A Message from Greg GicziPresident and GM, WNIT Public Television

Dear WNIT Investors:

Yes, investors! And, thank you for that! “Viewers Like You” make up WNIT’s largest revenue source. We appreciate your support to our organization which places the educational and public service value of programs above all. We prioritize investing your donations into national and locally produced content.

While we have a change of seasons coming in September, we will remain in election season into November. You can continue to count on WNIT and PBS to be your primary source of balanced political coverage. You will nd highlights and listings for several election-oriented programs in this WNIT Planner. However, I want to make particular note of a special Frontline on Tuesday, September 27 at 9pm. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are two of the most polarizing presidential candidates in recent history. Frontline’s “e Choice 2016” is a two-hour interwoven investigative biography of Clinton and Trump which draws on dozens of interviews from friends, family, advisors and adversaries, as well as authors, journalists and political insiders. is is powerful and trustworthy journalism from PBS.

One of our more popular local productions is WNIT’s Legends of Michiana series. For the past few years, we have selected 2-3 individuals/families/organizations per year who have made a signicant impact in Michiana. On ursday, September 22 at 8pm, we will feature Dr. Dane Miller, a co-founder of Biomet corporation in Kosciusko County and a benefactor to many organizations throughout the region. e following ursday, September 29 at 8pm, we will feature Merlin Hanson of Berrien County, a regional entrepreneur and philanthropist. ese are interesting and inspiring stories you will enjoy.

What is a great way to get most out of your WNIT membership? By providing your email address. We oen have free event ticket oers that, because of their timeliness, only get communicated to members via email. If we don’t have your email address, we can’t keep you informed! We promise not to abuse the use of your email address, nor share it with anyone.

Poldark alert! Season 2 of Poldark premieres Sunday, September 25 at 8pm and Hamilton’s America premieres Friday, October 21.

On November 2, WNIT will launch a new weekly program on education in Michiana. I like to say that WNIT stands for education. is internet-based and broadcast program will include insightful features about education in Michiana and the cycle of lifelong learning. Lots more to come in your November-December Planner.

Enjoy your September-October schedule of great programming from WNIT – your Michiana PBS station. ank you for all the support you give us.

Best wishes,

Greg Giczi President & General Manager

Father BrownFather Brown: Season 4The lovably quirky Father Brown cycles back on to the screens for a fourth series of mysteries in the sleepy Cotswold village of Kembleford. Once again, he is aided by no-nonsense parish secretary Mrs. McCarthy, glamorous socialite Lady Felicia Montague and her chauffeur Sid Carter. In this series a man missing for years returns just as his wife is about to remarry, but when he’s found dead, suspicion falls on those closest to him. The village gets a dose of Hollywood glamour when a film crew arrives. The episodes will air each Thursday at 9pm and Sunday at 7pm.

Episode 6 – e Rod of Asclepius (October 20 & 23)Lady Felicia’s reckless driving lands her in the next hospital bed to Mrs. McCarthy – with a killer on the loose.

Episode 7 – e Missing Man (October 27 & October 30)Father Brown deduces that the apparent suicide of a recently returned RAF pilot was actually murder.

Episode 8 – e Resurrectionists (November 3 & 6)Father Brown is determined to find out why the body of a young man was taken from his graveyard.

Legends of Michiana: Dane Miller – Brilliant Mind, Humble Man, FriendDane Miller set out to do things dierently from very early on in his career. While working on his doctoral thesis, any time he could spend on his sailboat was considered his “anti-thesis time” and the name Antithesis stuck for that boat, and all the boats that followed. In his approach to orthopedics, management and community redevelopment in the Warsaw, Indiana area, being the ‘antithesis’ of the status quo was an invaluable asset. He was an innovator, an engineer, a passionate supporter of his colleagues and a friend and collaborator to orthopedic surgeons. e ripples of Dane’s impact are felt around the world with countless people walking around with new knees and hips thanks to his work. Beyond Biomet, Dane invested in his community. He valued the entire community and knew that to attract the best and brightest employees; he had to have an area that was appealing to families and young professionals.

Dane and Mary Louise married in 1966 and began a partnership that lasted nearly 50 years. From race cars to boats, colleges to community development, Dane and Mary Louise have changed the lives of so many people in Indiana and around the world. Mary Louise continues the work of the Dane Miller Foundation and takes her responsibilities of maintaining Dane’s legacy as her most important job.

WNIT is proud to present this biographical feature of Dane and show how an engineer, philanthropist, and community leader has reinvented orthopedics, his community and le a lasting impression on those he met. "Dane Miller – Brilliant Mind, Humble Man, Friend” airs on ursday, September 22nd at 8pm and, again, Sunday, September 25th at 6pm on WNIT channel 34.1.

Legends of Michiana: Merlin Hanson – Still Just a ToolmakerBorn in South Bend, Indiana, Mr. Hanson began a career in the tool and die business following a brief time spent in the Navy. Aer 50 years of wonderful experiences and having met people in high positions, Merlin Hanson is proud to say that he is still “Just a Toolmaker.”

Merlin’s own words have helped guide this process. He wrote a short biography that details the lives of his parents who were both deaf and his childhood in South Bend. Whether it was working in the garden with his Aunt Ruth or building things in shop class, he relished any opportunity to work with his hands and that fostered his sense of accomplishment and desire to create. Merlin and his longtime friend, Dan Hillegas, founded Weldun Industries, a tool and die shop that originally employed 3 people and went on to be sold to Bosch Corporation of Germany. Following his success with Weldun, Merlin went on to acquire and run cold storage, beverage and other mold fabrication enterprises. Keeping it in the family, his children are involved at many levels of each of his businesses.

Merlin and his wife Carolyn married in 1982 and together have taken very active roles as philanthropists and leaders in the community. ey are avid art collectors and have donated a bulk of their collection to be displayed at e Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College. One of their most recent endeavors is the Merlin & Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center at Lakeland Health that provides hospice care to patients and their families. Merlin is also passionate about yachting and he and Carolyn own seven yachts that they enjoy as they split their time between St. Joseph, Michigan and Florida.

WNIT is proud to present this biographical feature of Merlin, showing how an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and community leader has had a major impact on our community, on ursday, September 29 at 8pm and Sunday, October 2 at 6pm on channel 34.1.

e feature lm documentary Hamilton’s America brings history to vivid life through the contemporary perspective of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary hip-hop musical, Hamilton. e story of Alexander Hamilton is most remembered for its dramatic conclusion, in which Hamilton was killed in a duel by Vice President Aaron Burr, but his immeasurable contributions to modern society have largely been forgotten by today’s general public. Just in time for election year, Hamilton’s America will provide a primetime audience with intimate access to Miranda and his colleagues during the two years leading up to the Broadway opening of the Tony Award-winning smash hit musical. is “hip-hop-historical” documentary features a young, dynamic cast of actors as our guides, along with commentary from some of today’s most notable thinkers and artists, brushing the dust o America’s fascinating early history. e most buzzed-about show in years and the hottest ticket in decades, Hamilton is redening how audiences learn about history, but also how they engage with these timeless issues. Produced by Academy Award® and Emmy®-Winning producers RadicalMedia.

Great Performances: America’s Hamilton airs Friday, October 21, 9 on WNIT Public Television.

e WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. ese essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.

Directors’ Circle

SupporterSpotlight

Mary Horan has been a Director’s Circle member since 2014 . While she is devoted to most of the PBS mainstays like Masterpiece eatre and mysteries like Inspector Lewis, she also enjoys documentaries and, of course, Rick Steves. Mary supports WNIT because of the programs she enjoys, but perhaps more so because of WNIT’s commitment to early childhood education programming.

Mary is the director of marketing and public relations at Lake City Bank in Warsaw and lives at the Village at Winona Lake. ough she came to the area by way of North Carolina a few years ago, Mary grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She has enjoyed being closer to her family and settling into the scenic Winona Lake area.

WNIT thanks Mary for all of her time and eort in support of great local programming.
