar andbanjo playing the standout performer was AuroraColson - a talented French singer for whom the word'chanteuse' fits perfectly. Aurora covered everythingfrom fast-paced Irish ditties to smoky Frenchchansons, like the self-penned 'Mon Amour', withstyle and verve, switching seamlessly from Frenchto English and back again.

It is fair to say that Wild Willy Barrett has travelled along way since his time with John Otway in the1970s (anyone remember the singles Really Freeand Beware of the Flowers?). He just gets betterand better.

A wonderful evening's entertainment. Will 2017make it 3 in a row? Lets hope so.

Commonwealth War GravesCommission and their signage

at churchesThe Commonwealth War Graves Commission(CWGC) was established by Royal Charter in 1917as the sole organisation charged with the care andcommemoration of those Commonwealth ArmedForces who died during the two World Wars. Theycurrently care for the graves and commemorationsof 1.7 million men and women worldwide and havewar graves at over 12,000 locations in the UK alone.

As part of the centenary of the First World War, theyare working on a project to erect Commission signsat as many sites that contain war graves as possi-ble. The aim of the initiative is to increase aware-ness of war graves in the United Kingdom and toremind the public that they need not travel abroad tofind Commonwealth commemorations. This couldalso result in encouraging a greater interest inchurchyards and church buildings in general and toincrease visitor numbers to them.

St James's the Great at St Kew

Our churchyard hasfour war graves: Fromthe First World War -Carpenters Crew JoeBray RN, located inthe lower churchyardbetween the main

south door and the west door of the bell tower; andPrivate Douglas Long,Training Reserves Battalion, located in a direct line approximately 15 metres fromthe main south door and the edge of the lowerchurchyard.

From the SecondWorld War – Car-penter OrdinarySeaman JackBuscumb RN,

located in the upper churchyard on the right handside half way up; and Private Ernest Sidney Spillerof the 5th Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment, located very close to Jack Buscumb.

The Parish Church Council agreed that two Com-monwealth War Graves Commission signs shouldbe located at St James the Great: One on the gateby the church steps, and one on the gate at theentrance to the upper churchyard. The conditionswere agreed and verified by the Archdeacon. Thesigns were installed on 19 October 2016.

William Garland

In the fading winter light,foot-falls in the country laneand children’s voices calling, calling, across the open snow-fields.

I didn’t mean to come this way, lost on the road to Little Egypt. The old track’s whited-out beyond Treviscoe, when I meet a wood-gatherer and his children.

Two girls in pink coats, scarved and booted, the lad in green, all bobble-hatted,each wrapped up against the cold, intent upon the hearth’s demands.

The man is heaving a broken branch,bow-sawing, snapping, slowly bundlinglogs into a hessian sack, mawsheld open by his daughters.

The son ferrets the frozen groundbeneath the holly-bush and ivy, windfall sticks for fire-side kindling, helps to fill the rusty wheel-barrow.

No-one turns as I pass by.I leave no foot-prints in this snow.Across the fields a winter stillness, signs and land-marks all quite gone.

Looking back, the girls run on,wheeling beneath a leaden sky, laughing, calling to the years long-flown,as the boy helps his father home.

Tails from Ellisteel Boris

Several moons ago a pen palof mine wrote “Collie Gems”.This article has been missed bydogs and humans, and al-though I do not have the ex-traordinary talents of Nym, I will try to impart somedoggy tips and stories. So with respect to Nym I willstart with how to train your human - first lesson,Taking Medication:

Mistress decides (with the encouragement of the Vet,more about him later), that you ought to have sometablets. This isn’t bad, but you can use it to youradvantage. Firstly accept the tablet that they call asweetie (but it’s not). After a couple of days - spit itout and refuse to take it. They will then probablysprinkle it crushed or whatever onto your dinner. OKfor a couple of days, but then refuse to eat yourdinner. (I know this is very hard, but worth it in thelong run).

This really worries them and they try to tempt youand offer tablets in cheese, chicken, fish, sausage. As before accept for a couple of days and thenrefuse. Eventually they will discover what your favou-rite is. In my case Camembert and I get a very tastytreat every morning. I am happy, she is happy. Youmight prefer salami, ham or smoked salmon. What-ever it is they will eventually clock on and you will geta real treat every time.

Happy sniffing and tail wagging!

Boris

Roly’s PurringsIf Boris can do it I thought, howabout a cat correspondent forPo8? I'm Roly, in my 'goldenyears' according to Zoe myadorable vet nurse who lovescutting my nails. Well, humans have manicuresand pedicures so why not cats? Zoe could beright, I'm heading for 19 years young. The childrenin my family (all over 25) still call me a kitten, verytactful I'm sure, but who are they kidding? I'mblack with one white foot but do seem to be goingrather grey around the whiskers the older I get.Still, no bald patches yet though. My owners bought this lovely house over 3 yearsago. Oh why couldn't they have done that when Iwas younger and could have taken advantage ofall the local wildlife? Now I just sit or lay snoozingin my favourite armchair all day, preferably in thesun (see above!), and when it's cold the underfloorheating is blissful! Then the dreaded day came when I was classedas too old to be left alone all day as I neededfrequent meals. Not only that but I also convincedthem that I was too old and infirm for Boardingwhen they went away. Rats - little did I know thattheir solution to this was to take me on longjourneys in a cramped cat basket every time theygo to visit the family. After several 'noisy' trips theyhave finally worked out how to keep me quiet -suffice to say it involves rather tasty baconbutties...... I will tell you all about my travels nexttime. Toodle Pip!

All of the childrenrepresented St Kew School superbly at theWadebridge Key Stage 1 event and enjoyed somegreat results with two boys finishing third in theirraces. Perhaps some Usain Bolts of the future in themaking? Our Girls Can (don’t you know)Our Year 5 and 6 girls spent the day at the RoyalCornwall Showground for a fun filled day of sports. They were treated to a visit from special guest -Olympic athlete Heather Fell who won a silver medalat the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The childrenparticipated in a range of activities from yoga tocycling. It was a fantastic day out!

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…..”

Well where did Autumn go. It seems just yesterdaythat we were singing Harvest hymns and givingthanks for what was a pretty good harvest. NowChristmas will soon be upon us and another yearwill have passed by, but the days leading up to the25th December are a special time. Lists to write, presents to buy, plans to be made, cakes to bakeand puddings to stir, bright lights in the shops andcarolling in frosty air. I love it all but I know that itwon’t be so joyous for some. It is a very hard timefor those who are alone especially so if they havebeen recently bereaved, and there are those whowill struggle through the days of Christmas to keepbody and soul together just as they do throughoutthe year.

So when you are thinking of your present list thisChristmas do think of those for whom the smallestkindness will be a gift beyond compare:

The neighbour who is all alone and will be sodelighted with a visit. Those who cannot afford tobuy even the smallest luxury who will treasure a giftthat says they are not forgotten, and those in ourcommunity who cannot find a way to buy presentsfor their own children. Christmas should be a timewhen society comes together but it is often the veryopposite. It can become so easily a time when weare so involved and obsessed with our own worldthat we fail see beyond our immediate circle.

The days leading up to Christmas are known asAdvent. It is the start of the church’s year becauseas Christians we look towards the birth of Jesus. Itis a time when we remember and rejoice that theSon of God came to earth for us. Surely the greatestgift of all and as we delight in all that means shouldwe not rejoice in what we can give to others?

We will remember them....This month we remember those on the War Memorialwho died during the month of December: Edgar Smith(1914), John Herbert Vereker (1940) and his brotherPatrick Brian Vereker (1941).  We include in our thoughtsLeslie Thyer a former parishioner, who also died duringWorld War II.

Edgar SmithPrivate Edgar Smith of the 4th Battalion of the Duke ofCornwall’s Light Infantry (DCLI) was aged 20 when hewas killed on 21st December 1914 in India.   He was theson of Charles and Janie Smith of St Kew Highway.Edgar was a farm labourer before enlisting and had a twinnamed Stanley who was a gardener; both were born atWadebridge, as was their mother. Edgar Smith was apre-War Territorial who had volunteered overseas in theevent of a national emergency and joined the 1st/4thBattalion DCLI (Territorial Force).   On 4th October 1914the Battalion, as a Reserve unit, embarked for Indiaarriving at Bombay on 10th November.    It is believed thatEdgar Smith must have been one of the first casualties ofthe conditions in India suffered by the 1st/4th Battalion. He is buried in the Lucknow Cantonment Cemetery, Face16, at the Madras 1914 -1918 War Memorial, Chennai,India.  The St Kew Parish Magazine reported in January1915: “The whole parish has been cast into gloom onhearing of the sad death of Edgar Smith who had recentlyjoined the Army and had proceeded to India. The sadnews was conveyed on Christmas Day to the brokenhearted parents, to whom the whole Parish andneighbourhood extend their sincere sympathy.”

John Herbert Radcliffe Medlicott VerekerRoyal Navy Lieutenant JHRM Vereker was born 3rdOctober 1914 and was killed in action 21st December1940, aged 26.  He was serving with 819 Squadron FleetAir Arm on the aircraft-carrier HMS Illustrious at the timehe was reported missing, his Swordfish aircraft havingbeen shot down attacking an Italian convoy off the coastof Tunisia. His name appears on the Lee-on-the-SolentMemorial, Bay 1, Panel 2 (Marine Parade, Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire).

Patrick Brian VerekerRoyal Navy Midshipman PB Vereker was born 27thDecember 1923 and was aged 17 years when he wasreported missing on HMS Neptune on 19th December1941. His name appears on the Plymouth NavalMemorial, Panel 44, Column 3. He was brother to JohnHerbert Radcliffe Medlicott Vereker, named above. These two brothers, along with another brother DerekStandish Vereker (who was to die on 18th July 1944),were the sons of Lieutenant Colonel John CayserMedlicott Vereker MC, and Mrs Dulcie Flores MedlicottVereker (nee Radcliffe) of Trewane Manor, St Kew.

Leslie Marshall Robert ThyerChief Mechanic LMR Thyer, Royal Navy, died on 10thDecember 1941, aged 47, when his ship was sunk offKuatan, Malaya. He was the brother of Alfred Edward

George Thyer who died on 2nd May 1915 at sea on HMSLondon, and is mentioned on our War Memorial. LeslieThyer is not mentioned as he wasn't living here at thetime of his death, but had previously lived in the parishwith his family. Leslie is remembered on the family graveat their plot at Trelill. They were sons of George Henryand Sarah Anne Thyer of Pendoggett.

..................................

The Western FrontThe biting, raw winter of 1916-17 wastragically apt for the utter horrors on theSomme which had preceded it, and botharmies attempted a period of rest and

recuperation before fighting would, inevitably, begin inearnest once the big freeze had thawed.(Cornwall's Fallen by Nick Thorncroft)

British Army FoodAs the war continued reductions in rations were mademainly in the training and reserve camps, so preservingthe best diet for those on active service.   The daily scalesfor each soldier were highly detailed, from the key itemsof meat and bread (around a pound of each) through tothe three ounces of jam and tins of cheese, to the half-ounce of salt and one thirty-sixth ounce of pepper.

The supply of food was fraught with difficulty and at timesprovisioning broke down completely.   The static natureof the Western Front generally facilitated the delivery offood to the men through a complex system of trains, motor vehicles, horse-drawn limber and handcarts.  BaseSupply Depots (BSDs) were established on the Frenchcoast to store the quantities of food required to feed thehuge numbers of soldiers.   Bakeries were establishednear the BSDs at Boulogne.

Christmas dinner was anoccasion when thedisappointments of rationswere forgotten. Manyorganisations sent gifts tothe troops, and with parcelsfrom home, were a greatsource of support to themen.     It is recorded thatover 50,000 parcels a day

flooded across the channel in the period beforeChristmas 1917.

Our speaker evening on 16th November was givenby Danielle Stephens from the 'Bloom Room' inWadebridge on Christmas decorations. She madeup three superb decorations in oasis, one for tableand the other two for either table or to hang on thefront door. She is a very talented lady who madethe whole process look so very easy, but thatcomes from having the experience of doing it everyday. The designs were made from very simplematerials put together with real flair. Danielle alsodonated the three exhibits to our raffle so three

lucky people have taken away some earlyChristmas presents. It was well attended and apleasure to see some new faces in the audience. We do not have a meeting in December as it wouldfall on 21st and everyone is much too tied up withChristmas preparations by then.18th January will be our social evening and this willbe held in St Kew Community Hall from 7.30pm.All members are welcome to attend and each willbring a plate of food and whichever drink theywould like. We will have a really good get together. We wish everyone a happy, peaceful, joyousChristmas and a prosperous New Year.

We are sad that our concert for the local BlindBranch of the Cornwall 'i-sight Cornwall’, has beencancelled. The group has been disbanded as aleader and organiser cannot be found to run thisworthwhile organisation, and especially its oncemonthly social afternoon. We have entertainedthem in past years and our singing has beenenjoyed by these lovely people who rely on theirhearing to connect them with the world. We hopethat a Leader can be found soon and that next year, they can once again enjoy choirs and delightfulsinging.

On the 29th November, we will be singing atWyndhurst Orchard Retirement Home inWadebridge. We always enjoy this venue andmeeting up with old and new friends. One of theladies has a son and daughter-in-law, both of whomwe have seen as newly weds, then the parents of a

lovely little daughter and then a baby son. Onedoes wonder what we will find this year!

We look forward to the Christmas concerts at variedvenues and will report on them all in the nextpublication, which will be of course in the NewYear. Our only public concert is on December 17thwhen we sing in St. Merryn's Church at 7.30 pm.That will be all Chrismassy. All are welcome.

We meet on Tuesday evenings between 7.15-8.45pm at St. Kew Community Hall in St. Kew Highwayand always welcome a visit if you would like tomeet us and have a chat.
