THIS PROJECT WAS DESIGNED TO FUNCTION AS A PLACE TO OBSERVE A
LANDSCAPE THROUGH THREE DISTICT SPATIAL ZONES: A PLACE OF ENTRY, A
PLACE TO SIT AND TAKE IN THE VIEW, AND A PLACE TO OBSERVE THE LANDSCAPE
WHILE STANDING. THE BUILDING IS COMPOSED OF REINFORCED CONCRETE
AND IS INTEGRATED INTO THE SITE. SOME LINES ARE PARALLEL TO THE SITE, WHILE
THE ANGLED COLUMN IN THE FRONT IS PERPENDICULAR TO THE PATH, DRAWING
A USER IN. THE TWO SLOPING ROOF LINES PLAY WITH DIFFERENT SCALES THAT
OCCUR AT THE SITE. THE ROOF OVER THE ENTRYWAY STARTS AT A HUMAN SCALE,
PULLING A VISITOR INTO THE BUILDING, AND THEN RISES UP TO THE BUILDING’S
SCALE, ALLOWING AMPLE LIGHT AND VENTILATION INTO THE BUILDING WHILE
STILL PROVIDING PROTECTION. THE SECOND ROOF STARTS AT THE BUILDING’S
HEIGHT AND SLOPES DOWN, DIRECTING A PEDESTRIAN TO THE BEST VIEW AND
THE SEATING AREA LOCATED ON THE CANTILEVERED PART OF THE BUILDING.PLAN

WHEN THINKING ABOUT THE DESIGN OF
THIS PROJECT, I TRIED TO MAKE THE
BUILDING FEEL MONUMENTAL, BUT
INTIMATE AT THE SAME TIME WITH VARYING
HEIGHTS AND SIZES OF STRUCTURE. THE
BUILDING CREATES A FEELING OF SOLID
AND VOID SPACES WHILE I EXPERIMENTED
WITH THE MANIPULATION OF MASS AND
SPACE.

THIS DESIGN WAS DONE FOR A WEEKEND RESIDENCE FOR A COUPLE, ONE OF WHOM IS A
WRITER, AND THE OTHER A MUSICIAN. THE HOUSE WAS DESIGNED TO INCLUDE TWO STUDIO
SPACES, ONE FOR EACH PERSON, MORE THAN ONE SLEEPING AREA, AND A PROTECTED
PARKING AREA FOR ONE CAR. BECAUSE THE HOUSE WAS LOCATED ON SHELTER COVE IN
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT THE HOUSE RESPOND TO THE SITE AND TAKE
ADVANTAGE OF THE DISTANT OCEAN VIEWS. THE HOUSE IS DESIGNED AS MASSES AND VOIDS
THAT INTERLOCK AND OVERLAP EACH OTHER. THE BOTTOM FLOOR IS A SQUARE THAT IS ROTATED
FORTY-FIVE DEGREES. THE TOP FLOOR IS ALSO A SQUARE THAT PENETRATES THE BOTTOM FLOOR,
CREATING TWO SPACES ON THE BOTTOM FLOOR AND ALLOWS FOR THE CREATION OF
BALCONIES ON THE TOP FLOOR. FURTHER INCORPORATING THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, THE
HOUSE ALSO ALLOWS FOR NATURAL VENTILATION WHEN APPROPRIATE.

THE WINDOWS ALL FACE OUT TOWARD
THE OCEAN. SOME WINDOWS ARE
OPAQUE, HELPING WITH SUN EXPOSURE.
THE LARGE FRONT WINDOW FACES THE
WEST, SO THE WINDOWS ARE INSTALLED
AS LOUVERS SO THAT THEY CAN BE
T U R N E D A S T H E S U N M O V E S
THROUGHOUT THE DAY, ALSO HELPING
WITH THE SUN EXPOSURE.
BECAUSE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES WERE
IMPORTANT, A POOL WAS PLACED
FURTHER DOWN THE SITE WITH A
STAIRCASE. THIS STAIRCASE, ALONG
WITH A FAUX WALL OUTSIDE OF THE
BOTTOM FLOOR, EMPHASIZE THE
CIRCULATION PATTERN OF THE HOUSE.

THE HOUSE IS ARRANGED WITH THE TOP
FLOOR BEING THE FLOOR THAT YOU
ENTER ONTO WHEN YOU FIRST COME
INTO THE HOUSE. THIS FLOOR SERVES AS
A MORE PUBLIC SPACE. IT INCLUDES THE
LIVING ROOM, KITCHEN, BREAKFAST
AREA, LAUNDRY ROOM, PANTRY, AND
THREE BALCONIES. THESE BALCONIES
HELP MAXIMIZE THE SITE’S VIEWS AND
CREATE A HOUSE THAT IS VERSATILE IN
OUTDOOR AND INDOOR SPACES.
THE BOTTOM FLOOR SERVES AS THE
HOUSE’S MORE PRIVATE SPACE. THE
MASTER BEDROOM AND BATHROOM
ALONG WITH THE WRITER’S STUDIO, A
LIBRARY, AND THE MUSICIAN’S STUDIO
ARE LOCATED ON THIS FLOOR. A MEDIA
ROOM IS ALSO LOCATED ON THE
BOTTOM FLOOR FOR ENTERTAINMENT
PURPOSES.

THIS PROJECT WAS A STUDY IN DEVELOPMENT OF
DESIGN IDEAS AND CONCEPTS IN RELATION TO
SITE CONTEXT, CLIMATE, CIRCULATION, AND
USER NEEDS. IT WAS ALSO A STUDY OF FORM,
CONFIGURATIONS, AND STRUCTURE. THE
DESIGN WAS INTENDED TO SERVE AS A
SHELTERED WAITING SPACE FOR PASSENGERS
WHILE THEY AWAITED FERRY BOATS. THE
TERMINAL WAS DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE
SIX TO TEN CARS AND EIGHTY TO ONE HUNDRED
PEOPLE.
SINCE THE PROJECT WAS SET IN MALAYSIA, THE
MAIN CURVED MEMBER OF THE DESIGN IMITATES
THE NATIVE ROOF LINES OF THE AREA. THE
ROOFS ALSO SLOPE UP, RESEMBLING THIS SAME
CHARACTERISTIC. VENTILATION AND AIR FLOW
WAS IMPORTANT TO THE DESIGN, SO THE BOTTOM
HALF OF THE BUILDING WAS LEFT OPEN WITH
EVENLY SPACED COLUMNS USED TO PROTECT
CARS AND PEDESTRIANS FROM THE EDGE OF THE
SITE. THE MAIN ROOF ALSO INCORPORATES
VENTS TO ALLOW FOR MORE CROSS
VENTILATION.
DECORATIVE HORIZONTAL BARS WERE ADDED TO
MIMIC THE ORNATE ARCHITECTURE FOUND IN
MALAYSIA.

WHILE CREATING THIS DESIGN, IT WAS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT THE SEPARATION OF VEHICLES AND PEDESTRIANS WAS
ESSENTIAL. VEHICLES CAN BE DRIVEN ON TO THE TERMINAL FROM THE LEFT AND EXIT TO THE RIGHT. THIS ALLOWS FOR
CONSTANT CIRCULATION. IN ORDER TO SEPARATE PEDESTRIANS, A TAXI DROP-OFF WAS INCORPORATED TO DROP
PEDESTRIANS OFF AT THE COURTYARD LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF THE BOTTOM FLOOR. FROM THERE, PEDESTRIANS CAN
EITHER USE THE CENTRALLY LOCATED ELEVATOR TO REACH THE SECOND FLOOR, OR THEY CAN TAKE EITHER OF THE STAIRWELLS
WHICH ARE PROVIDED.
THE SECOND FLOOR ALSO CONTROLS PEDESTRIAN FLOW BY ALLOWING FOR ONCOMING AND EXITING PASSENGERS.
THOSE WHO ARE ONCOMING WAIT IN THE DESIGNATED AREA WITH BENCHES AFTER PAYING TO RIDE THE FERRY. EXITING
PASSENGERS EXIT TO THE RIGHT, NOT ALLOWING THEM TO RE-ENTER THE AREA THAT CONTAINS THE BENCHES AND
RESTROOMS, BUT STILL PROVIDING THEM WITH ACCESS TO A SNACK BAR. AFTER EXITING THE FERRY THE PASSENGER EITHER
RETURNS TO THE BOTTOM LEVEL TO CATCH A TAXI, OR PICKS UP THEIR PERSONAL CAR.
VIEWS WERE VERY IMPORTANT IN THIS PROJECT SO THE CONTROLLER’S OFFICE IS LOCATED AT THE VERY FRONT OF THE
TERMINAL, ALLOWING HIM TO SEE THE FERRY BOATS COMING AND GOING AT ALL TIMES. ALSO, ALL SIDES OF THE STRUCTURE
ARE TRANSPARENT, ALLOWING FOR THE BEST VIEWS POSSIBLE OF THE PULAO PENANG COASTLINE.

THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED AS A SMALL MUSEUM
AND RESEARCH CENTER THAT HOUSES EXHIBITION
SPACE FOR A COLLECTION OF MEDIEVAL
ARCHITECTURAL ARTIFACTS FOUND IN THE CITY.
THE BUILDING CONTAINS A STONE COLUMN AND
FRIEZE, AS WELL AS A SMALL COLLECTION OF
DOCUMENTS FROM THE SAME TIME PERIOD. THE
PUBLIC AS WELL AS RESEARCHERS USE THE
BUILDING AND IT WAS IMPORTANT TO BE SENSITIVE
TO THE LOCAL ARCHITECTURE AND CLIMATE. THE
BUILDING IS HEATED, BUT CONTAINS NO AIR
CONDITIONING.

THE BUILDING IS ARRANGED SO THAT THE BOTTOM
FLOOR IS PUBLIC SPACE, THE SECOND FLOOR
CONTAINS SEMI-PUBLIC SPACE, AND THE TOP
FLOOR IS USED FOR PRIVATE SPACE. TO
ACCOMMODATE THE SPANISH CULTURE OF
STAYING UP LATER, THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED TO
BE OPEN ON THE BOTTOM FLOOR TWENTY-FOUR
HOURS A DAY. THIS ALLOWS THE ARTIFACTS TO BE
VIEWED AT ALL TIMES. THE STREET SIDE ENTRANCE IS
A TWO STORY HIGH SPACE THAT ENLARGES AS YOU
ENTER, MIMICKING HOW SPANISH STREETS ARE
NARROW AND THEN WIDEN INTO LARGE PLAZAS.
THE INTERIOR COURTYARD IS OPEN TO THE
OUTDOORS, ALLOWING FOR AMPLE SUNLIGHT
AND VENTILATION. THE FENESTRATION OF THE
FACADE REFLECTS THE DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES THAT
OCCUR IN THE BUILDING. BECAUSE THE BACK OF
THE BUILDING FACES A LARGE PUBLIC SPACE, THE
BUILDING CAN BE ACCESSED FROM THIS SIDE AS
WELL. THE ROOF LINE IS RAISED ALLOWING FOR
BETTER VENTILATION AND CIRCULATION OF AIR.
THE BUILDING’S FENESTRATION IS A PLAY OF SOLIDS
AND VOIDS ALLOWING THE BUILDING TO RELATE TO
OLDER BUILDINGS, INCLUDING A CATHEDRAL, AS
WELL AS A CONTEMPORARY HOUSE, WHICH THE
BUILDING WRAPS. THE MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING
IS ALSO MADE OF NATIVE MATERIAL.

THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES THE FACT THAT THE BABY BOOMER GENERATION IS GETTING CLOSER
AND CLOSER TO RETIREMENT. THIS GENERATION IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM THEIR PARENTS, BOTH
ECONOMICALLY AND PHYSICALLY. THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME WANTS
OR NEEDS AS THEIR PARENTS DID WHEN THEY REACHED RETIREMENT AGE. THE GOAL OF THIS
DESIGN IS TO PROVIDE A SENIOR CLUB, NOT A RETIREMENT HOME, THAT THIS GENERATION OF
BABY BOOMERS COULD COME TO AND ENJOY THEIR RETIREMENT WITH THEIR FRIENDS.
OUTDOOR SPACES WERE REQUIRED FOR ACTIVITIES AND WALKING. A LARGE MULTI-PURPOSE
SPACE IS ALSO NEEDED FOR LARGE EVENTS, OR A GYM FACILITY. FIVE SEMI-PRIVATE ROOMS
FOR CLASSES AND MEETINGS WERE ALSO REQUIRED, ALONG WITH FIVE PRIVATE ROOMS FOR
REST AND THERAPY. THE DESIGN ALSO INCLUDES A DIRECTOR’S OFFICE, OFFICES, KITCHEN,
AND SEATING AREAS.

AMPLE OUTDOOR SPACE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO
THIS DESIGN. OUTDOOR AREAS WHERE PEOPLE
COULD SIT UNDER TREES AND ENJOY WATER
FEATURES WERE INCORPORATED AS WELL AS
OUTDOOR AREAS WITH A PURPOSE. AN
INTERIOR COURTYARD IS PLACED IN THE MIDDLE
OF THE BUILDING ALLOWING FOR OUTDOOR
EATING. THE MIXING OF INDOOR AND
OUTDOOR SPACES IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT PART
OF THIS DESIGN. THE CIRCULATION AROUND
THE BUILDING FOLLOWS THE INTERIOR CURTAIN
WALL WHICH SURROUNDS THE COURTYARD,
ALLOWING FOR CONSTANT VIEWS OF THE
OUTDOORS. ROOF DECKS ARE ALSO
INCORPORATED FOR BETTER VIEWS OF THE CITY
AND CAN BE USED FOR OUTSIDE PARTIES. THE
LOBBY AREA IS A GRAND CYLINDER THAT
AUTOMATICALLY TELLS A VISITOR EXACTLY WHERE
THE ENTRANCE IS LOCATED. SUNLIGHT WILL
POOR INTO THE SPACE IN THE MORNING HOURS
AND THEN WOULD CONTINUE TO LIGHT THE
SPACE WITH SOFT DAYLIGHT THROUGHOUT THE
DAY. THE FENESTRATION OF THE BUILDING
ENVELOPE IS DESIGNED SO THAT SPACES
ENCLOSED IN THE BUILDING ARE DEPICTED ON
THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING AS WELL.

THIS PROJECT IS A NEW BUILDING TYPE FOR THE SANTA FE RAILROAD. IT IS INTENDED TO BE USED
BY INSPECTORS TO CHECK FOR HAZARDOUS CARGO AND ILLEGAL MATERIALS THAT MIGHT BE
TRANSPORTED. THIS BUILDING IS A NON-PERMANENT FACILITY THAT IS ABLE TO BE TRANSPORTED
THROUGH SHIPPING CONTAINERS AND ASSEMBLED QUICKLY AT EACH OF ITS REQUIRED
LOCATIONS. AN INSPECTOR’S OFFICE IS REQUIRED TO BE ENCLOSED AND HAVE VIEWS WITH
ACCESS TO THE RAILCARS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. A GALLERY THAT ALLOWS A WORKER TO WALK
THE FULL LENGTH OF THE STATION IS ALSO A NECESSITY. THE STRUCTURE IS ONE HUNDRED AND
FIFTY FEET LONG AND HAS A SLIM WIDTH. THE STRUCTURE PROVIDES, VENTILATION, DAYLIGHT,
SHADE, AND SHELTER FROM THE WIND.

TRUSSES ARE USED AS THE STRUCTURE
FOR THIS FACILITY. THEY CAN BE EASILY
BROKEN INTO THREE TO FOUR PIECES
AND REASSEMBLED ON ANY SITE WITH
NUTS AND BOLTS. ALUMINUM POLES
STRETCHING HORIZONTALLY FROM
EACH TRUSS PROVIDE FOR WIND
SUPPORT AND ALLOW CORRUGATED
METAL CLADDING TO ATTACH TO THE
STRUCTURE. PREASSEMBLED LOUVERS
ARE ALSO PART OF THE CLADDING,
ALLOWING DAYLIGHT, SHADE, AND
WIND TO ENTER, OR BE BLOCKED FROM
THE STRUCTURE. STAIR STEPPING THE
TRUSSES ALLOWS ADD I T IONAL
SUNLIGHT AND VENTILATION TO
PENETRATE TO THE CENTER OF THE
BUILDING.
LOCATING THE INSPECTOR OFFICE IN
THE CENTER OF THE BUILDING ALLOWS
FOR THE BEST VIEWS FOR THE RAILCARS.
CIRCULATION IS AVAILABLE FROM BOTH
ENDS OF THE STRUCTURE AND
CONNECTS AT THE OFFICE.

THIS PROJECT WAS DESIGNED AS A GROUP PROJECT AND IS LOCATED IN HOUSTON’S
MIDTOWN, WHICH SITS BETWEEN DOWNTOWN AND THE MEDICAL DISTRICT. THE DESIGN
INCLUDES RETAIL DEVELOPMENT ON THE BOTTOM LEVEL OF THE MID-RISE BUILDING WITH
RESIDENTIAL SPACE ABOVE. THE MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT STARTED WITH A PROGRAM
OF FIVE HUNDRED APARTMENT UNITS AND TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND SQUARE FEET OF
RETAIL SPACE. FROM THIS PROGRAM THE CLASS WAS ALLOWED TO ALTERNATE THE
PROGRAM AS EACH GROUP SAW FIT. OUR GROUP CHOSE TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF
RESIDENTIAL UNITS TO INCLUDE AMPLE GREEN SPACE. THE APARTMENT UNITS WERE AIMED
TOWARDS YOUNG, SINGLE PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN DOWNTOWN OR THE MEDICAL
DISTRICT. BEING ABLE TO INCORPORATE BUILDING SPACE AS WELL AS GREEN SPACE WAS
VERY IMPORTANT.

GREEN SPACE PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE
IN THIS PROJECT. THE GREEN SPACE
TAKES UP FORTY PERCENT OF THE SITE
AND SERVES AS A VISUAL AXIS AND
FORM OF ORDER FOR THE PROJECT.
THE BUILDING MASSES ARE BROKEN UP
AND STAIR STEP AT CERTAIN PLACES
ALLOWING FOR AMPLE SUNLIGHT AND
GOOD VIEWS FOR EACH APARTMENT.
ROOF GARDENS ARE ALSO USED TO
INCORPORATE GREEN AREAS FOR
RESIDENTS THAT WANT A MORE PRIVATE
AREA TO RELAX IN. A VARIETY OF
MATERIALS ARE USED ON THE
BUILDING’S ENVELOPE INCLUDING
ZINC PANELS, BRICK, CONCRETE, AND
PRESSURE TREATED WOOD, TO FURTHER
BREAK UP THE LARGE MASSES AND
BRING THE BUILDING DOWN TO A
MORE HUMAN SCALE. THE BRICK ON
THE ANCHOR BUILDINGS PEELS BACK
AND IS REPLACED WITH GLAZING ON
THE CORNERS TO FURTHER LIGHTEN THE
FEEL OF THE STRONG MASSES.

SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY PARKING PLACES ARE PLACED UNDERGROUND IN A TWO LEVEL
PARKING GARAGE. THE CENTRAL HUB SPACE LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SITE AND IN THE
MIDDLE OF THE GREEN SPACE SERVES AS AN ELEVATOR CORE FOR FOUR ELEVATORS WHICH
PENETRATE TO THE PARKING GARAGE. SKY BRIDGES CONNECT THE TWO MAIN BUILDINGS TO
THE HUB. WITH THE GREEN SPACE CUTTING THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE SITE, PEOPLE ARE
DRAWN TO THE CENTER AND FORCED TO PASS THE RETAIL SHOPS THAT LINE THIS SPACE. A
WINDING STREAM IS USED TO BREAK UP THE HARSH LINES OF THE SIDEWALK, MAKING THE SPACE
MORE INVITING. CISTERNS ARE ALSO INCORPORATED INTO THE DESIGN, ALLOWING FOR A
UNIQUE WATER FEATURE WHILE ALSO SERVING THE PURPOSE OF HARVESTING RAINWATER.

THIS PROJECT WAS DEVELOPED AS A
GROUP PROJECT IN WHICH WE, THE
STUDENTS, WERE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY
TO WORK WITH THE ARCHITECTURE FIRM
OF PAGE SUTHERLAND PAGE AND THE
COMMUNITY OF JEFFERSON, TEXAS TO
CREATE A MASTER PLAN PROPOSAL FOR A
PREMIERE EQUESTRIAN CENTER IN EAST
TEXAS. THIS PROJECT WAS UNIQUE IN THAT
THE CLASS WAS ACTUALLY WORKING WITH
A CLIENT AND SPENT A FAIR AMOUNT OF
TIME PROGRAMMING THE PROJECT. IT
WAS IMPORTANT TO THE RESIDENTS OF
JEFFERSON THAT THEIR SMALL TOWN FEEL
STAY INTACT, THAT THE ARCHITECTURE
BLENDED WITH THE EXISTING COMMUNITY,
AND THAT EDUCATIONAL ASPECTS WERE
WORKED INTO THE PROGRAM SO THAT THE
FACILITY COULD BE USED YEAR ROUND
AND NEVER LAY DORMANT. THE MASTER
PLAN TO THE LEFT SHOWS HOW THE CLASS
CHOSE TO USE THE GIVEN 32 ACRES.
1000 STALLS ARE INCORPORATED INTO THE
DESIGN AS WELL AS A MAIN ARENA,
PRACTICE ARENA, WARM-UP PENS,
VENDOR SPACE, OFFICES, AND A
PARKING STRUCTURE.

THE PROJECT SITE LIES NEAR THE BIG
CYPRESS BAYOU AND A LEVEE, SO WATER
CONTROL WAS VERY IMPORTANT. WE
INCORPORATED A WATER RETENTION

PORTION OF THE GARAGE, DISGUISING THE STRUCTURE AND ALLOWING THE
BUILDING TO BETTER BLEND INTO THE EXISTING TOWN.

PROPOSED ARENA DESIGN__ELEVATION COMPLETED BY JOE ROSS; THE
ARENA’S ELEVATION IS VISUALLY BROKEN UP WITH VARYING ELEMENT HEIGHTS
AND MATERIALS IN ORDER TO BRING THE SCALE OF THE BUILDING DOWN. THIS
GIVES THE ARENA A MORE APPROACHABLE FEELING AND ALLOWS THE LARGE
STRUCTURE TO BLEND INTO THE EXISTING TOWN.

THIS DESIGN WAS COMPLETED AS A GROUP PROJECT WITH THE HELP OF SEVERAL PROMINENT
LUBBOCK ADVISORS. IT IS INTENDED TO HELP UNIFY LUBBOCK’S DOWNTOWN AREA AND
ENCOURAGE FURTHER GROWTH. REVIVING A DOWNTOWN IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE
INFRASTRUCTURE ALREADY EXISTS, CUTTING DOWN ON BUILDING COST, AND IT ALSO HELPS
COMBAT THE ISSUE OF URBAN SPRAWL.
MY GROUP FOCUSED ON THE
SOUTHWEST QUADRANT OF LUBBOCK’S DOWNTOWN. IT IS CURRENTLY SINGLE FAMILY
HOUSING, WHICH IS OUT OF CHARACTER FOR A DOWNTOWN. WE PROPOSED INTRODUCING
AN URBAN MALL FOR LUBBOCK. THIS URBAN MALL WOULD BE A MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT WITH
RETAIL STORES ON THE BOTTOM AND APARTMENTS LOCATED ABOVE. GREEN SPACE IS ALSO
INCORPORATED INTO THIS AREA AS WELL AS PARKING STRUCTURES TO HELP CUT DOWN ON THE
AMOUNT OF EMPTY PARKING LOTS CURRENTLY IN DOWNTOWN LUBBOCK.
AVENUE J IS USED AS THE NORTH-SOUTH CONNECTOR
OF THE FOUR DISTINCT QUADRANTS THAT EXIST IN DOWNTOWN LUBBOCK: THE CIVIC CENTER,
SOUTHWEST QUADRANT, DEPOT DISTRICT, AND THE ARTS DISTRICT.

FOR THE INDIVIDUAL PORTION OF THIS
DESIGN I CHOSE TO INTRODUCE AN
URBAN MARKET INTO THE SOUTHWEST
QUADRANT OF DOWNTOWN LUBBOCK.
I FELT THAT IF YOU ARE TRYING TO MOVE
PEOPLE INTO THIS AREA YOU NEED TO
PROVIDE SERVICES THAT WILL SUSTAIN
THE NEW RESIDENTS NEEDS. WHEN
THINKING ABOUT CERTAIN SERVICES
THAT PEOPLE LIVING AND WORKING IN
DOWNTOWN WOULD NEED I DECIDED
TO INCLUDE A GROCERY STORE, A
COFFEE SHOP, A DRY CLEANERS, AND A
FED-EX KINK’S FOR MAIL PURPOSES. THE
DRY CLEANERS, AND FED-EX KINKOS
WRAP THE BOTTOM PORTION OF A
PARKING GARAGE, HELPING TO MASK
THE UNSIGHTLY VIEWS THAT ARE OFTEN
A S S O C I A T E D W I T H PA R K I N G
STRUCTURES. A HEALTH CLUB IS
LOCATED ON TOP OF THE PARKING
STRUCTURE, GIVING THE NEW RESIDENTS
A PLACE TO WORK-OUT. A RESTAURANT
WAS ALSO ADDED AS WELL AS AMPLE
GREEN SPACE TO COMBAT THE LACK OF
NATURAL ELEMENTS IN DOWNTOWN
AREAS.
