King Salmon was a very remotelocation, and a very new experience forDonna coming from Florida. Tom wasan avid fisherman, and Donna wouldaccompany him on trips. Donna andTom had their first two children inAlaska. Because there were no medicalfacilities in King Salmon, Donna wasflown to Anchorage to have their firstchild, a daughter. Donna and Tom alsolived in Iliamna, on the AlaskanPeninsula, and then they moved toHomer. Homer had recently beenconnected to the road system fromAnchorage. They had no hospital, soDonna had to be flown to Seldovia, andTom was brought by mail boat, to havetheir second child, a son. The hospitalwas set in the home of a doctor and hiswife. Patients did their ownhousekeeping and, his wife made themeals. “Times were simpler then, and tothose of you reading this, you know ifyou wanted something done, you did ityourself.” Tom and Donna moved toPellston in 1955, and had two moredaughters. In 1960, they moved back toAlaska, and in 1962, returned toPellston to stay this time, where theycompleted their family with another son.
Donna and her family enjoyed livingin small town Pellston, going to theoutside movies, bringing their sleepingbags and popcorn and settling in for afun family evening watching a movie atthe village square.
When Tom retired, he andDonna set off in their motorhome. They enjoyed localcampgrounds, genealogy trips toother states, and visiting family inFlorida and Alaska.
