Admin & Finance Department
In this quarter, Mote Oo announced the
promotion of three new managers.
Shwe Htay Khant will take over as the
Manager of the Teacher Training
Department, Nilar Win will be Myanmar
Publications Manager, and
Moe Moe Thet will be Finance Manager,
starting in the New Year 2019. Mote Oo
wishes all the best to these three
managers with their new duties and responsibilities.
In the beginning of December, the Administration team joined the Peace Camp
organized by Mote Oo’s Peace Team for 3 days event, and it was very pleasure for the
team for meeting with new friends and leaving civil area where they have been stuck
most of the days.
In December, we participated in the National Network for Educational Reform in
Monywa, Sagaing Region, where we sold books and attended workshops. We also joined
an educational seminar in Naypyidaw with representatives from parliament, National
Education Policy Commission, and Ministry of Education.
At the end of the year we had a staff party inviting past, present and future staff. Sadly, we farewell Morgan, who has helped with Human Resources as well as his curriculum tasks, and Naw Htay Nyo, Peace Trainer, who are off to start new lives in Melbourne and
Mawlamyine.

The peace team's last quarter of
2018 was characterized by
relationship building and
cooperation, internally and
externally. Nang Lao Kham, our new

workshop with the Kalyana Mitta
Foundation, exploring the multi-
perspective approach to history in
peace building processes. Naw Htwe

workshop on facilitation skills for
peace trainers to the FLAG youth
group in Mandalay. Members of
FLAG will soon organize their own
peace training based on our
approach and materials which is
very exciting news!
That the seeds of peace are slowly
but steadily sprouting was most
evident at our peace camp which we
held at the beginning of December
for our training alumni and friends
from our network. About 40 peace
activists and educators from across
the whole country came together for
3 days to discuss and plan projects,
explore new ways of cooperation
and to learn from each other.
After months of hard work, research
and preparation, a new Civic
Education project is starting soon as

Curriculum Department
The Curriculum Department did a workshop with Parami
Institutite, with representatives of five schools and
organisations learning the basics of curriculum design. We
have, at long last, started the process of writing an Ethical
Leadership module, and have arranged to work on it with
the brilliant writers at Wind and Bones. Check them out at
http://windandbones.com/. Research Skills is on schedule
for Q2 2019 and will go to publications soon. The New
Teacher one is being revised, and we have a complete draft
of an Introduction to Teaching.

Special Projects
As well as the abovementioned projects on disability
awareness and report layout, Mote Oo staff have
been developing a Social Cohesion Toolkit for the
Centre for Social Integrity, and finished a review and
update of the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Life Skills
curriculum. We are also assisting Studer Trust with
the Monitoring and Evaluation of their teacher
training programme.

The FLAG Youth Group
The FLAG Youth Group was founded by a socially engaged
group of young people in Mandalay in 2016. Nowadays FLAG
has over 60 members and is organized as a CSO. FLAG
promotes human dignity and social justice in different forms,
but mainly focuses on raising awareness for the situation of
children - making them heard as full members of Myanmar
society with rights and unique perspectives. Furthermore,
they also do projects which specifically try to improve the
situation of street children.
Some leading members of FLAG first attended a peace
training with Mote Oo in 2017 and since then we're in contact
with them. Recently they asked us to support them in
delivering their own peace trainings in 2019. We were
delighted at their request and did a second training in
December which mainly focused on training planning. Seeing
our partners on the way to deliver their own peace trainings
is a joy!

Taáng Women’s Organization
The Taa ng Women’s Organization is based in Lashio, Northern Shan State. It was established in 2000 as the Palaung Women's Organization. It runs different programs such as women’s political development , elimination of violence against women, health, education and Taa ng culture and literature program.
Mote Oo’s Teacher Training team conducted Training of Trainers for Civic Education with teachers and staff from TWO. They were very enthusiastic to learn necessary skills to be an effective trainer, how to present, facilitate and coach civic education to their participants. We want to collaborate more in the future to improve the quality of trainers in order to empower Taa ng to get peace, equality and justice in their community.

There are many ways to
promote peace in the world but the best way is to
promote it within yourself. Peace is a gradual and wonderful
event that occurs by compassionate people inspired to help others
discover the joy of peace. Norman Vincent Peale said “Change your
thoughts and you change your world.” So if many individuals can promote
peace within themselves, this can also be promoting peace in the world.

I’m Shona, originally from Singapore but currently
a DPhil candidate at the University of Oxford. My
research is about development, civil society, and
governance in Karen State. I have been living in
Hpa-An for three months, sent by Mote Oo to
support the Education Gathering Group (EGG)
Academy. Although I am primarily a researcher, I
have taught in various settings, for government
schools and universities, and as the leader of the
public education team in an organisation
supporting migrant workers back home.
At EGG, I co-teach and mentor in social science. Here, students often learn about issues—
hydropower, migration, conflict—that they have already encountered in their lives. I aim to create a space where they can understand these
experiences in the national, regional, and global context. This can be empowering, particularly for
students from rural, ethnic minority, conflict-afflicted areas, who are often on the receiving end
of decisions made in Yangon or Naypyidaw. I also aim for an environment where having voiced their
experiences, students learn primarily from each other, rather than from a foreign “sayama-gyi.”
These classroom experiences inform a small
amount of behind-the-scenes work I do for Mote Oo, training teachers and editing textbooks. I am
constantly amazed by students, teachers, and Mote Oo staff, all of whom meet the challenge of
providing quality education outside of the usual government frameworks with incredible tenacity.

Hi, I'm Lucia Haikin Htoo (twelve years old, thirteen in
January, so I'm not paid). I'm an intern working for Mote Oo
and have been doing so for the past three years. I come
around to the office every Friday and catalog the library
books, fixing any books that are: mislabeled, missing a label,
not labeled, are not supposed to be there at all.
I also update the incomometer once a month and will
occasionally make illustrations for textbooks and newsletters.
When I'm not working for Mote Oo I enjoy drawing and
writing, often combining the two to make characters. I also really like cooking and horse riding, and if I have free time I enjoy learning American Sign Language.
