Q1.
Students had to listen to some tourists asking for directions to specific places and choose the correct direction from those shown. The difficulties lay in Q5(ii) where just over 50% of students correctly identified Siga todo recto. Está al final de la calle. Equally, in Q5(iii) nearly two thirds of all students did not understand Cruce el puente. Está muy cerca.

This question required candidates to listen to Lola describing what she was going to do in town. Almost 60% of the Foundation Level candidates failed to understand quiero cortarme el pelo in (i), debo comprar unas sandalias azules nuevas in (ii), iré a ver a mis compañeras de clase in (iii) and hoy a más tardar tengo que mandar un regalo in (iv).

Question 10 required the candidates to identify the correct place in Zaragoza and the reason for going there heard as in two short dialogues. They were required to indicate their comprehension by writing single word answers in English in a text box. The majority of candidates answered in English although some answers were answered in Spanish and thus failed to score the allocated marks. In Question 10a part (i) failure to understand iglesia led to frequent incorrect and random answers such as cinema,
glacier,beach, England and theatre. In part (ii) antigua was commonly interpreted as interesting, to pray and fun. In Question 10b part (i) centro de la ciudad was most commonly thought to be the shopping centre hence in part (ii) candidates made frequent references to shopping, to eat, it’s cheap and the weather.

Question 10 targeting Grade E required candidates to listen to Merche talking about her town and then answer the questions in English. Again this year it was pleasing to note that candidates heeded the rubric as answers in Spanish did not appear. In (a) misunderstanding led to incorrect answers such as: Spain, East Spain, the outskirts of the city and North of the city. In (bi) just over 50% wrote the correct answer. Failure to understand produced incorrect answers such as: the people, most are Spanish and the little beach. In (bii) candidates who did not understand me gusta porque es limpia produced answers such as: there are woods, there is a lot to do, it is near, it is fun. Although 70% of candidates achieved the mark in (c) incorrect answers included: there are lots of shops, it is too close to her, no-one speaks Spanish.

Candidates were required to listen to some friends talking about their town and the question targeted Grade E. On the whole the question was answered quite well although me gusta mucho ir de compras al centro comercial in (ii) and lo mejor es que hay restaurants animados in (iv) proved to be difficult for the weaker candidates.
Q7.
Q9 was a grid filling task which required students to listen to some friends talking about their town. Overall this question was done extremely well by all students and it is clear that at Foundation Level places in the town are widely known.
Q8.
This question required candidates to listen to Tomás talking about his job as a tour guide and select the correct answer from those shown in the list. (ii) was answered very well by most candidates whereas in (i) many candidates misunderstood esta ha sido la mejor decisión que he tomado en mi vida therefore failing to score a mark. In (iii) quite a number of candidates failed to understand lo más interesante de mi trabajo son las visitas guiadas para los hombres de negocios and link it with businessmen.

Question 3 required candidates to listen to two short dialogues which took place in a tourist office and to select items referred to in the conversations from a number of listed possibilities. Most candidates scored 2 of the 4 marks available for this question. Problems encountered were mainly with Cristina's questions
and the matching of the heard castillo and catedral with the given prompt monuments. With David’s questions there was some confusion between enfrente del parque, the prompt for directions to the cafeteria the destination itself.
Q10.
Candidates had to listen to some young people discussing the benefits of their town and match them against a given number of headings. The question was very well done by the majority of candidates at both Foundation and Higher tiers. The main problems proved to lie in Alfredo (i) gasto mi dinero en CDs which some candidates did not equate with going to the shopping centre and in María (iii) me gusta ir de excursión en barco which candidates failed to interpret as going to the river.
