One thousand and one faces, that’s Istanbul.

The gulls wake us up with their shrill, piercing squawks. This is a sound that we will come to hear a lot over the course of the day while the shadows from their wings glide over the floor below us, particularly along the shore. The view over to the water is like drawing one

last deep breath before diving into the pulsing, busy streets of the pearl of the Bosporus.

alleyways lined with shops, attracting half a million customers every day. Full of different aromas and colours, it is romantic, but with a sense of rawness too.

Günnur Özsoy is an artist. A sculptor to be precise. She hosted our team at her Istanbul apartment for the Volkswagen Collection photo shoot. Of course, her career has also had a huge influence on the style of her home. Her sculptures provide a unique, sophisticated look: round, flowing, smooth shapes that you just want to run your hands over. Feeling as good as they look, the sculptures have a warming effect, a soft and almost calming influence – in other words, simply beautiful.

Günnur Özsoy is always on the lookout for new ma-terials to use in her sculptures. “I love all materials,” she says. A quick glimpse through her exhibition catalogues and her love truly shines through. There are bronze, marble and aluminium pieces, along with sculptures in felt and polyester. She has even worked with liquid lead for some of her pieces. Günnur Özsoy holds regular exhibitions at galleries in Istanbul and Ankara, along with a number of other European cities.

100% violence-free. Shouldn’t that go without saying? Not necessarily. For the production of the silk for the scarf in our Think Blue. Collection, every single silk cocoon is cut open carefully by hand so that the butterfly can emerge from the cocoon before it is boiled – silk production normally involves the butterfly being cooked with the cocoon.

The “Think Blue.” scarf was designed in partnership with the clothing label “Cocccon”.

Sustainability and the environ ment play an important role throughout the entire production chain. The organic silk is manufactured under fair conditions in Jharkhand in eastern India and is GOTS certified. The wool is produced from a rare breed of sheep from the Himalayas. It is cleaned using organic detergents, without any bleach or dye. Applying the overarch- ing project principles, the mixed fibres are spun, woven and then printed with GOTS certified inks.

From continent to continentWhen you visit Istanbul, there is one thing you should not miss out on: a boat trip on the Bosporus, the strait of water that separates the European half of Istanbul from the Asian half. There is nothing more wonderful than floating across the glittering waves under the beautiful blue skies with a fresh sea breeze on your face, while you soak up sights like the magnificent Sultan’s palace, the old 19th century wooden villas and the rolling green hills. Municipal ferries and countless private ships line up on both banks, setting off on long tours that stop at a number of different destinations.

It may not be easy to identify the unusual location used as the backdrop for the R Collection photo shoot. The Sancaklar Camii is a mosque built into the side of a hill so that it is almost completely underground. You can find it in the Büyükçekmece neighbourhood, right on the western edge of Istanbul. A minimalist construction, the simple and elegant design is enticing and unique in its modernity. This makes the Sancaklar Camii the per-fect example for star Turkish architect Emre Arolat’s work.

Since he founded “Emre Arolat Architects (EAA)” with a partner in 2004, the company has received countless international awards and is now one of the largest, most celebrated firms in Turkey. Extraordinary is the term that forms the basis of Arolat’s work: always taking the chance on something new, breaking through the expected and transforming perspectives. This approach has given rise to a number of buildings in Istanbul that provide an impressive contrast to the more traditional look of the city’s architecture. No noise, no cars, clean air and lots of space to play: Prince Island, known in Turkish simply as Adalar (islands), is a little piece of paradise for children. And for adults too of course! For stressed Istanbulites looking for a way to escape the hustle and bustle of the huge city, the islands are a classic city oasis. There are nine islands altogether, five of which are inhabited. A trip to the islands on the public ferries will take you about an hour, while private sea buses get you there a little quicker. Small motor boats also travel to the islands’ piers during summer months.

First-time visitors to one of the Prince Islands will find themselves stepping into another world, a place where time seems to have stood still. The majority of the architecture is made up of stunning wooden villas from the 19th century. You see horses and carts everywhere you look – after all, no cars are allowed on the islands. In comparison to the traffic chaos in the city, the peace and quiet here is like paradise. However, the silence is always broken once a year – during the summer holidays in Istanbul when day trippers stream to the islands in their thousands.
