Donna S.

Donna was bornon December 28, inChicago, Illinois. Sheis one of 4 children.Donna attendedgrade school inIndianapolis, IN,before moving toDaytona Beach,Florida, where shegraduated.

Donna met herfuture husband, Tom,after his dischargefrom the Navy. Tomserved as a radiomanon submarine patrol.His interest in radiostarted when he wastwelve, learningMorse Code. Tomwas a lifelong hamradio operator. Heworked many bikeand dog sled races.Donna and Tommarried in October1950. They spenttheir honeymoondriving the AlcanHighway to Alaska.They spent a fewmonths in Anchoragebefore moving toKing Salmon, whereTom was employedwith the CAA, whichis now the FAA.

King Salmon was a very remotelocation, and a very new experience forDonna coming from Florida. Tom wasan avid fisherman, and Donna wouldaccompany him on trips. Donna andTom had their first two children inAlaska. Because there were no medicalfacilities in King Salmon, Donna wasflown to Anchorage to have their firstchild, a daughter. Donna and Tom alsolived in Iliamna, on the AlaskanPeninsula, and then they moved toHomer. Homer had recently beenconnected to the road system fromAnchorage. They had no hospital, soDonna had to be flown to Seldovia, andTom was brought by mail boat, to havetheir second child, a son. The hospitalwas set in the home of a doctor and hiswife. Patients did their ownhousekeeping and, his wife made themeals. “Times were simpler then, and tothose of you reading this, you know ifyou wanted something done, you did ityourself.” Tom and Donna moved toPellston in 1955, and had two moredaughters. In 1960, they moved back toAlaska, and in 1962, returned toPellston to stay this time, where theycompleted their family with another son.

Donna and her family enjoyed livingin small town Pellston, going to theoutside movies, bringing their sleepingbags and popcorn and settling in for afun family evening watching a movie atthe village square.

When Tom retired, he andDonna set off in their motorhome. They enjoyed localcampgrounds, genealogy trips toother states, and visiting family inFlorida and Alaska. After theirthree granddaughters were born,they too enjoyed trips in themotor home. Donna has threegreat-grandchildren, with anotherin the oven. They are her greatestjoys and she loves when theyvisit. Donna and Tom lovedhelping others and they wereoften called upon by their elderlyneighbors.

Donna enjoyed journaling, andtaking photographs, knitting,ceramics and various crafts. Sheand each of her siblings, andtheir parents, enjoyed celebrating50 years of marriage. Donna andTom were married for nearly 60years. Donna has been amember at the EmmanuelEvangelical Church for over 30years. She taught Sunday schoolthere and played piano at variouslocations, including Tendercareand Bay Bluffs.

Open TransportationWhat is open transportation? I’ve heard this question a lot lately, so I would

like to clarify. Open transportation is offered every Monday from 9 a.m. to2:30 p.m. This service is available to every resident. There is a 10-mile travelingradius. All you have to do to use this service is schedule an appointment onMondays and we will take you there and pick you up when you are finished. Ourvan is wheelchair-friendly, for those who are unable to walk up the steps. Theseschedules do fill up quickly and are on a first-come, first-served basis. If you areinterested in taking advantage of transportation, please sign up with Monica.

warm glow of the fireplace, take alook at the scrapbook we have puttogether. You will find many specialmemories from 2015.

Director’s CornerPlease remember that even though

the weather is cold, it is still possibleto become dehydrated. Please keepup on your fluid intake and takeadvantage of the extra waterdelivered to your apartment.

Just a reminder that the residentmeeting is the first Monday of eachmonth. Family members are not onlywelcome, but encouraged to attend.

We would like to try again to starta dementia support group. ContactDee or Monica to let us know howoften you would be interested inattending, weekly/biweekly/monthly,and what topics you would likecovered.

Lesley

Lesley was bornon April 20 inCharlevoix MI. Shehas one youngerbrother. She movedto Ypsilanti when shewas four, and livedthere until she was13; then returned toNorthern Michigan.

Lesley attendedschool in Ellsworth.She has two growndaughters, one thatjust married; she’shoping forgrandchildren soon.She’s not a fan ofwinter and beingcold, but she doeslove her cats. Sheenjoys camping,crafts, scrapbooking,painting, going tobeach, just going outfor a walk. Shecollects teacups andsaucers, and enjoyslooking for antiques.And, of course,spending time withher daughters. Lesleyloves her job, shesaid. “The best partof it is seeing theresidents every day.”

• It takes about 400 cacao beansto create 1 pound of chocolate.

• Chocolate is a great source ofantioxidants, which have beenshown to reduce a person’s riskof developing cancer and heartdisease.

• Snickers is the No. 1 sellingchocolate bar in the world.

• Eating dark chocolate inmoderation can lower a person’scholesterol levels.

• Americans prefer milk chocolateover dark chocolate; however,the consumption of darkchocolate is increasing. Try toeat dark chocolate containing atleast 40 percent cacao (will bestated on the chocolate candywrapper) for the most healthbenefits.

• The first United States chocolatefactory was built in 1765.

beginnings and it’s never too late toget in shape.

There are several different exerciseprograms for you to take advantageof:

Monday—Chair Yoga by Cortneyfrom Yoga Radiance.

Yoga is a great way to reducestress while strengthening your body.Yoga is a great way to tighten up yourcore muscles, improve circulationand balance.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday &Friday—Chair Exercise with StrengthTraining.

This is a group activity withindividual participation, which meanssome can do the whole routine andsome cannot. You just have to showup and do what works for you.

There’s also Beach Ball; onSaturdays, this exercise focusesentirely on leg strengthening. All youhave to do is show up, kick the ballsaround and listen to some great’50s music.

All exercise programs startat 10:30.
